Abstract:Owning to the unique structure, the excellent physical and chemical properties, the superstrong mechanics performances and so on, carbon nanotubes had been attracting the interest of all over the world. As the basis of carbon nanotubes, single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) have the better potential prospect in many fields, such as electron nano-devices, single electron devices, energy storage materials and so on. In this paper, the recent developments in the synthesis of SWCNTs were reviewed briefly, which included arc discharge, laser ablation, chemical vapor deposition and so on. At the same time, the crucial factors for the growth of SWCNTs were discussed.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified by corona discharge and then heat treated in the air. The influences of corona discharge parameters such as treatment time and processing power were investigated. The results of energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated the introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups onto the surface of the MWCNTs after heat treatment. The water contact angle tests showed that the hydrophobicity of the MWCNTs was decreased to some extent. The static water contact angle was reduced from 146 degrees to 122 degrees when the time of the corona discharge treatment reached 3 min at the processing power of 200 W. The enhanced thermomechanical and mechanical properties of epoxy nanocomposites filled with the corona discharge treated MWCNTs were observed. The modified MWCNTs conferred better properties on the composites than the pristine MWCNTs because of the improved dispersion of MWCNTs in matrix and the enhanced interfacial interaction between the treated MWCNTs and epoxy. Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as functional materials have aroused great interest among researchers due to their remarkable mechanical, electrical, thermal, and other photoelectric properties. However, CNTs tend to agglomerate into crystalline bundles because of the strong Van der Waals attraction force, adversely affecting their properties. This tendency to self-aggregate has been an important barrier to their chemical and physical manipulation and thus to their practical applications. To overcome this barrier, advances in the maximum-effective dispersion (denoted as mono-dispersion) of CNTs in the liquid phase (water and organic solvent) or solid remain critical to realizing many important commercial applications. Herein we summarize recent breakthroughs in the strategies of CNTs dispersion and highlight the key ongoing research challenges. Studies for currently understanding the aggregation and dispersion kinetics of CNTs are mainly consisting of two aspects, covalent or non-covalent bonding functionalization, which are usually introduced to nullify or reduce their Van der Waals force, thus improving their self-assembling characteristics. In particular, the roles of non-covalent bonding modifications, including electrostatic interaction, π-π stacking interaction, dipole interactions, Van der Waals interactions, hydrogen bond, and coordination, are more attractive in CNTs dispersion without disturbing their internal electronic structure. The surface modification techniques and potential applications are also highlighted.

Abstract:A large number of researches on the electroless plating of carbon nanotubes and their applications after plating have emerged, which has attracted more and more attention. In this review article, the existing electroless plating methods for carbon nanotubes were briefly summarized, and the surface coatings were listed and analyzed in detail. At last, the related applications after electroless metal/alloy coatings of carbon nanotubes were discussed in detail. This study aims to provide a reference for the research and improvement of different electroless metals/alloys coatings of carbon nanotubes. After a clear understanding of the electroless metal/alloy coatings of carbon nanotubes, the appropriate coating can be selected according to the actual situation, so that the carbon nanotubes after plating can be used as reinforcement and modification materials for better satisfaction of the needs, and the application of plated carbon nanotubes has reference significance in more fields.

Abstract:The past ten years' research into carbon nanotubes and their related materials was summarized in the Nanocarbon Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University. The floating catalytic method was used for synthesis of multiwalled carbon nanotubes, singlewalled carbon nanotubes, doublewalled carbon nanotubes and aligned carbon nanotube films. Characteristics of different carbon nanotubes were studied with respect to mechanics, electricity, composites, double layer capacitors, field emission, hydrogen storage and environmental protection. The results show that carbon nanotubes, with various mechanical, electric and adsorptive behavior, are potentially applicable to many fields.

