Abstract:In this paper a state-of-the-art version of the nucleon-pair approximation to the nuclear shell model is suggested. The configuration space is constructed by stepwise coupling collective nucleon pairs with given spin. The one-body and two-body matrix elements, as well as the overlaps, are calculated in terms of the $M$-scheme nucleon-basis states, without resorting to any angular momentum couplings. Many redundant commutations are avoided by using the Wigner-Eckart theorem and an algorithm similar to the coefficients of fractional parentage in the nuclear shell model calculations. Numerical experiments demonstrate the overwhelming computational superiority in comparison to all previous approaches of nucleon-pair shell model, particularly for the shell model Hamiltonian in the form of effective interactions. In addition, we exemplify this state-of-the-art version of the nucleon-pair approximation by even-even rare-earth $^{142--152}\mathrm{Nd}$ isotopes, for which the model space is constructed by using $SDGI$ nucleon pairs, and the Hamiltonian is adopted as ${V}_{\mathrm{low}\text{\ensuremath{-}}k}$ potential. Our calculation of the nucleon-pair approximation is able to reproduce reasonably the low-lying energy states of those Nd isotopes, where the seniority-type, vibrational, transitional, and rotational modes are described on the same footing, without adjusting any parameter.

Abstract:The formalism of the nucleon-pair approximation with conserved isospin is developed. In this version of the pair-truncated shell model, the building blocks of the configuration space are collective nucleon pairs with conserved spin and isospin. Analytic expressions are obtained for the matrix elements of one-and two-body interactions in the nucleon-pair basis as well as the overlaps between states. Abstract:By comparing the values of some quantities obtained in the SD pair truncated shell model and the dynamical symmetries of the interacting boson model(IBM), we identify the nuclear shape phases in the shell model. We study the dependence of the nuclear shape phases on the monopole-pair, quadrupole-pair and quadrupole-quadrupole interaction strength, respectively, in the shell model. We also investigate the vibrational to gamma-soft rotational phase transition in the shell model. The obtained results coincide with those obtained in the IBM very well.

Abstract:The validity of the SD-pair truncation of the shell model is tested in a single j shell and in many j shells within the framework of the nucleon pair shell model. It is found that the SD-pair truncation is a good approximation of the shell model in the single-j case when the Hamiltonian consists of (monopole and quadrupole) pairing plus quadrupole-quadrupole-type interaction. The SD-pair truncation deteriorates if the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction is artificially large compared with the monopole pairing interaction. For multi-j shells, schematic calculations in the degenerate sd, pf, and sdg shells are performed for the extreme case of a pure quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. There is a large difference between the binding energies in the SD-pair-truncated subspace and those calculated in the full shell model space as in the case of a single-j shell. However, it is found that the basic properties of the band structure remain intact, and that the difference in energy levels, i.e., moments of inertia, can be easily absorbed by adjusting interaction strengths without changing the transition rates.

Abstract:The microscopic structure of neutron-rich sd-shell nuclei is investigated by using the spherical-shell model in the sd-pf valence space with the extended pairing plus quadrupole-quadrupole forces accompanied by the monopole interaction (EPQQM). The calculation reproduces systematically the known energy levels for even-even and odd-mass nuclei including the recent data for S-43, S-46, and Ar-47. In particular, the erosion of the N = 28 shell closure in Si-42 can be explained. Our EPQQM results are compared with other shell-model calculations with the SDPF-NR and SDPF-U effective interactions.

Abstract:U(5)-O(6) transitional behaviour in the SD-pair shell model is studied. The results show that the U(5)-O(6) transitional patterns of the interacting boson model can be reproduced in the SD-pair shell model approximately.

Abstract:The nucleon-nucleon pairing forces were studied under the relativistic mean-field theory with the paring corrections by BCS approximation.The coupled equations of motion were solved by self-consistency with the interaction parameter set NL3.The gap parameters were fixed by reproducing ground state properties of 11950Sn,14058Ce,and 17871Lu.The properties of two medium isotope chains Ca and K and three heavy isotope chains Ce,Pr and Nd were investigated.The results indicated that the strength of the pairing forces Gn and Gp have a strong shell effects for the medium(N=20 and 28) and heavy nuclei(N=82) near the β stability line,thus a new method to search new magic numbers was provided.

Abstract:We present a brief introduction of the nucleon pair approximation (NPA) of the shell model in this paper. We review our recent calculated results which include level spectra and electromagnetic properties of low-lying states, by applying the NPA to even-even nuclei and to odd-A nuclei. We also apply this method to a few schematic systems such as single-j shell, to investigate the validity of SD-pair truncation of the shell model.

Abstract:Neutron-proton pairing correlations are investigated in detail via np transfer reactions in N=Zsd-shell nuclei. In particular, we study the cross-section ratio of the lowest 0+ and 1+ states as an observable to quantify the interplay between T=0 (isoscalar) and T=1 (isovector) pairing strengths. The experimental results are compared to second-order distorted-wave Born approximation calculations with proton-neutron amplitudes obtained in the shell-model formalism using the universal sd-shell interaction B. A Systematic Study on Nuclear Pairing Energy under the Relativistic Mean-Field Model

Abstract:Nuclear pairing energy of dozens of atomic nuclei in nuclear period chart are calculated along the stable line by extracting the swatch at a proton or neutron number interval of 4. Especially, we have studied the rule of pairing energy of the even-even nuclei of O isotopes changing with nucleon number under the relativistic mean-field model, and found, when energy gap Δ is fixed, the magnitude of nuclear pairing energy is related to nuclear shell structure. Thereof we propose a simple method to test closed shell, and further, we conclude that the neutron number N=6 is a new magic number not only in neutron-rich region, but also in proton-rich region of light nuclei.

