Abstract:We study unparametrized conformal circles, or called conformal geodesics, study diffeomorphisms mapping conformal circles to conformal circles in pseudo-Riemannian conformal manifolds. We show that such local diffeomorphisms are conformal local diffeomorphisms. Our result extends the result of Yano and Tomonaga. We also present a holographic interpretation for our result on Poincaré-Einstein manifolds. The proofs take suitable variations of conformal circles.

Abstract:A Riemannian manifold (M n ,g) is associated with a Schouten (0,2)-tensor Cg which is a naturally defined Codazzi tensor in case (M n ,g) is a locally conformally flat Riemannian manifold. In this paper, we study the Riemannian functional F k [g] = f M σ k (C g )dvol g defined on M 1 = {g E M|Vol(g) = 1}, where M is the space of smooth Riemannian metrics on a compact smooth manifold M and {σ k (C g ), 1 5 and a conformally flat metric g is a critical point of F 2 |M 1 with F 2 [g] > 0, then g must have constant sectional curvature. This is a generalization of Gursky and Viaclovsky's very recent theorem that the critical point of F 2 |M 1 with F 2 [g] > 0 characterized the three-dimensional space forms.

Abstract:A nontrivial conformal vector field ω on an m-dimensional connected Riemannian manifold Mm,g has naturally associated with it the conformal potential θ, a smooth function on Mm, and a skew-symmetric tensor T of type (1,1) called the associated tensor. There is a third entity, namely the vector field Tω, called the orthogonal reflection field, and in this article, we study the impact of the condition that commutator ω,Tω=0; this condition that we refer to as the orthogonal reflection field is commutative. As a natural impact of this condition, we see the existence of a smooth function ρ on Mm such that ∇θ=ρω; this function ρ is called the proportionality function. First, we show that an m-dimensional compact and connected Riemannian manifold Mm,g admits a nontrivial conformal vector field ω with a commuting orthogonal reflection Tω and constant proportionality function ρ if and only if Mm,g is isometric to the sphere Sm(c) of constant curvature c. Secondly, we find three more characterizations of the sphere and two characterizations of a Euclidean space using these ideas. Finally, we provide a condition for a conformal vector field on a compact Riemannian manifold to be closed.

Abstract:We study geometrically finite one-dimensional mappings. These are a subspace of $C^{1+\alpha}$ one-dimensional mappings with finitely many, critically finite critical points. We study some geometric properties of a mapping in this subspace. We prove that this subspace is closed under quasisymmetrical conjugacy. We also prove that if two mappings in this subspace are topologically conjugate, they are then quasisymmetrically conjugate. We show some examples of geometrically finite one-dimensional mappings.

Abstract:The real Jacobian conjecture claims that if $F=\left(f^1,\ldots,f^n\right):\mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$ is a polynomial map such that $\det DF$ is nowhere zero, then $F$ is a global injective. The first part is to study the two-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture via the method of the qualitative theory of dynamical systems. By Bendixson compactification, an induced polynomial differential system can be obtained from the Hamiltonian system associated to polynomial map $F$. We prove that the following statements are equivalent: (A) $F$ is a global injective; (B) the origin of induced system is a center; (C) the origin of induced system is a monodromic singular point; (D) the origin of induced system has no hyperbolic sectors; (E) induced system has a $C^k$ first integral with an isolated minimun at the origin and $k\in\mathbb{N}^{+}\cup\{\infty\}$. Moreover, applying the above results we present a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of the two-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture, which is an algebraic criterion. By definition a criterion function, $F$ is a global injective if and only if the limit of criterion function is infinite as $\left|x\right|+\left|y\right|$ tends to infinity. This algebraic criterion improves the main result of Braun et al [J. Differential Equations {\bf 260} (2016) 5250-5258]. In the second part, the necessary and sufficient conditions on the $n$-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture is obtained. Using the tool from the nonlinear functional analysis, $F$ is a global injective if and only if $\parallel F\left(\mathbf{x}\right)\parallel$ approaches to infinite as $\parallel\mathbf{x}\parallel\rightarrow\infty$, which is a generalization of the above algebraic criterion. As an application, we give an alternate proof of the Cima's result on the $n$-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture [Nonlinear Anal. {\bf 26} (1996) 877-885].

