Abstract:In this study, to measure the frequency drift characteristics of the narrow-linewidth laser, we provide a method with high accuracy and adjustable measuring range that can be applied in a resonant optical gyro (ROG) system. In an ROG system, the laser frequency drift characteristics, such as fluctuation range and frequency, influence the performance of the closed-loop frequency-locked module. To measure the above performance of the laser, we proposed a novel measurement system based on the Fabry-Perot cavity. We proved the feasibility of the scheme through theory and simulation. Then, the calibration of the experimental device and the measurement of the tested laser were completed. The measurement accuracy of this method is 1.2 kHz, and the measurement range reaches +/- 60 MHz, which can be adjusted by the modulation index. The results show that the laser has a frequency fluctuation of 30 MHz in the stabilization stage, and there is mainly a low-frequency component under 5 Hz in the frequency domain of the laser frequency fluctuation. Furthermore, this measurement scheme can be applied in other fiber sensor systems to evaluate the effect of laser frequency fluctuation on system output performance.

Abstract:By direct application of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we numerically calculate the fundamental dimensional fluctuations of crystalline CaF2 whispering gallery resonators in the case of structural damping, and the limit that this noise imposes on the frequency stability of such resonators at both room and cryogenic temperatures. We analyze elasto-optic noise - the effect of Brownian dimensional fluctuation on frequency via the strain-dependence of the refractive index - a noise term that has so far not been considered for whispering-gallery resonators. We find that dimensional fluctuation sets a lower limit of 1E-16 to the Allan deviation for a 10-millimeter-radius sphere at 5 K, predominantly via induced fluctuation of the refractive index.

Abstract:We present a joint theoretical and experimental characterization of thermo-refractive noise in high quality factor ($Q$), small mode volume ($V$) optical microcavities. Analogous to well-studied stability limits imposed by Brownian motion in macroscopic Fabry-Perot resonators, microcavity thermo-refractive noise gives rise to a mode volume-dependent maximum effective quality factor. State-of-the-art fabricated microcavities are found to be within one order of magnitude of this bound. We confirm the assumptions of our theory by measuring the noise spectrum of high-$Q/V$ silicon photonic crystal cavities and apply our results to estimate the optimal performance of proposed room temperature, all-optical qubits using cavity-enhanced bulk material nonlinearities.

Abstract:The transfer cavity is a very important frequency reference for laser stabilization and is widely used for applications such as precision measurements and laser cooling of ions or molecules. But the non-linear response of the piezoelectric ceramic transducer (PZT) in the Fabry-Perot cavity limits the performance of the laser stabilization. Thus, measuring and controlling such non-linearity is essential. Here we report an in situ, optical method to characterize this non-linearity by measuring the resonant signals of a dual-frequency laser. The differential measurement makes it insensitive to the laser and cavity drifts, while maintaining a very high sensitivity. It can be applied for various applications with PZTs, especially in an optical lab.

Abstract:The frequency stability of nanomechanical resonators (NMR) dictates the performance level of many state-of-the-art sensors (e.g., mass, force, temperature, radiation) that relate an external physical perturbation to a resonance frequency shift. While this is obviously of fundamental importance, accurate models and understandings of sources of frequency instability are not always available. The contribution of thermomechanical noise to frequency stability has been well studied in recent years and is often the fundamental performance limitation. Frequency stability limited by thermal fluctuation noise has attracted less interest but is nevertheless of fundamental importance notably in temperature sensing applications. In particular, temperature-sensitive NMR have become promising candidates for replacing traditional bolometers in infrared radiation sensing. However, reaching the ultimate detectivity limit of thermal radiation sensors requires their noise to be dominated by fundamental thermal fluctuation, which has not been demonstrated to date. In this work, we first develop a theoretical model for computing the frequency stability of NMR by considering the effect of both additive phase noise (i.e., thermomechanical, and experimental detection noise) and thermal fluctuation noise in a close-loop frequency tracking scheme. We thereafter validate this model experimentally and observe thermal fluctuation noise in SiN drum resonators of various sizes. Our work shows that by using resonators of specific characteristics--such as high temperature sensitivity, high mechanical quality factors, and high mass-to-thermal-conductance ratio--one can minimize additive phase noise below thermal fluctuation noise. This paves the way for NMR-based radiation sensors that can reach the fundamental detectivity limit of thermal radiation sensing and outperform existing technologies.

Abstract:Thermal fluctuations in the coatings used to make high reflectors are becoming significant noise sources in precision optical measurements and are particularly relevant to advanced gravitational-wave detectors. There are two recognized sources of coating thermal noise; mechanical loss and thermal dissipation. Thermal dissipation causes thermal fluctuations in the coating which produce noise via the thermoelastic and thermorefractive mechanisms. We treat these mechanisms coherently, give a correction for finite coating thickness, and evaluate the implications for Advanced LIGO.

