Abstract:With rapid depletion of petroleum-based fuels and the ever-increasing serious automobile-related air pollution, more works are encouraged to research on their clean alternatives. The most promising substitutes for the fossil fuels are alcohols. However, ethanol as a diesel fuel additive has a low cetane number(CN=8) limiting its addition into diesel fuel directly and is not dissolvable completely in diesel fuel at low temperature. Ethylene glycol dimethyl ether(EGDE), being of high oxygen content, has proven to be a good oxygenate for diesel fuel which can substantially decrease particulate matters in diesel engine exhaust emissions. It also has an excellent auto-ignition property with CN being 90 to 98 and therefore can be utilized as CN enhancer. In the present study, ethanol and EGDE were mixed in 1:1 proportion by volume to make new oxygenate blend as a clean diesel fuel additive. Results showed that ethanol, EGDE and diesel fuel can be miscible within a wide proportion range. When diesel fuel is added with 20% of the blend of ethanol and EGDE in 1:1 volumetric proportion, for the tested engine operating under partial load condition, smoke emissions can be lessened by about 50% to 80%, and CO can be reduced by up to about 70%. NOx emissions generally increase slightly. Power output generally drops, fuel consumption increases, and energy economy improves. The ratio of ethanol to EGDE has no remarkable effect on engine performances and exhaust emissions.