Abstract:In this paper, we establish six necessary and sufficient conditions for a homeomorphism of onto itself to be strongly quasisymmetric. These conditions are quantitative in terms of conformal moduli of disjoint continua as well as the geometric modulus, which was recently introduced by Tukia and Väisälä. Note that all of them are equivalent to bilipschitz continuity with parameters depending also on two fixed points. As an application, we obtain several quantitative characterizations for a homeomorphism of the Riemann sphere onto itself to be strongly quasimöbius.

Abstract:We prove a localization theorem for exotic diffeomorphisms, showing that every diffeomorphism of a compact simply-connected 4-manifold that is isotopic to the identity after stabilizing with one copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, is smoothly isotopic to a diffeomorphism that is supported on a contractible submanifold. For those that require more than one copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, we prove that the diffeomorphism can be isotoped to one that is supported in a submanifold homotopy equivalent to a wedge of 2-spheres, with null-homotopic inclusion map. We investigate the implications of these results by applying them to known exotic diffeomorphisms.

On a Question of J.D. Meiss Concerning Anti-integrability for Three-Dimensional Quadratic Diffeomorphisms

Abstract:Three-dimensional quadratic diffeomorphisms with quadratic inverse generically have five independent parameters. When some parameters approach infinity, the diffeomorphisms may exhibit the so-called anti-integrability in the traditional sense of Aubry and Abramovici. That is, the dynamics of the diffeomorphisms reduce to symbolic dynamics on finite number of symbols. However, the diffeomorphisms may reduce to quadratic correspondences when parameters approach infinity, and the traditional anti-integrable limit does not deal with this situation. Meiss asked what about an anti-integrable limit for it. A remarkable progress was achieved very recently by Meiss himself and his student Hampton [SIAM J. Appl. Dyn. Syst. 21 (2022), pp. 650--675]. Under some conditions, using the contraction mapping theorem, they showed there is a bijection between the anti-integrable states and the sequences of branches of a quadratic correspondence. They also showed that an anti-integrable state can be continued to a genuine orbit of the three-dimensional diffeomorphism. This paper aims to contribute the progress, by means of the implicit function theorem. We shall show that the bijection indeed is a topological conjugacy and establish the uniform hyperbolicity of the continued genuine orbits.

Dualities in Comparison Theorems and Bundle-Valued Generalized Harmonic Forms on Noncompact Manifolds

Abstract:We observe, utilize dualities in differential equations and differential inequalities, dualities between comparison theorems in differential equations, and obtain dualities in "swapping" comparison theorems in differential equations. These dualities generate comparison theorems on differential equations of mixed types I and II and lead to comparison theorems in Riemannian geometry with analytic, geometric, P.D.E.'s and physical applications. In particular, we prove Hessian comparison theorems and Laplacian comparison theorem under varied radial Ricci curvature or radial curvature assumptions, generalizing and extending the work of Han-Li-Ren-Wei, and Wei. We also extend the notion of function or differential form growth to bundle-valued differential form growth of various types and discuss their interrelationship. These provide tools in extending the notion, integrability and decomposition of generalized harmonic forms to those of bundle-valued generalized harmonic forms, introducing Condition W for bundle-valued differential forms, and proving duality theorem and unity theorem, generalizing the work of Andreotti and Vesentini, and Wei. We then apply Hessian and Laplacian comparison theorems to obtain comparison theorems in mean curvature, generalized sharp Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg type inequalities, embedding theorem for weighted Sobolev spaces, geometric differential-integral inequalities, generalized sharp Hardy type inequalities on Riemannian manifolds, monotonicity formulas and vanishing theorems for differential forms of degree $k$ with values in vector bundles, such as $F$-Yang Mills fields (when $F$ is the identity map, they are Yang-Mills fields), generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld fields on manifolds, Liouville type theorems for $F$-harmonic maps, and Dirichlet problems on starlike domains for vector bundle valued differential $1$-forms and $F$-harminic maps, etc.

Abstract:We give sufficient conditions for a $ C^1_c $-local diffeomorphism between Fréchet spaces to be a global one. We extend the Clarke's theory of generalized gradients to the more general setting of Fréchet spaces. As a consequence, we define the Chang Palais-Smale condition for Lipschitz functions and show that a function which is bounded below and satisfies the Chang Palais-Smale condition at all levels is coercive. We prove a version of the mountain pass theorem for Lipschitz maps in the Fréchet setting and show that along with the Chang Palais-Smale condition we can obtain a global diffeomorphism theorem.

