Epidemiological features of heroin addicts in Shanghai and Guangzhou cities

Abstract:Aim: To explore the epidemiological features of demography and drug abuse of heroin addicts in Shanghai and Guangzhou cities. Methods: Totally 1 034 heroin addicts were involved in the study, including 630 cases in Shanghai and 404 cases in Guangzhou. The data of demography, current status of drug abuse and the effects on body were investigated retrospectively by using domestic questionnaire. Results: Most of the heroin addicts in both Shanghai and Guangzhou were young men, unmarried, jobless and had low educational level. Female addicts were significantly younger than male ones. Most of the heroin addicts in Shanghai had the educational level of junior middle school, jobless and females, while those in Guangzhou were young and individual businessmen. The abnormal rate of electroencephalogram (EEG) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase(GPT) of the heroin addicts were significantly higher in Guangzhou than in Shanghai, while the positive rate of hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg) was significantly higher in Shanghai(χ 2 = 269.57, 224.53, 74.37, P =0.000). The social and physical inducing factors of addiction were obvious in Shanghai(χ 2 = 24.01, 14.49; P = 0.000), while the psychological factor was more significant in Guangzhou (χ 2 = 37.58, P = 0.000). The duration of drugs addiction, daily dosage of heroine and times of quit were significantly less in Shanghai than in Guangzhou, while the lasting time to addiction was obviously longer in Shanghai than in Guangzhou (t = 3.77, 13.77, 7.42, 3.99; P = 0.000). Conclusion: There are different epidemiological features of anthropologic culture and economic environment among the heroin addicts in Shanghai and Guangzhou. For this reason, colonization in Shanghai while individualization in Guangzhou should be emphasized on respectively when approaches of prophylaxis and therapy are used.
