Abstract:Several studies of the surface effect on bending properties of a nanowire (NW) have been conducted. However, these analyses are mainly based on theoretical predictions, and there is seldom integration study in combination between theoretical predictions and simulation results. Thus, based on the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and different modified beam theories, a comprehensive theoretical and numerical study for bending properties of nanowires considering surface/intrinsic stress effects and axial extension effect is conducted in this work. The discussion begins from the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and Timoshenko beam theory augmented with surface effect. It is found that when the NW possesses a relatively small cross-sectional size, these two theories cannot accurately interpret the true surface effect. The incorporation of axial extension effect into Euler-Bernoulli beam theory provides a nonlinear solution that agrees with the nonlinear-elastic experimental and MD results. However, it is still found inaccurate when the NW cross-sectional size is relatively small. Such inaccuracy is also observed for the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory augmented with both contributions from surface effect and axial extension effect. A comprehensive model for completely considering influences from surface stress, intrinsic stress, and axial extension is then proposed, which leads to good agreement with MD simulation results. It is thus concluded that, for NWs with a relatively small cross-sectional size, a simple consideration of surface stress effect is inappropriate, and a comprehensive consideration of the intrinsic stress effect is required.
Analyses of Transverse Vibrations of Axially Pretensioned Viscoelastic Nanobeams with Small Size and Surface Effects

Abstract:The general governing equation for transverse vibration of an axially pretensioned viscoelastic nanobeam embedded in elastic substrate medium is formulated on the basis of the Bernoulli–Euler beam theory and the Kelvin model. The factors of structural damping, initial axial tension, surrounding medium, small size, surface elasticity and residual surface tension are incorporated in the formulation. The explicit expression is obtained for the vibrational frequency of a simply supported nanobeam. The impacts of these factors on the properties of transverse vibration of the nanobeam are discussed. It is demonstrated that the dependences of natural frequency on the structural damping, surrounding medium, small size, surface elasticity and residual surface tension are significant, whereas the effect of initial axial tension on the natural frequency is limited. In addition, it can be concluded that the energy dissipation of transverse vibration of the viscoelastic nanobeam is related to the small size effect and structural damping.

Abstract:Surface effects on the free vibration characteristics of nanobeams are investigated by a modified continuum model. In this paper, the relationship between the parameters of the modified continuum model of surface effects including surface elasticity, surface density, and residual surface stresses, and the parameters of the atomistic lattice model such as surface relaxation and reconstruction in nanobeams is characterized by an atomistic lattice model. The surface effects are incorporated into nanobeams to develop a modified continuum model depicting the free vibrational behavior of nanobeams. The model is validated with the experimental data of an effective size-dependent Young's modulus and the previous theoretical results. The results demonstrate that both surface elasticity and surface density vary exponentially with surface layer thickness. Therefore, surface elasticity and density can be affected by surface relaxation and residual surface stresses can be induced by surface reconstruction. The natural frequencies of doubly clamped nanobeams can be affected by the dimensions of the nanobeams, surface layer thickness, and residual surface stress. This work may be helpful for understanding surface effects and their influence on the vibrational behavior of nanobeams.

Abstract:The effect of electrostatic force on the dynamic response of a Bernoulli-Euler piezoelectric nanobeam is analyzed in this paper. The governing equations with the electrostatic stress are derived based on a variational principle. Static bending problem of simply supported and cantilever beam is considered. The influence of the electrostatic force on the first four natural frequencies is discussed. It is shown that when the beam thickness is small, the effect of the electrostatic force is significant. When the beam thickness is large, the electrostatic force is insignificant and can be neglected. The results also indicate that one can adjust the natural frequency of a nanobeam by applying appropriate voltage.

Abstract:The nanobeam resonator is the key mechanical component in the nano-electromechanical system. In addition to its high frequency originating from its low dimension, the performance is significantly influenced by the circumstances, especially at nanoscale where a large surface area of the material is exposed. Molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical analysis are used for a quantitative prediction on the damping behavior, such as the critical damping condition and lifetime, of nanobeam resonators that directly maps the fluid-structure properties and interaction information into dynamical behaviors. We show here how the humidity defines the critical damping condition through viscous forces, marking the transition from under-damping to over-damping regime at elevated humidity. Novel phenomena such as the thermal fluctuation and paddling effects are also discussed.