Abstract:The improvement methods of laser processing methods on the surface morphology, growth effect and purification effect of CNTs are reviewed.The effects of ultrasonic process parameters on the dispersion properties of CNTs were studied, and detailed analysis and discussion were carried out.The influence of μEDM on the surface roughness of CNTs is analyzed from the perspective of electrical and non-electrical parameters.The research methods of electrochemical machining to improve the different properties of CNTs are summarized.Put forward the idea of combining intelligent algorithms with non-traditional processing technologies to improve the performance of CNTs.In recent years, carbon nanotubes(CNTs) have begun to attract attention in the fields of field emission, nanoelectronic devices, nano machines and composite reinforced materials. But the traditional processing methods for cutting these increase tool wear. However, non-traditional processing can be used to machine materials of any hardness and strength. In this paper, the research trends of non-traditional processing of CNTs are critically reviewed. First, this study introduces the application of CNTs and their development history. Second, the surface morphology, purification and growth effects of laser-processed CNTs are summarised, these are analysed and discussed. Subsequently, the effects of ultrasonic parameters and other external parameters on the diormance of ultrasonically processed CNTs are analysed. Next, the effects of electrical and non-electrical parameters on the surface morphology of CNTs processed by micro-electro-discharge machining(μEDM) are compared, and a summary analysis is presented. In addition, the research on the improvement of the performance of CNTs by electrochemical machining(ECM) is reviewed and prospected. Simultaneously, different non-traditional processing of CNTs is discussed. Finally, the most recent progress in non-traditional processing of CNTs is described, and the future trends, which may potentially guide subsequent research studies, are predicted.

Abstract:This study focuses on in situ synthesis of CdS nanoparticles on the surfaces of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. By chemical reaction of cadmium chloride and thioacetamide in the solution with carbon nanotubes, which were pretreated by air oxidization and acid modification, cadmium sulfide nanoparticles densely supported on carbon nanotubes with 10nm size and homogeneous distribution were prepared. The composite material with the composite structure of CdS decorating the nanotube surfaces was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction pattern. The CdS nanoparticles are of cubic crystal structure, show good adhesion to the nanotubes. This method can be extended to prepare other inorganic nanoparticle–carbon nanotube composites.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are being noticed more and more by scientists because of their unique structure,properties and prospects of application. However,as prepared CNTs are usually accom-panied with carbonaceous and metallic impurity which influence some of these properties and restrict cor- responding applications,purification of CNTs is essential. In this paper,comprehensive purification methods,which are based on analyzing the characteristics of physical-based purification and chemical oxidation method,are summarized in detail. Abstract:Carbon fiber (CF) has high strength, high modulus, and excellent high-temperature resistance and chemical stability; therefore, it is used in diverse fields. However, due to the lack of active functional groups on the surface of CF and surface defects generated during the preparation of CF, the wettability of the fiber surface is poor, which seriously affects the interface performance between the fiber and a resin matrix. In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on the surface modification of CF. In this review, studies on the surface modification of CF are summarized, including the various methods utilized, such as dry modification, wet modification, and nanomodification, as well as their current application status. As interest in this material increases, high-performance CFs will likely play an important role in many fields in the future.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) directly synthesized on surfaces are promising building blocks for nanoelectronics. The structures and the arrangement of the SWNTs on surfaces determine the quality and density of the fabricated nanoelectronics, implying the importance of structure controlled growth of SWNTs on surfaces. This review summarizes the recent research status in controlling the orientation, length, density, diameter, metallicity, and chirality of SWNTs directly synthesized on surfaces by chemical vapor deposition, together with a session presenting the characterization method of the chirality of SWNTs. Finally, the remaining major challenges are discussed and future research directions are proposed.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and assembling them into macroscopic structures are of great importance to the applications of carbon nanotubes, and a deep understanding of the growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes would be an indispensable prerequisite for well-defined synthesis in a controllable way. Here we show some of our recent progress in carbon nanotube's growth mechanism, controlled synthesis, and applications. By introducing a ~ 13C labeling method, we revealed that the growth mechanism of the carbon nanotubes made by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is the “extrusion model”. Serials of labels can be embedded into CNTs by tuning the composition and the flow rate of the reactive gases during the growth process, and the growth rate of CNT arrays can be calculated thereby. The fabrication of super\|aligned CNT arrays was expanded to 4-inch wafer scale. A novel method was invented to process the raw yarn by passing through volatile organic solvents. As a result, both the strength and manipulability were improved substantially. The processed yarn can be applied as thermal electron sources, large current density field emitters and in fluorescent tubes etc. Thermal interface materials (TIMs) has significant importance in IT industry, we prepared CNT array-polymer matrix which has very high thermal conductivity and extremely low thermal resistance. Techniques like chemical modification, tip etching and surface metal layer were explored to enhance the thermal conductivity of the CNT thermal interface materials.

