Abstract:The interest in post-quantum cryptography - classical systems that remain secure in the presence of a quantum adversary - has generated elegant proposals for new cryptosystems. Some of these systems are set in the random oracle model and are proven secure relative to adversaries that have classical access to the random oracle. We argue that to prove post-quantum security one needs to prove security in the quantum-accessible random oracle model where the adversary can query the random oracle with quantum states. We begin by separating the classical and quantum-accessible random oracle models by presenting a scheme that is secure when the adversary is given classical access to the random oracle, but is insecure when the adversary can make quantum oracle queries. We then set out to develop generic conditions under which a classical random oracle proof implies security in the quantum-accessible random oracle model. We introduce the concept of a history-free reduction which is a category of classical random oracle reductions that basically determine oracle answers independently of the history of previous queries, and we prove that such reductions imply security in the quantum model. We then show that certain post-quantum proposals, including ones based on lattices, can be proven secure using history-free reductions and are therefore post-quantum secure. We conclude with a rich set of open problems in this area.

Abstract:Quantum data access and quantum processing can make certain classically intractable learning tasks feasible. However, quantum capabilities will only be available to a select few in the near future. Thus, reliable schemes that allow classical clients to delegate learning to untrusted quantum servers are required to facilitate widespread access to quantum learning advantages. Building on a recently introduced framework of interactive proof systems for classical machine learning, we develop a framework for classical verification of quantum learning. We exhibit learning problems that a classical learner cannot efficiently solve on their own, but that they can efficiently and reliably solve when interacting with an untrusted quantum prover. Concretely, we consider the problems of agnostic learning parities and Fourier-sparse functions with respect to distributions with uniform input marginal. We propose a new quantum data access model that we call "mixture-of-superpositions" quantum examples, based on which we give efficient quantum learning algorithms for these tasks. Moreover, we prove that agnostic quantum parity and Fourier-sparse learning can be efficiently verified by a classical verifier with only random example or statistical query access. Finally, we showcase two general scenarios in learning and verification in which quantum mixture-of-superpositions examples do not lead to sample complexity improvements over classical data. Our results demonstrate that the potential power of quantum data for learning tasks, while not unlimited, can be utilized by classical agents through interaction with untrusted quantum entities.

Abstract:With today's quantum processors venturing into regimes beyond the capabilities of classical devices, we face the challenge to verify that these devices perform as intended, even when we cannot check their results on classical computers. In a recent breakthrough in computer science, a protocol was developed that allows the verification of the output of a computation performed by an untrusted quantum device based only on classical resources. Here, we follow these ideas, and demonstrate in a first, proof-of-principle experiment the verification of the output of a quantum computation using only classical means on a small trapped-ion quantum processor. We contrast this to verification protocols, which require trust and detailed hardware knowledge, as in gate-level benchmarking, or additional quantum resources in case we do not have access to or trust in the device to be tested. While our experimental demonstration uses a simplified version of Mahadev's protocol we demonstrate the necessary steps for verifying fully untrusted devices. A scaled-up version of our protocol will allow for classical verification, requiring no hardware access or detailed knowledge of the tested device. Its security relies on post--quantum secure trapdoor functions within an interactive proof. The conceptually straightforward, but technologically challenging scaled-up version of the interactive proofs, considered here, can be used for a variety of additional tasks such as verifying quantum advantage, generating and certifying quantum randomness, or composable remote state preparation.

Abstract:We propose to analyse quantum protocols by applying formal verification techniques developed in classical computing for the analysis of communicating concurrent systems. One area of successful application of these techniques is that of classical security protocols, exemplified by Lowe's discovery and fix of a flaw in the well-known Needham-Schroeder authentication protocol. Secure quantum cryptographic protocols are also notoriously difficult to design. Quantum cryptography is therefore an interesting target for formal verification, and provides our first example; we expect the approach to be transferable to more general quantum information processing scenarios. The example we use is the quantum key distribution protocol proposed by Bennett and Brassard, commonly referred to as BB84. We present a model of the protocol in the process calculus CCS and the results of some initial analyses using the Concurrency Workbench of the New Century (CWB-NC).

