Abstract:In this paper, we give quantum algorithms for two fundamental computation problems: solving polynomial systems over finite fields and optimization where the arguments of the objective function and constraints take values from a finite field or a bounded interval of integers. The quantum algorithms can solve these problems with any given success probability and have polynomial runtime complexities in the size of the input, the degree of the inequality constraints, and the condition number of certain matrices derived from the problem. So, we achieved exponential speedup for these problems when their condition numbers are small. As applications, quantum algorithms are given to three basic computational problems in cryptography: the polynomial system with noise problem, the short integer solution problem, the shortest vector problem, as well as the cryptanalysis for the lattice based NTRU cryptosystem. It is shown that these problems and NTRU can against quantum computer attacks only if their condition numbers are large, so the condition number could be used as a new criterion for the lattice based post-quantum cryptosystems.

Solving various NP-Hard problems using exponentially fewer qubits on a Quantum Computer

Abstract:NP-hard problems are not believed to be exactly solvable through general polynomial time algorithms. Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms to address such combinatorial problems have been of great interest in the past few years. Such algorithms are heuristic in nature and aim to obtain an approximate solution. Significant improvements in computational time and/or the ability to treat large problems are some of the principal promises of quantum computing in this regard. The hardware, however, is still in its infancy and the current Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) computers are not able to optimize industrially relevant problems. Moreover, the storage of qubits and introduction of entanglement require extreme physical conditions. An issue with quantum optimization algorithms such as QAOA is that they scale linearly with problem size. In this paper, we build upon a proprietary methodology which scales logarithmically with problem size - opening an avenue for treating optimization problems of unprecedented scale on gate-based quantum computers. In order to test the performance of the algorithm, we first find a way to apply it to a handful of NP-hard problems: Maximum Cut, Minimum Partition, Maximum Clique, Maximum Weighted Independent Set. Subsequently, these algorithms are tested on a quantum simulator with graph sizes of over a hundred nodes and on a real quantum computer up to graph sizes of 256. To our knowledge, these constitute the largest realistic combinatorial optimization problems ever run on a NISQ device, overcoming previous problem sizes by almost tenfold.

Abstract:The last decade witnessed a great surge of fruitful studies in the new paradigm of quantum computing. Remarkable progress has been made in all the areas including quantum algorithms, quantum complexity theory, quantum error-correcting code, quantum information theory, quantum cryptography and physical implementations of quantum computers. However, quantum algorithm design, probably the most important task in quantum computing, did not make as much progress as people expected. This thesis aims at both designing new quantum algorithms and studying why efficient quantum algorithms are so hard to design by proving many lower bounds on quantum query complexity for various problems. We first review (and generalize) known techniques for designing quantum algorithms and for proving quantum lower bounds. Using these techniques, we then study the quantum query complexity for many problems, including some specific problems such as Graph Matching and other natural graph properties, the general tuple search, and local search. We also study the lowest possible quantum query complexity for a class of functions as a whole, such as graph properties, circular functions, and functions invariant of a transitive permutation group, where tight results are given in all these cases. Finally for the quantum lower bounds techniques themselves, we study the main two techniques and show that they are incomparable in power. For the most widely used one, which has a lot of parameters to choose, we show limitations for it in terms of certificate complexity. This implies that we cannot use the method to prove better lower bounds for almost all known open problems in this area.
Quantum Speedup for Some Geometric 3SUM-Hard Problems and Beyond

Abstract:The classical 3SUM conjecture states that the class of 3SUM-hard problems does not admit a truly subquadratic $O(n^{2-\delta})$-time algorithm, where $\delta >0$, in classical computing. The geometric 3SUM-hard problems have widely been studied in computational geometry and recently, these problems have been examined under the quantum computing model. For example, Ambainis and Larka [TQC'20] designed a quantum algorithm that can solve many geometric 3SUM-hard problems in $O(n^{1+o(1)})$-time, whereas Buhrman [ITCS'22] investigated lower bounds under quantum 3SUM conjecture that claims there does not exist any sublinear $O(n^{1-\delta})$-time quantum algorithm for the 3SUM problem. The main idea of Ambainis and Larka is to formulate a 3SUM-hard problem as a search problem, where one needs to find a point with a certain property over a set of regions determined by a line arrangement in the plane. The quantum speed-up then comes from the application of the well-known quantum search technique called Grover search over all regions.

