Abstract:The authors show that the self-similar set for a finite family of contractive similitudes (similaxities, i.e., \f(i)(x) - f(i)(y)\ = a(i)\x - y\, x,y is an element of R-N, where 0 < ai < 1) is uniformly perfect except the case that it is a singleton. As a corollary, it is proved that this self-similar set has positive Hausdorff dimension provided that it is not a singleton. And a lower bound of the upper box dimension of the uniformly perfect sets is given: Meanwhile the uniformly perfect set with Hausdorff measure zero in its Hausdorff dimension is given.

Abstract:Under weaker condition than that of Riedi & Mandelbrot, the Hausdorff (and Hausdorff-Besicovitch) dimension of infinite self-similar set K which is the invariant compact set of infinite contractive similarities {S_j(x)} satisfying open set condition is obtained. It is proved (under some additional hypotheses) that the mean quadratic variation of infinite self-similar measure is of asymptotic property.

Abstract:We quantify the pointwise doubling properties of self-similar measures using the notion of pointwise Assouad dimension. We show that all self-similar measures satisfying the open set condition are pointwise doubling in a set of full Hausdorff dimension, despite the fact that they can in general be non-doubling in a set of full Hausdorff measure. More generally, we carry out multifractal analysis by determining the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets of the pointwise Assouad dimension.

Abstract:Consider a sequence of linear contractions $S_{j}(x)=\varrho x+d_{j}$ and probabilities $p_{j}>0$ with $\sum p_{j}=1$. We are interested in the self-similar measure $\mu =\sum p_{j}\mu \circ S_{j}^{-1}$, of finite type. In this paper we study the multi-fractal analysis of such measures, extending the theory to measures arising from non-regular probabilities and whose support is not necessarily an interval. Under some mild technical assumptions, we prove that there exists a subset of supp$\mu $ of full $\mu $ and Hausdorff measure, called the truly essential class, for which the set of (upper or lower) local dimensions is a closed interval. Within the truly essential class we show that there exists a point with local dimension exactly equal to the dimension of the support. We give an example where the set of local dimensions is a two element set, with all the elements of the truly essential class giving the same local dimension. We give general criteria for these measures to be absolutely continuous with respect to the associated Hausdorff measure of their support and we show that the dimension of the support can be computed using only information about the essential class. To conclude, we present a detailed study of three examples. First, we show that the set of local dimensions of the biased Bernoulli convolution with contraction ratio the inverse of a simple Pisot number always admits an isolated point. We give a precise description of the essential class of a generalized Cantor set of finite type. Lastly, we study a maximal loop class that is not truly essential.

Pointwise density estimation on metric spaces and applications in seismology

Abstract:We are studying the problem of estimating density in a wide range of metric spaces, including the Euclidean space, the sphere, the ball, and various Riemannian manifolds. Our framework involves a metric space with a doubling measure and a self-adjoint operator, whose heat kernel exhibits Gaussian behaviour. We begin by reviewing the construction of kernel density estimators and the related background information. As a novel result, we present a pointwise kernel density estimation for probability density functions that belong to general Hölder spaces. The study is accompanied by an application in Seismology. Precisely, we analyze a globally-indexed dataset of earthquake occurrence and compare the out-of-sample performance of several approximated kernel density estimators indexed on the sphere.

Abstract:For a probability vector (p(0),p(1)) there exists a corresponding self-similar Borel probability measure mu supported on the Cantor set C (with the strong separation property) in R generated by a contractive similitude h(i)(x) = a(i)x + b(i), i = 0, 1. Let S denote the set of points of C at which the probability distribution function F(x) of p has no derivative, finite or infinite. The Hausdorff and packing dimensions of S have been found by several authors for the case that p(i) > a(i), i = 0, 1. However, when p(0) < a(0) (or equivalently p(1) < a(1)) the structure of S changes significantly and the previous approaches fail to be effective any more. The present paper is devoted to determining the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of S for the case p(0) < a(0).