On the Power of Quantum Distributed Proofs

Abstract:Quantum nondeterministic distributed computing was recently introduced as dQMA (distributed quantum Merlin-Arthur) protocols by Fraigniaud, Le Gall, Nishimura and Paz (ITCS 2021). In dQMA protocols, with the help of quantum proofs and local communication, nodes on a network verify a global property of the network. Fraigniaud et al. showed that, when the network size is small, there exists an exponential separation in proof size between distributed classical and quantum verification protocols, for the equality problem, where the verifiers check if all the data owned by a subset of them are identical. In this paper, we further investigate and characterize the power of the dQMA protocols for various decision problems.

Single-Round Proofs of Quantumness from Knowledge Assumptions

Abstract:proof of quantumness is an efficiently verifiable interactive test that an efficient quantum computer can pass, but all efficient classical computers cannot (under some cryptographic assumption). Such protocols play a crucial role in the certification of quantum devices. Existing single-round protocols (like asking the quantum computer to factor a large number) require large quantum circuits, whereas multi-round ones use smaller circuits but require experimentally challenging mid-circuit measurements. As such, current proofs of quantumness are out of reach for near-term devices. In this work, we construct efficient single-round proofs of quantumness based on existing knowledge assumptions. While knowledge assumptions have not been previously considered in this context, we show that they provide a natural basis for separating classical and quantum computation. Specifically, we show that multi-round protocols based on Decisional Diffie-Hellman (DDH) or Learning With Errors (LWE) can be "compiled" into single-round protocols using a knowledge-of-exponent assumption or knowledge-of-lattice-point assumption, respectively. We also prove an adaptive hardcore-bit statement for a family of claw-free functions based on DDH, which might be of independent interest. Previous approaches to constructing single-round protocols relied on the random oracle model and thus incurred the overhead associated with instantiating the oracle with a cryptographic hash function. In contrast, our protocols have the same resource requirements as their multi-round counterparts without necessitating mid-circuit measurements, making them, arguably, the most efficient single-round proofs of quantumness to date. Our work also helps in understanding the interplay between black-box/white-box reductions and cryptographic assumptions in the design of proofs of quantumness.

Abstract:A proof of quantumness is a protocol through which a classical machine can test whether a purportedly quantum device, with comparable time and memory resources, is performing a computation that is impossible for classical computers. Existing approaches to provide proofs of quantumness depend on unproven assumptions about some task being impossible for machines of a particular model under certain resource restrictions. We study a setup where both devices have space bounds $\mathit{o}(\log \log n)$. Under such memory budgets, it has been unconditionally proven that probabilistic Turing machines are unable to solve certain computational problems. We formulate a new class of problems, and show that these problems are polynomial-time solvable for quantum machines, impossible for classical machines, and have the property that their solutions can be "proved" by a small-space quantum machine to a classical machine with the same space bound. These problems form the basis of our newly defined protocol, where the polynomial-time verifier's verdict about the tested machine's quantumness is not conditional on an unproven weakness assumption.

New quantum algorithms and quantum lower bounds

Abstract:The last decade witnessed a great surge of fruitful studies in the new paradigm of quantum computing. Remarkable progress has been made in all the areas including quantum algorithms, quantum complexity theory, quantum error-correcting code, quantum information theory, quantum cryptography and physical implementations of quantum computers. However, quantum algorithm design, probably the most important task in quantum computing, did not make as much progress as people expected. This thesis aims at both designing new quantum algorithms and studying why efficient quantum algorithms are so hard to design by proving many lower bounds on quantum query complexity for various problems. We first review (and generalize) known techniques for designing quantum algorithms and for proving quantum lower bounds. Using these techniques, we then study the quantum query complexity for many problems, including some specific problems such as Graph Matching and other natural graph properties, the general tuple search, and local search. We also study the lowest possible quantum query complexity for a class of functions as a whole, such as graph properties, circular functions, and functions invariant of a transitive permutation group, where tight results are given in all these cases. Finally for the quantum lower bounds techniques themselves, we study the main two techniques and show that they are incomparable in power. For the most widely used one, which has a lot of parameters to choose, we show limitations for it in terms of certificate complexity. This implies that we cannot use the method to prove better lower bounds for almost all known open problems in this area.
Forging quantum data: classically defeating an IQP-based quantum test

