Abstract:By extending the normal based subdivision scheme for curve and surface design,a new algorithm for image interpolation is proposed in this paper.The images will be zoomed in by interpolatory subdivision and no intermediate continuous surface model should be established.With proper choices of the subdivision parameters,images can be interpolated with any positive real scale while edges and borders within images can be kept well.Examples and comparisons with some other image interpolation methods show that the new image interpolation algorithm has the advantage of good edge preservation,linear complexity and easy implementation.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of constructing a smooth surface to fit rows of data points. A special class of T-spline surfaces is examined, which is characterized to have a global knot vector in one parameter direction and individual knot vectors from row to row in the other parameter direction. These T-spline surfaces are suitable for lofted surface interpolation or approximation. A skinning algorithm using these T-spline surfaces is proposed, which does not require the knot compatibility of sectional curves. The algorithm consists of three main steps: generating sectional curves by interpolating data points of each row by a B-spline curve; computing the control curves of a skinning surface that interpolates the sectional curves; and approximating each control curve by a B-spline curve with fewer knots, which results in a T-spline surface. Compared with conventional B-spline surface skinning, the proposed T-spline surface skinning has two advantages. First, the sectional curves and the control curves of a T-spline surface can be constructed independently. Second, the generated T-spline skinning surface usually has much fewer control points than a lofted B-spline surface that fits the data points with the same error bound. Experimental examples have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:During the implementation of the fabric CAD system which faces to textile corporations in Shaoxing,in order to simulate the stroke,which is a characteristic technic,impressively and effectively,this paper first brings forward an algorithm of interpolation that uses B-spline curves which pass the setting points,then describes the theory and algorithm used to produce images of stroke in detail,next describes the algorithm of a group of strokes.At last two effect images show the effect of the algorithms.This kind of algorithms has already been used by fabric CAD system which faces to textile corporations in Shaoxing successfully.

Abstract:Due to the problems in Geometric Modeling for Historical Cultural Relics(HCR),a new geometric modeling mending method based on many knot spline interpolation is proposed in this paper.Using Many-Knot spline's local explicit interpolation properties,"null holes" generated in image based geometric modeling in stereo vision system can be filled by many knot spline interpolation algorithm,while geometric modeling for partly damaged HCR can also be mended by Many-Knot spline interpolation algorithm.

Abstract:As a special shift-invariant spaces, spline subspaces yield many advantages so that there are many practical applications for signal or image processing. In this paper, we pay attention to the sampling and reconstruction problem in spline subspaces. We improve lower bound of sampling set conditions in spline subspaces. Based on the improved explicit lower bound, a improved explicit convergence ratio of reconstruction algorithm is obtained. The improved convergence ratio occupies faster convergence rate than old one. At the end, some numerical examples are shown to validate our results.

Abstract:Combining the basic form of non-uniform α-B interpolation spline with its shape control mechanics,a new approach was produced to solving the problem of representing 2D sketches.Based on non-uniform α-B interpolation spline representation,algorithms of 2D sketch representation,generation,modification and scale were studied and brought up.This representation method is a unified solution,and the interpolation points can easily be computed,so very suitable for designers to coo￣perate under distributing network environments.The sketch scale is of the same advantage as vector map,and designers can(perform) shape control on the scaled sketch.