Quantum Algorithms for Graph Coloring and other Partitioning, Covering, and Packing Problems

Abstract:Let U be a universe on n elements, let k be a positive integer, and let F be a family of (implicitly defined) subsets of U. We consider the problems of partitioning U into k sets from F, covering U with k sets from F, and packing k non-intersecting sets from F into U. Classically, these problems can be solved via inclusion-exclusion in O*(2^n) time [BjorklundHK09]. Quantumly, there are faster algorithms for graph coloring with running time O(1.9140^n) [ShimizuM22] and for Set Cover with a small number of sets with running time O(1.7274^n |F|^O(1)) [AmbainisBIKPV19]. In this paper, we give a quantum speedup for Set Partition, Set Cover, and Set Packing whenever there is a classical enumeration algorithm that lends itself to a quadratic quantum speedup, which, for any subinstance on a subset X of U, enumerates at least one member of a k-partition, k-cover, or k-packing (if one exists) restricted to (or projected onto, in the case of k-cover) the set X in O*(c^{|X|}) time with c<2. Our bounded-error quantum algorithm runs in O*((2+c)^(n/2)) for Set Partition, Set Cover, and Set Packing. When c<=1.147899, our algorithm is slightly faster than O*((2+c)^(n/2)); when c approaches 1, it matches the running time of [AmbainisBIKPV19] for Set Cover when |F| is subexponential in n. For Graph Coloring, we further improve the running time to O(1.7956^n) by leveraging faster algorithms for coloring with a small number of colors to better balance our divide-and-conquer steps. For Domatic Number, we obtain a O((2-\epsilon)^n) running time for some \epsilon>0.

Abstract:Quantum information is an interdisciplinary science involving quantum mechanics,information theory,and computer science.It is of strategic importance and has far-reaching influence.Born in the late 1970s,it has developed very fast since the mid-1990s.Quantum information science includes quantum computing,quantum communication,and so on.The combination of different branches of science has led to many new research topics in science and technology,and many remarkable achievements have been made.This paper will introduce the basics of quantum information science,including some very important quantum algorithms such as Shor's algorithm and Grover's algorithm.The former factorizes an integer in polynomial steps,while the latter finds a marked item with a square-root increase in speed compared to classical algorithms.Other recent studies of quantum algorithms will also be reviewed.

Abstract:Due to the nonvanishing average photon population of the squeezed vacuum state, finite corrections to the scattering matrix are obtained. The lowest order contribution to the electron mass shift for a one mode squeezed vacuum state is given by $\delta m(\Omega, s)/m=\alpha (2/\pi)(\Omega /m)^2\sinh^2(s)$, where $\Omega$ and $s$ stand for the mode frequency and the squeeze parameter and $\alpha$ for the fine structure constant, respectively.

Abstract:It has recently been shown that starting with a classical query algorithm (decision tree) and a guessing algorithm that tries to predict the query answers, we can design a quantum algorithm with query complexity $O(\sqrt{GT})$ where $T$ is the query complexity of the classical algorithm (depth of the decision tree) and $G$ is the maximum number of wrong answers by the guessing algorithm [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1410.0932" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1410.0932">arXiv:1410.0932</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1905.13095" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1905.13095">arXiv:1905.13095</a>]. In this paper we show that, given some constraints on the classical algorithms, this quantum algorithm can be implemented in time $\tilde O(\sqrt{GT})$. Our algorithm is based on non-binary span programs and their efficient implementation. We conclude that various graph theoretic problems including bipartiteness, cycle detection and topological sort can be solved in time $O(n^{3/2}\log n)$ and with $O(n^{3/2})$ quantum queries. Moreover, finding a maximal matching can be solved with $O(n^{3/2})$ quantum queries in time $O(n^{3/2}\log n)$, and maximum bipartite matching can be solved in time $O(n^2\log n)$.