Abstract:Recently, quantum computing experiments have for the first time exceeded the capability of classical computers to perform certain computations -- a milestone termed "quantum computational advantage." However, verifying the output of the quantum device in these experiments required extremely large classical computations. An exciting next step for demonstrating quantum capability would be to implement tests of quantum computational advantage with efficient classical verification, such that larger system sizes can be tested and verified. One of the first proposals for an efficiently-verifiable test of quantumness consists of hiding a secret classical bitstring inside a circuit of the class IQP, in such a way that samples from the circuit's output distribution are correlated with the secret (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0809.0847" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0809.0847">arXiv:0809.0847</a>). The classical hardness of this protocol has been supported by evidence that directly simulating IQP circuits is hard, but the security of the protocol against other (non-simulating) classical attacks has remained an open question. In this work we demonstrate that the protocol is not secure against classical forgery. We describe a classical algorithm that can not only convince the verifier that the (classical) prover is quantum, but can in fact can extract the secret key underlying a given protocol instance. Furthermore, we show that the key extraction algorithm is efficient in practice for problem sizes of hundreds of qubits. Finally, we provide an implementation of the algorithm, and give the secret vector underlying the "$25 challenge" posted online by the authors of the original paper.

Towards Equivalence Checking of Classical Circuits Using Quantum Computing

Abstract:Quantum computers and quantum algorithms have made great strides in the last few years and promise improvements over classical computing for specific tasks. Although the current hardware is not yet ready to make real impacts at the time of writing, this will change over the coming years. To be ready for this, it is important to share knowledge of quantum computing in application domains where it is not yet represented. One such application is the verification of classical circuits, specifically, equivalence checking. Although this problem has been investigated over decades in an effort to overcome the verification gap, how it can potentially be solved using quantum computing has hardly been investigated yet. In this work, we address this question by considering a presumably straightforward approach: Using Grover's algorithm. However, we also show that, although this might be an obvious choice, there are several pitfalls to avoid in order to get meaningful results. This leads to the proposal of a working concept of a quantum computing methodology for equivalent checking providing the foundation for corresponding solutions in the (near) future.

Abstract:Only a few classes of quantum algorithms are known which provide a speed-up over classical algorithms. However, these and any new quantum algorithms provide important motivation for the development of quantum computers. In this article new quantum algorithms are given which are based on quantum state tomography. These include an algorithm for the calculation of several quantum mechanical expectation values and an algorithm for the determination of polynomial factors. These quantum algorithms are important in their own right. However, it is remarkable that these quantum algorithms are immune to a large class of errors. We describe these algorithms and provide conditions for immunity.

Complexity-Theoretic Limitations on Quantum Algorithms for Topological Data Analysis

Abstract:Quantum algorithms for topological data analysis (TDA) seem to provide an exponential advantage over the best classical approach while remaining immune to dequantization procedures and the data-loading problem. In this paper, we give complexity-theoretic evidence that the central task of TDA -- estimating Betti numbers -- is intractable even for quantum computers. Specifically, we prove that the problem of computing Betti numbers exactly is #P-hard, while the problem of approximating Betti numbers up to multiplicative error is NP-hard. Moreover, both problems retain their hardness if restricted to the regime where quantum algorithms for TDA perform best. Because quantum computers are not expected to solve #P-hard or NP-hard problems in subexponential time, our results imply that quantum algorithms for TDA offer only a polynomial advantage in the worst case. We support our claim by showing that the seminal quantum algorithm for TDA developed by Lloyd, Garnerone and Zanardi achieves a quadratic speedup over the best known classical approach in asymptotically almost all cases. Finally, we argue that an exponential quantum advantage can be recovered if the input data is given as a specification of simplices rather than as a list of vertices and edges.