By working in a shell-model framework we are able to assess the role of the various modes of proton-neutron pairing in the presence of nuclear deformation without violating symmetries. Results are presented for $^{44}$Ti, $^{45}$Ti, $^{46}$Ti, $^{46}$V and $^{48}$Cr to assess how proton-neutron pair correlations emerge under different scenarios. We also study how the presence of a one-body spin-obit interaction affects the contribution of the various pairing modes.

Abstract:Elliott's SU(3) model is at the basis of the shell-model description of rotational motion in atomic nuclei. We demonstrate that SU(3) symmetry can be realized in a truncated shell-model space if constructed in terms of a sufficient number of collective $S$, $D$, $G$, $\dots$ pairs (i.e., with angular momentum zero, two, four, $\dots$) and if the structure of the pairs is optimally determined either by a conjugate-gradient minimization method or from a Hartree-Fock intrinsic state. We illustrate the procedure for 6 protons and 6 neutrons in the $pf$ ($sdg$) shell and exactly reproduce the level energies and electric quadrupole properties of the ground-state rotational band with $SDG$ ($SDGI$) pairs. The $SD$-pair approximation without significant renormalization, on the other hand, cannot describe the full SU(3) collectivity. A mapping from Elliott's fermionic SU(3) model to systems with $s$, $d$, $g$, $\dots$ bosons provides insight into the existence of a decoupled collective subspace in terms of $S$, $D$, $G$, $\dots$ pairs.

Abstract:An earlier work dealing with low-lying collective states in nuclei is revised and improved. Correlated and independent nucleon S and D pairs properly modified so that they behave approximately like bosoms are constructed in terms of which a model space for low-lying collective states is defined, and a microscopic basis for IBM is thus set up. AII dynamical variables can also be "bosonized", i.e., expressed in terms of these "bosons" but with state-dependent coefficients or operators;to incorporate their state dependence in model space.

Abstract:Background: Establishing computationally tractable models of atomic nuclei is a long-time goal of nuclear structure physics. A flexible framework which easily includes excited states and many-body correlations is the configuration-interaction shell model (SM), but the exponential growth of the basis means one needs an efficient truncation scheme, ideally one that includes both deformation and pairing correlations. Purpose: We propose an efficient truncation scheme of the SM: starting from a pair condensate variationally defined by Hartree-Fock single-particle states and the particle-number conserved Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (NBCS) approximation, we carry out projection of states with good angular momentum. Methods: After generating Hartree-Fock single-particle states with Kramers degeneracy in a SM space, we optimize the pair amplitudes in the NBCS by minimizing the energy, and then use linear algebra projection (LAP) of states with good angular momentum. Both NBCS and LAP are computationally fast. Results: Our calculations yield good agreement with full configuration-interaction SM calculations for lowlying states of transitional and rotational nuclei with axially symmetric and triaxial deformation in medium- and heavy-mass regions: 44,46,48Ti, 48,50Cr, 52Fe, 60,62,64Zn, 66,68Ge, 68Se, and 108,110Xe. We predict low-lying states of 112-114Ba and 116-120Ce, nuclei difficult to reach by large-scale SM calculations. Conclusions: Both pair correlation and the configuration mixing between different intrinsic states play a key role in reproducing collectivity and shape coexistence, demonstrating the utility of this truncation scheme of the SM to study transitional and deformed nuclei.
Improved sd shell effective interactions from Daejeon16

Abstract:We present new microscopic effective shell-model interactions in the valence sd shell, obtained from the modern Daejeon16 nucleon-nucleon potential using no-core shell-model (NCSM) wave functions of 18F at Nmax=6 (total oscillator quanta of excitation) model space and the Okubo-Lee-Suzuki transformation. First, we explore the convergence properties of our calculations and show that the excitation energies of states in 18F, characterized by the largest valence-like configurations, are reasonably converged and the lowest states are in sensible agreement with experiment. Then, we investigate the monopole properties of that interaction in comparison with the phenomenological universal sd-shell interaction, USDB, and with the previously derived interaction at Nmax=4. Theoretical binding energies and low-energy spectra of the O isotopes, as well as low-energy spectra of a selection of $sd$-shell nuclei, are presented. We conclude that the use of larger-space NCSM wave functions leads to a noticeable improvement in the quality of the derived effective interaction. We propose monopole modifications of the Daejeon16 centroids which further improve the agreement with experiment throughout the sd shell, as demonstrated by a compilation of spectra contained in Supplemental Material.

Abstract:Atomic nuclei exhibit deformation, pairing correlations, and rotational symmetries. To meet these competing demands in a computationally tractable formalism, we revisit the use of general pair condensates with good particle number as a trial wave function for even-even nuclei. After minimizing the energy of the condensate, allowing for general triaxial deformations, we project out states with good angular momentum with a fast projection technique. To show applicability, we present example calculations from pair condensates in several model spaces and compare against angular-momentum projected Hartree-Fock and full configuration-interaction shell-model calculations. This approach successfully generates spherical, vibrational, and rotational spectra, demonstrating potential for modeling medium- to heavy-mass nuclei.
