Abstract:Hybrid FRP-concrete-steel double-skin tubular colums are a new form of hybrid members recently proposed by the first author. The new column consists of an outer tube made of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) and an inner tube made of steel, with the space between filled with concrete. In this new hybrid column, the three constituent materials are optimally combined to achieve several advantages not available with existing columns. In this paper, the section forms of the new column are first introduced. Results from axial compression tests and four-point bending tests are next presented to demonstrate some of the expected advantages. These test results confirm that the concrete in the new column is very effectively confined by the two tubes, leading to a very ductile response. Based on the stress-strain curves from the axial compression tests, a section analysis for the bending tests is descibed and is shown to predict the test results reasonably closely.

Abstract:This paper presents a study to introduce and experimentally validate an innovative concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) column system, named as confined CFT or CCFT, for improved seismic design of steel and concrete composite structures. Based on fundamental mechanics, the concept is aimed at controlling the focal buckling of the steel tube and confining the concrete in the potential plastic hinge regions of a CFT column. To achieve this, several efficient details of transverse confinement are proposed. In the first phase of the study, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic as additional confinement of CCFT columns was examined through experimental testing. As demonstrated from the results of axial compression tests and seismic loading tests, the new type of CFT column system can provide excellent seismic performance. The complicated local buckling and confinement mechanisms were examined using a proposed simple analytical model.

Abstract:This paper studied an innovative concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) column system originally proposed by Xiao et al. The new CFT system, named as confined CFT or CCFT, was developed for improving seismic design of steel and concrete composite structures. The design concept is based on fundamental mechanics, aimed at controlling the local buckling of the steel tube and confining the concrete in the potential plastic hinge regions of a CFT column. To achieve this, several efficient details of transverse confinement including carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), steel collar and reinforced concrete (RC) cover were proposed and utilized as additional confinement for CCFT columns, and the results of simulated seismic loading tests validated that the new type of CFT column system can provide excellent seismic performance. The concept of CCFT is most suitable for the CFT columns or CFT arches which have high demand for load carrying capacity and ductility, and is also suitable for retrofitting or repairing existing CFT structures.

Abstract:Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) structures have several structural and constructional benefits, which are widely recognized and have led to an increased use in modern engineerings. A brief introduction to application and research on concrete-filled steel tubes are introduced in this paper, several key issues on designing CFST structures are presented, including members subjected to static loading and long-term loading; seismic behaviours; fire resistence design and damage evaluation after exposure to fire, pre-stress effect in steel tubes and concrete compaction effect. Some new types CFST members, such as CFSTs with thin-walled steel tubes or high-performance concrete used, concrete-filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) as well as FRP-confined CFST members and etc. are introduced. Finally, some recent reseach developments on CFST column-to-beam connections, frames and hybrid structures using CFST members are generally described in this paper.

Abstract:In recent years, the use of steel tube confined concrete (STCC) columns has been the interests of many structural engineers. The present study is an attempt to study the monotonic and cyclic behaviours of STCC columns. For the monotonic behaviours, a series of tests on STCC stub columns (twenty one), and beam-columns (twenty) were carried out. The main parameters varied in the tests are: (1) column section types, circular and square; (2) tube diameter (or width) to thickness ratio, from 40 to 162, and (3) load eccentricity ratio (e/r), from 0 to 0.5. For the cyclic behaviours, the test parameters included the sectional types and the axial load level (n). Twelve STCC column specimens, including 6 specimens with circular sections and 6 specimens with square sections were tested under constant axial load and cyclically increasing flexural loading. Comparisons are made with predicted column strengths and flexural stiffness using the existing codes. It was found that STCC columns exhibit very high levels of energy dissipation and ductility, particularly when subjected to high axial loads. Generally, the energy dissipation ability of the columns with circular sections was much higher than those of the specimens with square sections. Comparisons are made with predicted column strengths and flexural stiffness using the existing codes such as AIJ-1997, AISC-LRFD-1994, BS5400-1979 and EC4-1994.

Abstract:Concrete-filled steel tubular(CFST) columns can be used as main load bearing members or temporary supports for other members during construction.This paper introduces the difficulties and characteristics of underground structure and the construction process of CFST columns.The key construction technologies are illustrated from the aspects of fabrication and erection of hollow steel tube,reinforcing the column base and concrete pouring.Preliminary discussions are performed regarding the influence of initial stress in steel tube and concrete pouring on CFST members and the structure.The result provides reference for the selection of rational construction technology for CFST columns in underground engineering.

