Abstract:In this paper, a numerical simulation study on long distance transport of volcano ash from Pinatubo volcano with Hysplit-4 model of Air Resource Laboratory, NOAA,USA, has been introduced. Two conclusion are : 1) 84 case simulations with Hysplit-4 model, according to the historical meteorological fields from 1983 to 2003, show us that there are four routines for the volcano ash cloud move from Phillipine. The most dangerous routine is the northward routine. 2) The worst case is the case if the Pinatubo volcano erupts in July, 1998, The volcano ash cloud can land on the above atmosphere over the area of south China in 48 hours. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Abstract. The dispersion of volcanic emissions in the Earth atmosphere is of interest for climate research, air traffic control and human wellbeing. Current volcanic emission dispersion models rely on fixed-grid structures that often are not able to resolve the fine filamented structure of volcanic emissions being transported in the atmosphere. Here we extend an existing adaptive semi-Lagrangian advection model for volcanic emissions including the sedimentation of volcanic ash. The advection of volcanic emissions is driven by a precalculated wind field. For evaluation of the model, the explosive eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991 is chosen, which was one of the largest eruptions in the 20th century. We compare our simulations of the climactic eruption on 15 June 1991 to satellite data of the Pinatubo ash cloud and evaluate different sets of input parameters. We could reproduce the general advection of the Pinatubo ash cloud and, owing to the adaptive mesh, simulations could be performed at a high local resolution while minimizing computational cost. Differences to the observed ash cloud are attributed to uncertainties in the input parameters and the course of Typhoon Yunya, which is probably not completely resolved in the wind data used to drive the model. The best results were achieved for simulations with multiple ash particle sizes.

Abstract:Through the mathematic model of planar 2D tide and suspended sediment diffusion and movement,the process of suspended sediment diffusion and movement in some excavation project is simulated.Finite-element method with non-structural mesh is applied for discrete solution.By combining with actual project,the continuous line source is adopted in the model to simulate the increment suspended sediment during excavation.The mechanism of suspended sediment diffusion and movement is summarized,which will provide scientific evidence for the environmental effect evaluation.

However, when a sudden-happening disaster, such as the Chernobyl disaster, had occurred, all the existed dispersion models in the world didn't work well for it. Abstract:Landfills are the most popular means of disposing of construction solid waste owing to the low-cost, large treatment volume and strong adaptability. However, landfill collapses and landslides are common, posing a risk to lives and property. A catastrophic landslide, not triggered by heavy rainfall or earthquakes, occurred on December 20, 2015, at Hongao landfill in Guangming New district of Shenzhen, China. The collapsed waste soil flowed 1100 m down a slope with an elevation difference of 100 m. This catastrophic landslide is typical of long-runout disasters with high mobility, which result in great loss to life and property. In this paper, we focused on reproducing the flow processes and simulating the arriving area of the landslide at Hongao landfill using a full three-dimensional (3D) smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. A series of undrained ring shear tests were conducted to determine the viscosity coefficient for the numerical simulation. The calculated geometry of the landslide using the full 3D SPH method agreed well with the field data. Hence, the combination of ring shear tests and SPH method can be widely used to predict the dynamic behavior of potential landslides in landfills, to reduce or prevent similar disasters.

Abstract:Severe gas leakage accidents in recent years have shown that poor understanding and estimates of the poisonous gas movement could lead to dangerous evacuation delays. Therefore, this study analyzed the mechanisms for poisonous gas transportation across complex terrain. Traditional empiried models are not valid where the terrain is not smooth and especially in low-lying areas where the gas accumulates, which often occurs in complex terrain with dense gas leaks. Therefore, a computational fluid dynamics method was used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations to model the movement of the poisonous gas species. The natural gas leak in Kaixian city was taken as an example with simulations of spreading of the gas in the mountainous area. The results agree well with qualitative observations and quantitative data from the field.

Abstract:The model HYSPLIT-4 is used to simulate the long distance transportation of a dust storm occurring on 9 April,2003 in Northwest China.The track and concentration of this event are analyzed.Results show that:(1) The original airborne dust,which is responsible for the dust storm event on 9 April,2003,came from more than one desert area.(2)In the process of the long distance of this dust storm event,there are two high concentration centers transporting eastward.One is located in the latitude 35 degrees north,which transfers at an altitude between 1 500 and 3 000 meters which the other is located in the latitude 40 degrees north which transports below 1 500 meter.At last they merged.
Numerical Study of Landslide Impact on Submarine Pipelines

Abstract:Offshore pipelines are frequently subjected to the impact of submarine landslides or debris flow, causing large displacement and increase in internal forces. The damage of pipeline has been vastly reported and the pipeline behavior subjected to landslide has also been explored by many researchers. The impact of landslide on pipeline is commonly assumed to be static problem. However, the displacing process of the pipeline under the active landside loading is a kinematic procedure. This work attempts to explore the kinematic process of pipeline based on the vector form intrinsic finite element method. It is found that when the displacement is firstly triggered, it increases very quickly. With the increase of lateral soil resistance and the development of internal forces, the displacement gradually decreases and stabilizes. The comparison with the analytical model reveals obvious difference in tension distribution along the pipeline. Moreover, detailed analysis on the influence of landslide impaction location and the initial pipeline shape is included in the parametric analysis.
Numerical Simulation of Na-Tech Cascading Disasters in a Large Oil Depot

