Abstract:Novel C-2-symmetrical bissulfonamide ligands were easily prepared in three simple steps and applied in the enantioselective addition of alkynylzinc reagents to aldehydes. Compound 7a was found to be an outstanding ligand for this reaction. When the catalyst loading, 4 mol % of 7a, was used, high enantioselectivity with an ee value up to 97% was achieved under very mild conditions. When the amount of ligand 7a was lowered to 2 mol %, excellent levels of enantiocontrol up to 95% ee were still achieved. So far the most economic catalyst system was developed for the addition of terminal alkynes to aromatic aldehydes in terms of ligand loading and enantioselectivity. Moreover, ligand 7a in combination with Ti(O-i-Pr)(4) was found to be effective in promoting the addition reaction of an alkynylzinc reagent to unactivated simple ketones under very mild conditions. The corresponding chiral tertiary propargylic alcohols were obtained with enantiomeric excesses of up to 81%.

Abstract:Novel chiral bis(oxazoline) ligands bearing dibenzo[a,c]cycloheptadiene and a dihydroxy group have been synthesized and their application in the catalytic asymmetric addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes investigated. Abstract:A series of chiral tridentate ligands derived from readily available enantiopure l-proline were designed and synthesized. The ligands together with Cu(OAc)2 were successfully used in asymmetric Henry reactions. Various structurally divergent aldehydes and nitromethane were converted into versatile β-nitro alcohols in MeOH at room temperature with very good yields (up to 85%) and enantioselectivities (up to 86%).

Abstract:A novel procedure for selective direct N,N-alkylation of the chiral Betti base was developed, and a new family of chiral ligands, (S)-1-(α-cycloaminobenzyl)-2-naphthols, were prepared. The ligands with five- and six-membered cyclic amines showed highly efficient asymmetric induction in the addition of diethylzinc to aromatic aldehydes in 93–96% yields and 91–99% ee.

Abstract:A new sulfonamide ligand based on l-tartaric acid was synthesized and was employed as a chiral ligand in the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes, giving rise to the best enantiomeric excess up to 83% with 5mol% of catalyst loading. Moreover, the addition of diethylzinc to ketones can also be achieved with good to excellent enantioselectivities by employing 7mol% of the catalyst under mild conditions.

Abstract:A dimeric salen ligand derived from L-tartaric acid was synthesized through linking two salen units with 1,6-dibromohexane. The corresponding Ti complex was proved to be an efficient catalyst for asymmetric addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to aldehydes, providing the corresponding optically active trimethylsilyl ether of cyanohydrins with moderate to good enantiomeric excesses and excellent yields under relatively low catalyst loading condition.

Abstract:Four analogous binaphthyl compounds (R)-3a-3d containing (R)-3,3'-bis(2-pyridyl) groups were synthesized by the conjugation of (R)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl-3,3'-diboronic acid [(R)-2] with 2-bromopyridine, 2-bromo-5-methylpyridine, 2-chloro-4-fluoropyridine and 2-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine via Pd-catalyzed Suzuki reactions, respectively. The application of the four chiral ligands in combination with Et2Zn and Ti(Oi-Pr)(4) to the asymmetric addition of phenylacetylene to various aldehydes has been studied. The results show that (R)-3a and (R)-3b are not good catalysts for the alkynylzinc addition to aldehydes, (R)-3d shows good enantioselectivity only for the alkynylzinc addition to aliphatic aldehydes, and (R)-3c exhibits excellent enantioselectivity for phenylethynylzinc addition to both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes. All the four chiral ligands produced the opposite configuration of the propargylic alcohols to that of the chiral ligands.

Abstract:Catalytic enantioselective conjugate additions with easily accessible alkenylboronic acid pinacol esters as nucleophiles promoted by chiral copper complexes of N-heterocyclic carbenes are presented. These processes constitute an unprecedented instance of conjugate additions of a variety of functionalized alkenyl groups and afford desired products that are otherwise difficult to access in up to 98% yield and 99.5:0.5 enantiomeric ratio. The origins of ligand-controlled enantioselectivity are elucidated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:A series of novel thio-derivatives of d-glucosamine has been synthesized using double inversion procedures at the C3 atom. New compounds were applied as ligands for the diethylzinc addition to benzaldehyde and the products of the addition were obtained with a low to good enantiomeric ratio. The direction and the level of the asymmetric induction were highly dependent on the type of protecting groups on the nitrogen and sulfur atoms.

Abstract:A variety of camphor sulfonamide ligands were synthesized and employed in the addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. The influences of substitution patterns, electronic property, reaction substrates, reaction solvents and temperature were studied. After optimization, the best reaction condition was determined and applied to this addition reaction, giving the corresponding products in high yields with up to 83% ee.

Abstract:The catalytic enantioselective alkynylation of isatins, catalyzed by a Zn(OCOCF3)(2)/chiral bis(sulfonamide)-diamine (BSDA) catalyst under mild condition, has been developed. The desired chiral 3-alkynyl-3-hydroxy-2-oxindoles were obtained in moderate to excellent yields (up to 96%) and good to excellent enantioselectivites (up to 97% ee). The reaction is broad in scope with respect to aryl-substituted terminal alkynes and substituted isatins.

Abstract:A new and efficient route for synthesis of enantiomerically pure biisoindoline and its isomer based on the diaza-Cope rearrangement reaction with chiral 1,2-bis(2-hydroxylphenyl)-1,2-diaminoethane as starting material has been developed. The newly prepared biisoindoline was employed as a chiral ligand in the Ni(II)-catalyzed enantioselective Michael addition of malonates to conjugated nitroalkenes, and good to excellent enantioselectivities were obtained.

Abstract:A series of C2-symmetric and asymmetric chiral thiourea derivatives were synthesized from commercial l-phenylalanine. All of the new compounds have been fully characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS spectra and elemental analyses. The chiral thioureas were used as chiral ligands in the catalytic enantioselective ethylation of aldehydes with diethylzinc, the corresponding sec-alcohols were gained with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 87.1% ee) and high yields (up to 76.7%) after the conditions were optimized.
