Abstract:Single-phase brushless DC motor (SPBLDCM) has always been difficult to accurate computer-aided analysis, design and optimization for the lack of appropriate mathematical model of the motor. However, due to simple structure and high efficiency, it is widely used in low cost applications that require low starting torque. In the paper, a linear steady model of SPBLDCM is developed to predict the performance of the motor. It is suitable for the initial design and optimization of the motor geometry because of its low computational complexity. The optimal commutation advance angles for two different objectives, high electromagnetic power and low current ripple, are also presented based on this linear steady model The performance of the prototype is analyzed by both the developed linear steady model and the dynamic model. Both results agree well. The experimental results also validate the effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:The high torque peaks commonly found in single-phase brushless dc motors can be compressed by different driving methods, which are proposed and studied based on finite-element analysis (FEA). It is concluded that one dead-zone can be added into the driving signals to improve current waveforms and torque envelope. The test results show that the noise level and performances are greatly improved when one proper dead zone is implemented. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:In this paper, a new outer-rotor permanent magnet (PM) brushless DC drive is designed and analyzed. To enable this drive to be applied to electric vehicles, its transient performances at both normal and flux-weakening operations are particularly focused. The distinct feature in design is due to the new motor configuration including the outer-rotor topology, the multipole magnetic circuit and the full slot-pitch coil span arrangement. The distinct feature in analysis is due to the development of the circuit-field-torque coupled time-stepping finite-element method. The proposed PM brushless DC drive is prototyped. The analysis results are verified by experimental measurement.

Abstract:Due to the increasing requirement of high speed motor, bearingless motor has become more and more fascinated to scientists and technicians. Conventionally, two sets of windings are involved for torque and suspension force respectively. Whereas, in this paper, using the concept of multiple control freedom in multiphase motor, an innovative 5-phase bearingless machine with a single set of windings is developed. The principle of the proposed motor is indicated, in which two groups of currents are fed into a single set of winding to generate two interacting magnetic fields, whose pole pair difference is 1. Further more, the analytical model is given. The hardware system and the control strategy applied in the system are demonstrated. In the end, it is certified that the motor could successfully suspended with a radial displacement variation less than 100um.

Abstract:In single-phase brushless DC motors with high magnetic load, the typical asymmetric air-gap structure will lead to high cogging torque peaks, which will distort the torque envelope together with the high current peaks commonly found. To get rid of the high torque ripples, the design of the crucial structural factors for the tapered air-gap structure are analyzed, and different drive methods are evaluated based on the field-circuit coupling calculation. One simple drive method is proposed by adding one proper shut-off zone into the driving voltage. The tests show that the performances are improved and noise level is decreased.

Abstract:High-speed permanent magnet motor is widely used for its excellent performance. With the development of technology, the motor needs be designed to meet more features, such as low torque ripples, low noise, low loss, and so on. This paper focuses on the design of a 500W, 120000rpm high-speed permanent magnet motor, and the torque ripples effected by two pole-slot combinations are analyzed by both the theoretical solution and the finite element analysis with Fourier transformation. It is clarified that because of the different pole pairs and different magnetizations, the electromagnetic torque of 4p6s is smaller than that of 2p3s, while the ripple torque of 4p6s is larger than that of 2p3s. In addition, as the width of the slot opening increasing, the torque ripples of 4p6s are always greater than that of 2p3s.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel dual-stator brushless doubly-fed machine (DSBDFM) with cage-barrier rotor structure for torque density improvement in application of wind power generation. The torque density of electrical machine mainly relates to machine main dimensions and rotor coupling capability (CC). Therefore, optimizing the DSBDFM, especially the machine power distribution and rotor, affects machine torque density and rotor CC. At first, several rotor topologies are proposed and analyzed to strengthen machine CC. Then, design principles and methods in deciding the main dimensions and power distribution for the developed DSBDFM are analyzed and illustrated in detail. Based on the machine structure and design methods, a 50kW DSBDFM is designed, with outer and inner unit electrical machine power distribution, rotor CC, slot-pole combinations, and non-magnetic ring considered. The design example with detailed design procedure in this study provides designers with a practical method in initial estimation of the dimensions and parameters for the designed DSBDFM. Meanwhile, finite element method (FEM) is used to analyze performances of DSBDFM with winding series connection, which are verified by experimental test. Through the results analysis, it is found that the designed DSBDFM satisfies the requirements with desirable performances, indicating the validity and rationality of design methods.

Abstract:A fault-tolerant direct torque control (DTC) strategy for a brushless dc (BLDC) motor with a single sided matrix converter (SSMC) for an electrohydrostatic actuator system in aerospace application is proposed in this paper. The voltage is divided into seven levels, a torque hysteresis control is applied to each phase, voltage of different levels are provided to the motor to control the torque. A Matlab/Simulink model is built and the simulations are carried out. The results verify the fault-tolerant DTC control strategy under fault condition.

Abstract:Conventional bearingless motor has two sets of 3-phase stator windings. The main winding is used to produce torque, while the suspension winding is utilized to produce radial force. This paper proposes a new multiphase bearingless machine with a single set of multiphase windings, taking advantage of the multiple control degrees of freedom in multiphase machine. Two groups of currents are fed to the single set of multiphase windings to produce torque and radial forece. Taking a six phase induction motor for example, the inductance matrices, considering air gap eccentricity, are calculated with the Modified Winding Function Method. The mathematical model of the new bearingless machine is set up, and the radial force analytical model is deduced by virtual displacement. The control algorithm based on rotor flux-orientation of ldquomotor currentsrdquo is presented. Experiment results verified the feasibility of this new bearingless motor.