Abstract:The mechanism of natural-hazard-triggered technological (Na-tech) cascading disasters is complex, and the extent to which their damage is aggravated by various secondary events is difficult to quantify. This study selected a large oil depot and constructed a full-scale three-dimensional scene model based on the surrounding geographical environment. The discrete element method (DEM), finite element method (FEM) and finite volume method (FVM) were employed to conduct numerical simulations of the process and consequences of the following Na-tech disasters: heavy-rainfall-induced landslide → blocks impacting an oil transportation pipeline and breaking it → oil leaking, spreading and resulting in a vapor cloud explosion. According to the results, the maximum impact of the 1 m3 of sliding mass formed in the landslide on the pipeline was over 7 MN (meganewton), and the pipeline fractured completely when it was loaded with a contact force of only 1.44 MN. The numerical simulation methods revealed the mechanism of Na-tech cascading disasters in a large oil depot and quantified the consequences of each event in the cascading disasters.
The Non-uniform Continuity Problem on the Numerical Simulation of a Dust-storm Case over East Asia

Abstract:The numerical simulation on the long distance process of a dust-storm event based on conputer science need us to couple a long distance transporting model with a meteorological model. Here we show a numerical simulation study for a dust-storm event in 2003. In this study, a long distance transporting model, called Hysplit-4 model by NOAA,USA, has been coupled with a meteorological model,called MM5v3 by NCAR,USA.The simulation results show us that the simulated concentration fields in 24h can be regard as an acceptable numerical simulation result, however, with the integration time increasing up to 48hours, the numerical simulation results can not be acceptable as a good simulated result. After checking the vertical structure of the simulated concentration field, we found that the discontinuity of the concentration field in space may be responsible for this bad performance of numerical simulation results. Some discussions about solving this problem are also explained at the end of this paper.

Abstract:Volcanic debris flows (lahars) are highly destructive volcanic phenomena and present significant challenges in numerical simulation. This manuscript tackles the three fundamental requirements for modelling gravitational flows: determining plausible source configurations; selecting suitable topographic data; and employing appropriate mathematical models to assess the current hazard posed by long-distance lahars at Cotopaxi volcano. After incorporating these elements, we successfully simulated the characteristics of a future 1877-type lahar under current conditions, accounting for glacier size and topography. For the source conditions, or "scenario", we identified 27 equidistant source locations along the lower edge of the current glacier's extent. Each source was assigned a hydrograph based on the weighted volume of water available on Cotopaxi's current glacier. Additionally, we introduced a methodology for quantifying channel width when high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) are available. This method enabled us to determine the minimum pixel size required for accurate representation of ravine shapes. While higher resolution DEMs demand robust computational resources and extended computational timeframes, we upscaled Cotopaxi's DEM from 3 m to 15 m to balance accuracy and efficiency, as a 15-m DEM capture over 90% of the topography and reduces computing time significantly. Optimizing DEM selection is crucial, especially when contemplating future ensemble approaches. After employing the dynamic-based model Kestrel, parameterised for large lahars, we obtained predictions closely aligned with field observations, historical flow conditions inferred for the 1877 lahar-event, and results from previous simulation studies. Notably, we observed higher depths and speeds in canyons compared to plains, consistent with historical reports and previous studies. Minor discrepancies in the inundation area, when compared with existing hazard maps, emphasize the importance of understanding flow dynamics and lahar trajectories for effective hazard assessment and mitigation strategies. Furthermore, our results contribute valuable information to current hazard maps and can aid in damage quantification and cost/benefit analyses, particularly when planning the construction of mitigation infrastructure.

Abstract:High-speed remote landslide has become a hotspot in geological disasters due to the strong disaster. During the process of large-scale landslide, the heat generated by friction of the sliding zone increases the temperature of the local area, which changes the mechanical properties of the rock and soil. In order to explore the heat generated and accumulated in the sliding zone quantitatively, this paper developes a slope model of 230, 000 particles by using the MatDEM discrete element software. It simulates the sliding process of landslide. The results show that MatDEM simulates the typical characteristics of landslide accurately and shows the law of heat in discrete element model. The simulation results show that the kerosene high heat zone is formed near the sliding zone. With the highest heat at 3×105J in sliding zone cause the temperature increase 545.5℃ with heat capacity of 550J/kg·℃ when the slope heights 100 m. The high speed is caused by high temperature in the slidezone. High-calorie belt attaching to the sliding zone occur displacement accompanying the thickest sliding body. Morever, it is proved that the MatDEM can use unit connection state and the thermal field demonstrate the development law of cracks directly in the sliding body and sliding bed, which provides a new numerical calculation in landslides.
Numerical study of poisonous gas leakage process

