Abstract:Carbon nanotube is a kind of novel nano-material. The properties of novel carbon nanotubes modified electrodes permit an important decrease in the overvoltage for the redox of chemicals and a dramatic improvement in the reversibility of the redox behavior of biomolecules. The high surface area possessing abundant acidic sites is propitious to the immobilization of enzyme and promote electron transfer between redox center of enzyme and electrode surface, which will improve the sensitivity and stability of biosensor.

Abstract:Owning to the unique structure, the excellent physical and chemical properties, the superstrong mechanics performances and so on, carbon nanotubes had been attracting the interest of all over the world. As the basis of carbon nanotubes, single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) have the better potential prospect in many fields, such as electron nano-devices, single electron devices, energy storage materials and so on. In this paper, the recent developments in the synthesis of SWCNTs were reviewed briefly, which included arc discharge, laser ablation, chemical vapor deposition and so on. At the same time, the crucial factors for the growth of SWCNTs were discussed.

Abstract: Since their discovery, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been extensively investigated as essential platforms in constructing electrochemical biosensors. CNTs can be classified into two basic varieties: single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which are a single layer of graphene sheet rolled into cylindrical tubes, and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) comprised of multiple layers of concentric cylinders with a spacing of about 0.34 nm between the adjacent cyclinders (Fig. 7.1). The lengths of the nanotubes can range from several hundred nanometers to several micrometers, and the diameters from 0.2–2 nm for SWCNTs and from 2 to 100 nm for MWCNTs [1]. CNT synthesis techniques can be classified into three major categories: laser ablation, catalytic arc discharge, and chemical vapor deposition [2]. Due to the diameters being similar to or smaller than those of individual biomolecules, CNTs are expected to serve as high-performance electrical conduits for interfacing with biological systems.

Abstract:The past ten years' research into carbon nanotubes and their related materials was summarized in the Nanocarbon Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University. The floating catalytic method was used for synthesis of multiwalled carbon nanotubes, singlewalled carbon nanotubes, doublewalled carbon nanotubes and aligned carbon nanotube films. Characteristics of different carbon nanotubes were studied with respect to mechanics, electricity, composites, double layer capacitors, field emission, hydrogen storage and environmental protection. The results show that carbon nanotubes, with various mechanical, electric and adsorptive behavior, are potentially applicable to many fields.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are being noticed more and more by scientists because of their unique structure,properties and prospects of application. However,as prepared CNTs are usually accom-panied with carbonaceous and metallic impurity which influence some of these properties and restrict cor- responding applications,purification of CNTs is essential. In this paper,comprehensive purification methods,which are based on analyzing the characteristics of physical-based purification and chemical oxidation method,are summarized in detail. The mechanical,field emission,electromagnetic properties of CNTs and progress in the relevant fields are also introduced.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube,graphene,and their composite materials have been employed to prepare electrodes by in situ polymerization,solution mixing,codeposition,melt mixing,etc.The prepared electrodes have been used as the detection electrodes of capillary electrophoresis and microfluidic chips for the rapid determination of the bioactive constituents in traditional Chinese medicines.In comparison with conventional metal and carbon electrodes,the sensitivity and anti-passivation capability of the novel electrodes have been significantly improved,indicating promise for the analysis of traditional Chinese medicines.

They exhibit extraordinary field emission properties because of their high electrical conductivity, their high aspect ratio "whisker-like" shape for optimum geometrical field enhancement, and remarkable thermal stability. Abstract:Recently, carbon nanomaterials have received great interest because of their unique mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties. Especially, some kinds of novel carbon materials including carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, and graphene with large specific area, high conductivity, and good biocompatibility become research focus. These novel carbon nanomaterials have been applied in many fields due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Especially, carbon nanomaterials have shown their unique advantages in electrochemical field. This paper mainly review the application of carbon nanomaterials to electrochemistry including biosensor, supercapacitor, and fuel cell. Carbon nanomaterials have an important role in bioelectrochemical catalytic reaction due to that carbon nanomaterials have high specific area and excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, it can improve the electron transfer rate of enzyme. The biosensors based carbon nanomaterials have high sensitivity, broad linear range, and good stability and reproducibility. Carbon nanomaterial is the earlist and the best one in the supercapacitor electrode, materials. The supercapacitor prepared by carbon nanomaterials has good cycle stability. The specific capacitance can be enhanced through the combination of carbon nanomaterials and pseudo-capacitors electrode materials. Carbon nanomaterials can act as the catalysts of fuel cell as well. It can improve the energy density, fuel utilization, and the ability to resist poisoning.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have extensively been used for electrochemical and optical biosensing due to the unique mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties. This review introduces two functionalization categories, noncovalent interaction along the CNTs sidewalls via physical adsorption or entrapment and covalent binding via carboxylate chemistry or nonselective attack of nanotube sidewalls by highly reactive species and gives an overview on the functionalized CNTs-based biosensing methodologies for DNA, antigen-antibody, cells, and other biological molecules. Furthermore, the in vivo near-IR fluorescence biosensing application of CNTs with high photostability and efficiency is discussed. Finally, field-effect transistors based on semiconductor CNTs are also summarized for ultrasensitive detection. Abstract:The utilization of nanomaterials in the biosensor field has garnered substantial attention in recent years. Initially, the emphasis was on enhancing the sensor current rather than material interactions. However, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have gained prominence in glucose sensors due to their high aspect ratio, remarkable chemical stability, and notable optical and electronic attributes. The diverse nanostructures and metal surface designs of CNTs, coupled with their exceptional physical and chemical properties, have led to diverse applications in electrochemical glucose sensor research. Substantial progress has been achieved, particularly in constructing flexible interfaces based on CNTs. This review focuses on CNT-based sensor design, manufacturing advancements, material synergy effects, and minimally invasive/noninvasive glucose monitoring devices. The review also discusses the trend toward simultaneous detection of multiple markers in glucose sensors and the pivotal role played by CNTs in this trend. Furthermore, the latest applications of CNTs in electrochemical glucose sensors are explored, accompanied by an overview of the current status, challenges, and future prospects of CNT-based sensors and their potential applications.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely studied and used for the construction of electrochemical biosensors owing to their small size, cylindrical shape, large surface-to-volume ratio, high conductivity and good biocompatibility. In electrochemical biosensors, CNTs serve a dual purpose: they act as immobilization support for biomolecules as well as provide the necessary electrical conductivity for electrochemical transduction. The ability of a recognition molecule to detect the analyte is highly dependent on the type of immobilization used for the attachment of the biomolecule to the CNT surface, a process also known as biofunctionalization. A variety of biofunctionalization methods have been studied and reported including physical adsorption, covalent cross-linking, polymer encapsulation etc. Each method carries its own advantages and limitations. In this review we provide a comprehensive review of non-covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes with a variety of biomolecules for the development of electrochemical biosensors. This method of immobilization is increasingly being used in bioelectrode development using enzymes for biosensor and biofuel cell applications.

