Abstract:The rupture dimensions of earthquake faults are important parameters for characterizing earthquake ruptures and ground motions. Two key parameters to be determined are the rupture depth and dip angle of earthquake faults. Dislocation theory in an elastic half space indicates that if a seismic rupture directly runs up to the ground surface, there exist zero points of horizontal strain in the surface deformation, which correspond to the rupture depths, except for pure strike-slip faults. In this study, we use numerical simulations to investigate the possibility of inferring rupture depths from zero-strain points for cases of buried faults and heterogeneous media. The results show that the correspondence of zero-strain points to the rupture depths can be influenced by the heterogeneity of the underground media and the stress field. For buried faults, the correspondence relationship is approximately valid when the fault depth is < 1 km. In addition, the range of earthquake fault dip angles can be estimated by horizontal displacements on the ground. We also study how to determine the rupture depths of faults from InSAR data after large earthquakes, and successfully apply the method to the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. The method proposed here, which determines the parameters of fault geometry according to surface deformation, is simple and easy to perform. With independent of aftershocks, it can provide valuable constraints to kinematic inversions.

Abstract:To clarify the relationship between GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) crustal deformation and the preparation of strong earthquakes in the western Chinese Mainland, a series of methods including velocity field, strain rate field, and strain parameter time series are adopted based on the GNSS observation data from the CMONOC (Crustal Movement Observation Network of China). The abnormal characteristics of crustal deformation movement before the M ≥ 5 earthquakes in the area since 1999 are studied. The corresponding variety of the crustal movement before earthquakes is discussed in combination with the seismogenic structure of earthquakes. The abnormalities of the GNSS velocity field, strain field, and strain parameter time series before earthquakes with different magnitudes are proposed. Finally, the anomaly criterion before medium-strong-large earthquakes in the western Chinese Mainland is proposed according to the GNSS and its combination with the characteristics of geological structure. The results can provide a basis for the forecasting of the trend and location of medium-strong-large earthquakes in the western Chinese Mainland.

Abstract:The subsequent series of responses to big events may exhibit a synchronicity of event number, frequency and energy release in different fault zones. This synchronicity is a reliable source for probing non-intuitive geological structures, assessing regional seismicity hazard map and even predicting the next big events. The synchronicity of main faults in the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is still unknown to us. We propose to examine the correlation of earthquake occurrence among different fault zones to indicate this synchronicity, and to obtain a preliminary understanding of geodynamics processes and the unrecognized characteristics of deep evolution in the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We estimate temporal changes of completeness level, frequency seismicity, and intensity seismicity, referring respectively to Mc, Z, and E values, of 21 main fault zones, using a seismic catalogue from 1970 to 2015. Our results reveal that six fault zone pairs of fault zones exhibit relative high correlation (>0.6) by all three indicators, while four fault zone pairs are non-adjacent with close internal affinity offsetting the limit of spatial distance, such as the pair of Rongjing-mabian fault and Minjiang-huya fault. Most strikingly, some fault zone pairs showing typical high correlation (>0.8) of seismicity frequency or seismicity intensity, the faults surprisingly belong to neither the same seismic belt nor the same geological block, exhibiting a regional scale remote triggering pattern of earthquakes or structures. An embryonic pattern to predict the next possible events will also be presented. This correlation analysis discovers a previously unrecognized strong coupling relationship among main faults with high earthquake risk in the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract:The recurrence interval of large earthquakes varies front one active fault to another as inferred from the palaeoseismic data in China. Generally speaking, the interval in eastern part of China is much longer than that in the western part, and that around the plate boundary is remarkably shorter than that in the intraplate of China. To consider the reason for the phenomenon, a mechanical model was constructed by the method of finite element numerical analysis to probe into the distribution of elastic strain energy caused by tectonic stress. The procedures to be used in this paper are: (1) to analyze the boundary condition and action pattern of force on the boundary in China and its adjacent areas by geological method, (2) to make inversion of the force acting on the boundary and the tectonic stress field in the region by finite element method based on the criterion of the maximum principal stress direction, (3) to calculate the attenuation of strain energy with the increase of distance apart front the plate boundary. Based on the attenuation pattern, the accumulative range of strain energy is converted to reach a given value (a given magnitude of large earthquake) in different parts of the research region into time or period, which is compared with the known recurrence interval of large earthquake along an active fault zone obtained by palaeoseismic method. The comparison shows that the remarkable difference of large earthquake recurrence interval between plate boundary and intraplate cart be well explained by the attenuation pattern of strain energy.
Crustal Strain-Rate Fields Estimated from GNSS Data with a Bayesian Approach and Its Correlation to Seismic Activity in Mainland China