Abstract:Concrete-filled special-shaped (L-shaped, T-shaped, and cross-shaped, and etc.) steel tube column is a type of member in which concrete is poured into special-shaped steel tube so that steel and concrete support loads together. It improves the seismic behaviors of reinforced concrete special-shaped columns due to the better confining effects provided by the steel tube. A test research on the seismic behaviors of one concrete-filled T-shaped steel tube column with pseudo static method is presented and the load-displacement curve and skeleton curve are provided. Series of steel bar stiffeners were welded onto the steel tube in order to postpone the buckling of steel tube and to enhance confining effects. A numerical analysis program was developed using a fiber-based method. The constitutive model of concrete employed the modified Mander model, and that of steel employed a bi-linear model considering the Bausinger effect. The numerical analysis program was verified by the test results and parametric analysis was carried out, in which the influences of the ratio of axial compression stress to strength, steel tube thickness and concrete strength were mainly discussed. The following conclusions are obtained: with the increase of the ratio of axial compression stress to strength, the bearing capacity of member increases and the energy dissipation capacity improve, while the ductility deteriorates. With the increase of steel tube thickness, the initial rigidity, bearing capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity improves simultaneously. With the increase of concrete strength, the bearing capacity increases, the energy dissipation capacity improves, while the ductility deteriorates.
Behavior of square steel tubular columns during concrete pouring

Abstract:The mechanical behavior and safety of the hollow steel tubes used in the concrete-filled steel tube(CFST) method is critical during the core concrete pour.A finite element model was developed based on typical experiments on full-scale square hollow steel section columns during concrete pouring.Measured hydrostatic pressures and strains in the hollow steel tube were used to verify the numerical results.The deformations and stresses in the hollow steel tube were then analyzed for different concrete pouring heights and width to thickness ratios.The results show that the inner ring plate effectively reduces the stresses and deformations in the tube.The stresses and deformations in the tube were greater for steel tubes with larger width to thickness ratios.This numerical model can be used for further research on the construction mechanics of CFST structures.

Abstract:Six square steel tube-encased concrete (SC) columns confined by bolted circular thin steel tube were fabricated and tested under cyclical reversed lateral load to investigate their structural behavior. The primary experimental variables included the axial load ratio, the grade of the encased square steel tubes (FB rank and FC rank), the infilling of concrete into the encased steel tube, and the thickness of outer circular bolted thin steel tubes. Experimental results revealed that confinement by the bolted circular thin steel tube with outer-diameter-to-thickness ratio of 189 could ensure sufficient ductility to the SC columns, and the bolted thin steel tube did not rupture until the drift angle of about 0.09 rad. Furthermore, a simple evaluation method for the ultimate flexural strength of SC column section was proposed along with a numerical analytical method to predict the overall behavior of SC columns. The proposed methods can take the confinement effect by the bolted circular steel tube into consideration. Fairly good agreement between the experimental results and the calculated ones verified the reliability and accuracy of the proposed methods.

Abstract:Steel tube concrete refers to a composite structure formed by filling concrete in a steel tube, and the steel tube and its core concrete can jointly bear external loads. The seismic performance of composite structures largely depends on the strength and ductility of the columns. In the structure, columns are the main vertical load-bearing components due to their high strength and good ductility. However, under seismic action, steel tube concrete columns may experience end steel tube wall buckling, and the concrete inside the pipes may be crushed and lose its load-bearing capacity, causing the overall structure to collapse. In order to better utilize the performance of steel tube concrete, this study analyzes the research of scholars and explores the axial compression performance, failure modes, and local buckling effects of different types of concrete filled in steel tubes on the structural performance of steel tube concrete. Therefore, it is particularly important to study the axial compression performance of steel-concrete columns and explore reasonable design methods to delay the local buckling of steel pipes, and accurately evaluate the seismic performance of steel-concrete columns under large earthquake responses.

