Abstract:Two different potential models to the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been applied to investigate the thermoelastic parameter αKT of sodium chloride (NaCl) under high pressure and high temperature. The first one is the shell model (SM) potential that due to the short-range interaction when pairs of ions are moved together as is the case in that polarization of a crystal due to the motion of the positive and negative ions, and the second one is the two-body rigid-ion Born–Mayer–Huggins–Fumi–Tosi (BMHFT) potential with full treatment of long-range Coulomb forces. Particular attention is paid to the comparison of the SM- and BMHFT-MD simulations with the Debye model for the first time, and this model combines with ab initio calculations within local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) using ultrasoft pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis in the framework of density functional theory (DFT), and it takes into account the phononic effects within the quasi-harmonic approximation. Note that the MD calculated volumes using SM model is somewhat larger than both the DFT and experimental volumes despite not considering the temperature effect. Compared with SM potential, the MD simulated 300K isotherm of NaCl with BMHFT potential is very successful in reproducing accurately the measured volumes and the GGA calculated volumes. Generally, it is found that there exist minor differences between the LDA and GGA computed the thermoelastic parameter αKT of NaCl, with both average results giving good agreement with SM-MD simulations. At an extended pressure and temperature ranges, the variation of thermoelastic parameter αKT which play a central role in the formulation of approximate equations of state has also been predicted. The properties of NaCl are summarized in the pressure range of 0–300kbar and the temperature up to 2000K.
Molecular Dynamics Study of Homogeneous Nucleation in Supercooled Clusters of Sodium Bromide

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out on clusters comprised of 108, 256, 500, and 864 Na+Br− ion pairs represented by a Born–Mayer–Hugins interaction potential. Clusters with free boundaries are chosen in order to avoid the interference with nucleation caused by periodic boundary conditions. The melting point increases with increasing size of cluster as expected. The nucleation has been found to start near the surface of a NaBr cluster. The rates of nucleation in melted clusters are estimated based on classical nucleation theory. The interfacial free energies of 73.3–76.4mJ/m2 in temperature range of 400–550 K derived from kinetics of freezing are in the same order of magnitude as those predicted by Turnbull's relation and Buckle and Ubbelohde's observation. Sizes of critical nuclei are inferred from classical expressions and Voronoi polyhedra analyses.

Abstract:In recent experiments on sodium chloride clusters structural transitions between nanocrystals with different cuboidal shapes were detected. Here we present results for the thermodynamics and dynamics of one of these clusters (NaCl)35Cl−. As the time scales for the structural transitions can be much longer than those accessible by conventional dynamics simulations, we use a master equation to describe the probability flow within a large sample of potential energy minima. We characterize the processes contributing to probability flow between the different nanocrystals, and obtain rate constants and activation energies for comparison with the experimental values.

Abstract:The melting-like transition in sodium clusters Na N , with N = 55, 92, and 142, is studied by using constant-energy molecular dynamics simulations. An orbital-free version of the Car−Parrinello technique is used that scales linearly with system size, allowing for investigations of the thermal behavior of large clusters. The ground-state isomer of Na142 (an incomplete three-shell icosahedron) melts in two steps: the first (at ∼240 K) is characterized by the high mobility of atoms located on the cluster surface, and the second, homogeneous melting (at ∼270 K) involves diffusive motion of all of the atoms across the cluster. For the case of Na92, the icosahedral structure has a larger number of surface vacancies and melts in two well-separated steps, with surface melting at ∼130 K and homogeneous melting at ∼240 K. Na55, a complete two-shell icosahedron, melts in a single stage at ∼190 K. Our results on homogeneous melting for Na142 and Na92 are in excellent agreement with recent experimental determinations of melting temperatures and latent heats. However, the experimentally observed enhancement of the melting temperature around N = 55 is not reproduced by the calculations.

