Abstract:The importance of renewable resources and environmentally friendly materials has grown globally in recent time. Hemicellulose is renewable lignocellulosic materials that have been the subject of substantial valorisation research. Due to its distinctive benefits, including its wide availability, low cost, renewability, biodegradability, simplicity of chemical modification, etc., it has attracted increasing interest in a number of value-added fields. In this review, a systematic summarizes of the structure, extraction method, and characterization technique for hemicellulose-based materials was carried out. Also, their most current developments in a variety of value-added adsorbents, biomedical, energy-related, 3D-printed materials, sensors, food packaging applications were discussed. Additionally, the most recent challenges and prospects of hemicellulose-based materials are emphasized and examined in-depth. It is anticipated that in the near future, persistent scientific efforts will enable the renewable hemicellulose-based products to achieve practical applications.

The development of their application in the papermaking area will be reviewed and summarized.

Abstract:Exploration of lignocellulosic biomass provides a sustainable and eco-friendly route for producing liquid fuels, materials, and chemicals. However, direct utilization of lignocelluloses is limited by the stable and complicated cross-linking structure of the plant cell wall. Hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) is a green and cost-effective technology because it can disrupt lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) linkages, dissolve hemicelluloses and lignin, and redistribute lignin in the cell wall layers without utilization of any chemicals. Thus, HTP is expected to achieve industrial scale in second-generation biorefineries and circular bioeconomies. This review analyzed the deconstruction of lignocelluloses by HTP, with particular emphasis on the formation mechanism of hemicellulose degradation products and the structural evolution of hemicelluloses and lignin accompanying HTP. Meanwhile, the formation mechanism of pseudolignin and its effect on the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose as well as strategies for inhibiting lignin recondensation were discussed.

Abstract:Hemicelluloses are types of plant cell wall polysaccharides, and the world's second most abundant renewable polymers after cellulose in lignocellulosic materials. They represent a type of hetero-polysaccharide with complex structure containing glucose, xylose, mannose, galactose, arabinose, rhamnose, glucuronic acid, and galacturonic acid in various amounts, depending on the source. Hemicelluloses are usually bonded to other cell-wall components such as cellulose, cell-wall proteins, lignin, and phenolic compounds by covalent and hydrogen bonds, and by ionic and hydrophobic interactions. This paper provides a review on hemicelluloses from lignocellulosic materials, especially in regard to their isolation and purification methods, and bioconversion. Current isolation and purification strategies are summarized, including: alkali peroxide extraction, organic solvent extraction, steam explosion, ultrasound-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, column chromatography, and membrane separation. In addition, the bioconversion of hemicelluloses including pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation are discussed.
Hemicellulosic Derivatives With Cationic Groups As Wet End Additives In Papermaking

Abstract:In general, cationic polysaccharides can be prepared by the reaction of a polysaccharide with various reagents possessnig positively charged groups such as amino, imino, ammonium, sulfonium or phosphonium groups. In this context, our interest was focused on cationic polysaccharides containing cationic groups by reacting hemicelluloses with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (ETA). The synthesis of hemicellulosic derivatives using Sugarcane bagasse hemicelluloses as raw materials reacted with 2, 3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (ETA) using sodium hydroxide as a catalyst in aqueous solution were studied. The effects of reaction condition such as the way of the addition of sodium hydroxide, the molar ratio of ETA and hemicelluloses on the products of degree of substitution were investigated in detail. The new materials were characterized by FT-IR and (13)C NMR spectroscopy as well as GPC. Moreover, the application of hemicellulosic derivatives as wet end addtives in papermaking was studied. It was found that hemicellulosic derivatives obviously could improve the physical properties of hand sheet made from bleached conifer sulfate kraft pulp. When the dosage of cationic hemicellulosic derivative with DS value of 0.53 was 1.0% (weight based on dry pulp), breaking length, burst index and tear index increased by 4.2%, 9.4%, and 16.3%, respectively, compared of the control hand sheets.

Abstract:The increasing consumption of regenerated cellulose, in particular the viscose fiber, has led to a significant development of dissolving pulps in the last decade. In this review paper, the current status of dissolving pulp with respects to raw materials, manufacturing processes, and some key issues are discussed. Non-wood materials and the process concept of upgrading paper-grade pulp into dissolving pulp are also included. Some recent developments related to the analytical methods of the purity and molecular weight distribution based on the ion chromatography and gel permeation chromatography are discussed. Finally, further processing improvements of purification, such as mechanical, chemical, and enzymatic treatment, and their combinations during the manufacturing process of dissolving pulp, are included.

Abstract:Cellulose has been widely used in papermaking, textile, and chemical industries due to its diverse sources, environmental friendliness, and renewability. Recently, much more attention has been paid to converting cellulose into high-value-added products. Therefore, the extraction of nanocellulose, the dissolution of cellulose, and their applications are some of the most important research topics currently. However, cellulose's dense hydrogen bond network poses challenges for efficient extraction and dissolution, limiting its potential for functional material development. This review discusses the mechanisms of hydrogen bond disruption and weak interactions during nanocellulose extraction and cellulose dissolution. Key challenges and future research directions are highlighted, emphasizing developing efficient, ecofriendly, and cost-effective methods. Additionally, this review provides theoretical insights for constructing high-performance cellulose-based materials.

