Abstract:The baseline wander (BLW) in electrocardiogram (ECG) is a common disturbance that has a significant influence on the ECG wave pattern recognition. Many methods, such as IIR filter, mean filter, etc., can be used to correct BLW; However, most of them work on the original ECG signals. Compressed ECG data are economic for data storage and transmission, and if the baseline correction can be processed on them, it will be more efficient than we decompress them first and then do such correction. In this paper, we propose a new type of median filter CM_Filter, which works on the synopses of straight lines achieved from ECG by piecewise linear approximation (PLA) under maximum error bound. In CM_Filter, a heuristic strategy "Quick-Finding" is deduced by a property of straight lines in order to get the quality-assured median values from the synopses. The extended experimental tests demonstrate that the proposed filter is very efficient in execution time, and effective for correcting both slow and abrupt ECG baseline wander.

Abstract:Objective To propose a new method of Meyer multi-resolution approximation for eliminating ECG baseline drift.Methods By subtracting the orthogonal projection on V9 from ECG with baseline drift,the baseline drift was removed.Under the numerical analysis of multi-resolution approximation,the selection of wavelets,the orthogonal projection and the data length were discussed.At present,it was difficult to compare the eliminating results of baseline drift by different methods.The quantitative analysis was introduced.Common basis of results comparison was set up.Results Applying the method to the serious baseline drift ECG data from MIT-BIH database,the difference between the orthogonal projection of ECG with baseline drift on V9 and baseline drift was(0.3±3.6)μV.Conclusion About 30 s of ECG baseline drift can be removed using Meyer wavelet at level 9.
A Modiifed Real-time Filtering Method for Removal of Baseline Wander in ECG Signals Based on Zero-phase Filter

Abstract:As a noninvasive diagnostic technique, the electrocardiogram is indispensable in interventional therapy of heart diseases. During the process of data acquisition, it is important for removing baseline wander in real time. In this paper, we proposed a modified real-time filtering method for removal of baseline wander in ECG signals based on zero-phase filter. The modification of real-time filtering is achieved through the delay of data, which inherits the advantages of zero-phase filter in suppression of baseline wander, and meets the real-time requirement through a small time delay. We compared the results of straight zero-phase filtering and improved zero-phase filtering method by using CSE multi-lead database and MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, the results showed that two methods had the same effect in baseline wander suppression.

Abstract:In this paper, a prediction and real-time monitoring method for changing in ECG signals is proposed based on Kalman filter technique. It is important that the change point such as jump and drift could be predicted and diagnosed from the measurement, so as to keep it safely. The Kalman filter technique can be used in estimating system states in real-time way. The sudden changes of the estimation errors of system status can be used as the predictor for the physiologic changes. This method is validated in practice according to the experimental results.

Abstract:This paper presents a computationally efficient FIR (finite impulse response) filter for ECG (electrocardiogram) baseline wander removal. The proposed filter is based on frequency-response masking (FRM) technique, which reduces the number of multiplications by 90% compared to the conventional FIR filter. The filter specifications are optimized to obtain the highest SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) while minimizing the number of filter coefficients. The SNR performance of the proposed filter is evaluated using ECG signals from MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database with added baseline noises from MIT-BIH Noise Stress Test Database. Simulations show that the FRM filter is capable of removing most of baseline wander while preserves ECG signal.

Abstract:According to the World Health Organization, around 36% of the annual deaths are associated with cardiovascular diseases and 90% of heart attacks are preventable. Electrocardiogram signal, acquired whether during exercise stress test or resting conditions, allows cardiovascular disease diagnosis. However, during the acquisition, there is a variety of noises that may damage the signal quality thereby compromising their diagnostic potential. The baseline wander is one of the most undesirable noises. In this work, we propose a novel algorithm for BLW noise filtering using deep learning techniques. The model performance was validated using the QT Database and the MIT-BIH Noise Stress Test Database from Physionet. In addition, several comparative experiments were performed against state-of-the-art methods using traditional filtering as well as deep learning techniques. The proposed approach yields the best results on four similarity metrics, namely: the sum of squared distance, maximum absolute square, percentage of root distance, and cosine similarity with 5.20±7.96 au, 0.39±0.28 au, 50.45±29.60 au and, 0.89±0.1 au, respectively. The source codes of the proposed model as well as the implementation of related techniques are freely available on Github.

Abstract:One of the major noise components in electrocardiogram (ECG) is the baseline wander (BW). Effective methods for suppressing BW include the wavelet-based (WT) and the mathematical morphological filtering-based (MMF) algorithms. However, the T waveform distortions introduced by the WT and the rectangular/trapezoidal distortions introduced by MMF degrade the quality of the output signal. Hence, in this study, we introduce a method by combining the MMF and WT to overcome the shortcomings of both existing methods. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, artificial ECG signals containing a clinical BW are used for numerical simulation, and we also create a realistic model of baseline wander to compare the proposed method with other state-of-the-art methods commonly used in the literature. The results show that the BW suppression effect of the proposed method is better than that of the others. Also, the new method is capable of preserving the outline of the BW and avoiding waveform distortions caused by the morphology filter, thereby obtaining an enhanced quality of ECG.