The Quantum Tortoise and the Classical Hare: A simple framework for understanding which problems quantum computing will accelerate (and which it will not)

Abstract:Quantum computing promises transformational gains for solving some problems, but little to none for others. For anyone hoping to use quantum computers now or in the future, it is important to know which problems will benefit. In this paper, we introduce a framework for answering this question both intuitively and quantitatively. The underlying structure of the framework is a race between quantum and classical computers, where their relative strengths determine when each wins. While classical computers operate faster, quantum computers can sometimes run more efficient algorithms. Whether the speed advantage or the algorithmic advantage dominates determines whether a problem will benefit from quantum computing or not. Our analysis reveals that many problems, particularly those of small to moderate size that can be important for typical businesses, will not benefit from quantum computing. Conversely, larger problems or those with particularly big algorithmic gains will benefit from near-term quantum computing. Since very large algorithmic gains are rare in practice and theorized to be rare even in principle, our analysis suggests that the benefits from quantum computing will flow either to users of these rare cases, or practitioners processing very large data.

Abstract:The widely held belief that BQP strictly contains BPP raises fundamental questions: Upcoming generations of quantum computers might already be too large to be simulated classically. Is it possible to experimentally test that these systems perform as they should, if we cannot efficiently compute predictions for their behavior? Vazirani has asked: If predicting Quantum Mechanical systems requires exponential resources, is QM a falsifiable theory? In cryptographic settings, an untrusted future company wants to sell a quantum computer or perform a delegated quantum computation. Can the customer be convinced of correctness without the ability to compare results to predictions? To answer these questions, we define Quantum Prover Interactive Proofs (QPIP). Whereas in standard Interactive Proofs the prover is computationally unbounded, here our prover is in BQP, representing a quantum computer. The verifier models our current computational capabilities: it is a BPP machine, with access to few qubits. Our main theorem can be roughly stated as: "Any language in BQP has a QPIP, and moreover, a fault tolerant one". We provide two proofs. The simpler one uses a new (possibly of independent interest) quantum authentication scheme (QAS) based on random Clifford elements. This QPIP however, is not fault tolerant. Our second protocol uses polynomial codes QAS due to BCGHS, combined with quantum fault tolerance and multiparty quantum computation techniques. A slight modification of our constructions makes the protocol "blind": the quantum computation and input are unknown to the prover. After we have derived the results, we have learned that Broadbent at al. have independently derived "universal blind quantum computation" using completely different methods. Their construction implicitly implies similar implications.

Abstract:We construct a quantum oracle relative to which $\mathsf{BQP} = \mathsf{QMA}$ but cryptographic pseudorandom quantum states and pseudorandom unitary transformations exist, a counterintuitive result in light of the fact that pseudorandom states can be "broken" by quantum Merlin-Arthur adversaries. We explain how this nuance arises as the result of a distinction between algorithms that operate on quantum and classical inputs. On the other hand, we show that some computational complexity assumption is needed to construct pseudorandom states, by proving that pseudorandom states do not exist if $\mathsf{BQP} = \mathsf{PP}$. We discuss implications of these results for cryptography, complexity theory, and shadow tomography.

Abstract:Based on quantum computation, a novel quantum cryptographic algorithm that can be used to encrypt classical message is proposed. The security and the physical implementation of this algorithm are analyzed in detail. It is shown that the algorithm can prevent quantum attack strategy as well as classical attack strategy. There are multiple advantages in using the proposed algorithm, most important of which is that it can be implemented with the current technology.

Abstract:It is by now well established that quantum machines can solve certain computational problems much faster than the best algorithms known in the standard Turing machine model. The complexity question of which problems can be feasibly computed by quantum machines has also been extensively investigated in recent years, both in the context of one machine models (quantum polynomial classes) and various flavors of multi-machine models (single and multiple prover quantum interactive proofs). In this talk we examine the more general (but less theoretically investigated) question of which quantum states can be feasibly computed. Specifically, we will focus on the question of what quantum states can be generated by quantum interactive proofs. We will show that several classical interactive proof theorems have analogs in such models. For example, we show that any quantum state computable in quantum polynomial space has a 2-prover quantum interactive proof. Open questions will be discussed.