Abstract:Background: Curved modeling technology originated from the geometric lofting and design of aircrafts, automobiles and ships. The control points of the traditional B-spline mesh should be placed regularly in whole rows and columns. A T-spline surface is a B-spline surface that allows T-junctions. It can overcome the limitations of traditional B-mesh topology and has its own advantages in surface splicing, surface fining, surface simplification, etc. T-spline has wide application prospects in product modeling, art design, animation production, numerical control machining, volume data expression, and other aspects. Objective: The objective of this paper is to summarize the properties, algorithms, and applications of T-splines. It helps scholars in determining the research status of T-splines and in further exploring the theories related to the applications of T-splines. Methods: This paper reviews the theories on T-splines and their applications from four aspects. First, we discuss the development of the concept, properties, and algorithms of T-splines and the Tspline reconstruction. Then, we conducted an isogeometric analysis using T-splines. Next, we demonstrate the applications of T-splines in actual scenarios. Finally, we present a brief summary of the paper and expectations for the future. Results: The paper provides a brief introduction to the relevant papers on T-splines. The research on T-spline technology is currently active, and there are many studies on T-spline theories and applications. Among these, the spline theory on T-mesh has aroused widespread interest in engineering, especially in Computer-Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) and computer graphics. Conclusion: The T-spline surface is the most important new spline surface in the CADG field since the creation of the B-spline surface and non-uniform rational B-spline surface. Although the surface modeling technology based on the T-spline surface is developing rapidly, there are still some problems that need to be further studied.

Abstract:One crucial issue of multi-resolution surface representations is how to effectively record and reconstruct geometric details among surface levels. Standard multi-resolution techniques encode details directly as local displacements in the vertices, and may produce unplausible results when the base level endures large deformations. In this paper we propose an alternative detail representation and reconstruction scheme, based on local transformations on a per-triangle basis. While more storage is required, recording details as local transformations favors global coupling of geometric details and allows for large-scale surface manipulations. By modeling the scale components of the surface modifications as a set of deforming factors, we achieved detail-preserving reconstruction results naturally under very large deformations. Comprehensive experimental results verify the efficiency and robustness of our approach.

Abstract:The theory and methods of digital geometry processing has been a hot research area in computer graphics, as geometric models serves as the core data for 3D graphics applications. The purpose of this paper is to introduce some recent advances in digital geometry processing, particularly mesh fairing, surface parameterization and mesh editing, that heavily use differential geometry quantities. Some related concepts from differential geometry, such as normal, curvature, gradient, Laplacian and their counterparts on digital geometry are also reviewed for understanding the strength and weakness of various digital geometry processing methods.

Abstract:The existing methods for visualizing volumetric data are mostly based on piecewise linear models. And all kinds of analysis based on them have to be substituted by coarse interpolations. So both accuracy and reliability of the traditional framework for visualization and analysis of volumetric data are far from our needs of digging information implied in volumetric data fields. In this paper, we propose a novel framework based on a C 2-continuous seven-directional box spline, under which reconstruction is of high accuracy and differential computations relative to analysis based on the reconstruction model are accurate. We introduce a polynomial differential operator to improve the reconstruction accuracy. In order to settle the difficulty of evaluating upon the seven-directional box spline, we convert it into Bézier form and propose effective theories and algorithms of extracting iso-surfaces, critical points and curvatures. Plentiful of examples are also given in this paper to illustrate that the novel framework is suitable for analysis, the improved reconstruction method has high accuracy, and our algorithms are fast and stable.

Abstract:Curve fitting with splines is a fundamental problem in computer-aided design and engineering. However, how to choose the number of knots and how to place the knots in spline fitting remain a difficult issue. This paper presents a framework for computing knots (including the number and positions) in curve fitting based on a sparse optimization model. The framework consists of two steps: first, from a dense initial knot vector, a set of active knots is selected at which certain order derivative of the spline is discontinuous by solving a sparse optimization problem; second, we further remove redundant knots and adjust the positions of active knots to obtain the final knot vector. Our experiments show that the approximation spline curve obtained by our approach has less number of knots compared to existing methods. Particularly, when the data points are sampled dense enough from a spline, our algorithm can recover the ground truth knot vector and reproduce the spline.

Abstract:This paper introduces a kind of new wavelet radiosity method called multiresolution B-spline radiosity, which uses B-splines of different scales to represent radiosity distribution functions. A set of techniques and algorithms, such as function extrapolation, adaptive quadrature, scale adjustment and octree, are proposed to implement it. This method sets up hierarchical structures on surfaces, keeps radiosity distribution continuous at element boundaries, does not need postprocessing, and does not prevent the use of any surface whose parameter domain is rectilinear.

