Abstract:This paper presents the detailed principle on the generation and detection of optical minimum shift keying (MSK) format for high-speed and high spectral efficiency WDM systems. 10.7Gb/s optical MSK data is successfully generated by experiment using the proposed scheme. The results show that optical MSK signal exhibits very compact optical spectrum, which is promising for high spectral efficiency WDM applications. Simulation results on dispersion and nonlinear tolerance comparison confirm that MSK signal has better dispersion tolerance and nonlinear tolerance compared with 50% duty cycle return-to-zero differential phase shift keying (RZ-DPSK) and 50% duty cycle RZ on-off-keying (RZ-OOK) formats.

Abstract:In this article optical minimum-shift keying (MSK) modulation format in 9x40 Gbit/s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) spacing of 100 GHz transmission systems is investigated and compared with return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) and return-to-zero (RZ). The performance of optical MSK in presence of amplification noise, chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects is analytically determined. Operations over a wide range of parameters, such as span input power, precompensation value, and chromatic dispersion parameter are performed; experimental results show that optical MSK demonstrates special performance in transmission distance, nonlinear effects, and dispersion tolerance.

Abstract:We propose an optical serial MSK modulation scheme to simplify the MSK signal transmitter structure. A simpler scheme of delay and interference replaces the conventional scheme with parallel transmitter structure. The principle of generating the optical modified MSK signal by this serial scheme is presented. With the proposed serial structure, the investigation on BER over fiber link clearly demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed scheme. © OSA/ SumSession 2011.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an optical minimum-shift-keying (MSK) transmitter using a single-quad Mach-Zehnder (MZ) in-phase and quadrature modulator, where four sub-Mach-Zehnder modulators are monolithically integrated on a main MZ superstructure. Using the proposed transmitter, a MSK signal at bit rate of B could be successfully generated by orthogonally superposing two low-speed (B/2) carrier-suppressed return-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying streams with a relative time offset, 1/B. MSK signals at bit rate of 20 and 80 Gbits/s were successfully generated using the proposed MSK transmitter. A continuous changed phase trajectory of the obtained MSK was confirmed using a complex spectrum analyzer. The filtering tolerance of the MSK was also characterized using a bandwidth-variable tunable filter.

Abstract:As a special case of continuous phase frequency-shift-keying (FSK), minimum-shift keying (MSK) exhibits some different properties compared with the traditional optical phase modulation formats, such as return-to-zero (RZ) differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) and differential-quadrature-phase-shift-keying (DQPSK). In this paper, we investigated the receiver performance degradation caused by laser frequency offset between laser frequency and delay interferometer (DI) phase, which is found to be the most critical impairment for the receiver performance in a practical optical phase modulated system. Results show that MSK system is about double times and six times more robust to frequency offsets than RZ-DPSK and RZ-DQPSK systems operating at the same 10Gb/s bit rate, respectively.

Abstract:Phase-modulated (PM) signals have recently been used in long-haul lightwave communication systems to reach record distances. Added directly to the signal phase, linear and nonlinear phase noise cause performance degradation in PM systems. Minimum-shift keying (MSK), as a special format of PM signals, presents some different features of phase noise tolerance. This paper investigates the effect of phase noise on the performance degradation in the 10Gb/s optical MSK systems and analyzes the contribution of phase noise to the bit error rate (BER), compared with the conventional PM format, 50% duty cycle optical return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) signals, in several typical local fiber dispersion transmission systems. The effect of intensity noise on the performance degradation in the corresponding transmission systems is also investigated.

Abstract:A novel 40-Gb/s constant envelope optical frequency shift keying (FSK) transmitter and the transmission characteristics are investigated both by simulation and experiment. Meanwhile, to increase the spectrum efficiency of FSK, we propose a novel optical minimum-shift keying (MSK) scheme and analyze its performance compared with other MSK schemes and other traditional modulation formats. Simulation and experimental results show that the novel FSK scheme could be a potential candidate for the future high speed transmission and label switching systems. And the novel MSK scheme deserves future deep research for its potential excellent performance.

Abstract:Minimum-shift keying (MSK) has the advantages of constant envelope, continuous phase, and high spectral efficiency, and it is applied in radio communication and optical fiber communication. MSK modulation of coherent detection is proposed in the ground-to-satellite laser communication system; in addition, considering the inherent noise of uplink, such as intensity scintillation and beam wander, the communication performance of the MSK modulation system with coherent detection is studied in the uplink ground-to-satellite laser. Based on the gamma-gamma channel model, the closed form of bit error rate (BER) of MSK modulation with coherent detection is derived. In weak, medium, and strong turbulence, the BER performance of the MSK modulation system is simulated and analyzed. To meet the requirements of the ground-to-satellite coherent MSK system to optimize the parameters and configuration of the transmitter and receiver, the influence of the beam divergence angle, the zenith angle, the transmitter beam radius, and the receiver diameter are studied. Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:A mismatch between laser frequency and delay interferometer (DI) phase is found to be the most critical impairment for the receiver performance in a practical phase-modulated (PM) system. This paper investigates the receiver performance degradation caused by frequency offset between optical signal and DI in a 10Gb/s minimum-shift keying (MSK) system, and compares it with the conventional PM formats, optical differential-phase-shift keying (DPSK) and differential-quadrature-phase-shift keying (DQPSK), which are nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) and 50% duty cycle return-to-zero (RZ). Results show that the MSK system is about double times and six times more robust to frequency offset than the DPSK and DQPSK systems operating at the same bit rate, respectively.

Abstract:We propose a modified minimum-shift keying (MSK) modulation scheme by applying the imbalanced bias on the in-phase and quadrature components of a MZM-based MSK modulator. This scheme enables constant envelope and continuous temporal phase shift of 100 Gb/s optical MSK signal by driving the MZMs with traditional sinusoidal signal instead of triangle signal. The principle of generating the optical MSK signal by this imbalanced scheme is presented. Theoretical analysis is given to modulated spectra, BER performance, residual dispersion tolerance and SPM tolerance. It is demonstrated that compared to the existing solutions the proposed scheme is able to decrease 2 dB receiver power penalty and improve SPM tolerance by 2 dB. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Suboptimal Maximum Likelihood Detection of On-Off Keying for A Wireless Optical Communication System

Abstract:This paper investigates a detection scheme without channel state information for wireless optical communication systems. Employing conventional on-off keying signals, we supposed that conditional probability density function P(r vertical bar 0) is much bigger than P(r vertical bar 0) when r < 0. Under this assumption, the suboptimal maximum likelihood scheme is obtained by utilizing the probability density function without channel information. Theoretical analysis shows the performance of the proposed scheme is close to the maximum likelihood symbol-by-symbol detection. Compared with the maximum likelihood symbol by symbol detection, Monte Carlo simulations show that the performance of the proposed scheme is about 0.62 dB loss for a gamma-gamma channel with a Rytov variance of 1 at the signal-to-noise ratio of 2 dB, but the efficient algorithm makes the real-time implementation of detection based on maximum likelihood feasible. Besides, the experiment is set up under 2 Gbps, and the experimental results match well with that of the theory and simulation. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America
