Abstract:This review paper provides a recent overview of current international research that is being conducted into the functional properties of cellulose as a nanomaterial. A particular emphasis is placed on fundamental and applied research that is being undertaken to generate applications, which are now becoming a real prospect given the developments in the field over the last 20 years. A short introduction covers the context of the work, and definitions of the different forms of cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs) that are most widely studied. We also address the terminology used for CNMs, suggesting a standard way to classify these materials. The reviews are separated out into theme areas, namely healthcare, water purification, biocomposites, and energy. Each section contains a short review of the field within the theme and summarizes recent work being undertaken by the groups represented. Topics that are covered include cellulose nanocrystals for directed growth of tissues, bacterial cellulose in healthcare, nanocellulose for drug delivery, nanocellulose for water purification, nanocellulose for thermoplastic composites, nanocellulose for structurally colored materials, transparent wood biocomposites, supercapacitors and batteries.

Abstract:Amidst the progressive depletion of non-renewable resources on a global scale, the expedited development of green and sustainable materials has become an imperative. Cellulose, a recognized environmentally friendly substance, presents itself as a solution owing to its low cost, abundant availability, facile degradability, and renewability. Its potential to gradually supplant petroleum resources, thereby yielding a diverse array of high value-added materials, is well acknowledged. Herein, we present an exploration of the utilization of cellulose as a precursor, rooted in its fundamental properties. Moreover, we undertake a comprehensive review of the preparation techniques and structural property characteristics exhibited by mainstream cellulose-based functional materials. These materials notably include cellulose spheres, cellulose hydrogels, cellulose aerogels, cellulose films, and cellulose-derived carbon materials. Following this extensive review, our article accentuates the strides made in the field of cellulose-based functional materials across diverse pertinent domains. These encompass materials essential for adsorption and separation purposes, biomedical devices, electrode capacitive applications, and the emerging landscape of smart electronic devices. Concluding our discourse, we address the challenges that lie ahead and outline the potential future prospects for the development of cellulose-based functional materials.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofiber is originally prepared from natural cellulosic resources such as wood,bamboo, agricultural residuals,and several marine animals.As a promising candidate for functional materials,cellulose nanofiber behaves numerous merits including excellent mechanical properties,well optical transmission,natural interconnected network,and abundant chemical groups on fiber surface.In this work,the present status of cel-lulose nanofiber for the preparation of green energy storages (Li-ion battery and supercapacitors),flexible nano-devices,controlled optical transmission materials,functional templates,novel plant-based carbon nanofiber, medicine carrier and tissue cultivation was summarized.

Abstract:There is an emerging quest for lightweight materials with excellent mechanical properties and economic production, while still being sustainable and functionalizable. They could form the basis of the future bioeconomy for energy and material efficiency. Cellulose has long been recognized as an abundant polymer. Modified celluloses were, in fact, among the first polymers used in technical applications; however, they were later replaced by petroleum-based synthetic polymers. Currently, there is a resurgence of interest to utilize renewable resources, where cellulose is foreseen to make again a major impact, this time in the development of advanced materials. This is because of its availability and properties, as well as economic and sustainable production. Among cellulose-based structures, cellulose nanofibrils and nanocrystals display nanoscale lateral dimensions and lengths ranging from nanometers to micrometers. Their excellent mechanical properties are, in part, due to their crystalline assembly via hydrogen bonds. Owing to their abundant surface hydroxyl groups, they can be easily modified with nanoparticles, (bio)polymers, inorganics, or nanocarbons to form functional fibers, films, bulk matter, and porous aerogels and foams. Here, some of the recent progress in the development of advanced materials within this rapidly growing field is reviewed.

Abstract:Cellulose based materials are widely used in various fields such as papermaking, packaging, composite materials, textiles and clothing due to their diverse types, environmental friendliness, natural degradation, high specific strength, and low cost. The intelligence of cellulose based materials will further expand their application fields. This article first gives an in-depth analyzation on the intelligent structural design of these materials according to the two major categories of isotropic and anisotropic, then lists the main preparation methods of cellulose based intelligent materials. Subsequently, this article systematically summarizes the recent intelligent response methods and characteristics of cellulose based materials, and extensively elaborates on the intelligent application of these materials. Finally, the prospects for the intelligence of cellulose based materials are discussed.