Abstract:Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 17.3 million deaths per year. The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a non-invasive technique widely used for the detection of cardiac diseases. To increase diagnostic sensitivity, ECG is acquired during exercise stress tests or in an ambulatory way. Under these acquisition conditions, the ECG is strongly affected by some types of noise, mainly by baseline wander (BLW). In this work were implemented nine methods widely used for the elimination of BLW, which are: interpolation using cubic splines, FIR filter, IIR filter, least mean square adaptive filtering, moving-average filter, independent component analysis, interpolation and successive subtraction of median values in RR interval, empirical mode decomposition and wavelet filtering. For the quantitative evaluation, the following similarity metrics were used: absolute maximum distance, the sum of squares of distances and percentage root-mean-square difference. Several experiments were performed using synthetic ECG signals generated by ECGSYM software, real ECG signals from QT Database, artificial BLW generated by software and real BLW from the Noise Stress Test Database. The best results were obtained by the method based on FIR high-pass filter with a cut-off frequency of 0.67 Hz.

Abstract:To solve the problem of processing removal noise of electrocardiosignal Baseline Wander(BW),this paper presents a denoising algorithm based on digital filtering in wavelet domain.The electrocardiosignal is decomposited with the lifting wavelet,then processed through the digital high-pass filter on the highest level of scale coefficients and reconstructed with the removed baseline wander.Based on the noisy electrocardiosignal data in the MIT/BIH database,simulation studies on the proposed algorithm are done.Compared with traditional methods,simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a better balance between computational complexity and performance.MSE of the proposed algorithm is only 0.001 8 in 10 dB SNR condition.

Abstract:Removal of baseline wander is an important preprocessing step before manually or automatically interpreting Electrocardiography (ECG) records. However, baseline wander is usually mingled with the low-frequency part of ECG, which makes it difficult to fully remove baseline wander while preserving the original clinic information. To solve this problem, a real-time approach based on Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is presented in this paper. Experimental results on both simulated ECG and real ECG records of PTB database show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance in terms of preserving the original clinic information than those of well-know wavelet-based methods.
A New Method to Remove Baseline Drift in the Brain Blood Stream Signal

Abstract:Baseline drift is one of the important factors that affect the detection signals. At present it is very difficult to obtain ideal effect using many methods which filter baseline drift in the signal of brain blood stream in the process of measurement. In this paper a new method to remove baseline drift in the signal of brain blood stream was presented based on the cubic spline interpolation theory. Firstly, we detect some characteristic points in the original signal, and then fit the drifting baseline based on the cubic spline interpolation theory. Finally the original signal minus the baseline is the steady signal of brain blood stream. We had done some simulation experiments and lots of clinical tests, and removed perfectly the baseline drift in LabVIEW software program. Once the method to remove baseline drift is put into practice, its effect is good and its speed is fast, and it is easy to carry out .It has great application in brain wave monitor with embedded CPU and real time character, and it is also applied in other signal detectors.

Abstract:Removing baseline drift is an important step in preprocessing ECG signal. The traditional methods have disadvan-tages of large computation and poor results. This paper utilizes the morphology theory combined with the characteristics of ECG signal to propose a morphological method for removing the baseline drift, which uses different shapes and sizes to design a two-stage morphological filter and perform cascaded combination operations of closing-opening and opening-closing respectively. The proposed method is verified that it can maintain the morphological specificity, improve the SNR, reduce the MSE, and remove the noise efficiently.

Abstract:In order to calibrate the baseline shift of ECG signal, the combination methods of wavelet transform and adaptive filtering are proposed. The wavelet transform method is used to decompose the original ECG signal and the high-frequency components are used as reference input data. A new adaptive filtering algorithm, P-LMS based on the power function is proposed to conduct adaptive noise filtering.Compared with the traditional Normalized Least Mean Square(NLMS) algorithm, the proposed algorithm is precise. Using the simulated experiment and actual data in the MIT-BIH database, the method of combining P-LMS and wavelet transform is verified that can effectively correct the baseline shift and maintain the geometric characteristics of the ECG signal.

Abstract:Quantifying pulse diagnosis is to acquire and record pulse waveforms by a set of sensor firstly and then analyze these pulse waveforms. However, respiration and artifact motion during pulse waveform acquisition can introduce baseline drift. It is necessary, therefore, to remove the pulse waveform’s baseline drift in order to perform accurate pulse waveform analysis. This chapter presents a wavelet-based cascaded adaptive filter (CAF) to remove the baseline drift of pulse waveform. To evaluate the level of baseline drift, we introduce a criterion: energy ratio (ER) of pulse waveform to its baseline drift. Abstract:Baseline drift has a major impact on the preprocessing and feature extraction of the ECG signal. This paper analyzes the characteristics of baseline drift of Holter ECG signals. A novel method based on mathematical morphology combined with adaptive filter is proposed to eliminate the baseline drift in Holter ECG. The method uses morphological method to remove high frequency noise and extract the baseline drift. The baseline drift is subsequently used as the reference input of an adaptive filter for noise cancellation. Experiments show that the method is capable of effectively removing the ECG baseline drift with simple computation.

