Abstract:Uncertainty measure in data fusion applications is a hot topic; quite a few methods have been proposed to measure the degree of uncertainty in Dempster-Shafer framework. However, the existing methods pay little attention to the scale of the frame of discernment (FOD), which means a loss of information. Due to this reason, the existing methods cannot measure the difference of uncertain degree among different FODs. In this paper, an improved belief entropy is proposed in Dempster-Shafer framework. The proposed belief entropy takes into consideration more available information in the body of evidence (BOE), including the uncertain information modeled by the mass function, the cardinality of the proposition, and the scale of the FOD. The improved belief entropy is a new method for uncertainty measure in Dempster-Shafer framework. Based on the new belief entropy, a decision-making approach is designed. The validity of the new belief entropy is verified according to some numerical examples and the proposed decision-making approach.
Approximations and uncertainty measures in incomplete information systems

Abstract:There are mainly two methodologies dealing with uncertainty measurement issue in rough set theory: pure rough set approach and information theory approach. Pure rough set approach is based on the concepts of accuracy, roughness and approximation accuracy proposed by Pawlak. Information theory approach is based on Shannon’s entropy or its variants. Several authors have extended the information theory approach into incomplete information systems. However, there are few studies on extending the pure rough set approach to incomplete information systems. This paper focuses on constructing uncertainty measures in incomplete information systems by pure rough set approach. Three types of definitions of lower and upper approximations and corresponding uncertainty measurement concepts including accuracy, roughness and approximation accuracy are investigated. Theoretical analysis indicates that two of the three types can be used to evaluate the uncertainty in incomplete information systems. Experiments on incomplete real-life data sets have been conducted to test the two selected types (the first type and the third type) of uncertainty measures. Results show that the two types of uncertainty measures are effective.

Abstract:The uncertainty evaluation process of imperfect experimental data is presented in this paper. In the process, data neither in steady state nor under normal distribution compared with the conventional assumptions are considered. Results of the evaluation show that the uncertainty is asymmetry to the mean of the data while symmetry in conventional way. Furthermore, three ways to deal with the uncertainty propagation are discussed, and the probability propagation is simulated by Monte Carlo method.

Abstract:Uncertainty quantification of complex technical systems is often based on a computer model of the system. As all models such a computer model is always wrong in the sense that it does not describe the reality perfectly. The purpose of this article is to give a review of techniques which use observed values of the technical systems in order to take into account the inadequacy of a computer model in uncertainty quantification. The techniques reviewed in this article are illustrated and compared by applying them to applications in mechanical engineering.

Abstract:A covering information system as the generalization of an information system is an important model in the field of artificial intelligence. Uncertainty measurement is a critical evaluating tool. This paper investigates uncertainty measurement for a covering information system. The concept of information structures in a covering information system is first described by using set vectors. Then, dependence between information structures in a covering information system is introduced. Next, the axiom definition of granularity measure of uncertainty for covering information systems is proposed by means of its information structures, and based on this axiom definition, information granulation and rough entropy in a covering information system are proposed. Moreover, information entropy and information amount in a covering information system are also considered. Finally, we conduct a numerical experiment on the congressional voting records data set that comes from UCI Repository of machine learning databases, and based on this numerical experiment, effectiveness analysis from the angle of statistics is given to evaluate the performance of uncertainty measurement for a covering information system. These results will be helpful for understanding the essence of uncertainty in a covering information system.

A new theoretical and technological system of imprecise-information processing has been founded in Principles of Imprecise-Information Processing: A New Theoretical and Technological System[1] which is different from fuzzy technology. The system has clear hierarchy and rigorous structure, which results from the formation principle of imprecise information and has solid mathematical and logical bases, and which has many advantages beyond fuzzy technology. The system provides a technological platform for relevant applications and lays a theoretical foundation for further research.

Abstract:An information system as a database that stands for relationships between objects and attributes is an important mathematical model. An image information system is an information system where each of its information values is an image and its information structures embody internal features of this type of information system. Uncertainty measurement is an effective tool for evaluation. This paper explores measures of uncertainty for an information system by using the proposed information structures. The distance between two objects in an image information system is first given. After that, the fuzzy Tcos-equivalence relation, induced by this system by using Gaussian kernel method, is obtained, where Gaussian kernel is based on this distance. Next, information structures of this system are described by set vectors, dependence between information structures is studied and properties of information structures are given by using inclusion degree, and application for information structures and uncertainty measures of an image information system are investigated by the information structures. Moreover, effectiveness analysis is done to show the feasibility of the proposed measures from the angle of statistics. Finally, an application of the proposed measurement for attribute reduction is given. These results will be helpful for understanding the essence of uncertainty in an image information system.

