Abstract:The effect of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on the pump–probe response of a nearly degenerate Λ system is investigated by taking into account the dephasing of the low-frequency coherence. It is found, in the case of small dephasing, that instead of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) at resonance, electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) can occur due to the effect of SGC. We also study the effect of relative phase between the two applied fields and find that EIA and EIT can transform mutually by adjusting the relative phase.

Abstract:We conduct theoretical studies on electromagnetically induced absorption via incoherent collisions in an inhomogeneously broadened ladder-type three-level system with the density-matrix approach. The effects of the collision-induced coherence decay rates as well as the probe laser field intensity on the probe field absorption are examined. It is shown that with the increase of the collisional decay rates in a moderate range, a narrow dip due to electromagnetically induced transparency superimposed on the Doppler-broadened absorption background can be turned into a narrow peak under the conditions that the probe field intensity is not very weak as compared to the pump field, which results from the enhancement of constructive interference and suppression of destructive interference between one-photon and multiphoton transition pathways. The physical origin of the collision-assisted electromagnetically induced absorption is analyzed with a power-series solution of the density-matrix equations.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum coherence effects of a closed transition F-e = 1 <----> F-g = 0 driven by transverse linearly polarized light field (with sigma(+/-) components) and probed by another transverse, linearly polarized light field. Owing to the competition of two-photon gain and single-photon absorption, the absorption spectrum is shown as a combination of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Mollow absorption spectrum (MAS). In the degenerate case, the MAS covers the EIT window at the pump-probe detuning centre. In the magnetic field, two single-photon absorption peaks inside the EIT windows appear when the drive Rabi frequency is smaller than the Zeeman splitting while, when the Rabi frequency is larger than the Zeeman splitting, we find four emission peaks due to the two-photon gain. A transition from positive to negative dispersion is obtained, which means a shift between the subluminal and superluminal group velocities.

Abstract:Constructive interference of atomic coherence leads to electromagnetically induced absorption, which is a new kind of coherent effects. In this paper we reveal that the coupling field linewidth inhibits electromagnetically induced absorption, by employing a four-level system in which three transitions are in N configuration and the middle one serves as a probe transition. This result is not in contradiction to the case of electromagnetically induced transparency where the coupling field linewidth gives rise to or increases absorption,and the linewidth still suppresses the coherence of systems.

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency in a three-level Lambda-type molecular system with nonzero permanent dipole moments is investigated. It is shown that in the (2+2)-transition processes, when the sign of d(21), the difference in permanent dipole moments of the probe transition, is positive, perfect electromagnetically induced transparency with steep normal dispersion could be obtained under specific conditions. In contrast, when the sign of d(21) is negative, surprisingly gain without inversion with steep anomalous dispersion could be attained.

Abstract:We investigate a four-level double-Lambda atomic scheme interacting with four laser fields, a weak probe field, a weak signal field and two driven fields, in a closed-loop configuration. We study the Kerr nonlinearity associated with cross-phase modulation based on electromagnetically induced transparency. Our results show, in this closed-loop system, that the strength of cross-phase modulation and two-photon absorption are dependent critically on the relative phase between the excitation paths. By choosing the parameters appropriately, large cross-phase modulation can be achieved within a wide transparency window, while two-photon absorption is cancelled completely. The strength of cross-phase modulation can be enhanced much more by decreasing the intensities of two driven fields.

Abstract:The steady-state behaviour for a Lambda-type, three-level atomic system has been analysed by taking into account the effect of the phase fluctuation. It is shown that, for a monochromatic driving field, even if the probe field is in resonance with the corresponding atomic transition, a large refraction index can still be generated; for a finite linewidth of the driving field, inversionless lasing and index enhancement tends to disappear. Furthermore, the linewidth prevents the transparency of the medium.

Abstract:The alteration of atomic absorption via quantum coherence is observed in the degenerate two-level atomic system. It is shown that when the detuning of coupling field equals to that of probe light, i.e. two-photon resonance, the reduction of atomic absorption via electromagnetically induced transparency occurs. However, when we tune the coupling field to two-photon off-resonance, the enhancement of absorption is obtained for the probe field. The influences of one-photon detuning and intensity of coupling field on absorption are also experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We theoretically study the transmission and reflection of the probe travelling wave in an electromagnetically induced absorption grating (EIG), which is created in a three-level Lambda-type atomic system when the coupling field is a standing wave. Using the system, we show that a photonic stop band can exist on one side away from the resonance point in ultracold atomic gas, while there is an enhanced absorption at resonance and small reflection around it in the thermal atomic gas. Because our method can deal with such two cases, it is helpful to further understand the effects of the Doppler effect on atomic coherence and interference.

