Abstract:The engine control parameters become more complex with the application of new technologies to improve efficiency and emissions. Different parameters have different effects on engine combustion and emissions, complicating the optimization process. To evaluate the effect degree of multiple parameters on engine performance, Taguchi design of experiment was employed based on L18 orthogonal array. The interactive effects were studied where engine speed, load, excess air ratio, E85 energy ratio, and premixed strategies as factors were designed at different levels. Indicated thermal efficiency (ITE), particle number (PN), and gaseous emissions as responses were discussed using the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and variance analysis. The optimum levels of these factors were determined for different responses. Low engine speed (1200 rpm) reached the highest ITE, as well as the lowest NOx, CO, and HC emissions. High engine load (10 bar IMEP) was conducive to purifying NOx, CO, and HC emissions, although ITE was sacrificed to avoid rough combustion. High excess air ratio (4.0) benefited ITE, NOx and HC emissions, while CO and PN increased. High E85 energy ratio reduced NOx and PN emissions, despite deteriorating CO and HC emissions. The early double-injection strategy improved ITE, NOx, HC, and PN emissions but increased CO emissions.