Abstract:The dynamic characteristics of finite-length periodic parameter beams are studied. The differential equation of motion of the periodic parameter beams is presented, and the partial differential equation with spatial varying parameters for the periodic-height beam is obtained. Then, the equation is converted into a multi-DOF state equation using Galerkin method, and a set of algebraic equations for natural frequencies of the periodic beam is obtained. Numerical results are given. The influence of the number of series expansion terms of the displacement on the natural frequencies and dynamic characteristics of the beam is analyzed. Variation of the natural frequencies with the change of the frequency and amplitude of the periodic parameter, degeneration of the band gaps among the natural frequencies, and the bending waves scattering are analyzed in the case of large periodic parameter frequencies.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study size effects on the impact response of copper nanobeam targets subjected to impacts by copper nanobeam flyers with different impact velocities. It is found that the Hugoniot response is size-dependent, while the aspect ratio – that is, the ratio of flyer and target nanobeam heights – has a small effect. It is also observed that the propagation speed of a disordering front generated at the impact surface is close to the shock wave speed initially, but decreases as dislocations form. The thermal gradient in the target is mainly due to the quasi-temperature difference (transient spatial localization of kinetic energy) between hexagonal-close-packed atoms and face-centered-cubic atoms. The findings for the impact stress, defect evolution, and quasi-temperature could be useful for better understanding the responses of nanosystems to extreme loading conditions.

Abstract:This paper deals with the bending of Bernoulli-Euler piezoelectric nanobeams. Unlike in the classical theory, the effect of electrostatic force is taken into account. A variational principle is employed to derive the governing equations, and the electrostatic force moment is defined. The electrostatic force moment depends on the piezoelectricity. A cantilever beam problem is solved. It is shown that the effect of the electrostatic force on the deflection of the beam is significant when the beam thickness is small, and decreases with increase of the beam thickness. The results indicate that the deflection of a nanobeam can be modified through the electrostatic force by adjusting the voltage.

Abstract:Investigations of wave and vibration properties of single- or multi-walled carbon nanotubes based on nonlocal beam models have been reported recently. However, there are numerous inconsistencies in the handling of the governing equations, applied forces, and boundary conditions based on some of the reported nonlocal beam models. In this paper, the consistent equations of motion for the nonlocal Euler and Timoshenko beam models are provided, and some issues on the nonlocal beam theories are discussed. The models are then applied to the studies of wave properties of single- and double-walled nanotubes. The wave and vibration properties of the nanotubes based on the presented nonlocal beam equations are studied, and scale effects are discussed.
Investigation into the Dynamic Stability of Nanobeams by Using the Levinson Beam Model

Abstract:Dynamic stability is an important mechanical behavior of nanobeams, which has been studied extensively using the Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories, while the Levinson-beam-theory-based dynamic instability analysis of nanobeams has not been investigated yet. Shear deformation is not or is not suitably considered in the Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko theories, so it is very important to introduce the Levinson beam theory in the dynamic stability analysis of nanobeams, which correctly models the combined action of bending and shear in nanobeams with smaller length/height ratios. In this work, the equation of the transverse vibration of a Levinson beam embedded in an elastic foundation is firstly formulated based on the displacement field of Levinson beam theory, and the nonlocal theory is further applied to the Levinson nanobeam. Then, the governing equation of the dynamic stability of the Levinson nanobeam is derived using Bolotin's method to achieve a generalized eigenvalue problem corresponding to the boundaries of regions of dynamic instability. The principal instability region (PIR) is the most important among all regions, so the boundary of the PIR is focused on in this work to investigate the dynamic stability of the Levinson nanobeam. When the width, length/height ratio, density, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, size scale parameter, and medium stiffness increase by about 1.5 times, the width of the PIR changes by about 19%, -57%, -20%, 65%, 0, -9%, and -11%, respectively. If a smaller critical excitation frequency and narrower width of the PIR correspond to the better performance of dynamic stability, the study shows that the dynamic stability of the Levinson nanobeam embedded in an elastic medium improves under a larger length and density and a smaller width, height, and Young's modulus, since these factors are related to the natural frequency of the nanobeam which controls the width of the PIR. Additionally, the local model would overestimate the dynamic stability behavior of the Levinson nanobeam.

