Abstract:Displacement-based seismic design method of concrete filled square tubular columns has been researched in this paper. The key problems such as equivalent stiffness and damping ratio, the detail design procedure of CFT columns and the main factors related with CET columns are summarized. Results show that stiffness of the second stage has little effect to hysteretic damping ratio.The thickness of steel tube and the displacement ductility of the CFT columns are both increased as increasing axial loading ratio, the thickness of steel tube and yield moment are both decreased as increasing the section dimension of the CFT columns.

Abstract:This paper introduces an innovative concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column structure for improved anti-seismic design of steel-concrete composite structures. Based on fundamental mechanics, the design concept is aimed at controlling the local buckling of the steel tube and confining the concrete at the potential plastic hinge regions of a CFST column. To achieve this, several efficient details of transverse confinement will be examined. This type of CFST column is expected to overcome many disadvantages of the conventional CFST column and provide the ideal choice for structural design of tall buildings, particularly for seismic regions.

Abstract:The failure of conventional concrete filled tubes (CFT) under seismic loading is typically governed by the inelastic buckling and low cycle fatigue rupture. The second author has proposed to use additional confinement to control or delay the inelastic buckling of the steel tube at the potential plastic hinge zones of CFT members. Following the success of the previous studies on confined concrete filled tubes (CCFT) with circular sections, this paper reports the experimental results on square CCFT columns. One conventional CFT and five CCFT model columns were tested under constant axial load and cyclic lateral forces. Test results validated the concept of CCFT for square sections. Compared with the conventional CFT column model, the CCFT columns exhibited significantly improved seismic performance with large ductility. A design method for the additional confinement to the plastic hinge region was also developed and validated.

Abstract:In view of the decreasing trend of column widths in steel residential buildings, a new type of concrete filled rectangular steel tubular column-H-section steel beam connections with external stiffeners is proposed. The diaphragm is removed in this connection. Pseudo-static tests of seven new joint specimens were carried out. The test parameters were the section of the steel beam and the thickness and the height of the long side of the external stiffeners. The failure modes, hysteretic curves, skeleton curves, strength, stiffness degradation, strength degradation, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the joints were studied. The test results show that there were three failure modes of this new joint, namely, tensile failure of beam flange, weld failure between beam flange and external stiffener, and column wall failure near the external stiffener. The ductility coefficient was 2.17 to 3.67, the equivalent viscous damping coefficient was 0.2 to 0.3, and the average drift ratio was 1/49. The seismic performance of the joint met the requirements of strong joints and weak members. Increasing the thickness or the height of the long side of the external stiffeners can increase the strengths of the joints. The premature cracking of the beam flange, the welding seam between beam flange and external stiffener, or the column wall will reduce the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the joints. It is proposed that the connection coefficient should be 1.4 when checking the ultimate strength of the column wall and joint weld. The strengthening or weakening measures on the flange at the beam ends can be taken to ensure that the new joints have a sufficient plastic deformation capacity.

Abstract:The concrete-filled wide rectangular steel tube (CFWRST) columns, with the aspect ratio of cross-section greater than 2.0, have attracted much attention in practice. Existing studies on the concrete-filled rectangular steel tube (CFRST) members have shown that the aspect ratio of cross-section is a main parameter controlling their be-haviors under various loads, which means that the behaviors of CFWRST columns may be different from the common CFST members (the aspect ratio of cross-section not greater than 2.0) considered in existing studies. The behaviors of CFWRST columns under the combined constant axial compression and cyclic lateral loadings were investigated in this paper. Six full-scale columns were tested, with which the failure modes, hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, ductility, lateral stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens were analyzed and discussed in detail. For all tested specimens, the ductility indexes are between 2.028 and 3.433, and the equivalent damping ratios usually exceed 0.3 at the last of loading cycle. The finite element model was also developed and validated using the test results, and the parametric analyses were carried out with the influences of main parameters discussed. Furthermore, comparisons between the predictions of the solution of EC4 for CFST beam-columns and test results show that the solution of EC4 can provide safe predictions for the CFWRST col-umns under constant axial compression and cyclic lateral loading.