Abstract:Electron distribution and collective resonances of sodium metallic clusters, with the inhomogeneous jellium model, are studied by means of the Thomas-Fermi statistical method with a Wood-Saxon charge distribution for positive charge background and the sum-rule formalism. The density distribution of the valence electrons has been calculated for small sodium clusters and the “redshift” effect of collective resonances is found in agreement with the experimental results. The characteristic electronic shell effects of sodium clusters are found, which cannot be obtained by using homogeneous jellium model. The collective resonances in medium sized sodium clusters are predicted and the “redshift” effect decreases as cluster size increases.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations adopting the Born-Mayer-Huggins potential function were performed on a series of (NaCl)(108) clusters to observe their properties during heating and cooling and to monitor their nucleation events during freezing. Melting was found to be considerably sharper than that of clusters of softer materials whose solid form, unlike that of salt, is well-wetted by the melt. The resulting liquid clusters were observed to be greatly distorted from a spherical shape by capillary waves. The freezing of highly supercooled liquid clusters was found to be in qualitative accord with the classical theory of homogeneous nucleation. Moreover, the interfacial free energy parameter sigma(sl) inferred via nucleation theory, namely, 117.7, 117.6, and 119.6 mJ/m(2) at 500, 525, and 550 K, respectively, was close to the value predicted by the empirical Turnbull relation and in crude agreement with an experimental value determined at a much lower degree of supercooling and derived on a very different basis. Nevertheless, the thickness of the interface between the liquid and solid implied by Granasy's diffuse interface theory and by density functional calculations was so large in comparison with the radius of the critical nucleus according to the classical theory as to cast considerable doubt about the quantitative applicability of that theory to the present clusters. On the other hand, the MD nucleation rates, taken together with the prior and somewhat speculative experimental result, indicate that the classical theory performs better than the diffuse interface theory. Calculations and possible experiments to clarify the situation are outlined.

Abstract:Vibrational spectra of Si-n(n=4-7) clusters are obtained by using Fourier transformation of the velocity autocorrelation function of the atoms calculated based on Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics. By comparing the calculated vibrational spectra with experimental results, the ground-state atomic structures of the clusters can be determined. Changes in the vibrational spectra and the bond-length root-mean-square fluctuation with temperature are obtained. It is shown that the characteristic structures of the vibrational spectra with ground-state configuration start to disappear before the melting start points indicated by sharp increase in the bond-length root-mean-square fluctuation with temperature. Therefore the vibrational spectra cannot be used to identify the existence of these clusters in gases before the temperature going down well below their actual formation temperatures. Melting of these small silicon clusters starts at a temperature lower than the bulk material and undergoes transition states over a finite temperature range. The trajectories of the atoms in configuration space are used to show that the structure changes during the melting process depend closely on the ground-state structures. The calculated electronic energy levels of Si-4 cluster, as an example, indicate that during melting process there are considerable energy-level broadenings caused by atomic thermal motions.
Convergence from Clusters to the Bulk Solid: an Ab Initio Investigation of Clusters Nancln (N=2-40)

Abstract:The electronic structures of a series of sodium chloride clusters (NaCl)(n) (n = 2-40) cut out from the NaCl solid have been investigated by means of ab initio calculations. The calculation results demonstrated a good correlation of the topologic parameters N-d (the total amount of dangling bonds of a cut-out cluster) and beta (the average dangling bonds on each in-cluster atom) with the stability of clusters as well as an evident convergence from clusters to the bulk solid. Particularly, we found that the effective charges on the Cl anions are more site dependent than size dependent.

Abstract:We present an analysis of the temperature dependence of the optical response of small sodium clusters in a temperature range bracketing the melting phase transition. When the temperature increases, the mean excitation energy undergoes a red-shift and the plasmon is significantly broadened, in agreement with recent experimental data. Due to large thermal size and shape fluctuations the single-particle levels acquire a prominent width. We also predict a sharp increase of the static polarizability with temperature.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics(MD) simulations are carried out on the nucleation and recrystallization of(KCl)256,(KCl)500,and(KCl)864clusters with Born-Mayer-Huggins interaction potential.The melting temperatures,heats of fusion,average ionic diffusion coefficients,nucleation rates,solid-liquid interfacial free energies,and critical nucleus sizes are estimated and discussed based on the results of MD simulations and classical nucleation theory.On the other hand,solid state recrystallization from twin crystal(KCl)864cluster is observed during the thermal annealing process in MD simulations.The nucleation rates of recrystallization of(KCl)864 are derived within 250-400 K.