Abstract:During the poisonous gas leakage accident, dispersed gases would spread quickly by fluid convection and diffusion mechanisms. The uncontrolled poisonous gas would greatly menace the life of human beings and properties. In some recent gas leakage accidents, it was found that poor understanding and estimating of the poisonous gas movement and transportation lead to evacuation delay and blindness evacuation of people. Accordingly the investigation on the law of toxic gas movement and transportation was especially crucial. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics method based on solving of Navier-Stokes equations was used. Concern was given on the movement of poisonous gas species. The numerical method was first proved by comparison of numerical results and experimental results. The KaiXian natural gas dispersion incident was taken as an example and numerical simulation work was performed. Numerical results gave the detailed process of the gas spread in the mountain area and the laws of heavy gas transportation are discussed. Comparison of numerical results and the real data with some qualitative was given and the simulation is satisfactorily proved.

Abstract:Numerical simulation is an important tool in the investigation of high-speed long-runout landslides. Taking the Xinmocun landslide in Maoxian as an example, this paper proposes a 3-dimensional discrete element modeling and numerical simulation method of large-scale landslide. On the basis of the micro-macro conversion formulas and numerical tests of discrete element method, it is able to get a discrete element deposition model that has similar mechanical properties as the sandstone of the landslide. Combined with the digital elevation model data and strata information, a 3-dimensional discrete element shell model is built, which follows the actual strata condition and rock mechanical properties. The initiation, high-speed sliding and accumulation process of Xinmocun landslide is simulated. The simulation results and the actual landslide accumulation are very similar in pattern and distribution, and the characteristics of velocity variation and time scale of simulated landslide coincide with the theoretical values and the measured seismic signal, which validate the reliability of the numerical simulation results and the effectiveness of the method. Source code of the numerical simulation is shared online( http://matdem.com ), with which a three-dimensional model can be built quickly. This paper provides an alternative approach for the study of mechanism of high-speed long-runout landslide and the evaluation of corresponding disaster effects.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, a graphics processing unit-accelerated smoothed particle hydrodynamics solver is presented to simulate the three-dimensional explosions in soils and their damage to aluminium structures. To achieve this objective, a number of equations of state and constitutive models required to close the momentum transport equation are incorporated into the proposed smoothed particle hydrodynamics framework, including the Jones-Wilkins-Lee equation of state for explosive materials, the Grüneisen equation of state for metals, the elastic-perfectly plastic constitutive model for metals, and the elastoplastic and elasto-viscoplastic constitutive models for soils. The proposed smoothed particle hydrodynamics methodology was implemented using the Compute Unified Device Architecture programming interface on an NVIDIA graphics processing unit in order to improve the computational efficiency. The various components of the proposed methodology were validated using four test cases, namely, a C4 detonation and an aluminium bar expanded by denotation to validate the modelling of explosion, a cylindrical Taylor bar impact test case to validate the modelling of large deformation in metals, a sand collapse test for the modelling of soils. Following the validation, the proposed method was used to simulate the detonation of an explosive material (C4) in soil and the concomitant deformation of an aluminium plate resulting from this explosion. The predicted results of this simulation are shown to be in good conformance with available experimental data. Finally, it is shown that the proposed graphics processing unit-accelerated SPH solver is able to model interaction problems involving millions of particles in a reasonable time.</p>

Abstract:Changbaishan Volcano located about 1400 km west of Japan Trench is an intra continental volcano which having different origin from island arc volcanoes. A number of different mechanisms have been proposed to interpret the origin of intraplate volcanoes, such as deep mantle plumes, back-arc extension and decompressional partial melting, asthenosphere upwelling and decompressional melting, and deep stagnant slab dehydration and partial melting. The recent geophysical research reveals that the slow seismic velocity anomaly extends continuously just below 660 km depth to surface beneath Changbaishan by seismic images and three-dimensional waveform modelling [Tang et al., 2014]. The subduction-induced upwelling occurs within a gap in the stagnant subducted Pacific Plate and produces decompressional melting.

Abstract:The detonation of a column charge and the damage process in a rock mass are simulated in this study by the particle flow code method. The expansion loading method and the dynamic boundary treatment method are established according to the discrete element mechanism. Mechanical parameters are calibrated on the basis of the Starfield superposition principle and the dynamic compensation method. Dynamic stiffness and microscopic parameters are used for numerical simulations. Numerical test results are consistent with lab experimental test results. The velocity attenuation law is compared with that of theoretical results, and the blasting crater action index is compared with that of field test results, to verify the rationality of the numerical explosion model of the column charge. The mechanism of the rock breaking process under column charge explosion is analyzed. Stress wave propagation, detonation wave propagation, and crack extension are investigated. The stress wave gradient law is obtained, and the effects of blasting rock breaking, crack extension, and explosion effect outside the blasting crater area are determined with different initiation modes. The research method can explain the blasting stress wave propagation law and describe the dynamical failure process in rock masses. This study can provide a reliable numerical analysis method for follow-up blasting research and offer practical guidance on engineering blasting.
