Abstract:In this paper we discuss the nucleon pair approximation of the shell model, based on our recent results which include a brief introduction to its framework and validity. We exemplify this model by studies of low-lying states for odd-odd nuclei in the mass number A ∼ 210 region.

Abstract:We present a brief introduction of the nucleon pair approximation (NPA) of the shell model in this paper. We review our recent calculated results which include level spectra and electromagnetic properties of low-lying states, by applying the NPA to even-even nuclei and to odd-A nuclei. Abstract:In this paper a state-of-the-art version of the nucleon-pair approximation to the nuclear shell model is suggested. The configuration space is constructed by stepwise coupling collective nucleon pairs with given spin. The one-body and two-body matrix elements, as well as the overlaps, are calculated in terms of the $M$-scheme nucleon-basis states, without resorting to any angular momentum couplings. Many redundant commutations are avoided by using the Wigner-Eckart theorem and an algorithm similar to the coefficients of fractional parentage in the nuclear shell model calculations. Numerical experiments demonstrate the overwhelming computational superiority in comparison to all previous approaches of nucleon-pair shell model, particularly for the shell model Hamiltonian in the form of effective interactions. In addition, we exemplify this state-of-the-art version of the nucleon-pair approximation by even-even rare-earth $^{142--152}\mathrm{Nd}$ isotopes, for which the model space is constructed by using $SDGI$ nucleon pairs, and the Hamiltonian is adopted as ${V}_{\mathrm{low}\text{\ensuremath{-}}k}$ potential. Our calculation of the nucleon-pair approximation is able to reproduce reasonably the low-lying energy states of those Nd isotopes, where the seniority-type, vibrational, transitional, and rotational modes are described on the same footing, without adjusting any parameter.

Abstract:The formalism of the nucleon-pair approximation with conserved isospin is developed. In this version of the pair-truncated shell model, the building blocks of the configuration space are collective nucleon pairs with conserved spin and isospin. Analytic expressions are obtained for the matrix elements of one-and two-body interactions in the nucleon-pair basis as well as the overlaps between states. Abstract:We study the validity of pair approximations of the nuclear shell model (SM) for a few realistic nuclei (Te130-131 and I-132 here) in open shells (i.e., nuclei with both valence protons and valence neutrons). We take a phenomenological shell model Hamiltonian, which includes the single-particle energy term, monopole and quadrupole pairing interactions for like particles, and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions between all valence nucleons. We make comparisons of energy levels and B(E2) values calculated by pair approximations with those in the SM calculations. The overlaps between wave functions of the nucleon pair approximation (NPA) and those of the SM are presented explicitly for the low-lying states. Our calculated results demonstrate that the NPA is a remarkable approximation of the SM for these nuclei. The important role played by pairs with negative parity in some low-lying states is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the formalism for the nucleon-pair approximation (NPA) with particle-hole excitations is developed. By using this approach, one is able to perform multiple-major-shell calculations. In this formulation, we use a particle-hole mixed representation, i.e., the particle-hole conjugate transformation is used for operators of the lower major shells, while operators of the upper major shells remain unchanged. We consider collective valence-particle pairs in the upper major shells, collective valence-hole pairs in the lower major shells, and collective pairs consisting of one valence particle in the upper shells and one valence hole in the lower shells to construct our model space. Matrix elements for the shell-model Hamiltonian, both for effective interactions and for phenomenological pairing plus multipole-multipole interactions, are derived in the nucleon-pair basis. As a special case, analytical formulas for doubly magic nuclei with excitations up to two-particle-two-hole are presented. To exemplify this approach, we calculate Sn-100 considering both proton and neutron up to four-particle-four-hole excitations, where valence particles are in the 50-82 major shell and valence holes in the 28-50 major shell, with the low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction derived from the CD-Bonn potential.

Abstract:The nucleon-pair shell model (NPSM) within the framework of a broken symmetry basis is studied. The results demonstrate the validity of such a scheme, which in turn leads to a significant reduction in the dimensionality of the multi-pair configuration space. Specifically, in the case of an axially-deformed basis, the results yield a satisfactory description of the low-lying spectrum, even without the need for applying the projection procedure. In the case of a triaxially-deformed basis, the result of variation after angular momentum projection suggest a potential for using the NPSM to find exact solutions in a semi-magic system.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an approach to nucleon-pair approximation（NPA） with m-scheme bases, in which the collective nucleon pairs are represented in terms of antisymmetric matrices, and commutations between nucleon pairs are given using a matrix multiplication that avoids angular-momentum couplings and recouplings.Therefore the present approach significantly simplifies the NPA computation. Furthermore, it is formulated on the same footing with and without isospin.

Abstract:In this article we perform systematic calculations on low-lying states of 33 nuclei with A=202-212, using the nucleon pair approximation of the shell model. We use a phenomenological shell-model Hamiltonian that includes single-particle energies, monopole and quadrupole pairing interactions, and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions. The building blocks of our model space include one J=4 valence neutron pair, and one J=4,6,8 valence proton pair, in addition to the usual S and D pairs. We calculate binding energies, excitation energies, electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments of low-lying states, and E2 transition rates between low-lying states. Our calculated results are reasonably consistent with available experimental data. The calculated quadrupole moments and magnetic moments, many of which have not yet been measured for these nuclei, are useful for future experimental measurements.

