Abstract:All-optical NOR and OR gates using the same setup, based on cross-polarization modulation in a single semiconductor optical amplifier, have been demonstrated experimentally at 10 Gbit/s with two and three input signals. The results show good dynamic extinction ratios of 13.2 and 11.0 dB for NOR and OR outputs, respectively. Abstract:A reconfigurable dual-channel all-optical logic gate is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide for polarization encoding signals. Six logic functions, XNOR, AND, NOR, XOR, AB¯, and A¯B are implemented at two different wavelength channels by adjusting the polarization states of two 10 Gb/s non-return-to-zero polarization-shift keying (NRZ-PolSK) signals modulated by 10-bit on-off keying (OOK) sequences. The eye diagrams of the logic signals are clearly observed, and the logic functions are well demonstrated as the two incident NRZ-PolSK signals are both modulated by the OOK sequences, which originate from 2(31)-1 pseudo-random binary sequences.

Abstract:A novel design of all-optical AND gate is proposed by using cross polarization modulation effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier. In this scheme, an additional continuous-wave beam is not required as that in traditional scheme. AND output is obtained on either of two input signal wavelengths. The AND scheme is numerically simulated and experimentally demonstrated at a bit rate of 10 Gb/s successfully.

Abstract:The authors have proposed and experimentally demonstrated all-optical logic gates using a single SOA and delay interference filtering that enable simultaneous logic functions of OR and NOR at 40 Gbits/s. The proposed scheme, which utilizes the combinative filtering profile of a delay interferometer and an optical bandpass filter, has great merits for use in generating logic outputs with high quality in terms of pulse shape, extinction ratio, and eye diagram. Abstract:All-optical NOR, OR, and AND logic gates are experimentally demonstrated at a bit rate of 100 Gb/s with single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) associated with careful optical filtering. Correct logic results and clear eye openings are achieved by all the logic gates. These three different logic gates are easily reconfigurable by deploying continuous wave light at the input of the SOA and changing the parameters of the filter at the output of the SOA. We also propose an enhanced method of construction for higher quality OR logic gates by deploying and combining blue- and red-shift filtering simultaneously with phase modulation.

Abstract:An ultrafast all-optical logic NOR gate based on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a fiber delay interferometer (FDI) is presented. For high-speed input return-to-zero (RZ) signal, nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) switching windows which satisfy Boolean NOR operation can be formed by properly choosing the delay time and the phase shift of FDI. 40Gb/s NOR operation has been demonstrated successfully with low control optical power. Abstract:An all-optical logic NOR gate operating at 40 Gb/s has been demonstrated using an SOA-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). An optical loop mirror is used as a delayed interferometer to reshape the retum-to-zero (RZ) NOR sequence from the MZI output port. The performance of the NOR operation is numerically analyzed by solving the rate equation of an SOA. An increase in signal output power enhances the Q factor and extinction ratio. Faster SOAs such as quantum-dot SOAs can achieve higher Q value. The demonstrated technique has potential for optical logic operation at ultrahigh speed.

Abstract:Cascaded semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gates using polarization multiplexing technique (PMT) is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. The penalty is smaller than 1 dB after three SOA gates. Experiment shows that four-wave mixing (FWM) will also affect the performance of SOA gates when operated in a multi-channel system.

Abstract:A scheme for realizing all-optical logic AND and NOR gates simultaneously for nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying signals is proposed and demonstrated based on a delayed interferometer and two semiconductor optical amplifiers. Experimental demonstration at 20 Gb/s verifies the logic integrity of this scheme. The final results are derived in the ON-OFF keying format with clear open eyes and extinction ratios over 10 dB. The proposed scheme can be expanded to realize arbitrary logic gate.

Abstract:In this paper, for the first time, we analyze the optical exclusive OR (XOR) gate based on cross-polarization modulation (XPolM) effect in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) using nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) theory. The extinction ratio (ER) of optical XOR gate, which reflects the performance of the gate, is calculated in consideration of the injected current, the length and the polarization angle of input signals of the SOA. The performance of the optical XOR gate can be optimized for some proper parameters of the SOA.

Abstract:In this paper, all optical OR, AND, NOR and NAND gates based on linear photonic crystals (LPhCs) have been numerically designed and simulated by the plane wave expansion (PWE) and finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods. The LPhC fundamental structure with cross-section of 114 μm2 is used for designing the proposed all optical gates (AOGATEs), which is composed of 15 × 23 cubic matrix of dielectric silicon rods in air substrate. The mechanism of the proposed AOGATEs is performed based on phase shift keying (PSK) technique and beam interference effect. Simulation results by FDTD approach illustrate the minimum contrast ratio of 8.88 and 10.31 dB for all optical AND/NOR and OR/NAND logic gates, respectively. Also, the minimum bit rate is obtained as 3.34 Tb/s for AND/NOR and 5 Tb/s for OR/NAND logic gates.

Abstract:Abstract Optical computers, leveraging the advantages of light characteristics, hold the potential to outperform electronic computers significantly. The role of all‐optical logic gates is pivotal in realizing such high‐performance computing systems. This research introduces a streamlined design for an all‐optical NOR logic gate utilizing a semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed gate operates at a remarkable data rate of 40 Gbps, achieving an excellent extinction ratio of 20.285 dB. Notably, the design exhibits very low dispersion (−0.029 × 10 +006 ps/nm) and an impressively low bit error rate of 4.27 × 10 −26 .

Abstract:In the presented structure, the performance of the all-optical XOR logic gate (AO-XOR-LG) is investigated. The XOR-LG is designed and simulated using a photonic crystal semiconductor optical amplifier (PC-SOA) based on Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) nonlinear mechanism. The input optical pulse train used in this simulation is the type of RZ (Return-to-Zero). The finite difference method (FDM) has been used to solve the rate and propagation equations. The effect of input signal energy, bias current, and group refractive index on the output signal and gain of the XOR-LG is studied. The optimal mode is obtained for the XOR-LG with a bit rate of 80 Gbps. Furthermore, for the first time, the effects of quality factor (QF), conversion efficiency (CE), extinction ratio (ER), pattern effect (PE), and gain recovery are simultaneously analyzed in the simulation to increase PC-SOA performance. According to the results, PC-SOA has a more reasonable logic performance than conventional SOA, and due to its much shorter length than SOA, it can be a much better choice for integrated optical circuits.

Abstract:Abstract Semiconductor optical amplifier-based polarization rotation is utilized in designing all-optical AND gate at 100 Gbps. The AND gate shows high extinction ratio (ER ∼ 15 dB), contrast ratio (CR ∼ 18 dB) and quality factor (Q-factor ∼ 16 dB). The effect of the amplified spontaneous emission noise on the performances is also investigated. The AND gate has relative eye opening (REO) varying from 93.52 to 97.1% for 10–30 dB unsaturated gain. Using the AND gate a majority voting gate is designed and analyzed and has Q ∼ 11.7 dB with REO ∼ 91%.

Abstract:The performance of ultra-fast all-optical XOR gate using two types semiconductor optical amplifier-based Mach–Zehnder interferometers (SOA-MZIs) is analyzed. Key parameters are optimized through numerical simulations. With properly designed parameters, 40 Gb/s all-optical XOR gate using SOA-MZI can be realized with fairly high performance. The results are helpful for parameter design of SOA-MZI-based XOR gate.