Abstract:In this paper we address uncertainty measures of roughness of knowledge and rough sets by introducing rough entropy in incomplete information systems. We make only one assumption about unknown values: the real value of a missing attribute is one from the attribute domain.However,we do not assume which one. We prove that the rough entropy of knowledge and the rough entropy of rough sets decrease monotonously as the granularity of information smaller through finer partitionings. These conclusions are helpful people to understand the essence of rough set theory and essential to seek new efficient algorithm of knowledge reduction in incomplete information systems.

Abstract:An information system as a database that represents relationships between objects and attributes is an important mathematical model. An interval-valued information system is a generalized model of single-valued information systems. As important evaluation tools in the field of machine learning, measures of uncertainty can quantify the dependence and similarity between two targets. However, the existing measures of uncertainty for interval-valued information systems have not been thoroughly researched. This paper is devoted to the study of new measures of uncertainty for an interval-valued information system. Information structures are first introduced in a given interval-valued information system. Then, the dependence between two information structures is depicted. Next, new measures of uncertainty for an interval-valued information system are investigated by using the information structures. As an application of the proposed measures, the rough entropy of a rough set is proposed by means of information granulation. Finally, a numerical experiment on the Face recognition dataset is presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed measures, and a statistical effectiveness analysis is conducted. The results are helpful for understanding the essence of uncertainty in interval-valued information systems.

Abstract:Pervasive computing is typically highly sensor-driven, but sensors provide only evidence of fact rather than facts themselves. The uncertainty of sensor data will affect each component in a pervasive computing system, which may decrease the quality of its provided services. We provide a general model to represent semantics of uncertainty in different levels (e.g., sensor, lower-level context and higher-level context). Within our model, fine-grained approaches are applied to evaluate and propagate uncertainties. They will help to resolve the uncertainty in each process of context management so that the effect of uncertainty on system services will be minimised.

Abstract:Abstract Basic uncertain information is a newly proposed normative formulation to express and model uncertain information. This study further generalizes this concept by introducing the concept of refined interval of discourse in which the true value is known to be included. Hence, we define some new definitions of relative basic uncertain information, relative certainty/uncertainty degree and comprehensive certainty/uncertainty with some related measurements and analysis. With the introduced uncertain data type, we define two corresponding aggregation operators, namely, the relative basic uncertain information valued weighted arithmetic mean operator and the interval-induced relative basic uncertain information valued ordered weight averaging operator. An application of the proposed concepts and methods in multi-agents evaluation is provided.

Error Detection and Uncertainty Modeling for Imprecise Data

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method to derive and model data uncertainty from imprecise data. We view data imprecision and errors as the outcome of the precise data exposed to some uncertain channels, and our scheme is to directly derive the data uncertainty model from imprecise data, such that the derived data uncertainty information may be integrated into the succeeding mining process. To achieve the goal, we propose an expectation maximization (EM) based approach to detect erroneous data entries from the input data. The data uncertainty models are constructed by applying statistical analysis to the detected errors. Experimental results show that the proposed error detection approach can locate data errors and suggest alternative data entry values to improve classifiers built from imprecise data. In addition, the uncertain models derived for each individual attributes are shown to be close to the genuine uncertainty models used to corrupt the data.
Psychological Information Entropy and Its Applications to Reliability Engineering

Abstract:In general, information contains both of the physical attributes and the psychological attributes. For these two kind attributes of information, this paper discussed the incompleteness of the axioms system of the current information entropy theories. It is necessary to add the condition of boundedness to the axioms system when it is used to measure the uncertainty of psychological information. A new family of information entropy using a convex-concave function is introduced for satisfying the psychological attributes of information. And based on the psychological information entropy function, the divergence measures between two probability distributions of psychological information defined as Wang-Huang divergences are formulated. For the boundedness attributes of the psychological information entropy function and not requiring the condition of absolute continuity to be satisfied by the probability distributions involved, Wang-Huang divergences are totally different with the Kullback-Leiber divergences. The new measures are well characterized by the properties of non-negativity, finiteness. More importantly, their close relationship with the variation and the probability of misclassification error are established in terms of bounds illustrated in numerical examples. These bounds are crucial in many applications of divergence measures such as in the quality and reliability engineering applications.