Abstract:In this work the surface modification and functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated. CNTs were firstly treated by acid mixture H2SO4/HNO3 to introduce the carboxylic group onto the surface of CNTs. This carboxylic group was used as reaction precursor in the functionalization. Two functional groups, dodecylamine (DDA) and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (3-APTES), were successfully covalently attached to CNTs. The functionalized CNTs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis (DSC/TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. The CNTs attached to the organofunctional moieties have greater versatility for further utilization in different application fields such as biology, nanocomposites, solar energy, etc.

Abstract:Due to their excellent properties, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been regarded as one of the most potential materials for future applications in nanoelectronic devices. However, there is a huge gulf between production and applications. To meet the needs for applications, SWNTs’ chirality, metallic/semiconducting property and morphology should be controlled in the growth process. Together with our recent works, we present herein a brief review on the growth of SWNTs on surface with controlled structures, including 1) Cap engineering for SWNTs growth with controlled chirality; 2) Reaction activity diversity induced growth of semiconducting SWNTs; and 3) Combination of two growth modes for fabricating SWNTs on surface with controlled morphology.

Enhancement of mechanical properties and conductivity in carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/Cu matrix composite by surface and intratube decoration of CNTs

Abstract:<p>Strength and ductility are often a paradox in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced Cu matrix composite, as well as strength and electrical conductivity. Interface and characteristics of CNTs are critical factors in determining the mechanical properties and conductivity of Cu matrix composites. In the present study, a novel tactic by surface and intratube decoration of CNTs is adopted to break the above mentioned dilemmas. By decorating the surface of CNTs with CuO nanoparticles and taking advantage of the good wettability between CuO and Cu matrix, uniform dispersion of CNTs is realized through ball milling. In the final composite, CuO nanoparticles on the surface of CNTs are reduced to Cu. High density interfacial dislocations and interfacial disordered areas are formed between Cu matrix and CNTs, thus forming a strong interfacial bonding. By decorating the inner walls of CNTs with Cu nanoparticles, the interfacial shear stress between Cu matrix and CNTs is improved due to the extrusion effect of Cu nanoparticles on the inner walls. Moreover, the Cu filled inside the tubes can also reduce the intra-tube resistivity of CNTs by increasing their conducting cross-section. Consequently, the Cu matrix composite with simultaneous improvement of strength (272 MPa), ductility (14.3%) and conductivity (93.6% IACS) is achieved in our present study. This tactic provides a new idea to deal with the strength-ductility and strength-conductivity dilemmas in CNTs reinforced metal matrix composites.</p>

Synthesis of Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes Decorated with ZnO/Ag Nanoparticles by Co-precipitation Method

Abstract:Background: This research indicated that such abstract are more informative and more readable, in field of preparation of nanocomposite materials. Aim: The purpose of this work represented by decoration of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) with nanoparticles using co-precipitation method and exhibit different physical properties from those of CNTs alone and its appropriate for this particular journal. Methods: Preparation MWCNTs surface by Ag/ZnO nanoparticles using two steps represented by acid treatment of MWCNTs in a mixture acid of sulfuric acid (95% H2SO4) and nitric acid (65% HNO3) at 3:1 ratio and second step represented by decoration of Ag/ZnO nanoparticles on FMWCNTs using co-precipitation method to prepare ZnO/Ag nanoparticles decorated on F-MWCNTs as nanocomposite material. Results: The results of this work reveal the decoration of Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles on the FMWCNTs was achieved without any impurities as shown in XRD, Raman spectra and FTIR and FESEM observations reveal that Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles have spherical morphologies and adhered on the functionalized MWCNTs, with diameters are about 22-30 nm. Also it is clear that there were no any other materials on the surface of F-MWCNTs except ZnO and Ag which verifies the results obtained from XRD and EDS analysis. Conclusion: In this article, Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles have been successfully decorated on to modified MWCNTs by an in-situ co-precipitation method. From XRD results, it can be seen that the (002) peak of MWCNTs slightly increased after the addition of Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles. Raman spectra and FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of Zn-C or Zn-O-C bonds between acid-treated MWCNTs and Ag-doped zinc oxide. The FESEM and EDS analysis revealed that the decoration of Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles on the F-MWCNTs was achieved without any impurities. Finally, the small sizes Agdoped ZnO NPs deposited on F-MWCNTs make it very promising for biomedicine applications.