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an inhomogenously broadened medium consisting of Λ-type three-level atoms has been analyzed. It is shown that the Λ system can induce a transparency of the medium when the probe laser and the coupling laser have the same frequency detunings (including zero). Across the EIT window, the radial variation of the strong coupling laser radiation may lead to electromagnetically induced focusing or defocusing of the weak probe laser at separate probe frequency detuning points.

Abstract:Recently Qu and Agarwal [Phys. Rev. A 22, 031802 (2013)] found a three-pathway electromagnetically induced absorption (TEIA) phenomenon within a mechanically coupled two-cavity system, where there exist a sharp EIA dip in the broad electromagnetically induced transparency peak in the transmission spectrum. In this work, we study the response of a probe light in a pair of directly coupled microcavities with one mechanical mode. We find that in addition to the sharp TEIA dip within a broad EIT window as found by Qu and Agarwal, three-pathway electromagnetically induced transparency (TEIT) within the broad EIT window could also exist under certain conditions. We give explicit physical explanations and detailed calculations. Our results provide a method for controlling transition between TEIA and TEIT in coupled optomechanical systems, and reveal the multiple pathways interference is versatile for controlling light.

Abstract:The Goos-Hanchen shift of the system composed by two cavity walls and an intracavity atomic sample is presented. The atomic sample is treated as a four-level double-Lambda system, driven by the two counterpropagating coupling fields. The probe field experiences the discontinuous refractive index variation and is reflected. Moreover, under the phase-matching condition, the four-wave mixing effect based on electromagnetically induced transparency can cause effective reflection. The Goos-Hanchen shifts appear in both situations and are carefully investigated in this article. We refer to the first one with the incident and reflected light having identical wavelength as the linear Goos-Hanchen shift, and the second one with the reflection wavelength determined by the phase-matching condition as the nonlinear Goos-Hanchen shift. The differences between the two kinds of shifts, such as the incident angle range, conditions for the shift peaks, and controllability, are discussed.
Optical-response properties in an atom-assisted optomechanical system with a mechanical pump

Abstract:We investigate the optical-response properties of a coherent-mechanical pumped optomechanical system (OMS) coupled to a Lambda-type three-level atomic ensemble. Due to the optomechanical and the cavity-atom couplings, the optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomena could both be observed from our proposal. In the presence of a coherent mechanical pump, we show that the OMIT behavior of the probe field exhibits a phase-dependent effect, leading to the switch from OMIT to optomechanically induced absorption or amplification, while the feature of EIT remains unchanged. The distinctly different effects of the mechanical pump on OMIT and EIT behavior assure us that the absorption (amplification) and transparency of the output probe field can be simultaneously observed. Moreover, a tunable switch from slow to fast light can also be realized by tuning the phase and amplitude of the mechanical pump. In particular, the presence of the atomic ensemble can further adjust the group delay, providing additional flexibility for achieving the tunable switch.
Efficient Reflection Via Four-Wave Mixing in a Doppler-free Electromagnetically-Induced-transparency Gas System

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the high-efficiency reflection of a probe field in Lambda-type three-level atoms of cesium vapor driven by two counterpropagating coupling fields. More than 60% of reflection efficiency is observed at the phase-matching angle. The underlying mechanism theoretically is investigated as the four-wave mixing is enhanced by the electromagnetically-induced transparency. Both of the two Doppler-free two-photon resonances (one for the probe and co-propagating fields, the other for the reflected and the counterpropagation fields) play an important role in satisfying the phase matching in the reflection direction. The phase compensation due to the anomalous dispersion and the decrease of effective absorption length in the atomic system allow the efficient reflection to be observed in a wide range of incident angles of the probe field and detunings of the coupling field.

Abstract:We investigate a quadratically coupled optomechanical cavity system filled with a two-level atomic medium. The output of the cavity field exhibits analogous electromagnetically induced transparency when the optomechanical system interacts with the coupling and probe fields, respectively. We show that the introduction of the atomic medium can enhance the fluctuation of the displacement of the membrane as well as its energy. With the increasing of the atomic number, the dip of the absorption becomes deep.

