Abstract:An asymmetric 5-endo chloroetherification of homoallylic alcohols is successfully developed that employs an easily available quaternary ammonium salt derived from cinchonine as a conventional organocatalyst. This approach provides ready access to β-chlorotetrahydrofurans in high enantioselectivities.

Abstract:A family of ferrocenyl amino alcohols (14 examples) has been prepared from the corresponding planar chiral ketones and evaluated as a new class of chiral ligands for asymmetric ethyl‐ and phenylzinc additions to aldehydes. The highly enantioselective synthesis of these ligands is facile, scalable, robust and relies on the use of cheaply available starting materials. Asymmetric ethyl additions proceeded smoothly at ambient temperature, with reaction times as short as 1 hour furnishing the desired products in up to 90% yield and 99% ee. The corresponding phenyl additions afforded products in up to 81% yield and 88% ee. The observed stereochemical outcome for the addition of diethylzinc was rationalized and the key proposed transition state was supported by an analysis of the X‐ray structures of a series of amino alcohol ligands.

Abstract:A series of chiral tridentate ligands derived from readily available enantiopure l-proline were designed and synthesized. The ligands together with Cu(OAc)2 were successfully used in asymmetric Henry reactions. Various structurally divergent aldehydes and nitromethane were converted into versatile β-nitro alcohols in MeOH at room temperature with very good yields (up to 85%) and enantioselectivities (up to 86%).

Abstract:Novel chiral bis(oxazoline) ligands bearing dibenzo[a,c]cycloheptadiene and a dihydroxy group have been synthesized and their application in the catalytic asymmetric addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes investigated. Abstract:A novel procedure for selective direct N,N-alkylation of the chiral Betti base was developed, and a new family of chiral ligands, (S)-1-(α-cycloaminobenzyl)-2-naphthols, were prepared. The ligands with five- and six-membered cyclic amines showed highly efficient asymmetric induction in the addition of diethylzinc to aromatic aldehydes in 93–96% yields and 91–99% ee.

Abstract:Newly synthesized polymer-supported chiral amino alcohol catalysts 5a and 5b have been proved to be effective for the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes, affording the corresponding sec-alcohols in moderate enantiomeric excesses with good to excellent yields. The recycled catalyst could be reused in the same reaction without significant deterioration in performance.

Abstract:Experimental studies on the modification of (1R,2S)-1,2-diphenyl-2-aminoethanol, which is used to promote the alkylation of N-diphenylphosphinoyl benzalimine with diethylzinc, revealed that N-monosubstituted amino alcohols exhibited higher enantioselectivities than their N,N-disubstituted counterparts and imino alcohols. Application of the optimal chiral ligand 3c to activate the reaction of N-diphenylphosphinoyl arylimines with diethylzinc and dibutylzinc resulted in excellent enantiomeric selectivities of up to 98% ee. The origin of the experimentally observed enantioselectivities was revealed by density functional calculations (B3LYP/6-31G*) on the transition structures of several model reactions.

Abstract:Five novel chiral ferrocenyl amino alcohols were prepared from natural amino acids and used as catalysts in the asymmetric reduction of prochiral ketones with NaBH4/I2 combination.The incorporation of the ferrocenyl moiety into the molecule of the chiral amino alcohols greatly improved their enantioselectivity in the catalysis.The optically active secondary alcohols were obt5ained in moderate to good enantiomeric excesses and high chemical yields.

Abstract:Metal-catalyzed enantioselective allylation, which involves the substitution of allylic metal intermediates with a diverse range of different nucleophiles or S(N)2'-type allylic substitution, leads to the formation of C-H, -C, -O, -N, -S, and other bonds with very high levels of asymmetric induction. The reaction may tolerate a broad range of functional groups and has been applied successfully to the synthesis of many natural products and new chiral compounds.

Abstract:Catalytic enantioselective conjugate additions with easily accessible alkenylboronic acid pinacol esters as nucleophiles promoted by chiral copper complexes of N-heterocyclic carbenes are presented. These processes constitute an unprecedented instance of conjugate additions of a variety of functionalized alkenyl groups and afford desired products that are otherwise difficult to access in up to 98% yield and 99.5:0.5 enantiomeric ratio. The origins of ligand-controlled enantioselectivity are elucidated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:(S)-(−)-2-Amino-1,1,3-triphenylpropanol 3c, which is readily available from l-Phe, was found to be effective in catalyzing the addition reaction of an alkynylzinc reagent to aromatic ketones with up to 80% ee of the thus produced chiral tertiary propargylic alcohols. Unlike previous reports, 3c does not require the use of an additional central metal (other than zinc itself) and the pre-preparation of an alkynylzinc. This has greatly simplified the experimental procedure for this reaction.

Abstract:Ferric chloride hexahydrate was shown to be an efficient catalyst for the conjugate addition of 2,3-allenoates with alkyl-, aryl-, or vinyl-Grignard reagents to synthesize polysubstituted beta,gamma-unsaturated alkenoates with high regio- and stereoselectivity. The in situ formed magnesium dienolate may readily react with different electrophilic reagents under different reaction conditions with or without a catalyst to construct an allylic quaternary carbon at the alpha-position of the ester group and a stereocontrol able retention of the carbon-carbon double bond.

Abstract:Four analogous binaphthyl compounds (R)-3a-3d containing (R)-3,3'-bis(2-pyridyl) groups were synthesized by the conjugation of (R)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl-3,3'-diboronic acid [(R)-2] with 2-bromopyridine, 2-bromo-5-methylpyridine, 2-chloro-4-fluoropyridine and 2-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine via Pd-catalyzed Suzuki reactions, respectively. The application of the four chiral ligands in combination with Et2Zn and Ti(Oi-Pr)(4) to the asymmetric addition of phenylacetylene to various aldehydes has been studied. The results show that (R)-3a and (R)-3b are not good catalysts for the alkynylzinc addition to aldehydes, (R)-3d shows good enantioselectivity only for the alkynylzinc addition to aliphatic aldehydes, and (R)-3c exhibits excellent enantioselectivity for phenylethynylzinc addition to both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes. All the four chiral ligands produced the opposite configuration of the propargylic alcohols to that of the chiral ligands.

Abstract:A new sulfonamide ligand based on l-tartaric acid was synthesized and was employed as a chiral ligand in the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes, giving rise to the best enantiomeric excess up to 83% with 5mol% of catalyst loading. Moreover, the addition of diethylzinc to ketones can also be achieved with good to excellent enantioselectivities by employing 7mol% of the catalyst under mild conditions.

Abstract:A new linear chiral polymer ligand was synthesized by the polymerization of (S)-5, 5'-dibromo-6, 6,-di(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-2, 2'-binaphthol (S-M-l) with (S)-5, 5 '-diethynyl-6, 6'-dibutyl-2, 2'-dibutoxy-l, 1'-binaphthyl (S-M-2) via Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira reaction. The application of the chiral polymer ligand in the asymmetric addition of Et2Zn to various aromatic aldehydes had been studied. The results showed that this kind of soluble chiral polybinaphthols ligand in combination with Ti(OiPr)4 could exhibit good reactivity and enantioselectivity for the asymmetric addition of Et2Zn to aromatic aldehydes. Moreover, the chiral polymer ligand showed superior enantioselectivity over the model compound S-l and could keep similar reactivity as well as enantioselectivity after ten recycles.
