Abstract:Full text: Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), a third-generation of synchrotron radiation light source, is under construction due for completion in April 2009 according to construction schedule. It consists of a 150 MeV Linac, a 3.5 GeV Booster synchrotron, and a 3.5 GeV Storage Ring. Its performance is optimised in a wide used X-ray energy region. Synchrotron radiation light with high brilliance and high intensity can be generated by using insertion devices. In total, more than 60 beamlines including 7 initial beamlines can be installed in the ring. There are potential radiation safety issues for the workers and the general public from the SSRF operation with regard to health and environment protection issues. Primary radiation protection programme was created with reference to national standards. Radiation safety system, consisting mainly of interlock subsystem, audio-visual warning system and a set of area radiation monitoring system has been designed to protect people from prompt radiation hazards from the SSRF operation. Both empirical formulae and Monte Carlo simulation codes were adopted for the shielding design calculations. Radiation levels resulted from unexpected accidental beam loss due to various reasons were also evaluated both for the workers and the general public based on the simulation. High-energy Bremsstrahlung x-rays through front ends of the beamlines, shield joints, and its associated photoneutrons were specially focused. The radiation levels were also investigated experimentally with conventional survey meters and personal dosimeters during the commissioning phase. With these considerations of radiation safety in the SSRF, the radiation levels could be much low than the current setting permissible limits in all accessible areas during normal operating condition and within the permissible limits in unusual case.