Abstract:An experimental work [W. J. Wan, Y. D. Chong, L. Ge, H. Noh, A. D. Stone, and H. Cao, Science 331, 889 (2011)] showed that a resonator that contains a loss medium instead of a gain medium enables coherent perfect absorption (CPA) by interference. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize such a CPA and coherent perfect transmission (CPT) as well as the switching between CPA and CPT in a cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) system by applying an external magnetic field. The proposed CPA and CPT scheme is based on the magnetically induced transparency (MIT) configuration, instead of the conventional electromagnetically induced transparency configuration, which offers a sensitive method to tune CPA and CPT and also is conducive to the flexible control of the CPA and CPT scheme. Under the linear and nonlinear excitation regimes, we derive the approximate analytical solutions of the cavity-output power and the CPA criteria of the CQED system, and find that the CPA can occur at different frequencies in both regimes. In the nonlinear excitation regime, the relationship between the cavity-output power and the cavity-input power can show a bistable characteristic by the control of the static magnetic field, and the CPA point is near the turning point of the cavity-input power on the bistable return hysteresis curve. Furthermore, the line shape and the threshold value for optical bistability can be flexibly controlled by varying the magnetic field under experimentally accessible conditions, thus the magnetic field can well tune the CPA. Also, we compare the analytical and numerical results of the cavity-output power in the nonlinear excitation regime, and they are in good agreement. Our results show that the CQED system based on the MIT configuration can be used as a perfect absorber or nearly perfect transmitter, which may have practical applications in optical logic and optical communication devices.

Abstract:In this paper we reveal that the constructive interference of atomic coherence on absorption leads to electromagnetically induced absorption, which is in sharp contrast to the case in which destructive interference of atomic coherence gives rise to electromagnetically induced transparency. A four-level atomic system is employed in which three transitions are in N configuration and the middle transition is used as a probe transition. In the dressed states representation the probe transition is split into four transitions that are coupled to each other. The coupling originates from the spontaneous emission of the atomic medium and the spontaneous transfer from excited state coherence to ground state coherence. The former leads to couplings between all transitions with the same sign and to the absorption reduction. The latter results in couplings, of which two terms have positive sign and another two have negative sign. It is due to the couplings with positive and negative signs that significant modification of the contribution of dressed coherence to absorption occurs, i.e., absorption inhibition is changed to absorption enhancement.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the phenomena of electromagnetically induced grating in a doppler-broadened Λ-type three-level atomic system with the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) effect enhanced by an incoherence pump. It is found that the model can effectively diffract a weak probe field into high-order direction. We attribute the enhancement of diffraction mainly to the quantum interference resulting from the cross coupling between the two decay pathways. The diffraction efficiency behaves phase and doppler broadening-dependent phenomena, and can be greatly modulated by the SGC effect. Compared to the counter-propagating case, the co-propagating setting is more suitable for the purpose considered in this paper due to the effectiveness of Doppler-free.

Abstract:Employing an intense laser field coupling to the degenerate two-level system of cesium 6 2S_ 1/2(F=4)- 6 2P_ 3/2(F′=5) transition in a cesium vapor cell, electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) has been demonstrated via probe absorption spectra, at the same time, electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of V-type three-level scheme has been demonstrated on the F=4-F′=3 and F=4-F′=4 transition frequency. The EIA is affected by the intensity and detuning of the coupling laser. By analyzing the effect of optical pumping between Zeeman sub-levels on the EIA and the coherent interactions between multiple degenerate two-level atoms, it is shown that the optical pumping affects the population of different Zeeman sub-levels and the number of the involved two-level atoms, the coherent time between the sub-levels is then changed and the linewidth and intensity of the EIA are affected accordingly.

Abstract:Plasmonic structures such as metal nanoparticles (MNPs) provide a promising way to explore and control light in a solid-state environment. Here, we study a hybrid system composed of a localized surface plasmon mode of a MNP interacting with a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) subject to a Faraday magnetic field. The MNP-QD system is driven by an externally applied probe laser field and then its scattering photons are detected in the far field. To this end, employing a full quantum optical model, we theoretically calculate and demonstrate the scattering spectrum of the system via a combination of analytical and numerical techniques with realistic parameters. It is found that the applied magnetic field can be utilized to efficiently regulate and control the scattering line shapes. In particular, a class of optical transparency is induced in the scattering spectrum of the plasmon-excition (plexcitonic) system that we refer to as magnetically induced plexcitonic transparency. At the same time, a sharp double-Fano resonance profile is generated in the presence of the magnetic field. The predicted features of the spectra have potential applications in designing sensitive on-chip devices.