Abstract:In this paper we study the nucleon-pair approximation for T = 0 states of Cd-96 in the 1p(1/2)1p(3/2)0(f5/2)0g(9/2) shell with the JUN45 interaction. The lowest seniority scheme and the isoscalar spin-one pair approximation are not enough to describe the states. The isoscalar spin-aligned pair approximation is reasonably good for the yrast 2(+), 4(+), 6(+), 12(+), 14(+), and 16(+) states as pointed out previously. Not only the yrast positive-parity states but also nonyrast states and negative-parity states are well described by both the isovector pair approximation and the isoscalar pair approximation. We calculate overlaps between nucleon-pair basis states and shell-model wave functions. The largest overlaps and the corresponding nucleon-pair basis states are presented. We find that isovector spin-zero pairs, isovector spin-two pairs, and isoscalar spin-aligned pairs are the dominant building blocks in these states.
Nucleon-pair Approximations for Low-Lying States of Even-Evenn=znuclei

Abstract:In this paper we study nucleon-pair correlations of low-lying states for two typical cases of even-even N = Z nuclei. The first case is a single g(9/2) shell with eight valence nucleons. In this case we study S-pair, isoscalar spin-aligned-pair, isoscalar spin-one-pair approximations, with both schematic and realistic interactions. We find that electric quadrupole transition rates and electric quadrupole moments exhibit different patterns depending on the pair-truncated scheme. In the second case we study ground states of Ne-20, Mg-24, S-32, Ar-36, Ti-44, Cr-48, Zn-60, Ge-64, Pd-92, and Cd-96. For ground states of these nuclei, the S-pair approximation is reasonably good (though not as good as for semimagic nuclei); the isoscalar spin-one-pair approximation is not very good. The isoscalar spin-aligned pair approximation is good for ground states of Ti-44 and Cd-96, and not very good for Cr-48 and Pd-92. The effect of the spin-orbit coupling strength on pairing correlations is studied. Our calculations suggests that the spin-orbit coupling favors the S-pair correlation in ground states of N = Z nuclei.

Abstract:In this paper we study the spin-J nucleon-pair approximation for a single-j shell, with a simple J-pairing interaction. For a four-nucleon system, the J-pair truncation works remarkably well, in particular for isospin T = 0 states. The lowest I = 0 states of four nucleons are exactly described by the J-pair approximation. If both J = 0 and J = 2j pairing interactions are considered, the J = 2j pair truncation works very well in one of the two lowest I = 2j - 1 states. For six nucleons, J-pair approximations are very good for J similar to 2j, and the seniority scheme provides us with exact solutions to the J = 0 pairing interaction.

Abstract:Nuclear pairing energy of dozens of atomic nuclei in nuclear period chart are calculated along the stable line by extracting the swatch at a proton or neutron number interval of 4. Especially, we have studied the rule of pairing energy of the even-even nuclei of O isotopes changing with nucleon number under the relativistic mean-field model, and found, when energy gap Δ is fixed, the magnitude of nuclear pairing energy is related to nuclear shell structure. Thereof we propose a simple method to test closed shell, and further, we conclude that the neutron number N=6 is a new magic number not only in neutron-rich region, but also in proton-rich region of light nuclei.

Abstract:A nucleon-pair shell model was proposed in 1993 by J. Q. Chen. Due to the success of the interacting boson model, the full shell model space in the nucleon-pair shell model was truncated to SD-pair subspace, called SD-pair shell model. Within this model, the experimental spectra in medium-weight and heavy nuclei, limiting cases in the interacting boson model, phase transitions, etc. can be reproduced approximately.

Abstract:The low-lying states of 200–205Hg nuclei have been studied by using the nucleon pair approximation (NPA) of the shell model. We calculate low-excited energy levels, electric quadrupole moments, and magnetic dipole moments, and investigate dominant configurations of low-lying states in the nucleon pair basis. Our calculations reasonably reproduce the available experimental data. We also tabulate our predicted results of low-lying states, including excitation energies, electric quadrupole moments and magnetic moments.

Abstract:In this work we study approximate and exact solutions for nucleons in a single-j shell, from the perspective of nucleon-pair basis states, i.e., those coupled by pairs with good spins. We find that for four, five, and six particles in the 0h(11/2) shell, a selected set of independent nucleon-pair basis states leads to approximate solutions of a realistic two-body interaction, without resorting to the diagonalization. We analytically show that for six particles in the j = 11/2 shell, two nucleon-pair states with J = 3 and 11-which are coupled by three pairs of spin 0, 2, and 4 and by pairs of spin 0, 2, and 10, respectively-are eigenstates of any two-body interactions. In particular, we construct general analytic expressions for states of definite seniority numbers v = 3, 4, 5 in terms of nucleon-pair basis states, based on which we further derive exact wave functions for a few eigenstates of any two-body interactions in the midshells of j = 7/2, 9/2, 11/2. The exact wave functions given here should be useful in interpreting electromagnetic moment and transition properties of corresponding nuclei.
Variational approach for pair optimization in the nucleon pair approximation

Abstract:We propose a pair-condensate variational approach (PCV) to determine a set of the most important collective pairs in the description of low-lying states in atomic nuclei. Having available the precise details on these key collective pairs -- their spin, parity, and structure -- can be particularly useful in calculations based on the nucleon-pair approximation (NPA), helping to reduce their uncertainties. In trial calculations for the transitional Ba isotopes, our variational approach describes the evolution of quadrupole-deformation properties similar to Hartree-Fock treatments, while at the same time highlighting the $\gamma$ softness of $^{132}$Ba. Our approach can conclusively determine which collective pairs are critical for obtaining the lowest possible yrast, quasi-beta, quasi-gamma bands, producing both the level structure of these bands and related B(E2) values in reasonable consistency with experiment. These trial calculations suggest that with our PCV approach the NPA can be meaningfully applied to transitional nuclei with a wide spectrum of shapes. We also show that while neutron negative-parity pairs could in principle have an important impact on backbending in $^{132}$Ba, they are not favored for this nucleus.