Abstract:The microstructure of aqueous supercritical sodium chloride solution was investigated. by molecular dynamics simulation. Under supercritical conditions, the effect of density on the microstructure of aqueous supercritical sodium chloride solution is more pronounced than the effect of temperature. Under supercritical conditions, the g(Na)(Cl)(+)(-) (r) has a peak value at 0.261 nm, which indicates the association between Na+ and Cl-. The higher the supercritical temperature, the stronger the association interaction. The higher the supercritical density, the weaker the association interaction. With the increase of supercritical temperature, both the hydration factor and hydration number of Na+ and Cl- decrease.

Abstract:Sodium is one of the best examples of a free-electron-like metal and of a certain technological interest. However, an unambiguous determination of the structural evolution of sodium clusters is challenging. Here, we performed an unbiased structure search among neutral and anionic sodium clusters in the medium size range of 10-25 atoms, using the Crystal structure AnaLYsis by Particle Swarm Optimization (CALYPSO) method. Geometries are determined by CALYPSO structure searches, followed by reoptimization of a large number of candidate structures. For most cluster sizes the simulated photoelectron spectra of the lowest-energy structures are in excellent agreement with the experimental data, indicating that the current ground-state structures are the true minima. The equilibrium geometries show that, for both neutral and anionic species, the structural evolution from bilayer structures to layered outsides with interior atoms occurs at n = 16. A novel unprecedented honeycomb-like structure of Na20 cluster with C3 symmetry is uncovered, which is more stable than the prior suggested structure based on pentagonal structural motifs.

Abstract:We present an optimum metallic-bond scheme to study the geometric structures of sodium clusters Nan(n⩽15) systematically by combining the characteristics of metallic bonds and the first principle molecular dynamics simulation. The scheme provides an optimum way to examine almost all stable structures of sodium clusters and to determine their ground state structures. It is interesting to note that for the larger sodium clusters (13⩽n⩽15), there are some plane-like substructures on their surfaces, which resemble the fragments of the (110) plane with the highest atomic area density in the bulk bcc sodium crystal. We also propose a possible way to understand the formation of large icosahedral sodium clusters (1500<n<22000).

Abstract:Model systems of sodium iodide dissolved in dimethyl ether or 1,2-dimethoxyethane (glyme) were studied in order to investigate the structural and dynamic properties of ionic solutions in small and polymeric ethers. Full molecular dynamics simulations were performed at a range of different salt concentrations. An algorithm was designed which assigns ions to clusters and then calculates all the terms which contribute to ionic conductivity. In dilute solutions, free ions are the most common ionic species, followed by ion pairs. As the concentration increases, pairs become the most common species, with significant concentrations of clusters with 3 through 6 ions. Changing the solvent from dimethyl ether to glyme significantly decreases the ion clustering due to the chelate effect in which the two oxygens on a solvent stabilize an associated cation. The conductivity in stable systems is shown to be primarily the result of the movement of free ions and the relative movement of ions within neutral pairs. The Nernst-Einstein relation, commonly used in the discussion of polymer electrolytes, is shown to be inadequate to quantitatively describe conductivity in the model systems.

Abstract:In recent experiments on sodium chloride clusters, structural transitions between nanocrystals with different cuboidal shapes were detected. Here we determine reaction pathways between the low-energy isomers of one of these clusters, (NaCl)35Cl-. The key process in these structural transitions is a highly cooperative rearrangement in which two parts of the nanocrystal slip past one another on a {110} plane in a 〈11¯0〉 direction. In this way the nanocrystals can plastically deform, in contrast to the brittle behavior of bulk sodium chloride crystals at the same temperatures; the nanocrystals have mechanical properties which are a unique feature of their finite size. We also report and compare the global potential-energy minima for (NaCl)NCl- using two empirical potentials, and comment on the effect of polarization.

Abstract:The non-equilibrium melting of Na crystals at high heating rates and the evolutions of the atomic clusters are studied by the MD method and PTM analysis. Results show that as the heating rate rises from 1 × 10 11 K/s to 2 × 10 13 K/s, the non-equilibrium melting temperature of Na increases non-linearly from 417 K to 480 K, the melting temperature difference experienced increases from 7 K to 27 K, while the melting time decreases from 70 ps to 1 ps. Through the PTM analysis, it is found that some BCC clusters transform into the disordered Other clusters through intermediate HCP and FCC clusters with increasing temperature, and the BCC cluster's reduction rate and the Other cluster's growth rate are getting slower with increasing heating rate. There is a good correspondence between the evolutions of the atomic clusters, the changes of macroscopic physical parameters, and the peaks and valleys of RDF with temperature.

