Abstract:Beneath an urban environment there are many tunnels carrying roads and railways. At the same time urban development involves the construction of high-rise buildings that require deep foundation. The influence of bored piles on existing tunnel is a common interaction problem especially in soft ground of Shanghai. This paper assesses the influence of pile group on existing tunnels using the finite-element method due to the lack of theoretical method to calculate the settlement field around piles. In the first part of paper 2-D plane strain approach is used to analyze the response of a tunnel to loading of piles located on one side of the tunnel. Some parametric studies including foundation layouts and clear distance between piles and existing tunnels are carried out. Then a case study of Pacific Square II which minimum distance between pile foundation from No.1 subway in Shanghai is only 15m is introduced. The predictions of numerical simulations are compared with field measurements. The loading of piles causes global downward movement and squatting of the tunnel lining. The crown settlement of tunnel lining reduces with the increasing of S1, (the spacing along the pile rows), S2 (the spacing between the pile rows) and S3 (the minimum spacing between the pile rows and the tunnel). The horizontal displacement of tunnel lining is much smaller than vertical displacement. The bending moment distribution behaves clockwise rotation due to pile loading.
