Abstract:Existing research on the widely used concrete-filled steel tubes is mainly focused on static or cyclic loading, and the studies on effects of high strain rate are relatively rare. In this article, seven stub concrete-filled steel tubular columns with square section were tested under both static and impact loads, using a large-capacity drop-weight testing machine. The research parameters were variable height of the drop-weight and different load types. The experimental results show that the failure modes of the concrete-filled steel tube columns from the impact tests are similar with those under static load, characterized by the local buckling of the steel tube. The time history curves of impact force and steel strain were investigated. The results indicate that with increasing impact energy, the concrete-filled steel tube stub columns had a stronger impact-resistant behavior. The dynamic analysis software LS-DYNA was employed to simulate the impact behaviors of the concrete-filled steel tube specimens, and the finite element results were reasonable compared with the test results. The parameter analysis on the impact behavior of concrete-filled steel tube columns was performed using the finite element model as well. A simple method was proposed to calculate the impact strength of square concrete-filled steel tube columns and compared favorably with experimental results.

Abstract:A split Hopkinson pressure bar equipment was used to perform high strain rate compressive tests on concrete filled steel tubes (CFT) along with benchmark plain concrete cylinders for comparison. This paper reports the results of dynamic compressive strength, ultimate strain, residual strength and the secant stiffness. The dynamic increase factor (DIF) of CFT strength upon the increase of strain rate was obtained based on the logarithm linear fitting of the test results. The DIF of the CFT specimens can be relatively well estimated with conservatism using the simple superposition of dynamic uniaxial strength of concrete and steel. The confinement stress and the confinement coefficient under high strain rate loading are also discussed based on assumptions similar to those used for the static loading cases.

Abstract:Based on the experiments of concrete-filled square steel tubular column connections with interior or exterior diaphragms under cyclic loading,3-D nonlinear finite element models were used to analyze the mechanical properties of these two types of connections using ANSYS.Based on appropriate material stress-strain relations and failure criteria,finite element analyses were conducted under monotonic loading and cyclic loading.The load-deflection curves and shear force-deformation curves by finite element analyses show good agreement with those of the experiments.Parametric analyses were conducted on the connections with exterior diaphragms to investigate the influences of compression ratio,width to thickness ratio,strength of the concrete in the square steel tube and concrete slab height.It is found that compression ratio and width to thickness ratio are more important to the connections.

Abstract:Based on data from 266 tests of concrete filled steel tubular stub columns gathered from literature, the design equations for axial load capacities according to domestic and international codes and specifications are examined. It is found that the equations of AISC, CECS and AIJ specifications are most conservative. The EC specifications provide statistically closer but slightly conservative predictions to the test results. The average predictions by DL and GJB specifications are slightly higher than the test data. The paper also characterizes the load-deformation relationships, and statistically evaluates several stress-strain models proposed by different researchers. It was found that they coincided with test results in the elastic stage, but for the description of the decline and strengthening stages, each model is quite different and has different applicable scope.

Abstract:Nine simply supported circular steel concrete-filled tubes (CFTs), two circular steel posttensioned concrete-filled tubes (PTCFTs), and one circular steel fiber-reinforced concrete-filled tube (FRCFT) have been tested in an instrumented drop-weight impact facility. The weight and the height of the drop-weight were varied to cause failure in some test specimens. The failure modes and local damages in those specimens have been investigated extensively. Failure in the steel tubes was commonly tensile facture or rupture along the circumference. Concrete core in the impact area commonly crushed under compression and cracked under tension. The use of prestressing strands and steel fibers significantly restrained the concrete tension cracks in the PTCFT and FRCFT specimens, respectively. Abstract:Eccentric loading experiment of 13 steel tube-reinforced concrete columns and a reinforced concrete column is implemented. The whole process from the start load on the steel tube-reinforced concrete column until damage has been researched. Change of ultimate bearing capacity with eccentricity, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, position coefficient has been studied, and deflection curve and load-vertical displacement curve under eccentric compressive load were obtained. Failure characteristics of steel tube-reinforced concrete were divided into two different type, small eccentric damage and big eccentric damage. With the same conditions, when steel tube ratio of steel tube-reinforced concrete was 2%, its ultimate bearing capacity was nearly double of reinforced concrete columns.