Abstract:Rough set theory is a new mathematical tool to deal with vagueness and uncertainty in artificial intelligence. Approximation accuracy, knowledge granularity and entropy theory are three main approaches to uncertainty research in classical Pawlak information system, which have been widely applied in many practical issues. Based on uncertainty measures in Pawlak information systems, we propose rough degree, knowledge discernibility and rough entropy in interval-valued information systems, and investigate some important properties of them. Finally, the relationships between knowledge granulation, knowledge discerniblity and rough degree have been also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Information with uncertainty and imprecision is inherently presented in engineering design and manufacturing. The nature of uncertainty and imprecision is incompleteness. The incompleteness is a typical feature in earlier product design phases. Product design is essentially viewed as a process of reducing the incompleteness in the description of conceptual design. Some methods and strategies for the preliminary engineering design, calculation, and modeling in relational database systems have been proposed to process imprecise and uncertain information. Product data model, being a core of intelligent manufacturing system, consists of all concerned data in the product life cycle. EXPRESS-G is a powerful tool to develop a product data model. This paper extends the EXPRESS-G to make it possible to represent information with uncertainty and imprecision.

Abstract:It is crucial to evaluate reliability measures of a system over time, so that reliability-related decisions, such as maintenance planning and warranty policy, can be appropriately made for the system. However, accurately assessing system reliability becomes challenging if only limited amounts of reliability data are available. On the other hand, imprecise information related to reliability measures of a system can be collected based on experts' judgments/experiences, and these pieces of information may be, however, heterogeneous and come from multiple sources. By properly fusing the imprecise information, reliability bounds of a system can be assessed to facilitate the ensuing reliability-related decision-making. In this article, a constrained optimization framework is proposed to assess reliability bounds of multi-state systems by fusing multiple sources of imprecise information. The proposed framework is composed of three basic steps: (i) constructing a set of constraints for a resulting optimization formulation by representing all the imprecise information as functions of unknown parameters of the degradation models for components; (ii) identifying the upper and lower bounds of the system reliability function by resolving the resulting constrained optimization problem via a tailored feasibility-based particle swarm algorithm; and (iii) developing a model selection approach to choose the best component degradation model that matches with all the imprecise information to the maximum extent. A numerical example along with an engineering example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:The vast majority of stochastic simulation models are imperfect in that they fail to exactly emulate real system dynamics. The inexactness of the simulation model, or model discrepancy, can impact the predictive accuracy and usefulness of the simulation for decision-making. This paper proposes a systematic framework to integrate data from both the simulation responses and the real system responses to learn this discrepancy and quantify the resulting uncertainty. Our framework addresses the theoretical and computational requirements for stochastic estimation in a Bayesian setting. It involves an optimization-based procedure to compute confidence bounds on the target outputs that elicit desirable large-sample statistical properties. We illustrate the practical value of our framework with a call center example and a manufacturing line case study.

Abstract:Engineering design under uncertainty has gained considerable attention in recent years. A variety of reliability analysis strategies and methodologies are taken into account and applied increasingly to accommodate uncertainties. There exist two different types of uncertainties in practical engineering application: aleatory uncertainty, which is classified as objective and irreducible uncertainty with sufficient information on input uncertainty data and epistemic uncertainty, which is a subjective and reducible uncertainty that stems from a lack of knowledge on input uncertainty data. The nature of uncertainty depends on the mathematical theory within which problem situations are formalized. When sufficient data is available, probability theory is very effective to quantify uncertainty. However, when data is scarce or there is lack of information, the probabilistic methodology may not be appropriate. Among several alternative tools, possibility theory and evidence theory have proved to be computationally efficient and stable tools for reliability analysis under aleatory and/or epistemic uncertainty involved in engineering systems. Thus this chapter first attempts to give a better understanding of uncertainty in engineering design with a holistic view of its classifications, theories and design consideration, and then discusses general topics of foundations and applications of possibility theory and evidence theory. The overview includes theoretical research, computational development and performability improvement about possibilistic and evidential methodologies in the area of reliability during recent years, and it especially reveals the capability and characteristics of quantifying uncertainty from different angles. Finally, perspectives on future research directions are stated.

Abstract:This monograph surveys the interactions between information measures and estimation measures as well as their applications. The emphasis is on formulas that express the major information measures, such as entropy, mutual information and relative entropy in terms of the minimum mean square error achievable when estimating random variables contaminated by Gaussian noise. These relationships lead to wide applications ranging from a universal relationship in continuous-time nonlinear filtering to optimal power allocation in communication systems, to the simplified proofs of important results in information theory such as the entropy power inequality and converses in multiuser information theory.
