Abstract:Let A be a non-unital and sigma-unital simple C*-algebra. We show that if M(A)/A is simple, then M(A)/A is purely infinite. We also show that M(A)/A is simple if and only if A has a continuous scale provided that A is not isomorphic to K; the compact operators.

Abstract:Suppose that A is a unital purely infinite simple C∗-algebra. If the class [1] of the unit 1 in K0(A) has torsion, then csr(A) = ∞; if [1] is torsion-free in K0(A), then csr(A) = 2. Abstract:We study the range of a classifiable class A of unital separable simple amenable C∗-algebras which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem. The class A contains all unital simple AH-algebras. We show that all unital simple inductive limits of dimension drop circle C∗-algebras are also in the class. This unifies some of the previous known classification results for unital simple amenable C∗-algebras. We also show that there are many other C∗-algebras in the class. We prove that, for any partially ordered simple weakly unperforated rationally Riesz group G0 with order unit u, any countable abelian group G1, any metrizable Choquet simplex S, and any surjective affine continuous map r:S→Su(G0) (where Su(G0) is the state space of G0) which preserves extremal points, there exists one and only one (up to isomorphism) unital separable simple amenable C∗-algebra A in the classifiable class A such that((K0(A),K0(A)+,[1A]),K1(A),T(A),λA)=((G0,(G0)+,u),G1,S,r).

Abstract:Let C and A be two unital separable amenable simple C ∗ -algebras with tracial rank at most one. Suppose that C satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem and suppose that ϕ 1 , ϕ 2 : C → A are two unital monomorphisms. We show that there is a continuous path of unitaries u t : t ∈[0,∞) of A such that lim_t→∞u_t^*φ_1(c)u_t=φ_2(c) c∈ C if and only if [ ϕ 1 ]=[ ϕ 2 ] in KK(C,A),φ_1^=φ_2^,(φ_1)_T=(φ _2)_T and a rotation related map R_φ_1,φ_2 associated with ϕ 1 and ϕ 2 is zero. Applying this result together with a result of W. Winter, we give a classification theorem for a class 𝒜 of unital separable simple amenable C ∗ -algebras which is strictly larger than the class of separable C ∗ -algebras with tracial rank zero or one. Tensor products of two C ∗ -algebras in 𝒜 are again in 𝒜 . Moreover, this class is closed under inductive limits and contains all unital simple ASH-algebras for which the state space of K 0 is the same as the tracial state space and also some unital simple ASH-algebras whose K 0 -group is ℤ and whose tracial state spaces are any metrizable Choquet simplex. One consequence of the main result is that all unital simple AH-algebras which are 𝒵 -stable are isomorphic to ones with no dimension growth.

Abstract:Let A and B be two unital separable simple nuclear C*-algebras with tracial topological rank zero. Suppose that both A and B have the local approximation property: for any finite subset F and ε>0, there is a C*-subalgebra C such that its dimensions of irreducible representations are bounded anddist(x, C)<εforallx∈F. Suppose also that ρA(K0(A)) is a divisible group, where ρA:K0(A)→Aff(T(A)) is the homomorphism from K0(A) to affine functions on the tracial space of A. Then A≅B if and only if(K0(A), K0(A)+, [1A], K1(A))≅(K0(B), K0(B)+, [1B], K1(B)). Applications to simple crossed products arising from smooth minimal dynamical systems are given. Let M1 and M2 be compact manifolds, hi:Mi→Mi be a minimal diffeomorphism (i=1, 2) and let Ai=C*(Z, Mi, hi). Suppose that TR(Ai)=0 and the range of K0(Ai) in Aff(T(Ai)) is divisible. Then A1≅A2 if and only if(K0(A1), K0(A1), [1A1], K0(A1)))≅(K0(A2), K0(A2)+, [1A2], K1(A2)).

Abstract:Let A and C be two unital simple C∗-algebras with tracial rank zero. Suppose that C is amenable and satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem. Denote by KKe(C,A)++ the set of those κ in KK(C,A) for which κ(K0(C)+∖{0})⊂K0(A)+∖{0} and κ([1C])=[1A]. Suppose that κ∈KKe(C,A)++. We show that there is a unital monomorphism ϕ:C→A such that [ϕ]=κ. Suppose that C is a unital AH-algebra and λ:T(A)→Tf(C) is a continuous affine map for which τ(κ([p]))=λ(τ)(p) for all projections p in all matrix algebras of C and any τ∈T(A), where T(A) is the simplex of tracial states of A and Tf(C) is the convex set of faithful tracial states of C. We prove that there is a unital monomorphism ϕ:C→A such that ϕ induces both κ and λ. Suppose that h:C→A is a unital monomorphism and γ∈Hom(K1(C),Aff(A)). We show that there exists a unital monomorphism ϕ:C→A such that [ϕ]=[h] in KK(C,A), τ○ϕ=τ○h for all tracial states τ and the associated rotation map can be given by γ. Denote by KKT(C,A)++ the set of compatible pairs (κ,λ), where κ∈KLe(C,A)++ and λ is a continuous affine map from T(A) to Tf(C). Together with a result on asymptotic unitary equivalence in [H. Lin, Asymptotic unitary equivalence and asymptotically inner automorphisms, arXiv:math/0703610, 2007], this provides a bijection from the asymptotic unitary equivalence classes of unital monomorphisms from C to A to (KKT(C,A)++,Hom(K1(C),Aff(T(A)))/R0), where R0 is a subgroup related to vanishing rotation maps. As an application, combining these results with a result of W. Winter [W. Winter, Localizing the Elliott conjecture at strongly self-absorbing C∗-algebras, arXiv:0708.0283v3, 2007], we show that two unital amenable simple Z-stable C∗-algebras are isomorphic if they have the same Elliott invariant and the tensor products of these C∗-algebras with any UHF-algebra have tracial rank zero. In particular, if A and B are two unital separable simple Z-stable C∗-algebras with unique tracial states which are inductive limits of C∗-algebras of type I, then they are isomorphic if and only if they have isomorphic Elliott invariants.

