Abstract:A survey has been carried out in 98 households in Beijing. The survey included occupants' presence at home and their energy related behaviors as well as the socio-economic characteristics such as income level, family composition and size, dwelling composition and size. The internal heat gain patterns in residential buildings, with the emphasis on the effects of socio-economic characteristics on internal heat gain patterns were presented. Results showed that the heat gains relating to human metabolisms account for most of the total internal heat gains in residential buildings. As for the effects of the socio-economic characteristics, it is concluded that family size and income level are the major determinants relating to the internal heat gain patterns in residences. Accordingly, both by family size groups and by income level groups, average indexes of internal heat gains are obtained, varying between 230 W and 450 W.