Abstract:Based on nanoarchitectonics and molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the structural properties and diffusion pathway of Na atoms in sodium trisilicate over a wide temperature range. The structural and dynamics properties are analyzed through the radial distribution function (RDF), the Voronoi Si- and O-polyhedrons, the cluster function fCL(r), and the sets of fastest (SFA) and slowest atoms (SSA). The results indicate that Na atoms are not placed in Si-polyhedrons and bridging oxygen (BO) polyhedrons; instead, Na atoms are mainly placed in non-bridging oxygen (NBO) polyhedrons and free oxygen (FO) polyhedrons. Here BO, NBO, and FO represent O bonded with two, one, and no Si atoms, respectively. The simulation shows that O atoms in sodium trisilicate undergo numerous transformations: NBF0 ↔ NBF1, NBF1 ↔ NBF2, and BO0 ↔ BO1, where NBF is NBO or FO. The dynamics in sodium trisilicate are mainly distributed by the hopping and cooperative motion of Na atoms. We suppose that the diffusion pathway of Na atoms is realized via hopping Na atoms alone in BO-polyhedrons and the cooperative motion of a group of Na atoms in NBO- and FO-polyhedrons.

Abstract:Zn-based chloride molten salts have been candidate heat transfer and storage media in solar thermal power attributed to excellent thermal properties and high thermal stability, while associated thermal properties at high temperature are still insufficient in research. In this work, microstructure and thermal properties of NaCl-ZnCl2 molten salt have been investigated by molecular dynamics simulation based on Born-Mayer-Huggins potential and experimental measurement. Encouragingly, the trends of all properties from simulation are consistent with experimental data, and the errors are 6.97% in density and 7.42% in specific heat, respectively. As temperature increases, the distance between ion clusters centers on cations increases and the internal of ion clusters shrinks, thus density and viscosity decrease with the whole structure of NaCl-ZnCl2 becoming looser, and thermal conductivity decreases because smaller Zn-Cl distance in [ZnCln] structure causes shorter phonon mean free path and larger thermal resistance. As content of ZnCl2 decreases, density, specific heat capacity and viscosity decrease with the whole structure becoming looser, but thermal conductivity increases due to larger Zn-Cl distance. Besides, the correlation equations for properties-temperature-composition of NaCl-ZnCl2 (0-100 mol. % ZnCl2, 578 K-1073 K) have been further identified for its utilization in advanced thermal storage systems.
Powerful predictability of FPMD simulations for the phase transition behavior of NaCl-MgCl2 eutectic salt

Abstract:First principle molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations in combination with experimental measurements are applied to investigate the phase transition behavior of NaCl-MgCl2 eutectic salt from 823 to 573 K. First, the essential phase transition indexes of thermal expansion coefficient, density, melting point, and enthalpy of fusion for NaCl-MgCl2 eutectic obtained by simulations and experiments are in good agreement with each other. Second, the micro-structural characteristics during phase transition are depicted by the temperature dependences of angular distribution function, radial distribution function and coordination number. The structural evolution of NaCl-MgCl2 eutectic is illustrated from the rearrangement of polyhedral <math>MgCln2-n</math> clusters, and it is founded that high and low temperature are conducive to the formation of 4-fold and 6-fold coordinated structure, respectively. Third, the ionic self-diffusion coefficients for NaCl-MgCl2 eutectic are predicted and concluded that Mg2+ behaves like a complex than as a free ion resulting in less diffusivity. Therefore, the shear viscosities of molten NaCl-MgCl2 as well as the corresponding pre-exponential factor and activation energy are evaluated considering the solvodynamic mean radius of all the diffusive particles. Ultimately, two figures of merit for molten NaCl-MgCl2 are deduced to evaluate the heat-transfer and heat-loss performance by integrating multiple thermal properties including density, viscosity, specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity. Overall, these simulation results are in satisfactory agreement with available reference data, indicating that the FPMD simulations work extremely well in predicting the thermophysical and structural properties of NaCl-MgCl2, which also provide insights for the applications of binary chloride salts in thermal energy storage.
