Abstract:With the deepening exploration of space by humans,traditional radio frequency(RF)communication increasingly fails to meet the demands of high-speed deep space communication.Various spacefaring nations have undertaken research on deep space optical communication technology.Optical communication is a crucial means of achieving space communication.Compared to traditional RF communication,optical communication offers advantages such as high communication speed,small terminal payload,strong anti-interference capabilities and so on,making it more suitable for ultra-long-distance deep space communication.Currently,the United States leads in research and has successfully conducted two deep space optical communication demonstrations.This paper provides a comprehensive review of existing research plans and demonstration results in deep space optical communication.It analyzes the key technologies for implementing deep space optical communication,reflects on the developmental history,and contemplates the future prospects of deep space optical communication.

Abstract:An overview of research activities in China on the following optical communications devices is presented: quantum-well semiconductor lasers; distributed feedback laser diodes; wideband, tunable, narrow-linewidth, external-cavity laser diodes, semiconductor and doped-fiber amplifiers; laser-diode-pumped solid state and single-crystal fiber lasers; doped fiber ring lasers, optical modulators; switches; bistable devices; experimental wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) systems; and time-division photonic switching systems. The most important of these technologies are highlighted with respect to demonstrated achievements in China. The potential uses of these technologies in future telecommunications systems are discussed.<>

Abstract:In the past decade, China has made great investments in studying photonics and photocommunication with larger communication capacity, better performance, and lower cost. After years of heavy investment, great progress has been made in academic research, manufacturing capabilities, and optical network scale. The number of papers written and published by researchers in China in the world's top optical fiber communication conferences has increased year by year, accounting for about 10% of the total number of papers. These high-level articles show that scientists in China have made great strides in photonics research in devices, systems, and networks. On the other hand, photonics industrialization in China is getting more competitive with its large market scale and strong production capacity.

Abstract:The research progress in nano optoelectronic devices and their integration at Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics are summarized. Integrations on different material platforms are described, but emphasis is given to new micro/nano scale emitters, detectors, and light beam controlling devices. Abstract:The increasing demand for high-speed, large capacity data transmission between the earth and satellites may be solved by optical communications today. Otherwise, the satellite-to-earth communication will be constrained by the transmission bottleneck. Relevant researches have been done and resultfull achievements have been obtained, such as the Optical Communication Demonstration System, Optical Demonstration and High-speed Link Devices, STRV-2 Experiment, Geosynchronous Lightweight Technology Experiment (GeoLITE), and Mars Laser Communication Demonstration System (MLCD) developed by the US, as well as the laser communication experimental devices developed by Japan. Researches have also been conducted in China in the areas of Acquisition, Pointing and Tacking (APT), optical phased array and new types of satellite-to-earth communications. There are many problems that are expected to be solved in the future, such as how to improve APT performance, how to overcome the effect of space atmosphere, how to raise the data rate to Gigabit per second with low bit error rate, and how to link the satellite and earth optical networks.

Abstract:10Gb/s optical internet network (NSFCnet) in china with protection switching function and performance monitoring is introduced in this paper. 16 X 10Gb/s Transmission is demonstrated over 400km SMF with 3 network elements consisting of multiplxers and demultiplxers. The power penalties for all 16 channels are measured to be less than 2dB (@BER=10(-10)).

Abstract:In nonlinear optical systems, the optical superposition principle breaks down. The system’s response (including electric polarization, current density, etc) is not proportional to the stimulus it receives. Over the past half century, nonlinear optics has grown from an individual frequency doubling experiment into a broad academic field. The nonlinear optics has not only brought new physics and phenomena, but also has become an enabling technology for numerous areas that are vital to our lives, such as communications, health, advanced manufacturing, et al . This Roadmap surveys some of the recent emerging fields of the nonlinear optics, with a special attention to studies in China. Each section provides an overview of the current and future challenges within a part of the field, highlighting the most exciting opportunities for future research and developments.

Abstract:The Information Optoelectronic Technology Research Institute (IOTRI) in Tsinghua University brings together research activities and research projects in various optoelectronic devices, integrated photonic devices, optical fiber telecommunication and networks, optical display, optical storage and optical fiber sensing systems. The researches on the optical components for the all optical networks are executed in the area of Fiber Bragg Grating, Wavelength Converters, Tunable filters, Fiber Amplifiers, DFB+EA integrated light source chips and modules, optical nonlinear macromolecule material and its application, Fiber Amplifiers, etc. and the forecast researches on photonic crystal and nanophotonics are also started. Up to now, about 10 research projects on optical component for all optical networks are kept on going in IOTRI with the projects supports by the government through the National High-tech R&D Program ("863" program), the National Fundamental Research and Development Program (“973” Program), the National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC), Tsinghua 985 Project, Foundation project of Tsinghua University, and some cooperated projects. All these projects cover the following research areas: Fiber Bragg Grating and its application in DWDM systems such as broadband dispersion and dispersion slope compensation, polymer optical waveguide and its applications, photonic crystal's theoretical analysis and design, wide-band dynamic gain equalized FRA+EDFA hybrid module and related components, wavelength converters and its application in optical networks, tunable PMD compensators, Fiber optical parametric amplification, Gain Coupling in high-speed integrated light sources, etc. Some projects are just carried on, and some of them achieved a lot. About 30 papers in the above areas are posted in the last 3 years.

Abstract:In the coming Industry 4.0, there is a long-standing challenge to transfer real-time broadband data (e.g., video monitoring data) among machines. Optical wireless communication (OWC), which can easily carry tens of gigabit/s data, is a promising technology but suffering from non-line-of-sight (NLOS) limitation. In the NLOS scenario, the power of diffused light is heavily attenuated while the diffuse-induced multi-path effect suppresses the band-width of received signals. In this article, the diffuse light reflected off a rough surface (e.g., ceilings or walls) can be focused at a target receiver with an average 18-dB-power-enhancement. A record 40-Gbit/s >80°-coverage beam-steered NLOS OWC system enabled by the proposed diffuse reflection focusing (DRF) is experimentally demonstrated over a diffused 25-cm free-space link. The fast-focusing transmission matrix (TM) algorithm, which takes only 513 iterations to do the focusing, is introduced to make the DRF technique more practical for daily applications. The low-cost intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM-DD) transmission scheme and the simple on-off keying (OOK) signal are selected to support low-cost applications. All these features exhibit its great potential for high-speed indoor wireless communications, especially in the scenarios of Industry 4.0.