Abstract:Recently, the use of B-spline curves/surfaces to fit point clouds by iteratively repositioning the B-spline's control points on the basis of geometrical rules has gained in popularity because of its simplicity, scalability, and generality. We distinguish between two types of fitting, interpolation and approximation. Interpolation generates a B-spline surface that passes through the data points, whereas approximation generates a B-spline surface that passes near the data points, minimizing the deviation of the surface from the data points. For surface interpolation, the data points are assumed to be in grids, whereas for surface approximation the data points are assumed to be randomly distributed. In this paper, an iterative geometric interpolation method, as well as an approximation method, which is based on the framework of the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, is discussed. These two iterative methods are compared with standard fitting methods using some complex examples, and the advantages and shortcomings of our algorithms are discussed. Furthermore, we introduce two methods to accelerate the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, as well as a method to impose geometric constraints, such as reflectional symmetry, on the iterative geometric interpolation process, and a novel fairing method for non-uniform complex data points. Complex examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.
Surface modeling with polynomial splines over hierarchical T-meshes

Abstract:Computer graphics and computer-aided design communities prefer piecewise spline patches to represent surfaces. But keeping the smoothness between the adjacent patches is a challenging task. In this paper, we present a method for stitching several surface patches, which is a key step in complicated surface modeling, with polynomial splines over hierarchical T-meshes (PHT-spline for short). The method is simple and can be easily applied to complex surface modeling. With the method, spline surfaces can be constructed efficiently and adaptively to fit genus-zero meshes after their spherical parameterization is obtained, where only small sized linear systems of equations are involved.

Abstract:T-spline surface fitting from input triangular mesh is a common task in T-splines related CAD applications. One major objective to this problem is creating T-spline surface with fewer control points and higher accuracy. This paper proposes several effective approaches to improve fitting results. The proposed approaches include an incremental sampling strategy for robust initial fitting, a global effective re-parameterization algorithm called NUFR (non-uniform faithful re-parameterization) for a proper mesh parameterization, and a GA (genetic algorithm) based T-mesh knot structure optimization process for an optimal knot structure. The tradeoff between mesh simplicity and fitting accuracy can be adjusted with a few input parameters. Experiments on different models are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches. Compared with the classic adaptive fitting result, the result of the proposed algorithm has smaller RMS error. And typically, the number of control points will be reduced by about 30%.

Abstract:In the field of computer vision, extraction and integration of appropriate features on surface shapes play important role of recognition processes. As such features, surface curvatures have been widely used since they reflect essential properties of 3-D objects. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating surface curvatures by means of surface fitting to range images. Furthermore, a clustering method using a Mixture Probability Algorithm is proposed for image segmentation, in which the surface is classified into regions with similar curvatures. As the approximating surface, B-spline surface with controllable knots is chosen, which can represent arbitrary 3-D surface shapes by arranging optimal knots. In order to realize the optimal knots arrangement, a knot control strategy based on recursive knot insertions, deletions and transfers is developed. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been confirmed through experiments using synthetic images and real range images.

Abstract:We present an algorithm to compute best least-squares approximations of discrete real-valued functions by first-degree splines (broken lines) with free knots. We demonstrate that the algorithm delivers after a finite number of steps a (global) best approximation. The analysis is complemented by remarks on programming and by a number of numerical examples including applications from medicine (MBC, MIC).

Abstract:In this paper, a method for 3-D shapes modeling which has hierarchical structure is proposed. For representing 3-D surface shapes, 4th order non-uniform rational B-spline(NURBS) functions with controllable knots are employed as the surface model. Consequently, a multiresolution representation technique based on multiresolution wavelet transform can be implemented with the corresponding B-wavelets. The surface models at each resolution level are obtained by performing a decomposition algorithm, after the surface model at the highest level is estimated. In order to estimate the surface model as accurately as possible, a regularization problem is solved by an iterative algorithm. Through several experiments using real data of range images, the effectiveness of the proposed method has been confirmed.