Abstract:In this work, a unified high-order nanobeam model considering various high-order shear deformation beam theories is established to investigate the vibration response of nanobeam on the basis of two-phase local/nonlocal strain and stress gradient theory, as well as surface elasticity theory. The unified model also includes the Euler-Bernoulli beam model and Timoshenko beam model. Herein, the elastic dynamics governing equations and boundary conditions are derived using Hamilton's principle, and the analytical solutions, such as exact formulas for natural frequencies, are obtained by employing the Navier method for simply supported boundary conditions. The effects of local volume fraction, nonlocal parameter, material length scale parameter, shear deformation and surface energy in stress and strain-driven models are analyzed in detail, respectively. The parametric studies reveal that the two scale parameters (nonlocal parameters and material length characteristic parameters) have opposite effects on the stiffness of the nanobeams in the two driving models, while the surface parameters have the same effect on the stiffness of the two driving models. The influence of the slenderness ratio on the surface effect and scale effect is opposite, meaning that the increase of the slenderness ratio deepens the influence of the surface effect but weakens the influence of the scale effect. There are also differences in the effects of higher-order modes on the two effects. Higher modes lead to more significant scale effects, but the effect of higher modes on surface effects depends on the surface elastic properties of the material. We also find that the introduction of surface elasticity increases the gap between the TBT and other higher-order beams, which indicates the prediction results of the higher-order beam model are more accurate when both surface and nonlocal effects are considered. In addition, it is represented that the surface elasticity makes aluminum nanobeams exhibit a stiffness softening effect, while the effect of surface elasticity on the stiffness of silicon nanobeams is significantly dependent on the slenderness ratio and the number of modes.

Abstract:One-dimensional nanostructured materials are often used as beams in many applications such as ultrahigh-frequency resonators and ultrasensitive sensors. Compared with usual macroscopic beams, nanobeams have much higher surface/volume ratios so that their surface energies may play a significant role. Besides, they often bear large deflections due to their typically large slenderness ratios and larger elastic ranges. There is, however, lack of a theory that takes into account of both the above two features owned by nanobeams. In this paper, we present such a theory and give applied examples to show that surface energy and large deflection may individually or jointly have notable effects.

Abstract:A novel method that combined molecular dynamics and finite element analysis was suggested to investigate the mechanics behavior of nano-beams. This method took the advantages of the efficiency of continuum mechanics method and the accuracy of atomistic simulation method. In this combined method, the initial atomistic model was transformed to continuum model, and an approximate solution was first obtained with finite element method. The deformed continuum model was transformed back to form a new atomistic model, and molecular dynamics simulation was performed to quickly reach the final stable equilibrium state. An example fortension and bending was presented to demonstrate the validation and efficiency of the present method.

Abstract:Using an improved multilayer-beams model, the surface effect caused by surface stress and surface elasticity on mechanical properties of laminated nanobeams in bending, bucking and vibration is incorporated into the nonlinear beam theory. Analytical solutions are obtained to study the influence of surface and interface effects for simply supported boundary conditions. Unlike the deduction of previous beam theory, the theoretical derivation in present work includes the effect of both surface and interface. Numerical cases of double layer and multilayer Nickel-silver laminated beams indicate that the interface effect observably change the elastic behaviour of laminated beams on the nanometer scale, especially for multilayer cases.
Effects of Residual Stress on Static and Dynamic Characteristics of an Electrostatically Actuated Nanobeam

Abstract:Electrostatically actuated nanotubes and nanowires have many promising applications as nano-switches, ultra sensitive sensors and signal processing elements. These devices can be modelled as slender beams with circular cross-section. In this paper, effects of residual stress on static and dynamic characteristics of a cylindrical nanobeam are presented. Galerkin based multi-modal reduced order model technique has been used to solve the governing differential equation. The equation has also been solved numerically by collocation method for verification of the results. The effects of higher modes in reduced order modelling have been investigated. The analysis shows that the residual stress significantly influence the static and dynamic characteristics of the nanobeam. In particular, the results show that resonating frequency tunability increases significantly under the presence of compressive residual stress. In addition, an inherent resonating frequency stability mechanism under temperature variation in nanobeam resonators has also been explored.