Abstract:A real-size experiment on 11 tubes was done to study the performance of centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes under bending and torsion. This paper first introduces the relevant operating method, equipment, subjects and processes. The factors that affect deformation and stiffness and the break mechanism under different loading were studied. Experimental stress analysis showed that the values of practical critical stress of steel tubes accorded well with the MISES Yielding Rule. The correlative equation (on the bearing capacity of a structural member under bending and torsion) deduced in this study may provide valuable reference for the design of this structural member.

Abstract:There have been some reports based on tests and theoretical analyses, which address the importance of the influence of the initial stresses. However, the eccentricity of initial stresses was not considered in these analyses on the assumption that the initial stresses are axial and uniform across the sections. In fact, there usually exist eccentricities. In this paper, a non-linear finite element numerical investigation is presented on the effect of eccentric initial stresses in the square steel tube on the behavior of concrete-filled square steel tubular member and was used to compare to that when the eccentricity of initial stresses is ignored. The results showed that the eccentricity is very important. Finally, some relationships are deduced when considering the eccentricity, which could be references for practical engineers.

Abstract:A total of six concrete-filled square hollow section (SHS) steel tubes were tested. The main research is to study the behavior of specimens under different loading conditions, which include steel tube and core concrete simultaneously loaded, only core concrete loaded, only core concrete loaded together with grease between steel tube and core concrete. In the experiment, the load-strain relationship curve and the load-longitudinal deformation action curve were obtained and analyzed. The result showed that the bearing capacity and elastic rigidity of the specimen with core concrete loaded were lower than those of the specimen whose core concrete and steel tube were loaded simultaneously, but the ductility of the former is better than that of the later. The bearing capacity of specimen under different loading conditions is over the summation of the load bearing capacity of steel tube and core concrete. The cohesion between steel tube and core concrete had no evident influence on the bearing capacity of the specimen loaded on the core concrete.

Abstract:In this paper,a finite element model (FEM) is developed using ABAQUS to simulate the behavior of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns with inner profiled steel subjected to eccentric loading,as well as the CFST columns with initial stresses in steel tube.The FEM is based on the experimental research on behavior of the above two types of composite column.The numerical results are well match with the experimental results.The FEM is used to analyze the performance of CFST columns with inner steel cross section under eccentric loading and initial stresses in steel tube,and the mechanic behavior rules on pro-load in steel tube of the columns are achieved in detail.The strength index kp is analyzed on relevant parameters systematically using the model.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study on the mechanical behavior, particularly the tensile stiffness, of square concrete-filled steel tubes (SCFTs) under axial tension, from both the force/displacement-level and strain-level perspectives. A group of SCFT and hollow tube specimens are tested with extensive data of the steel tube strains measured. From the force/displacement-level perspective, it is found that the tensile stiffness of SCFTs is 31.8% higher than that of hollow tubes on average. It is proposed that tensile stiffness enhancement is a combined result of the confine-stiffening effect and tension-stiffening effect. The confine-stiffening effect is because of the biaxial tensile stress state of the steel tube due to the concrete-to-steel tube confinement of SCFTs. From the strain-level perspective, the existence of the concrete-to-steel tube confinement is proved by comparing the measured transverse-to-longitudinal strain ratio of the steel tube between SCFT and hollow tube specimens. Besides, the evidence for the tension-stiffening effect in SCFTs is also provided by the non-uniformly distributed longitudinal steel strain of the steel tube. In addition, the fractal cracking phenomenon is experimentally observed and quantitatively measured, indicating the interaction of the concrete-to-steel tube confinement and tension-stiffening effect. It is concluded that the tensile stiffness of SCFTs will be underestimated if the SCFTs under tension are simply treated as equal to the hollow tubes by neglecting the concrete-to-steel tube confinement and tension-stiffening effect; this underestimation may cause non-conservative inaccuracies in calculating the component internal forces, structural natural frequencies, and seismic effects in the design and analysis of structures.