Abstract:In this paper, the design process of brushless DC (BLDC) motor adopting the dual rotor structure that can reduce the overall size of the motor while generating the same torque as the conventional permanent magnet BLDC motor is analyzed. A simple size is selected by obtaining the torque per rotor volume (TRV), and a method of matching the counter electromotive force by selecting the pole-arc of the magnet through a magnetic equivalent circuit is analyzed. Since the efficiency is low because the 120-degree commutation method is selected, the middle stator is optimized through detailed design through the experimental design method. Afterwards, it has the advantage of being able to shift without stopping due to the characteristic of a dual rotor. For this, an analysis of the driving characteristics for each mode is performed.

Abstract:In this paper, a multiphase bearingless motor (MBLM) with a single set of half-coiled winding is proposed, with advantages such as simpler construction and capability of fault-tolerant operation, comparing with the traditional BLM with dual groups of three-phase windings. The magnetomotive force distribution of the half-coiled winding is analyzed. Then, the winding configuration of a five-phase permanent-magnet bearingless motor is introduced, and the inductance of the MBLM is deduced by the modified winding function approach and verified by finite-element analysis. Furthermore, the control system is proposed based on the derived voltage model, torque model, and suspension force model, considering rotor eccentricity. Finally, static and dynamic experiments are provided on a prototype motor to verify the validity of the analysis.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of reliability reduction caused by brushes in electrical variable transmission (EVT), a new structure permanent magnet induction cascaded brushless dual rotor machine (PMI-CBDRM) is proposed, which is used to replace the dual rotor machine in EVT. Firstly, this paper will introduce the structure and principle of PMI-CBDRM. The cascading asynchronous torque characteristic of PMI-CDRBM is analyzed by the equivalent circuit method. Compared with the finite element calculation results, the coincidence of results are good, and the correctness of the calculation model is verified. Moreover, the full-speed domain torque characteristics are analyzed, such as the cascaded asynchronous torque, doubly-fed synchronous torque, transient torque, etc. Finally, the feasibility of PMI-CBDRM in the dual-mechanical port contactless torque transmission and speed regulation system is discussed.

Abstract:Piezoelectric-driven multi-degree-of-freedom motors can turn off self-lock, withstand high and low temperatures, are small in size and compact in structure, and can easily achieve miniaturization. However, they have a short life cycle and limited applications. In addition, high-intensity operation will result in a decrease in their stability. Electromagnetic-driven multi-degree-of-freedom motors, on the other hand, are simple and highly integrated, but they are large in volume and lack positioning accuracy. Therefore, combining the two drive modes can achieve complementary advantages, such as improving the motor's torque, accuracy, and output performance. Firstly, the structure of the hybrid drive motor is introduced and its working principle is analyzed. The motor can achieve single and hybrid drive control, which is beneficial to improving the performance of the motor. Secondly, the influence of magnetization mode, permanent magnet thickness, slot torque, and stator mode on the motor is analyzed. Thirdly, the structure of the motor is determined to be 6 poles and 15 slots, the thickness of the permanent magnet is 12 mm, and the radial magnetization mode is used. Finally, the mixed torque and speed of the motor in the multi-degree-of-freedom direction are tested by experiments, which indirectly verifies the rationality of the structure design.

Abstract:In addition to the characteristics of a conventional motor, a novel direct-drive double-stator perma-nent-magnet brushless motor proposed can operate in the state of either a generator or a motor as appropriate.Through numerical calculation and analysis, the output torque of double-stator permanent-magnet brushless motor of the same volume as the traditional machine is discussed, and the reduction of torque ripple by using the structure features of this motor is investigated. The results indicate that lower torque ripple under the condition of ideal effective torque can be obtained by the rational design of motor. The prototype motors tested show that this kind of motor structure has a higher power density.

Abstract:High-torque and low-speed electrical drives are often employed for applications where mechanical gearing cannot be accommodated. On the other hand, permanent-magnet (PM) gear has drawn significant attention from both academies and industries due to the conspicuous merits, such as reduced acoustic noise, maintenance free, improved reliability, precise peak torque transmission capability, and inherent overload protection. In this paper, a magnetic-geared PM brushless motor is presented. It is a novel low-speed and high-torque motor which merges the advantages of conventional PM brushless motor and PM gear. Its topology and operation principle are introduced. Some techniques are employed to optimize and improve the motor performance, while the validity of the proposed techniques is verified with finite-element analysis. Moreover, an alternative operation condition, which can further reduce the motor speed and increase its output torque, is proposed and analyzed.

Abstract:Four in-wheel motors drive electric vehicles are driven by four brushless DC hub motors.Since the back electromotive force(emf) waveform of a permanent brushless DC hub motor is usually nearly sinusoidal,the maximum torque per ampere control can be found using field oriented control(FOC).An efficiency model for a permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) was used in an efficiency model of multi-PMSMs with the same speed and torque.The optimal efficiency can be achieved based on the average torque distribution assuming all the same speed PMSMs.This conclusion can be applied to the torque distribution of brushless DC hub motors for four-wheel drive electric vehicles.Simulation and experimental results show that the average torque allocation to the four hub motors of the electric vehicle gives the best efficiency.