Abstract:High-finesse, open-geometry microcavities have recently emerged as a versatile tool for enhancing interactions between photons and material systems, with a range of applications in quantum optics and quantum information science. However, mechanical vibrations pose a considerable challenge to their operation within a closed-cycle cryostat, particularly when spatial tunability and free-space optical access are required. Here, we present the design and characterization of a system that can achieve $\sim$16 pm-rms passive mechanical stability between two high-finesse mirrors while permitting both three-dimensional positioning of the cavity mode and free-space confocal imaging. The design relies on two cascaded vibration isolation stages connected by leaf springs that decouple axial and lateral motion, and incorporates tuned-mass and magnetic damping. Furthermore, we present a technique for quantifying cavity length displacements similar to or larger than the cavity linewidth, allowing in-situ measurement of vibrations with and without active feedback. Our results facilitate operation of a tunable, high-finesse cavity within a closed-cycle cryostat, representing an enabling technology for cavity coupling to a variety of solid-state systems.

Abstract:We study the mechanical stability of a tunable high-finesse microcavity under ambient conditions and investigate light-induced effects that can both suppress and excite mechanical fluctuations. As an enabling step, we demonstrate the ultra-precise electronic stabilization of a microcavity. We then show that photothermal mirror expansion can provide high-bandwidth feedback and improve cavity stability by almost two orders of magnitude. At high intracavity power, we observe self-oscillations of mechanical resonances of the cavity. We explain the observations by a dynamic photothermal instability, leading to parametric driving of mechanical motion. For an optimized combination of electronic and photothermal stabilization, we achieve a feedback bandwidth of $500\,$kHz and a noise level of $1.1 \times 10^{-13}\,$m rms.
Cryogenic sapphire optical reference cavity with crystalline coatings at $\mathrm{ 1 \times 10^{-16}}$ fractional instability

Abstract:The frequency stability of a laser locked to an optical reference cavity is fundamentally limited by thermal noise in the cavity length. These fluctuations are linked to material dissipation, which depends both on the temperature of the optical components and the material properties. Here, the design and experimental characterization of a sapphire optical cavity operated at 10 K with crystalline coatings at 1069 nm is presented. Theoretical estimates of the thermo-mechanical noise indicate a thermal noise floor below $\mathrm{4.5\times10^{-18}}$. Major technical noise contributions including vibrations, temperature fluctuations, and residual amplitude modulation are characterized in detail. The short-term performance is measured via a three-cornered hat analysis with two other cavity-stabilized lasers, yielding a noise floor of $1\times10^{-16}$. The long-term performance is measured against an optical lattice clock, indicating cavity stability at the level of $2\times10^{-15}$ for averaging times up to 10,000 s.

Abstract:UNLABELLED Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), associated with arteriovenous malformations, is a genetic disease of the vascular system with a frequency of approx. 1:10,000. Genetic diagnosis serves to identify individuals at risk of developing the disease and is a useful tool for genetic counselling purposes. QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY Here we report on a child presenting severe arteriovenous malformations leading to heart failure. Her mother and grandmother present fewer symptoms of hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia. In this study we identify the cause of HHT in the family. METHODS Clinical examination, PCR, DNA sequencing, quantitative PCR, Southern blot, xray, ultrasound, cardiac catheterisation and angiocardiography. RESULTS Initially the sequence variant in c.392C>T in the endoglin gene was detected in the grandmother, but not in other affected family members. Further analyses revealed a deletion of exon 1 of endoglin, segregating with the phenotype. CONCLUSIONS This report points out the need for careful evaluation of molecular genetic findings, particularly in diseases with highly variable phenotype.

Abstract:We present a laser system based on a 48 cm long optical glass resonator. The large size requires a sophisticated thermal control and optimized mounting design. A self balancing mounting was essential to reliably reach sensitivities to acceleration of below $\Delta \nu / \nu$ < 2E-10 /g in all directions. Furthermore, fiber noise cancellations from a common reference point near the laser diode to the cavity mirror and to additional user points (Sr clock and frequency comb) are implemented. Through comparison to other cavity-stabilized lasers and to a strontium lattice clock an instability of below 1E-16 at averaging times from 1 s to 1000 s is revealed.

Tenfold reduction of Brownian noise in optical interferometry

Abstract:Thermally induced fluctuations impose a fundamental limit on precision measurement. In optical interferometry, the current bounds of stability and sensitivity are dictated by the excess mechanical damping of the high-reflectivity coatings that comprise the cavity end mirrors. Over the preceding decade, the mechanical loss of these amorphous multilayer reflectors has at best been reduced by a factor of two. Here we demonstrate a new paradigm in optical coating technology based on direct-bonded monocrystalline multilayers, which exhibit both intrinsically low mechanical loss and high optical quality. Employing these "crystalline coatings" as end mirrors in a Fabry-Pérot cavity, we obtain a finesse of 150,000. More importantly, at room temperature, we observe a thermally-limited noise floor consistent with a tenfold reduction in mechanical damping when compared with the best dielectric multilayers. These results pave the way for the next generation of ultra-sensitive interferometers, as well as for new levels of laser stability.