Abstract:A size-dependent sinusoidal shear deformation beam model is developed to investigate the free vibration of nanobeams based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory. The new model contains a nonlocal parameter and a material length scale parameter which can capture the size effect. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by employing Hamilton's principle. Navier's method is utilized to obtain analytical solutions for natural frequencies of simply supported nanobeams. The results are compared with other beam models and other classical and non-classical theories. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effects of nonlocal parameter, material length scale parameter, slenderness ratio and shear deformation on the free vibration of nanobeams. It is found that natural frequencies predicted by the nonlocal strain gradient theory are higher than those predicted by nonlocal theory and lower than those obtained by strain gradient theory. When the length scale parameter is smaller than the nonlocal parameter, the nanobeam exerts a stiffness-softening effect. When the length scale parameter is larger than the nonlocal parameter, the nanobeam exerts a stiffness-hardening effect. Moreover, it is observed that the effect of shear deformation becomes more significant for nanobeams with lower values of slenderness ratios and for higher modes.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the system of a simply supported beam immersed in a granular medium, which displays jump and new peaks in its amplitude-frequency curve under harmonic excitation. The relationship between the macroscopic nonlinear response and microscopic state of the granular medium was studied using the discrete element method. Using the dynamic modulus and vibrational density of states as indicators, we show that the granular medium changes from a liquid-like to solid-like state when the frequency increases to approach the jumping point. Considering the similarity between this system and acoustic metamaterial beams, an equivalent theoretical model was established for the former. Numerical results of the theoretical model were consistent with the experimental ones. It was revealed that the new peak and jump phenomena were caused by negative equivalent mass, negative equivalent stiffness of the granular medium and abrupt change in the additional stiffness cause by the jamming transition. This theoretical model is useful for studying the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of this coupled grain-beam system.

Abstract:International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, a comprehensive dynamical analysis of porous-reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposite beams on viscoelastic foundations is presented. Using a three-unknown shear beam theory, the two-nodded finite element model was formulated and adapted for both [math] and [math] continuities for displacement variables. This model captured the distinct characteristics and interactions of the porous medium, CNT reinforcements, and the intrinsic damping introduced by the viscoelastic foundation. The dynamical investigation incorporates both free and forced vibration analysis, and the Newmark method is employed for time-dependent analysis, ensuring accurate temporal behavior prediction. The study also emphasizes the impact of different CNT distribution patterns and porosity variations on the mechanical properties of the beams, particularly in terms of stiffness and damping characteristics. Further depth is added by analyzing the interactions between beams and both Winkler and Pasternak foundation models, with findings that highlight the importance of foundation parameters in the overall dynamic response. The results shed light on the critical role each component plays in the composite beam's dynamic response, offering insights for potential innovative designs and applications in both advanced structural engineering and nanotechnology domains.

Abstract:The mixture unified gradient theory of elasticity is invoked for the rigorous analysis of the dynamic characteristics of elastic nanobeams. A consistent variational framework is established and the boundary-value problem of dynamic equilibrium enriched with proper form of the extra non-standard boundary conditions is detected. As a well-established privilege of the stationary variational theorems, the constitutive laws of the resultant fields cast as differential relations. The wave dispersion response of elastic nano-sized beams is analytically addressed and the closed form solution of the phase velocity is determined. The free vibrations of the mixture unified gradient elastic beam is, furthermore, analytically studied. The dynamic characteristics of elastic nanobeams is numerically evaluated, graphically illustrated, and commented upon. The efficacy of the established augmented elasticity theory in realizing the softening and stiffening responses of nano-sized beams is evinced. New numerical benchmark is detected for dynamic analysis of elastic nanobeams. The established mixture unified gradient elasticity model provides a practical approach to tackle dynamics of nano-structures in pioneering MEMS/NEMS.
