Abstract:A method for the decomposition of the organic compounds of coke plant wastewater by ultrasonic cavitation was presented. The factors dominating the decomposition efficiencies of the organic compounds, such as the presence of saturated air atmosphere, the initial CODCr concentrations, the ultrasonic energy densities, the initial pH values and the temperatures of the wastewater, were examined. The experimental results show that the decomposition efficiency of the organic compounds by ultrasonic cavitation increases with the presence of saturated air atmosphere, the decrease of initial CODCr concentrations, and the increase of ultrasonic energy densities, and decreases greatly in the presence of n-butyl alcohol, which is an effective scavenger of free radicals. However, the wastewater temperature has only little effect on the decomposition efficiency of the organic compounds. The GC/MS analysis further confirmed that most of the organic compounds in the wastewater were effectively decomposed by ultrasonic cavitation. It is concluded that the ultrasonic cavitation probably becomes a new method to decompose the organic compounds in the coke plant wastewater. The mechanism of the ultrasonic decomposition of the organic compounds would be that ·OH free radicals generated by ultrasonic cavitation in the wastewater make the organic compounds oxidized. The ultrasonic decomposition process of the organic compounds follows the pseudo first-order kinetics.
