Abstract:Experiments in a 35 L airlift bioreactor were conducted to study the biodegradation of artificial terephthalic acid (TA) wastewater. 5% (volume fraction) polyurethane sponges were added into the reactor to immobilize the microorganisms and to form an anoxic zone within the carriers. The results indicated that the terephthalic acid wastewater can be effectively treated by the airlift bioreactor filled with porous carriers, and that biodegradation is the main removal mechanism. The reactor performance in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and TA removal rate exceeded 98% at a COD volumetric loading rate of 6.95 g·L-1·d-1. By gradually increasing the inlet terephthalic acid concentration while keeping the glucose concentration constant, the microorganisms can be acclimated to the culture within 50 d. Scanning electron microscope observation shows significant differences in the microbial population between the suspension and the immobilized sludge.
