Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a digital coherent detection scheme for demodulation of optical MSK signal. A 10-Gb/s MSK signal synthesized by using a quad Mach-Zehnder in-phase/quadrature modulator was experimentally demodulated by the detection scheme.

In this paper, we propose a new heterodyne detection scheme to demodulate 40Gb/s MSK signal, compare it with the homodyne detection, and investigate the performance of the receiver in different schemes.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an optical minimum-shift-keying (MSK) transmitter using a single-quad Mach-Zehnder (MZ) in-phase and quadrature modulator, where four sub-Mach-Zehnder modulators are monolithically integrated on a main MZ superstructure. Using the proposed transmitter, a MSK signal at bit rate of B could be successfully generated by orthogonally superposing two low-speed (B/2) carrier-suppressed return-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying streams with a relative time offset, 1/B. MSK signals at bit rate of 20 and 80 Gbits/s were successfully generated using the proposed MSK transmitter. A continuous changed phase trajectory of the obtained MSK was confirmed using a complex spectrum analyzer. The filtering tolerance of the MSK was also characterized using a bandwidth-variable tunable filter.

Abstract:We demonstrate a digital optical communication system based on minimum shift keying(MSK)signal transmission with coherent detection.5-Gb/s MSK signal can transmit over a 160-km standard single mode fiber(SSMF)without phase compensation.At the receiver,we use data-aided channel estimation and frequency domain equalization(FDE)techniques in the digital signal processing(DSP)algorithm,then analyze its performance characteristics compared with quadrature phase shift keying(QPSK)format.The simulation results show that the MSK format will be a potential candidate for next-generation access network.

Abstract:This paper presents the detailed principle on the generation and detection of optical minimum shift keying (MSK) format for high-speed and high spectral efficiency WDM systems. 10.7Gb/s optical MSK data is successfully generated by experiment using the proposed scheme. The results show that optical MSK signal exhibits very compact optical spectrum, which is promising for high spectral efficiency WDM applications. Simulation results on dispersion and nonlinear tolerance comparison confirm that MSK signal has better dispersion tolerance and nonlinear tolerance compared with 50% duty cycle return-to-zero differential phase shift keying (RZ-DPSK) and 50% duty cycle RZ on-off-keying (RZ-OOK) formats.

Abstract:A novel approach for the generation of optical minimum shift keying (MSK) signals is presented. The transmitter is based on merely one phase modulator (PM), which is driven by a phase controller. The receiver uses direct detection based on the Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZI) and optical balanced receiver. In this paper, firstly the detailed principle on optical MSK generation and detection is derived and analyzed. Then, 40Gb/s optical MSK signal based on this scheme is successfully generated and transmitted over several fiber links (SMF+DCF) with only the first order dispersion compensation. Finally, the performance of the MSK based on PM is compared with that of the MSK based on other two known schemes, in terms of waveform, phase and spectrum. Simulation results show that not only this approach has a simpler architecture for the optical MSK transmitter, and but also the optical MSK generated has better performance.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the simultaneous detection of 10-Gbit/s quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) × 2-channel Fourier-encoded synchronous optical code division multiplexing (FE-SOCDM) signals using a digital coherent receiver, for the first time. First, we analytically verify that simultaneous detection can be achieved with an N-point discrete Fourier transform (DFT) using digital signal processing (DSP) because the N-channel Fourier encoding corresponds to an N × N inverse DFT, then the operation is experimentally confirmed. Simultaneous detection of 10-Gbit/s QPSK × 2-channel FE-SOCDM signals is evaluated. The proposed scheme dramatically expands the capability of OCDM systems.

Abstract:In this article optical minimum-shift keying (MSK) modulation format in 9x40 Gbit/s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) spacing of 100 GHz transmission systems is investigated and compared with return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) and return-to-zero (RZ). The performance of optical MSK in presence of amplification noise, chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects is analytically determined. Operations over a wide range of parameters, such as span input power, precompensation value, and chromatic dispersion parameter are performed; experimental results show that optical MSK demonstrates special performance in transmission distance, nonlinear effects, and dispersion tolerance.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simplified coherent receiver based on heterodyne detection with only two balanced photodetectors and two analog-to-digital converters. The polarization diversity hybrid can be simplified relative to the conventional one. The detected intermediate frequency signals are first downconverted to baseband with inphase and quadrature separation. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrated the eight-channel 50 Gb/s polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying WDM signal with heterodyne detection based on digital signal processing over 1040 km single-mode fiber 28 with erbium-doped fiber amplifier only amplification.

Abstract:This paper presents the generation and the performance evaluation of an optical quadrature minimum shift keying (QMSK). The performance of our optical QMSK modulated system is evaluated and compared with those of traditional phase shift keying (PSK) and minimum shift keying (MSK) modulated systems, via simulation, in terms of receiver sensitivity, dispersion tolerance and self-phase modulation (SPM) penalty. The proposed scheme shows that the QMSK format offers a few transmission advantages comparing with than that of the other traditional modulation formats under SPM penalty.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).