Abstract:Lignocellulose has been extensively researched over the past decades in response to the growing global significance of renewable resources and environment-friendly materials. Hemicellulose is a large family of polysaccharides present in the primary and secondary cell walls of all land plants, fresh-water plants, and some seaweeds. It has gained significant attention in the development of hemicellulose-based functional polymeric materials owing to its distinct features such as environment-friendliness, renewability, and biodegradability. Recent studies have focused on the isolation, structural characterization, and chemical modification of hemicellulose and the preparation of hemicellulose-based materials. This review, comprehensively elaborates the preparation of hemicellulose-based functional polymeric materials via chemical modification, including the structures and properties of hemicellulose; design strategies for harnessing hemicellulose; and various forms of hemicellulose-based functional polymeric materials such as nanoparticles, films and coatings, hydrogels and aerogels, carbon quantum dots, porous carbons and catalysts. This review provides an update on hemicellulose-based functional materials, with a focus on their controlled-release, adsorption, biosensing, packaging, catalytic conversion, and electrode applications. Future perspectives on challenges and opportunities in the research field of hemicellulose are briefly highlighted.

Abstract:With the increment in global energy consumption and severe environmental pollution, it is urgently needed to explore green and sustainable materials. Inspired by nature, catechol groups in mussel adhesion proteins have been successively understood and utilized as novel biomimetic materials. In parallel, cellulose presents a wide class of functional materials rating from macro-scale to nano-scale components. The cross-over among both research fields alters the introduction of impressive materials with potential engineering properties, where catechol-containing materials supply a general stage for the functionalization of cellulose or cellulose derivatives. In this review, the role of catechol groups in the modification of cellulose and cellulose derivatives is discussed. A broad variety of advanced applications of cellulose-based catechol-containing materials, including adhesives, hydrogels, aerogels, membranes, textiles, pulp and papermaking, composites, are presented. Furthermore, some critical remaining challenges and opportunities are studied to mount the way toward the rational purpose and applications of cellulose-based catechol-containing materials.

Abstract:<p>Advanced templating techniques have enabled delicate control of both nano‐ and microscale structures and have helped thrust functional materials into the forefront of society. Cellulose nanomaterials are derived from natural polymers and show promise as a templating source for advanced materials. Use of cellulose nanomaterials in templating combines nanoscale property control with sustainability, an attribute often lacking in other templating techniques. Use of cellulose nanofibers for templating has shown great promise in recent years, but previous reviews on cellulose nanomaterial templating techniques have not provided extensive analysis of cellulose nanofiber templating. Cellulose nanofibers display several unique properties, including mechanical strength, porosity, high water retention, high surface functionality, and an entangled fibrous network, all of which can dictate distinctive aspects in the final templated materials. Many applications exploit the unique aspects of templating with cellulose nanofibers that help control the final properties of the material, including, but not limited to, applications in catalysis, batteries, supercapacitors, electrodes, building materials, biomaterials, and membranes. A detailed analysis on the use of cellulose nanofibers templating is provided, addressing specifically how careful selection of templating mechanisms and methodologies, combined toward goal applications, can be used to directly benefit chosen applications in advanced functional materials.</p>

Abstract:Cellulose is the most abundant biomass material in nature, and possesses some promising properties, such as mechanical robustness, hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Thus, cellulose has been widely applied in many fields. "Smart" materials based on cellulose have great advantages-especially their intelligent behaviors in reaction to environmental stimuli-and they can be applied to many circumstances, especially as biomaterials. This review aims to present the developments of "smart" materials based on cellulose in the last decade, including the preparations, properties, and applications of these materials. The preparations of "smart" materials based on cellulose by chemical modifications and physical incorporating/blending were reviewed. The responsiveness to pH, temperature, light, electricity, magnetic fields, and mechanical forces, etc. of these "smart" materials in their different forms such as copolymers, nanoparticles, gels, and membranes were also reviewed, and the applications as drug delivery systems, hydrogels, electronic active papers, sensors, shape memory materials and smart membranes, etc. were also described in this review.

Abstract:Nanocellulose has a wide range of applications in the field of functional materials, and it has piqued the interest of researchers for some time. This is because nanocellulose inherits the advantages of environmental friendliness and easy availability of plant cell walls in nature, as well as the unique morphology of nanostructures. This review presents four types of nanocellulose including cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), regenerated nanocellulose (RNC) and bacterial cellulose (BC), introduces the different preparation routes and their mechanisms, analyzes the advantages and drawbacks between these approaches, and summarizes the potential applications in the field of functional materials such as reinforced composite materials, biomedical materials, soft templates, and optical materials. Finally, future development directions are proposed including further enrichment of nanocellulose raw materials, improvement of preparation methods to adapt to more diversified raw materials, and classification of products according to their morphology and properties to improve the use efficiency.

