Abstract:The discrete element method (DEM) is one of the new-concept numerical methods developed in recent years, which can be only applied to the dynamic problems in principle. Based on the static equilibrium conditions, the quasi-static equations have been settled for discrete element systems, and it is proved that the coefficient matrix of the equations is symmetric, positive defined, rare, and stripe distributed. An active column method is used for saving more RAM and calculation time than the Gaussian method. By introducing the generalized Maxwell model for the interaction between neighboring element pairs, the DEM method for simulating quasi-static responses of linear viscoelastic materials has been established. The quasi-static DEM is independent upon the traditional DEM and it is a supplement and development of the traditional DEM.