Abstract:While recent work suggests that quantum computers can speed up the solution of semidefinite programs, little is known about the quantum complexity of more general convex optimization. We present a quantum algorithm that can optimize a convex function over an $n$-dimensional convex body using $\tilde{O}(n)$ queries to oracles that evaluate the objective function and determine membership in the convex body. This represents a quadratic improvement over the best-known classical algorithm. We also study limitations on the power of quantum computers for general convex optimization, showing that it requires $\tilde{\Omega}(\sqrt n)$ evaluation queries and $\Omega(\sqrt{n})$ membership queries.

Abstract:Theory of computer calculations strongly depends on the nature of elements the computer is made of. Quantum interference allows to formulate the Shor factorization algorithm turned out to be more effective than any one written for classical computers. Similarly, quantum wave packet reduction allows to devise the Grover search algorithm which outperforms any classical one. In the present paper we argue that the quantum incoherent tunneling can be used for elaboration of new algorithms able to solve some NP-hard problems, such as the Traveling Salesman Problem, considered to be intractable in the classical theory of computer computations.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider three types of polynomial equations in quantum computer: linear divisibility equation, which belongs to a special type of binary-quadratic Diophantine equation; quadratic congruence equation with restriction in the solution and exponential congruence equation in finite field. Quantum algorithms based on Grover's algorithm and Shor's algorithm to these problems are given. As for the exponential congruence equation, which has been considered by Dam and Shparlinski \cite{dam} at 2008, a relatively simple quantum algorithm is given here. And some other results and generalizations are discovered.

Abstract:As the prospect of commercial quantum computers turns ever more real in recent times, research in quantum algorithms becomes the center of attention. Due to the strong parallelism of quantum computing in Hilbert space, ordinarily intractable calculation problems could now be solved very efficiently with non-classical means. To exploit parallelism, creative quantum algorithms are required so that efficient quantum oracles can be tailor-designed to specific computation needs. Therefore, in the quest for quantum supremacy, quantum algorithms and their related applications are as important as the quantum computer hardware. This article covers the basic concepts of quantum computation and reviews some important quantum algorithms and their applications.

Quantum computing algorithms for inverse problems on graphs and an NP-complete inverse problem

Abstract:We consider an inverse problem for a finite graph $(X,E)$ where we are given a subset of vertices $B\subset X$ and the distances $d_{(X,E)}(b_1,b_2)$ of all vertices $b_1,b_2\in B$. The distance of points $x_1,x_2\in X$ is defined as the minimal number of edges needed to connect two vertices, so all edges have length 1. The inverse problem is a discrete version of the boundary rigidity problem in Riemannian geometry or the inverse travel time problem in geophysics. We will show that this problem has unique solution under certain conditions and develop quantum computing methods to solve it. We prove the following uniqueness result: when $(X,E)$ is a tree and $B$ is the set of leaves of the tree, the graph $(X,E)$ can be uniquely determined in the class of all graphs having a fixed number of vertices. We present a quantum computing algorithm which produces a graph $(X,E)$, or one of those, which has a given number of vertices and the required distances between vertices in $B$. To this end we develop an algorithm that takes in a qubit representation of a graph and combine it with Grover's search algorithm. The algorithm can be implemented using only $O(|X|^2)$ qubits, the same order as the number of elements in the adjacency matrix of $(X,E)$. It also has a quadratic improvement in computational cost compared to standard classical algorithms. Finally, we consider applications in theory of computation, and show that a slight modification of the above inverse problem is NP-complete: all NP-problems can be reduced to a discrete inverse problem we consider.