Abstract:The author gives an alternative and simple proof of the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for wave maps from the (1+2)-dimensional Minkowski space to an arbitrary compact smooth Riemannian manifold without boundary, for arbitrary smooth, radially symmetric data. The author can also treat non-compact manifold under some additional assumptions which generalize the existing ones.

Abstract:One way to better understand the smooth mapping class group of the 4-sphere would be to give a list of generators in the form of explicit diffeomorphisms supported in neighborhoods of submanifolds, in analogy with Dehn twists on surfaces. As a step in this direction, we describe a surjective homomorphism from a group associated to loops of 2-spheres in $S^2 \times S^2$'s onto this smooth mapping class group, discuss two natural and in some sense complementary subgroups of the domain of this homomomorphism, show that one is in the kernel, and give generators as above for the image of the other. These generators are described as twists along Montesinos twins, i.e. pairs of embedded 2-spheres in the 4-sphere intersecting transversely at two points.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, the first author and Y. Wang proved that $f\colon \rn\to\rn$ (n ≥ 2) is a Möbius transformation if and only if f is a non-degenerate circle-preserving map. In this paper, we will further the result to show that f is a Möbius transformation if and only if f is a non-degenerate r–dimensional sphere-preserving map. The versions for the Euclidean and hyperbolic cases are also obtained. These results make no surjectivity or injectivity or even continuity assumptions on f. Moreover, certain degenerate sphere-preserving maps are given, which completes the characterizations of sphere-preserving maps.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the normal form problem of a commutative family of germs of diffeomorphisms at a fixed point, say the origin, of $\mathbb{K}^n$ ($\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{C}$ or $\mathbb{R}$). We define a notion of integrability of such a family. We give sufficient conditions which ensure that such an integrable family can be transformed into a normal form by an analytic (resp. a smooth) transformation if the initial diffeomorphisms are analytic (resp. smooth).

Abstract:We solve the equivalence problem for rank 3 completely nonholonomic vector distributions with 6-dimensional square on a smooth manifold of arbitrary dimension n under very mild genericity conditions. The main idea is to consider the projectivization of the annihilator of a given 3-dimensional distribution. It is naturally foliated by characteristic curves, which are also called the abnormal extremals of the distribution. The dynamics of vertical fibers along characteristic curves defines certain curves of flags of isotropic and coisotropic subspaces in a linear symplectic space. The problem of equivalence of distributions can be essentially reduced to the differential geometry of such curves. The class of all 3-distributions under consideration is split into a finite number of subclasses according to the Young diagram of their flags. The local geometry of distributions can be recovered from the properties of the symmetry group of so-called flat curves of flags associated with this Young diagram. In each subclass we describe the flat distribution and construct a canonical frame for any other distribution. It turns out that for n>6 in the most nontrivial case the symmetry algebra of the flat distribution can be described in terms of rational normal curves (their secants and tangential developables) in projective spaces and its dimension grows exponentially with respect to n.

Abstract:A class of planar diffeomorphims is formulated, with infinitely many coexisting Smale horseshoes, where the Lebesgue measure of the parameters with such strange dynamics is infinite. On each horseshoe, there exists a uniformly hyperbolic invariant set, on which the map is topologically conjugate to the two-sided full-shift on two symbols. Moreover, the topological entropy is infinite in certain parameter regions.

Abstract:General covariance is the cornerstone of Einstein's General Relativity (GR) and implies that any two metrics related by diffeomorphisms are physically equivalent. There are, however, many examples pointing to the fact that this strict statement of general covariance needs refinement. There are a very special (measure-zero) subset of diffeomorphisms, the residual diffeomrphisms, to which one can associate well-defined conserved charges. This would hence render these diffeomorphic geometries physically distinct. We discuss that these symmetries may be appropriately called "symplectic symmetries". Existence of residual diffeomorphisms and sympelctic symmetries can be a quite general feature and not limited to the examples discussed so far in the literature. We propose that, in the context of black holes, these diffeomorphic, but distinct, geometries may be viewed as "symplectic soft hair" on black holes. We comment on how this may remedy black hole microstate problem, which in this context are dubbed as "horizon fluffs".