Abstract:This paper presents research on the reinforced concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) members subjected to eccentric tension, where the embedded components are the reinforcing bars or steel angles. A total of 8 full-scale specimens were designed and tested with main parameters of specimen types and load eccentricities. In particular, there was no direct connection between the outer tube and embedded components. Therefore the tensile load was transferred from the outer steel tube to the reinforcing bars or angles through the filled concrete. The failure mode, the load versus deformation relationships and the strain responses were recorded and analysed. The simplified design equations were also proposed for the elastic tensile stiffness and tension versus moment interaction relationships of reinforced CFSTs under eccentric tension.

Based on the theoretical model, influence of the initial stress coefficient, slenderness ratio, sectional steel ratio, load eccentricity ratio, strength of the materials, as well as hollow section ratio are discussed. Finally, formulas for the influence coefficient of bearing capacity of concrete-filled double skin steel tubular beam-columns considered the effects of initial stress are suggested.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the stress concentration factors of concrete-filled tubular T joints subject to axial loading and in-plane bending. Experimental investigation was performed to investigate the Hot Spot Stress distribution along the intersection of chord and brace. Five tubular T joint specimens with self compacting concrete filled in the chord was tested. In addition, three T joints made of tubular hollow sections was also tested for comparison. Generally, it is shown that the filled concrete effectively reduce the peak SCFs. The stress concentration factors obtained from the test results were compared against predictions from some of the well-established existing stress concentration factor equations. Generally, these predictions from equations are very conservative for concrete-filled specimens.

Abstract:In the practical construction of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) structures, the steel tubes usually have already had some initial stresses before they work together with the core-concrete. The initial stress should affect the behaviour of the whole member. In this paper, a comprehensive numerical investigation is presented on the behaviour of CFST columns under initial stresses by the non-linear finite element method. The investigation includes several parametrical studies such as initial stress ratio, slenderness ratio, eccentricity ratio, etc. Numerical analysis results are verified with published experimental ones. Recommendations on how to consider the effect in design formulae are also suggested.

Abstract:Experimental investigation of concrete-filled steel tubular columns with reinforcing lattice angle was conducted in this study. Eight column specimens were divided into four groups by length from 500 mm to 3 500 mm. And each group had two columns specimens with and without lattice angle. The whole loading process and failure mode were observed. The influence of test parameters including lattice angle and slenderness ratio on the ultimate strengths of specimens were investigated. Meanwhile, a series of important curves of load-displacement, load-axial strain and load-hoop strain were also plotted. It is shown that the loading process of specimens consists of elastic stage, yield stage and failure stage. The failure modes are mainly strength failure and failure of elasto-plastic instability. The ultimate strengths of specimens with reinforcing lattice angle are enhanced and the slenderness has great influence on ultimate strengths and failure modes of specimens. In addition, the test strengths were compared with the design strengths calculated using the AISC Specification and Eurocode 4 for the design of composite structural members. It is shown that the design strengths are generally conservative. A new design method was also proposed for the concrete-filled steel tubular columns with reinforcing lattice angle. It is shown that the design predictions from the proposed method agree with test results well.

Abstract:A mechanical model for the concrete filled square steel tubular stub columns is proposed in the paper. It is based on thedeterminate stress-strain relations for the composited materials: steel and core concrete. The load versus strain relation is theo-retically established for the concrete filled square steel tubular column. A test of twenty pieces of stub columns is performed.We consider that the effects of the steel on the core concrete can be illustrated by an effective coefficient. The theoretical re-sults are in good agreement with that of the test. Another simplified method is derived based on the model. Comparisons aremade between the simplified method and other methods specified in foreign codes. The results also show that the simplifiedmethod is reliable and feasible.

Abstract:Test results on concrete-filled square steel tubular stub columns with longitudinal inner and outer welded stiffeners under concentric compression are presented in this paper. A longitudinal stiffener was provided at each side of the tube. The main experimental parameters considered were the width-to-thickness ratio and stiffener rigidity. Moreover, empty tubes with or without stiffeners, as well as unstiffened concrete-filled square steel, tubes were also tested for comparison. Results from the study indicated that, compressive load of the composite stub columns was increased when stiffeners were provided. The stiffeners can effectively delay the local buckling of the tube, as well as improve the lateral confinement on concrete core.