Abstract:This article presents a literature review of existing research on the strong column–weak beam design philosophy, which has been widely adopted in the seismic design of frame structures. A comprehensive review of this design philosophy, including its concept and research history, especially factors affecting the accurate calculation of the flexural capacity of beams [Formula: see text] and the determination of the column-to-beam flexural strength ratio [Formula: see text], is presented first. The development of design provisions of four representative countries for this design philosophy is also reviewed. The implementation of strong column–weak beam hierarchy in real structural design is then discussed, and existing problems are pointed out. Finally, different techniques for the seismic retrofit of existing reinforced concrete frames are reviewed.

Seismic Behaviors of High-Strength Bolted End-Plate Connected Composite Steel Beam and Square Concrete Filled Steel Tube Column Frames

Abstract:Utilizing sub-structure methodology,pseudo-dynamic tests, a quasi-static test and a static pushover test were conducted on a two-story and one and a half bay frame, with composite steel beams and concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns connected by high-strength bolts and end plates. The 4∶ 7 scale sub-assemblage frame simulated a portion of a 10 stories and 3 spans plane frame. Seismic performance of the CFT composite frame including failure pattern, displacement response, hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capability were investigated. During pseudo-dynamic test, the stiffness of tested frame had little degradation for frequent occurrence earthquake, and the stiffness dropped by about 13% for design basis earthquake, and the stiffness reduced 20% however the story drift ratio was less than 2.0% for maximum considered earthquake. Initial local buckling at beam and first story column ends was detected after the story drift ratio exceeding 1.6% during pseudo-static test, while no global strength degradation occurred. Even when the story drift ratio exceeding 6.0% during pushover test, the frame could still develop sufficient lateral loading capacity. The high-strength bolted end-plate connections satisfied the requirements of aseismic design and were suggested to be designed as rigid connections within the drift limitation of related code. It is validated that the moment resistant frame with steel beams bolted to CFT columns can provide excellent seismic behaviors and has the potential to be utilized in buildings in earthquake regions.

Abstract:A fused steel diagrid frame (FSDF) is an innovative earthquake resilient structural system. FSDF combines the steel diagrid structural system with shear links (SLs) and moment connections (MCs) to dissipate earthquake energy. SLs are placed between diamond-shaped grid units and serve as the primary seismic force-resisting system (SFRS). MCs provide the additional resistance as the secondary SFRS. To facilitate the design of the proposed FSDF system, a performance-based equivalent energy design procedure (EEDP) is utilized to design a prototype building. EEDP allows designers to select multiple performance objectives under different earthquake hazard intensities. A detailed finite element model is developed to simulate the nonlinear dynamic response of the structure under earthquake shaking intensities. The results of nonlinear dynamic analyses show that the FSDF has superior seismic performance and can be efficiently designed using EEDP. Lastly, detailed collapse risk assessment of the prototype building utilizing the FSDF is conducted using the Federal Emergency Management Agency FEMA P695 (2009) methodology. The result shows that the EEDP-designed FSDF has superior margin against collapse.

Abstract:This paper studied an innovative concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) column system originally proposed by Xiao et al. The new CFT system, named as confined CFT or CCFT, was developed for improving seismic design of steel and concrete composite structures. The design concept is based on fundamental mechanics, aimed at controlling the local buckling of the steel tube and confining the concrete in the potential plastic hinge regions of a CFT column. To achieve this, several efficient details of transverse confinement including carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), steel collar and reinforced concrete (RC) cover were proposed and utilized as additional confinement for CCFT columns, and the results of simulated seismic loading tests validated that the new type of CFT column system can provide excellent seismic performance. The concept of CCFT is most suitable for the CFT columns or CFT arches which have high demand for load carrying capacity and ductility, and is also suitable for retrofitting or repairing existing CFT structures.