The annual number of research publications and patents on nanocellulose with respect to manufacturing, properties and applications is now up in the thousands, so it is of the utmost importance to review articles that endeavour to research on this explosive topic of cellulose nanomaterials. Abstract:Research on the utilization of biomass feedstocks has evolved rapidly in the past decades. Key developments include the production of materials with a more sustainable footprint than those derived from petrochemicals. Among associated materials, nanocelluloses have been produced from different sources and routes, such as high shear fibrillation and hydrolysis (chemical or enzymatic) or their combinations. The unique properties of nanocelluloses have sparked a myriad of uses including those related to the fields of oil and gas, adhesion, film formation, coating, packaging, food and composite processing. High end uses include the development of advanced lightweight materials, biosensors and energy harvesting systems; however, central to this review are uses closer to the source itself, namely fiber processing and, in particular, papermaking. In this chapter, the literature in these latter applications is discussed with emphasis on the use of nanocellulose to achieve favorable strength and barrier properties as well as in coating and paper sheet-forming.

Abstract:As one of the most abundant natural polymers in nature, polysaccharides have the potential to replace petroleum-based polymers that are difficult to degrade in paper coatings. Polysaccharide molecules have a large number of hydroxyl groups that can bind strongly with paper fibers through hydrogen bonds. Chemical modification can also effectively improve the mechanical, barrier, and hydrophobic properties of polysaccharide-based coating layers and thus can further improve the related properties of coated paper. Polysaccharides can also give paper additional functional properties by dispersing and adhering functional fillers, e.g., conductive particles, catalytic particles or antimicrobial chemicals, onto paper surface. Based on these, this paper reviews the application of natural polysaccharides, such as cellulose, hemicellulose, starch, chitosan, and sodium alginate, and their derivatives in paper coatings. This paper analyzes the improvements and influences of chemical structures and properties of polysaccharides on the mechanical, barrier, and hydrophobic properties of coated paper. This paper also summarizes the researches where polysaccharides are used as the adhesives to adhere inorganic or functional fillers onto paper surface to endow paper with great surface properties or special functions such as conductivity, catalytic, antibiotic, and fluorescence.

Abstract:Nanocellulose has a wide range of applications in the field of functional materials, and it has piqued the interest of researchers for some time. This is because nanocellulose inherits the advantages of environmental friendliness and easy availability of plant cell walls in nature, as well as the unique morphology of nanostructures. This review presents four types of nanocellulose including cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), regenerated nanocellulose (RNC) and bacterial cellulose (BC), introduces the different preparation routes and their mechanisms, analyzes the advantages and drawbacks between these approaches, and summarizes the potential applications in the field of functional materials such as reinforced composite materials, biomedical materials, soft templates, and optical materials. Finally, future development directions are proposed including further enrichment of nanocellulose raw materials, improvement of preparation methods to adapt to more diversified raw materials, and classification of products according to their morphology and properties to improve the use efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract Cellulose is the most abundant polysaccharide on Earth. It can be obtained from a vast number of sources, e.g. cell walls of wood and plants, some species of bacteria, and algae, as well as tunicates, which are the only known cellulose-containing animals. This inherent abundance naturally paves the way for discovering new applications for this versatile material. This review provides an extensive survey on cellulose and its derivatives, their structural and biochemical properties, with an overview of applications in tissue engineering, wound dressing, and drug delivery systems. Based on the available means of selecting the physical features, dimensions, and shapes, cellulose exists in the morphological forms of fiber, microfibril/nanofibril, and micro/nanocrystalline cellulose. These different cellulosic particle types arise due to the inherent diversity among the source of organic materials or due to the specific conditions of biosynthesis and processing that determine the consequent geometry and dimension of cellulosic particles. These different cellulosic particles, as building blocks, produce materials of different microstructures and properties, which are needed for numerous biomedical applications. Despite having great potential for applications in various fields, the extensive use of cellulose has been mainly limited to industrial use, with less early interest towards the biomedical field. Therefore, this review highlights recent developments in the preparation methods of cellulose and its derivatives that create novel properties benefiting appropriate biomedical applications.

Abstract:In a quest to find eco-friendly materials from renewable resources, researchers have focused on cellulose materials, which is the primary reinforcing component of plant cell walls. Nanocellulose is at the forefront of research due to its wide range of sources, biocompatibility, large surface area and tunable surface chemistry. It has gained considerable attention in various industries as a nano-reinforcement for polymer matrices due to its hierarchical structure (medical and healthcare, oil and gas, packaging, paper, board, composites, printed and flexible electronics, 3D printing, aerogels). In this paper, we have reviewed the recent advances in nanocellulose production, physical properties, structural characterization, surface modification strategies, pretreatment methods, applications, limitations and future directions. This review emphasizes the quantification of nanocellulose extraction and applications of the most prevalent areas of nanocellulose research. In view of its increasing and broader applications, the demand for nanocellulose is expected to increase in the future.

Abstract:Development of new sources and isolation processes has recently enhanced the production of cellulose in many different colloidal states. Even though cellulose is widely used as a functional ingredient in the food industry, the relationship between the colloidal states of cellulose and its applications is mostly unknown. This review covers the recent progress on illustrating various colloidal states of cellulose and the influencing factors with special emphasis on the correlation between the colloidal states of cellulose and its applications in food industry. The associated unique colloidal states of cellulose like high aspect ratio, crystalline structure, surface charge, and wettability not only promote the stability of colloidal systems, but also help improve the nutritional aspects of cellulose by facilitating its interactions with digestive system. Further studies are required for the rational control and improvement of the colloidal states of cellulose and producing food systems with enhanced functional and nutritional properties.