Abstract:Analyzing the pulse wave is an important method to diagnosis the status of human health. Generally the directly acquired signal contains varying degrees of baseline drift which is usually caused by breathing and physical movement, it mostly influences the accuracy of signal analysis and must be eliminated. This article presented a cascade filter framework to remove the baseline drift of pulse wave. The first stage zero phase filter (ZPF) roughly reduced the trend of the baseline drift. The second stage of the removed method considered the signal features. Through the pulse waveform reference points' accurate location and cubic spline estimation, we completely eliminated the rest drift. Compared with the other methods, e.g. wavelet-based filtering, morphological filtering, empirical mode decomposition (EMD) filtering, the experimental result showed that the proposed method had not only better effect, but also small calculation cost, and the scheme was more suitable for actual application.

Abstract:This paper presents a robust, computationally simple, real-time algorithm for automated denoising of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal and detection of the cardinal points for further extraction of clinical information. The algorithm uses a single median filter for its operation in artifact elimination stage as well as for detection of the cardinal points or peaks from the clean ECG signal. The window size of the filter is changed for baseline and power line artifact removal process. Specific segments of the signal such as QRS complex along with P and T wave are also segregated using the same filter. The individual peak instants are detected using the method of slope detection and thresholding. The ECG records are downloaded from MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database. The proposed method is capable to detect all the peaks or cardinal points from the denoised ECG signal for all the records under the present study. Results show that the algorithm attains an average detected accuracy of 99.65% along with a positive predictive rate of 100%. The proposed algorithm has the potential to be applied in real-time ECG recording devices for denoising and feature extraction purpose.

Abstract:Objective:To improve the detection of QRS complex in ECG signal with median filter,introduce extra criterions to determine the wave type and QRS boundaries.Methods:Based on the difference method,firstly noises such as 50 Hz noise and baseline drift were removed.After extracting amplitude and slope information of ECG signal,the ups and downs of the wave were obtained by adaptive thresholds.Results:Virtual detection system wes establish based on LabVIEW.The system was tested by MIT-BIH standard ECG database,and the correct rate reached 99.69%.Conclusion:Experiments show that the measurement is of high precision and lay the foundation for clinical ECG diagnosis.

Abstract:Abstract Background Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, an important indicator for heart problems, is commonly corrupted by a low-frequency baseline wander (BW) artifact, which may cause interpretation difficulty or inaccurate analysis. Unlike current state-of-the-art approach using band-pass filters, wavelet transforms can accurately capture both time and frequency information of a signal. However, extant literature is limited in applying wavelet transforms (WTs) for baseline wander removal. In this study, we aimed to evaluate 5 wavelet families with a total of 14 wavelets for removing ECG baseline wanders from a semi-synthetic dataset. Methods We created a semi-synthetic ECG dataset based on a public QT Database on Physionet repository with ECG data from 105 patients. The semi-synthetic ECG dataset comprised ECG excerpts from the QT database superimposed with artificial baseline wanders. We extracted one ECG excerpt from each of 105 patients, and the ECG excerpt comprised 14 s of randomly selected ECG data. Twelve baseline wanders were manually generated, including sinusoidal waves, spikes and step functions. We implemented and evaluated 14 commonly used wavelets up to 12 WT levels. The evaluation metric was mean-square-error (MSE) between the original ECG excerpt and the processed signal with artificial BW removed. Results Among the 14 wavelets, Daubechies-3 wavelet and Symlets-3 wavelet with 7 levels of WT had best performance, MSE = 0.0044. The average MSEs for sinusoidal waves, step, and spike functions were 0.0271, 0.0304, 0.0199 respectively. For artificial baseline wanders with spikes or step functions, wavelet transforms in general had lower performance in removing the BW; however, WTs accurately located the temporal position of an impulse edge. Conclusions We found wavelet transforms in general accurately removed various baseline wanders. Daubechies-3 and Symlets-3 wavelets performed best. The study could facilitate future real-time processing of streaming ECG signals for clinical decision support systems.

Abstract:The basic features of digital baseline estimation for multi-channel pulse height analysis are introduced. The weight-function of minimum-noise baseline filter is deduced with functional variational calculus. The frequency response of this filter is also deduced with Fourier thansformation, and the in fluence of parameters on amplitude frequency response characteristics is discussed. With MATLAB software,the noise voltage signal from the charge sensitive preamplifier is simulated, and the process ing effect of minimum-noise digital baseline estimation is verified. According to the results of this re search, digital baseline estimation method can estimate baseline optimally, and it is very suitable to be used in digital multi-channel pulse height analysis.