Abstract:Multi-cellular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have been widely used in frame structures for seismic resisting purposes. In this paper, the seismic performance of single-story composite frame structures, consisting of T-shaped multi-cellular CFST (TM-CFST) columns connected with steel beams, was investigated. Four specimens of the composite frame structures under constant vertical compressive loads and quasi-static lateral cyclic loads were tested to explore the hysteretic performance. Refined finite element (FE) models were developed to provide a benchmark modeling approach that was able to accurately capture the mechanical behavior of the composite frame structures. The FE analysis results were compared with those measured from tests, showing satisfactory coincidence between the experimental and simulated results. Hence, the validity of the setup in the FE model was verified. Following the validation of the FE modeling approach, a parametric study was conducted, involving the parameters of axial force ratio, beam-to-column linear stiffness ratio, cross-sectional dimensions of columns and width of frame. On this basis, the seismic performance of the composite frames was investigated by analyzing the characteristics including stiffness, strength, ductility, and energy-dissipating abilities. The TMCFST frames are applicable for low- and medium-rise building structures. In practical designs of the TM-CFST frames, the beam-to-column stiffness ratios should be carefully selected to guarantee that the beam reaches full-sectional plasticity before the column at the beam-column joint, fulfilling the requirement of seismic resistant designs.

Abstract:This paper presents the parametric analysis and design method for the concrete-encased hexagonal concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column base under combined compression and biaxial bending . The corresponding experimental and numerical investigations on the seismic performance of the concrete-encased hexagonal CFST column base under combined compression and biaxial bending have been presented in the companion paper (Yang et al., 2023). The finite element model established in the companion paper is used to study the influence of key parameters on the load bearing capacity and the distribution of internal force. These parameters include those of the CFST column, the outer RC, the plate-anchor component, the axial load ratio and shear connectors. A total of six failure modes are identified, including three types of flexural failure and three types of shear failure. The ultimate capacity and ductility of the column base with flexural failure at the bottom or top of the plate are higher than that of other four failure modes, which are determined as the reasonable failure modes for practical application in the design and analysis of concrete-encased column bases. A novel design approach for the concrete-encased CFST column base is introduced. A simplified method is proposed to predict the flexural resistance of the concrete-encased CFST column base, following up with the shear strength calculation of outer RC to determine the stirrup arrangement. Some constructional recommendations are also proposed.

Abstract:Steel corrosion is a critical factor in the seismic performance degradation of prefabricated concrete structures. In this study, the constant current accelerated corrosion method was employed to achieve targeted corrosion levels in steel bars within prefabricated column-footing joints connected by a grouted splice sleeve (GSS). Following that, a quasi-static cyclic experiment and numerical simulation method were employed to investigate the seismic performance of the specimens under various corrosion levels. Seismic performance indicators of specimens including the hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, bearing capacity, ductility coefficient, stiffness, and cumulative energy dissipation are examined. The results demonstrate that the failure modes of all column-footing joints are flexural failures. Specimens with steel bar corrosion levels below 14.1 % show negligible impact on the seismic performance. However, as the corrosion level increases, both the bearing capacity and cumulative energy dissipation capacity of the specimens significantly decrease. The horizontal displacement and ultimate displacement corresponding to the maximum bearing capacity are only 50.5 % and 45.2 %, respectively, compared to the noncorroded specimen. Additionally, a refined finite element model of prefabricated columnfooting joints with GSS connections under different corrosion levels is developed and the hysteresis and skeleton curves obtained by numerical simulation are verified to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The numerical simulation outcomes regarding peak load and corresponding horizontal displacement maintain a relative error within 15 % compared to the experimental results.