Abstract:In recent years, the utilization of high performance concrete has been the interests of the structural engineers and researchers. As a high performance concrete, self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is a highly flowable concrete that can fill formwork without any mechanical vibration. SCC's unique property gives it significant economic, constructability and engineering advantages. The aim of this paper is thus an attempt to study the possibility of using thin-walled hollow structural steel (HSS) columns filled with very high strength SCC. Tests on 28 HSS columns filled with very high strength SCC were conducted, where the main parameters varied are: (1) section types, circular and square; (2) slenderness ratio, from 12 to 120; and (3) load eccentricity ratio, from 0 to 0.6. Comparisons are made with predicted column strengths using the existing codes such as AISC, EC4 and DBJ13-51-2003.

Abstract:Concrete filled steel tubular columns of non-circular section is much less ductile than their circular counterparts, particularly when high-strength concrete and thin/high strength steel tubes are used, which is a major concern fir structures designed to resist seismic loading. This paper presents the details of a new form of concrete-filled steel tubular columns recently proposed to address this problem and the rationale behind the new form; it also presents the first series of axial compression tests on such columns of square cross-section to demonstrate their advantages. These columns consist of a steel tube filled with concrete that is confined with high strength steel spirals typically with a yield stress exceeding 1000 MPa. The test results showed that the new form of columns, referred to as confined concrete-filled steel tubular (CCFST) columns, possesses much greater ductility than those without internal confinement as a result of the use of only a small amount of high strength steel as confining spirals.

The general response of concrete-filled steel tubular columns is discussed with an emphasis on the composite action between the steel tube and its concrete core. The engineering practices of concrete filled steel tubes in industrial works, structural frames and supports, loading bridges, compressive members of truss, subway columns, electricity transmitting poles, spacious construction, high-rise or super high-rise buildings and bridge structures are introduced. Abstract:Using steel slag, a waste by-product in the steel industry to replace natural aggregates to produce concrete can offer a sustainable solution in mitigating the environmental problems due to huge depletion of natural aggregates and disposal of abundant slag. Extensive research studies revealed that steel slag concrete has superior strength and stiffness but may also cause unsoundness to concrete. To solve the problem, steel slag concrete-filled-steel-tube (SSCFST) column was proposed, in which the concrete's expansion would activate larger confining stress, and thereby enhancing the overall behaviour of the column. A total of 18 traditional concrete-filled-steel-tube (CFST) and SSCFST column specimens with and without external confinement were prepared and tested under uni-axial compression. The major testing parameters were the steel tube diameter to thickness ratio, steel slag coarse/fine aggregate replacement ratio and spacing of external confinement. Results revealed that by replacing 50% natural coarse aggregate with steel slag coarse aggregate or 50% natural fine aggregate with steel slag fine aggregate, the compressive strength of steel slag concrete increased but the flowability decreased. Besides, SSCFST columns showed superior mechanical behaviour than traditional CFST columns. With external confinement, the strength and stiffness were further improved. Lastly, a load–strain model developed previously by the authors was adopted to predict the mechanical behaviour of traditional CFST and SSCFST columns. Good agreement has been obtained between predicted and experimental results for traditional CFST column while for SSCFST columns, the model under-estimated the axial load and over-estimated the absolute hoop strain at a given axial strain attributed to the change in the packing structure and possible expansion of steel slag concrete.

Abstract:Steel tube confined reinforced concrete (STCRC) columns are usually used as key structural elements in long-span and high-rise structures with high load resistance and outstanding seismic behaviour. To date, no investigation has been conducted on the long-term behaviour of slender STCRC columns. In this context, the long-term tests on axially loaded slender STCRC columns were firstly presented with various slenderness ratios and grades of concrete. The distributions of the tube's circumferential and vertical stresses along the length of the column were carefully monitored throughout the tests to investigate the time-dependent tube stiffness contribution and their coupling effects with the confining pressure. By considering these two factors, a reliable analysis method was proposed and validated by the available test results. It was shown that, within the test parameters in this paper, the steel tube can contribute up to 12.6 % of axial stiffness of the composite columns, which is different from that predicted based on plane section assumption. The tube stiffness contribution increased with time and was more pronounced in columns with higher slenderness ratio or lower concrete strength. The coupling effects between the vertical stress and the confining pressure were not negligible for slender STCRC columns. The proposed method showed good accuracy in predicting long-term responses with errors less than +6.4 % and −2.9 %.