Abstract:The challenge of heavy metal detection for environmental, industrial and medical purposes has led to the development of many analytical techniques. Stripping voltammetry is a very sensitive electrochemical method and has been widely used for heavy metal detection. Carbon nanotubes, a well‐studied carbon material with physical and chemical properties suited for electrode material is commonly employed for sensitive and selective metal detection in electrochemistry. This article reviews the recent (2011–2016) applications of carbon nanotubes as an electrode or electrode surface modifier for heavy metals detection with stripping voltammetry.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes used for constructing biosensor was described for the first time. Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) functionalized with carboxylic acid groups were used to immobilize glucose oxidase forming a glucose biosensor. The biosensor response can be determined by amperometric method at a low applied potential (0.40 V).

Abstract:An easily manipulative approach was presented to fabricate electrodes using free-standing single-walled carbon nanotube （SWCNT） films grown directly by chemical vapor deposition.Electrochemical properties of the electrodes were investigated.In comparison with the post-deposited SWCNT papers,the directly grown SWCNT film electrodes manifested enhanced electrochemical properties and sensitivity of sensors as well as excellent electrocatalytic activities.A transition from macroelectrode to nanoelectrode behaviours was observed with the increase of scan rate.The heat treatment of the SWCNT film electrodes increased the current signals of electrochemical analyser and background current,because the heat-treatment of the SWCNTs in air could create more oxide defects on the walls of the SWCNTs and make the surfaces of SWCNTs more hydrophilic.The excellent electrochemical properties of the directly grown and heat-treated free-standing SWCNT film electrodes show the potentials in biological and electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes are unique tubular structures of nanometer diameter and large length/diameter ratio. The nanotubes may consist of one up to tens and hundreds of concentric shells of carbons with adjacent shells separation of ∼0.34nm. The carbon network of the shells is closely related to the honeycomb arrangement of the carbon atoms in the graphite sheets. The amazing mechanical and electronic properties of the nanotubes stem in their quasi-one-dimensional (1D) structure and the graphite-like arrangement of the carbon atoms in the shells. Thus, the nanotubes have high Young’s modulus and tensile strength, which makes them preferable for composite materials with improved mechanical properties. The nanotubes can be metallic or semiconducting depending on their structural parameters. This opens the ways for application of the nanotubes as central elements in electronic devices including field-effect transistors (FET), single-electron transistors and rectifying diodes. Possibilities for using of the nanotubes as high-capacity hydrogen storage media were also considered. This report is intended to summarize some of the major achievements in the field of the carbon nanotube research both experimental and theoretical in connection with the possible industrial applications of the nanotubes.
Field Emission and Their Application in Ionization Gauge of CNTs-TiO2 Films

Abstract:We present a simple rubbing method for fabricating films of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) and CNTs-based composite materials.The CNT films and CNTs-TiO2 films are fabricated utilizing this method.The field emission properties of the films are systematically studied in comparison experiments.It is found that,with an optimum proportion(7%~10%)(wt.) of TiO2 nanoparticles mixed with the CNTs,the field emission properties of the composite films could be dramatically improved compared with simplex CNT films,in lowering turn-on field to 1.3 V/μm(CNT films: 2.5 V/μm) and threshold-field to 3.1 V/μm(CNT films: 4 V/μm),increasing the field emission uniformity and stability.The applicability of CNTs-TiO2 films to cold electron sources for ionization gauges is investigated.The gauges exhibit good measurement of linearity in the pressure range of 2×10-2~3×10-5 Pa,and the sensitivity is about 3.36 Pa-1.The gauges also have the advantages of small volume and low power consumption.