Abstract:The concrete-encased concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns are usually connected to steel beams in structures. In this study, a total of nine different connection details are proposed for the steel beam to concrete-encased CFST column composite joints, and their structural behavior under seismic loading was evaluated experimentally. The failure patterns, the hysteretic load-displacement relations, moment-curvature relations and the strain responses of these joints were recorded and compared. It was found that joints with the external diaphragm and through-beam details had the most convenient seismic performance among these joints.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to establish the horizontal displacement angle limit values under different performance level, use damage as the quantitative index of performance level and determine the design principle of the RACFST column for performance-based seismic fortification target based on the damage. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on the seismic performance test of the RACFST column. Findings First, three-level seismic are introduced into the performance design foundation of the RACFST column. Second, the performance level of the RACFST column is divided into five grades: normal use, temporary use, use after repair, life safety and prevention of collapse. Third, the seismic performance targets of RACFST columns are divided into four categories: unacceptable situation, basic performance target, important performance target and special performance target. Originality/value The initial damage of the recycled aggregate occurs in the process of crushing and screening, and the damage evolution and development of the RACFST column occur under cyclic load. This is one of the problems that should not be avoided in the design of the seismic performance of the RACFST column. New levels are introduced in the performance design foundation of the RACFST column.

Abstract:The seismic performance of concrete-encased column base for hexagonal concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns was investigated through finite element analysis (FEA) modeling. A FEA model for the seismic analysis of the column base was first established and verified with test results. The numerical model was subsequently used to study the mechanical behavior of the column base, including the typical failure modes, the load transfer mechanisms, and the interaction among components and the internal force distribution. Finally, a parametric study was carried out to investigate the effect of salient parameters on the behavior of the column base. It was found that the parameters of the outer RC component, as well as the axial load level, have significant effects on the seismic behavior of the column base, while the effects of the parameters of the CFST column and the base plate connection were moderate within the investigated parameter range. In addition, the accuracy of a simplified strength model for the column base proposed by the authors was verified with the FEA model.

Abstract:This paper presents the seismic behaviour of concrete-encased hexagonal concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column base under combined compression and biaxial bending . A total of 12 column base specimens are tested in terms of failure modes, load-displacement relationship, strain distribution, strength and stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity. The main parameters include the height of the outer reinforced concrete component, the loading angle of lateral load , the axial load ratio, the cross section of the CFST column and the base type. A finite element model is established, validated, and used to study the distribution of internal force. The effects of some key parameters on the internal force distribution of column base are studied, including the second-order torsion, the loading angle, the loading path of the lateral load and the sustained load. Three types of flexural failure modes are identified in both experimental and numerical investigations. The outer RC component as well as the axial load ratio have a significant influence on the failure mode of the column base. The concrete-encased column base tends to fail at the top section of the base plate with a higher axial load level. The outer reinforced concrete not only resists external load with the CFST column and plate-anchor component together, but also improves the strength and ductility of the CFST column.

Abstract:This study proposes a form of concrete-filled steel tube column with a multiple-chamber round-ended cross-section (M-CFST). Longitudinal and transverse stiffening ribs divide the circular-ended section into different chambers, strengthening the steel tube's confinement effect on the core concrete and improving the component's seismic performance. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) solid model of the M-CFST is created by employing the FE software ABAQUS. Quasi-static analysis is conducted to investigate the influence of parameters, such as chamber arrangement, aspect ratio, and axial compression ratio, on flexural hysteresis performance. Moreover, the failure modes, hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, strain development, and energy dissipation of the components are analyzed. The results show the following: (1) The FE model presented in this study can simulate the quasi-static behavior of CFST columns accurately, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the measured values. (2) The seismic performance of the composite column is excellent, with a large number of chambers leading to a robust hysteresis curve for the composite columns, resulting in increased bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity. However, the energy dissipation performance of the specimen with a two-chamber arrangement is slightly lower than that with a single-chamber arrangement. (3) The results of the finite element analysis suggest that the long and short sides of the CFST columns with a large length–width ratio should be arranged to be relatively close in length.
