Abstract:The use of fluidized bed reactors in chemistry, petrochemistry, and oil refining continues to be a topical issue. That said, the problem of the separation from the gas mixtures of the dispersed phase leaving the fluidized bed of the reactor still requires solution, and this issue is of great importance because the quantity of solid particles decreases over time, affecting the fluidization efficiency. Cyclones are usually used to return solid material back to the bed. In this study, we propose an alternative separator for the upper part of a fluidized bed reactor. The developed separator with arc-shaped elements is used to separate the solid particles and gas. The particles hit against the elements, then move along the V-shaped baffles into the hopper and return to the fluidized bed. Since the fluidized bed behavior depends on the material properties, the purpose of the study was to determine the critical size of the particles suspended in the reactor gas stream above the bed, which will help further determine the separator efficiency and design a vertical space above the bed to prevent large amounts of the bed material from being entrained by the gas stream from the reactor. In the work, studies conducted on the experimental setup determine the operating efficiency of the device, depending on the inlet air velocity and the particle size. Numerical simulation is performed in a software package for applied mathematical simulation. The study identifies the velocities of fluidization onset and dispersed phase entrainment for particles with different densities. The particle size is estimated that can be entrained upwards by the gas stream from the fluidized bed and will enter the developed separator with arc-shaped elements, while retaining a sufficient level of efficiency. For inlet velocity ranging from 0.26 to 0.74 m/s, the critical diameter at a density of 3580 kg/m 3 is estimated to be 52.5–98 μm and the particle range is 37.1 to 69.2 μm for a density of 7000 kg/m 3 .