Quantum Optimization for the Maximum Cut Problem on a Superconducting Quantum Computer

Abstract:Achieving high-quality solutions faster than classical solvers on computationally hard problems is a challenge for quantum optimization to deliver utility. Using a superconducting quantum computer, we experimentally investigate the performance of a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm inspired by semidefinite programming approaches for solving the maximum cut problem on 3-regular graphs up to several thousand variables. We leverage the structure of the input problems to address sizes beyond what current quantum machines can naively handle. We attain an average performance of 99% over a random ensemble of thousands of problem instances. We benchmark the quantum solver against similarly high-performing classical heuristics, including the Gurobi optimizer, simulated annealing, and the Burer-Monteiro algorithm. A runtime analysis shows that the quantum solver on large-scale problems is competitive against Gurobi but short of others. We explore multiple leads to close the gap and discuss prospects for a practical quantum speedup.

Quantum Speedup in Solving the Maximal-Clique Problem

Abstract:The maximal-clique problem, to find the maximally sized clique in a given graph, is classically an NP-complete computational problem, which has potential applications ranging from electrical engineering, computational chemistry, and bioinformatics to social networks. Here we develop a quantum algorithm to solve the maximal-clique problem for any graph G with n vertices with quadratic speedup over its classical counterparts, where the time and spatial complexities are reduced to, respectively, O(root 2(n)) and O(n(2)). With respect to oracle-related quantum algorithms for the NP-complete problems, we identify our algorithm as optimal. To justify the feasibility of the proposed quantum algorithm, we successfully solve a typical clique problem for a graph G with two vertices and one edge by carrying out a nuclear magnetic resonance experiment involving four qubits.

Abstract:Identifying a biclique with the maximum number of edges bears considerable implications for numerous fields of application, such as detecting anomalies in E-commerce transactions, discerning protein-protein interactions in biology, and refining the efficacy of social network recommendation algorithms. However, the inherent NP-hardness of this problem significantly complicates the matter. The prohibitive time complexity of existing algorithms is the primary bottleneck constraining the application scenarios. Aiming to address this challenge, we present an unprecedented exploration of a quantum computing approach. Efficient quantum algorithms, as a crucial future direction for handling NP-hard problems, are presently under intensive investigation, of which the potential has already been proven in practical arenas such as cybersecurity. However, in the field of quantum algorithms for graph databases, little work has been done due to the challenges presented by the quantum representation of complex graph topologies. In this study, we delve into the intricacies of encoding a bipartite graph on a quantum computer. Given a bipartite graph with n vertices, we propose a ground-breaking algorithm qMBS with time complexity O^*(2^(n/2)), illustrating a quadratic speed-up in terms of complexity compared to the state-of-the-art. Furthermore, we detail two variants tailored for the maximum vertex biclique problem and the maximum balanced biclique problem. To corroborate the practical performance and efficacy of our proposed algorithms, we have conducted proof-of-principle experiments utilizing IBM quantum simulators, of which the results provide a substantial validation of our approach to the extent possible to date.

An in-principle super-polynomial quantum advantage for approximating combinatorial optimization problems via computational learning theory

Abstract:Combinatorial optimization - a field of research addressing problems that feature strongly in a wealth of scientific and industrial contexts - has been identified as one of the core potential fields of applicability of quantum computers. It is still unclear, however, to what extent quantum algorithms can actually outperform classical algorithms for this type of problems. In this work, by resorting to computational learning theory and cryptographic notions, we prove that quantum computers feature an in-principle super-polynomial advantage over classical computers in approximating solutions to combinatorial optimization problems. Specifically, building on seminal work by Kearns and Valiant and introducing a new reduction, we identify special types of problems that are hard for classical computers to approximate up to polynomial factors. At the same time, we give a quantum algorithm that can efficiently approximate the optimal solution within a polynomial factor. The core of the quantum advantage discovered in this work is ultimately borrowed from Shor's quantum algorithm for factoring. Concretely, we prove a super-polynomial advantage for approximating special instances of the so-called integer programming problem. In doing so, we provide an explicit end-to-end construction for advantage bearing instances. This result shows that quantum devices have, in principle, the power to approximate combinatorial optimization solutions beyond the reach of classical efficient algorithms. Our results also give clear guidance on how to construct such advantage-bearing problem instances.