Abstract:A finite set of unlabelled points in Euclidean space is the simplest representation of many real objects from mineral rocks to sculptures. Since most solid objects are rigid, their natural equivalence is rigid motion or isometry maintaining all inter-point distances. More generally, any finite metric space is an example of a metric-measure space that has a probability measure and a metric satisfying all axioms. This paper develops Simplexwise Distance Distributions (SDDs) for any finite metric spaces and metric-measures spaces. These SDDs classify all known non-equivalent spaces that were impossible to distinguish by simpler invariants. We define metrics on SDDs that are Lipschitz continuous and allow exact computations whose parametrised complexities are polynomial in the number of given points.

Abstract:For infinite measure-theoretic entropy systems, we introduce the notion of measure-theoretic metric mean dimension of invariant measures for different types of measure-theoretic $\epsilon$-entropies, and show that measure-theoretic metric mean dimensions of different types of measure-theoretic $\epsilon$-entropies coincide with the packing metric mean dimension of the set of generic points of ergodic measures.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the smoothness of the density function of absolutely continuous measures supported on random self-similar sets on the line. We show that the natural projection of a measure with symbolic local dimension greater than 1 at every point is absolutely continuous with Hölder continuous density almost surely. In particular, if the similarity dimension is greater than 1 then the random self-similar set on the line contains an interior point almost surely.

Abstract:For $\lambda\in(0,1/2]$ let $K_\lambda \subset\mathbb{R}$ be a self-similar set generated by the iterated function system $\{\lambda x, \lambda x+1-\lambda\}$. Given $x\in(0,1/2)$, let $\Lambda(x)$ be the set of $\lambda\in(0,1/2]$ such that $x\in K_\lambda$. In this paper we show that $\Lambda(x)$ is a topological Cantor set having zero Lebesgue measure and full Hausdorff dimension. Furthermore, we show that for any $y_1,\ldots, y_p\in(0,1/2)$ there exists a full Hausdorff dimensional set of $\lambda\in(0,1/2]$ such that $y_1,\ldots, y_p \in K_\lambda$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new notion called the box-counting measure of a metric space. We show that for a doubling metric space, an Ahlfors regular measure is always a box-counting measure; consequently, if E is a self-similar set satisfying the open set condition, then the Hausdorff measure restricted to E is a box-counting measure. We show two classes of self-affine sets, the generalized Lalley-Gatzouras type self-affine sponges and Barański carpets, always admit box-counting measures; this also provides a very simple method to calculate the box-dimension of these fractals. Moreover, among others, we show that if two doubling metric spaces admit box-counting measures, then the multi-fractal spectra of the box-counting measures coincide provided the two spaces are Lipschitz equivalent.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue the study in our previous work Beurling dimenison and self-similar measures [ J. Funct. Anal. 274 (2018) 2245–2264]. We analyze the Beurling dimension of Bessel sequences and frame spectra of self-affine measures on Rd . Unlike the case for the self-similar measures, it is very difficult to obtain a general expression for the dimension of self-affine sets. This implies that the Hausdorff dimension may be not a good candidate that controls the Beurling dimension in general. Instead, we find that the pseudo Hausdorff dimension proposed by He and Lau [ Math. Nachr. 281 (2008) 1142–1158] can be a good candidate that can control the Beurling dimension. With the help of the pseudo Hausdorff dimension, we obtain the upper bounds of the Beurling dimension of Bessel sequences. Under suitable condition, we give the lower bound of the Beurling dimension of frame spectra of self-affine measures on Rd . Some examples are given to illustrate our theory.

Let s = dim H E be the Hausdorff dimension of E, and let μ=Hs|E be the s-dimensional Hausdorff measure restricted to E. In this paper we describe, for each x ∈ E, the pointwise lower s-density Θ*s(μ,x) and upper s-density Θ∗s (μ, x) of μ at x. This extends some early results of Feng et al (2000 J. Math. Anal. Appl. 250 692–705). Furthermore, we determine two critical values a c and b c for the sets E*(a)=x∈E:Θ*s(μ,x)⩾aandE*(b)=x∈E:Θ*s(μ,x)⩽b respectively, such that dim H E *(a) > 0 if and only if a < a c, and that dim H E*(b) > 0 if and only if b > b c. We emphasize that both values a c and b c are related to the Thue–Morse type sequences, and our strategy to find them relies on ideas from open dynamical systems and techniques from combinatorics on words.