Abstract:Nanocellulose has become a rising star in fabricating flexible materials owing to its unique structure and properties, and great progress is achieved. This review comprehensively summarizes the latest progress in the design, fabrication, and applications of nanocellulose‐based flexible materials, and the critical role of nanocellulose in constructing flexible materials is highlighted. With the increase of environmental pollution and depletion of fossil fuel resources, the utilization of renewable biomass resources for developing functional materials or fine chemicals is of great value and has attracted considerable attention. Nanocellulose, as a well‐known renewable nanomaterial, is regarded as a promising nano building block for advanced functional materials owing to its unique structure and properties, as well as natural abundance. Typically, its high mechanical strength, structural flexibility, reinforcing capabilities, and tunable self‐assembly behavior makes it highly attractive to fabricate flexible materials for various applications. Herein, the recent progress in the design, properties, and applications of advanced flexible materials from nanocellulose is comprehensively summarized. The preparation and properties of nanocellulose are first briefly introduced and discuss its merits in fabricating flexible materials. Then, various advanced flexible materials from nanocellulose are introduced, and the critical role of nanocellulose in constructing flexible materials is highlighted based on its intrinsic properties. After that, their applications in energy storage, electronics, sensor, biomedical, thermally insulating, photonic devices, etc., are presented. At last, the outlook of the current challenges and future perspectives for developing nanocellulose‐derived flexible materials are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Cellulose nanopaper has shown great potential in diverse fields including optoelectronic devices, food packaging, biomedical application, and so forth, owing to their various advantages such as good flexibility, tunable light transmittance, high thermal stability, low thermal expansion coefficient, and superior mechanical properties. Herein, recent progress on the fabrication and applications of cellulose nanopaper is summarized and discussed based on the analyses of the latest studies. We begin with a brief introduction of the three types of nanocellulose: cellulose nanocrystals, cellulose nanofibrils and bacterial cellulose, recapitulating their differences in preparation and properties. Then, the main preparation methods of cellulose nanopaper including filtration method and casting method as well as the newly developed technology are systematically elaborated and compared. Furthermore, the advanced applications of cellulose nanopaper including energy storage, electronic devices, water treatment, and high-performance packaging materials were highlighted. Finally, the prospects and ongoing challenges of cellulose nanopaper were summarized.

Abstract:The escalating need for a sustainable future has driven the advancement of renewable functional materials. Nanocellulose, derived from the abundant natural biopolymer cellulose, demonstrates noteworthy characteristics, including high surface area, crystallinity, mechanical strength, and modifiable chemistry. When combined with two-dimensional (2D) graphitic materials, nanocellulose can generate sophisticated hybrid materials with diverse applications as building blocks, carriers, scaffolds, and reinforcing constituents. Abstract:The importance of renewable resources and environmentally friendly materials has grown globally in recent time. Hemicellulose is renewable lignocellulosic materials that have been the subject of substantial valorisation research. Due to its distinctive benefits, including its wide availability, low cost, renewability, biodegradability, simplicity of chemical modification, etc., it has attracted increasing interest in a number of value-added fields. In this review, a systematic summarizes of the structure, extraction method, and characterization technique for hemicellulose-based materials was carried out. Also, their most current developments in a variety of value-added adsorbents, biomedical, energy-related, 3D-printed materials, sensors, food packaging applications were discussed. Additionally, the most recent challenges and prospects of hemicellulose-based materials are emphasized and examined in-depth. It is anticipated that in the near future, persistent scientific efforts will enable the renewable hemicellulose-based products to achieve practical applications.
Isolation, Functionalization And Applications Of Hemicelluloses And Their Derivatives

Abstract:Rat monoclonal antibody technology was introduced to investigate the distribution of (1 -> 4)-beta-D-xylans in plant cell wall by using a penta-1,4-xylanoside containing neoglycoprotein as an immunogen. A series of novel types of hemicellulosic derivatives including carboxymethyl, quaternized, amphoteric, carbamoylethyl carboxyethylated groups were synthesized. The chemical structures, reaction mechanisms, and rheological properties of these biopolymers were investigated by means of CLSM, FT-IR, NMR, AFM, SEM, TEM, XRD, and rheometer. The effects of reaction conditions such as reaction time, temperature, catalysts, and the amount of reagents on the degree of substitution (DS) were investigated in detail. Chemical modifications led to significant changes in physical and chemical properties (viscosity, hydrophobicity, thermoplastic performance, for instances) of hemicelluloses, and the resulting biopolymers may find a variety of potential applications in papermaking and biochemical fields. A series of soft materials such as films and hydrogels were obtained from hemicelluloses and their derivatives and applied in removal of heavy metal ions, drug delivery, and genetic attachment. This work opens up a new window for the utilization of hemicelluloses.
