Abstract:Molten carbonate fuel cells have been revealed to be very attractive power generation system, promising highly efficient electricity generation and very low environmental impact. The integration of micro gas turbine and molten carbonate fuel cells has been proposed in the last years as an extremely efficient solution for power generation. In this paper, we present two typical MCFC/MGT hybrid systems (the bottoming cycle and the topping cycle), respectively. They are based on the existing 50kW MCFC Stack and one micro gas turbine system. A simulation technique is applied. Steady-state thermodynanirc energy and exergetic models for MCFC/MGT hybrid power systems are developed on the IPSEpro simulation platform, and applied to the design and off-design performance analysis of energy and exergy. The exergy method highlights irreversibility within the system components, and it is of particular interest in this paper. The energy and exergy analysis has been carried out along with the performance assessment. Full analysis of the energy and exergy at each component of the system is conducted such as fuel cells, oxidizer, gas turbine, compressor and so on. Their respective values are normalized by the lower heating value (LHV) of the fuel and its chemical exergy, respectively. Thus, the normalized electrical energy outputs indicate the first and second law efficiencies, respectively, of the MCFC/MGT hybrid systems. The coupling of MGT with MCFC has shown a potential for an exergy efficiency of plant over 55%(the bottoming cycle) and ovsr 57% (the topping cycle) at design point. The results show that the hybrid power systems have very good off-design performance. At part load condition, the exergy efficiency of plant changed veiy little. It remains over 55%(the bottoming cycle) and over 56%(the topping cycle). This is very important to the distributed generation systems.
