Abstract:The giant magnetostriction is exhibited not only by intermetallic compounds of rare-earth elements, but also by some composite materials. The aim of this paper is to present results of studies on magnetostriction of the composite consisting of carbonyl iron particles displaced in the matrix made of a silicone rubber. The samples of the obtained composite were placed in the magnetic field with induction of 0-0.8 T, produced by the PEM-1022LS magnetic system. The longitudinal magnetostriction of samples was measured by strain gauge. Three different tests were performed: 1) increase and decrease magnetic field on three different volume fraction composites with particles randomly oriented, namely, 0, 15% and 27% and 2) increase and decrease magnetic field on three different composites with the same volume fraction of particles of varied orientation, namely, randomly, vertically and parallelly and 3) increase and decrease magnetic field three times without break on the composite with particles randomly oriented. Results indicate that 1) for the composites the magnetostrictive effects only became observable until the volume fraction of particles excess a critical value and its magnetization generally increase with increasing magnetic field and 2) the orientation of the particles influence the magnetostrictive performance of the composites significantly and 3) with the increase of times of tests, the saturation strain decayed and some remanent magnetostriction existed after switching off the magnetic field in each cycle. The theoretical model we proposed explained the tests results qualitificationally.