Towards a sub-kelvin cryogenic Fabry-Perot silicon cavity

Abstract:We report on the development of a sub-kelvin, single-crystal silicon Fabry-Perot cavity. Operating such a cavity below 1~K should reduce the thermal noise limit of the cavity, and by this way address the current limitations of ultrastable lasers. To further decrease mechanical losses, mirrors with silicon substrates and crystalline coatings are optically contacted to the spacer, resulting in a room-temperature finesse of 220,000. To operate our cavity at sub-kelvin temperatures, we use a dilution refrigerator able to reach temperatures down to 10 mK. We have designed a mechanical mount to house our cavity in such a cryostat, with optimized heat transfer that will decrease the cooldown time for temperatures below 1~K. The estimated thermal noise is projected to be $\sim 7{\times}10^{-19}$ at 100~mK. However, silicon cavities with crystalline mirror coatings at cryogenic temperatures have shown birefringence correlated frequency fluctuations as well as unknown additional noise mechanisms \cite{yu2023, kedar2023}. We have measured a room-temperature TEM$_{00}$ birefringent mode splitting of about 250 kHz. Understanding and measuring these noise mechanisms will be a key to attaining fractional frequency stabilities beyond state-of-the-art.

Abstract:We demonstrate two ultra-stable laser systems at 1064 nm by independently stabilizing two 10-cm-long Fabry-Perot cavities. The reference cavities are on a cubic spacer, which is rigidly mounted for both low sensitivity to environmental vibration and ability for transportation. By comparing against an independent ultra-stable laser at 578 nm via an optical frequency comb, the 1064 nm lasers are measured to have frequency instabilities of 6 x 10(-16) at 1 s averaging time.

Abstract:We present measurements of thermal noise in niobium and aluminium flexures. Our measurements cover the audio frequency band from 10Hz to 10kHz, which is of particular relevance to ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors, and span up to an order of magnitude above and below the fundamental flexure resonances at 50Hz - 300Hz. Our results are well-explained by a simple model in which both structural and thermoelastic loss play a role. The ability of such a model to explain this interplay is important for investigations of quantum-radiation-pressure noise and the standard quantum limit.

Thermal-noise Limits to the Frequency Stability of Burned Spectral Holes

Abstract:Techniques in frequency stabilization of lasers to fixed-spacer optical cavities have advanced to the point where the ultimate frequency stabilities are limited by thermal noise in the cavity materials for standard cavity configurations at room temperature. The use of spectral-hole burning (SHB) in laser stabilization has produced promising results in early experiments. In this letter we explore the thermal-noise limits to frequency stability in burned spectral holes. We compile known material parameters for a typical system used in SHB experiments (Eu 3+ doped Y 2 SiO 5 ) to make numerical estimates for the fundamental thermal-noise induced frequency instability in spectral-holes for the liquid-helium temperature and dilution temperature cases. These efforts can guide the design of future SHB experiments and clarify which important material parameters remain to be measured.

Abstract:The best measurements of space and time currently possible (e.g. gravitational wave detectors and optical reference cavities) rely on optical resonators, and are ultimately limited by thermally induced fluctuations in the reflective coatings which form the resonator. We present measurements of coating thermal noise in the audio band and show that for a standard ion beam sputtered coating, the power spectrum of the noise does not have the expected power-law behavior.

Abstract:Owing to their highly coherent emission and compact form factor, Brillouin lasers have been identified as a valuable asset for applications including portable atomic clocks, precision sensors, coherent microwave synthesis, and energy-efficient approaches to coherent communications. While the fundamental emission linewidth of these lasers can be very narrow, noise within dielectric materials leads to drift in the carrier frequency, posing vexing challenges for applications requiring ultrastable emission. A unified understanding of Brillouin laser performance may provide critical insights to reach new levels of frequency stability; however, existing noise models focus on only one or a few key noise sources, and do not capture the thermo-optic drift in the laser frequency produced by thermal fluctuations or absorbed power. Here, we develop a coupled-mode theory of Brillouin laser dynamics that accounts for dominant forms of noise in noncrystalline systems, capturing the salient features of the frequency and intensity noise for a variety of systems. As a result, theory and experiment can be directly compared to identify key sources of noise and the frequency bands they impact, revealing strategies to improve the performance of Brillouin lasers and pave the way for highly coherent sources of light on a chip. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.105.043506 ©2022 American Physical Society