Abstract:AbstractLet A be an amenable separable C*-algebra and B be a non-unital but σ-unital simple C*- algebra with continuous scale. We show that two essential extensions τ1 and τ2 of A by B are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only ifIf A is assumed to satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem, there is a bijection fromapproximate unitary equivalence classes of the abovementioned extensions to KL(A,M(B)/B). Using KL(A,M(B)/B), we compute exactly when an essential extension is quasidiagonal. We show that quasidiagonal extensions may not be approximately trivial. We also study the approximately trivial extensions.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal D$ be a strongly self-absorbing $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra. Given any separable $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $A$, our two main results assert the following. If $A$ is $\mathcal D$-stable, then the corona algebra of $A$ is $\mathcal D$-saturated, i.e., $\mathcal D$ embeds unitally into the relative commutant of every separable $\mathrm{C}^*$-subalgebra. Conversely, assuming that the stable corona of $A$ is separably $\mathcal D$-stable, we prove that $A$ is $\mathcal D$-stable. This generalizes recent work by the first-named author on the structure of the Calkin algebra. As an immediate corollary, it follows that the multiplier algebra of a separable $\mathcal D$-stable $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra is separably $\mathcal D$-stable. Appropriate versions of the aforementioned results are also obtained when $A$ is not necessarily separable. The article ends with some non-trivial applications.

Abstract:We show that all trivial (unital and essential) extensions of C (X) by a σ-unital purely infinite simple C*-algebra A with K1(A) = 0 are unitarily equivalent, provided that X is homeomorphic to a compact subset of the real line or the unit circle. Therefore all (unital and essential) extensions of such can be completely determined by Ext(B, A). An invariant is introduced to classify all such trivial (unital and essential) extensions of C (X) by a σ-unital C*-algebra A with the properties that RR (M (A)) = 0 and C (A) is simple.

Abstract:Let A be a simple C*-algebra with real rank zero, stable rank one and weakly unperforated K-0(A) of countable rank. We show that a monomorphism phi: C(S-2) --> A can be approximated pointwise by homomorphisms from C(S-2) into A with finite dimensional range if and only if certain index vanishes. In particular, we show that every homomorphism phi from C(S-2) into a UHF-algebra can be approximated pointwise by homomorphisms from C(S-2) into the UHF-algebra with finite dimensional range. As an application, we show that if A is a simple C*-algebra of real rank zero and is an inductive limit of matrices over C(S-2) then A is an AF-algebra. Similar results for tori are also obtained. Classification of Hom (C(X),A) for lower dimensional spaces is also studied.

Abstract:Let A and B be unital separable simple amenable C*-algebras which satisfy the universal coefficient theorem. Suppose that A and B are Z-stable and and are of rationally tracial rank no more than one. We prove the following: Suppose that phi,psi : A -> B are unital *-monomorphisms. There exists a sequence of unitaries {un} subset of B such that n ->infinity lim un*phi(a)un = psi(a) for all a is an element of A, if and only if [phi] = [psi] in KL(A,B), phi = psi and phi = psi, where phi,psi : Aff(T(A)) -> Aff(T(B)) and phi,psi : U(A) / CII(A) -> U(B)/CU(B) are the induced maps (where T(A) and T(B) are the tracial state spaces of A and B, and CU(A) and CU(B) are the closures of the commutator subgroups of the unitary groups of A and B, respectively). We also show that this holds if A is a rationally AH-algebra which is not necessarily simple. Moreover, for any strictly positive unit-preserving kappa is an element of KL(A,B), any continuous affine map A : Aff(T(A)) -> Aff(T(B)) and any continuous group homomorphism gamma : U(A) / CU(A) -> U(B)/CU(B) which are compatible, we also show that there is a unital homomorphism phi : A -> B so that ([phi], phi,psi) = (kappa, lambda, gamma), at least in the case that K-1 (A) is a free group.

Abstract:Let A be a separable amenable purely infinite simple C*-algebra which satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem. We prove that A is weakly semiprojective if and only if K-i(A) is a countable direct sum of finitely generated groups (i = 0, 1). Therefore, if A is such a C*-algebra, for any epsilon > 0 and any finite subset F subset of A there exist delta > 0 and a finite subset G subset of A satisfying the following: for any contractive positive linear map L : A --> B (for any C* -algebra B) with parallel to L(ab) - L(a)L(b)parallel to < delta for a, b is an element of G there exists a homomorphism h: A -> B such that parallel to h(a) - L(a)parallel to < epsilon for a is an element of T.

Abstract:A Banach space characterization of simple real or complex $C^*$-algebras is given which even characterizes the underlying field. As an application, it is shown that if $\mathfrak A_1$ and $\mathfrak A_2$ are Birkhoff-James isomorphic simple $C^*$-algebras over the fields $\mathbb F_1$ and $\mathbb F_2$, respectively and if $\mathfrak A_1$ is finite-dimensional with dimension greater than one, then $\mathbb F_1=\mathbb F_2$ and $\mathfrak A_1$ and $\mathfrak A_2$ are (isometrically) $\ast$-isomorphic $C^*$-algebras.

Abstract:Let A be a unital simple AH-algebra with real rank zero. It is shown that if A satisfies a so-called fundamental comparison property, then A has tracial topological rank zero.