Abstract:We propose a new Bayesian approach to estimate continuous crustal strain-rate fields from spatially discrete displacement-rate data, based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations, under the prior constraint on spatial flatness of the strain-rate fields. The optimal values of the hyperparameters in the model of strain-rate fields are determined by using Akaike's Bayesian Information Criterion. A methodological merit of this approach is that, by introducing a two-layer Delaunay tessellation technique, the time-consuming computation of strain rates can be omitted through the model estimation process. We apply the Bayesian approach to GNSS displacement-rate data in Mainland China to obtain a unique GNSS velocity field for sub-regions with different tectonic backgrounds. We also examine the correlation between the estimated strain-rate fields and seismic activity by using the Molchan Error Diagram. The results show that the rate of maximum shear strain is positively correlated with the occurrence of earthquakes, indicating the strain rate can be used to augment probabilistic earthquake models for background seismicity forecasting.
Using Active Source to Monitor Velocity Variation in Shallow Sediment Caused by the Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:Seismic velocity near the fault zone is sensitive to the stress state within that area.After the Wenchuan earthquake,in order to monitor the velocity variation near fault zone,we conducted a field experiment in the north edge of Longmenshan fault,which lasted three weeks since July 6.In the experiment,an electric hammer was used as a repeatable seismic source and the seismic signals were recorded by eight short period seismometers composed of Guralp 40T sensor and Reftek 130B digitizer.The digitizers were timing continuously with GPS to reduce timing error.We calculate the travel time variation by the combination of absolute time and cross correlation time-delay measurement.The fractal velocity variations were obtained from travel time measurement.Two prominent drops up to～2% were found,which were much more than the possible variation caused by barometric pressure change.We notice two moderate aftershocks with magnitude 4.9 and 4.7 occurring within 10km from the experiment field,when the two surface velocity drops showed up.We speculate the surface velocity drops may be caused by the coseismic effects of these two earthquakes.The theoretical calculation of the stress drop agrees with our measurement.
The Distribution Characteristics of Deformation Field Caused by Three Great Earthquakes in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Its Vicinity Since 2001

Abstract:Based on a viscous-elastic crustal model with constraint conditions from GPS and seismic dislocation data and adopting the finite element method, we analyzed the crustal deformation characteristics caused by 2001 Kunlun Mountain M(s)8.1, 2008 Wenchuan M(s)8.0 and 2015 Nepal M(s)8.1 earthquakes, obtained the displacement and deformatiOn field. These earthquakes have occurred in the north, east, and south margins of the Tibetan Plateau respectively. Our primary results suggest obvious differences in deformation regimes, seismogenic fault geometry and source parameters, as well as crustal deformation patters despite the substantially similar magnitudes. These differences caused by seismogenic fault nature and subsurface structures are mainly manifested by different scopes of deformed regions and different strain amplitudes. Through these simulation results, we can detect more about the distribution characteristics of stress loading and unloading area caused by large earthquakes. Moreover, it plays an important role in forecasting the earthquake possibility of seismogenic region.

During the study of earthquake losses, we find the problems which exist in the current earthquake damage and losses assessment practice based on the parameters obtained from rapid determination of earthquake location, A group of 175 rapid seismic location data and relevant macroscopic epicenter ones since 1989 in main land China which distributed in East and West of China are collected and the statistical parameters of probability distribution of the deviation of rapid seismic location from the macroscopic epicenter are obtained, which obeys the two-dimensional normal distribution.
The Crustal Dynamics and Its Geological Explanation of the Three-Dimensional Co-Seismic Deformation Field for the 2021 Maduo MS7.4 Earthquake Based on GNSS and InSAR

Abstract:Three-dimensional deformation is an important input to explore seismic mechanisms and geodynamics. The GNSS and InSAR technologies are commonly used to obtain the co-seismic three-dimensional deformation field. This paper focused on the effect of calculation accuracy caused by the deformation correlation between the reference point and the points involved in the solution, to build a high-accuracy three-dimensional deformation field for a detailed geological explanation. Based on the variance component estimation (VCE) method, the InSAR LOS, azimuthal deformation, and the GNSS horizontal and vertical deformation were integrated to solve the three-dimensional displacement of the study area in combination with the elasticity theory. The accuracy of the three-dimensional co-seismic deformation field of the 2021 Maduo MS7.4 earthquake obtained by the method proposed in this paper, was compared with that obtained from the only InSAR measurements obtained using a multi-satellite and multi-technology approach. The results showed the difference in root-mean-square errors (RMSE) of the integration and GNSS displacement was 0.98 cm, 5.64 cm, and 1.37 cm in the east-west, north-south and vertical direction respectively, which was better than the RMSE of the method using only InSAR and GNSS displacement, which was 5.2 cm and 12.2 cm in the east-west, north-south, and no vertical direction. With the geological field survey and aftershocks relocation, the results showed good agreement with the strike and the position of the surface rupture. The maximum slip displacement was about 4 m, which was consistent with the result of the empirical statistical formula. It was firstly found that the pre-existing fault controlled the vertical deformation on the south side of the west end of the main surface rupture caused by the Maduo MS7.4 earthquake, which provided the direct evidence for the theoretical hypothesis that large earthquakes could not only produce surface rupture on seismogenic faults, but also trigger pre-existing faults or new faults to produce surface rupture or weak deformation in areas far from seismogenic faults. An adaptive method was proposed in GNSS and InSAR integration, which could take into account the correlation distance and the efficiency of homogeneous point selection. Meanwhile, deformation information of the decoherent region could be recovered without interpolation of the GNSS displacement. This series of findings formed an essential supplement to the field surface rupture survey and provided a novel idea for the combination of the various spatial measurement technologies to improve the seismic deformation monitoring.
Near-Field Surface Movement During the Wenchuan M (S)8.0 Earthquake Measured by High-Rate Gps

Abstract:Based on high-rate (1 Hz) GPS data from the Sichuan GPS Continuous Observation Network on the footwall of the Longmenshan Fault, we have characterized the near-field surface movement process during the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake. Results show that the maximum deformation near the fault is larger than the deformation set. Stations on the northern segment of the fault moved towards the epicenter first, and then turned toward the vertical orientation of the fault. Deformation of stations on the southern segment is smaller and recovered. The initial motion at all of the stations was downward followed by periodic up and down movements. Comparing the displacement from high-rate GPS and accelerograph data, we can see that they are consistent prior to the arrival of the principal shock, but afterwards a 10 cm difference is found, even though they are synchronized and in phase. More work is yet to be done to explain this. This is the first time that actual the real near-field surface movements of an earthquake of M > 7.0 have been determined in china. These measurements are therefore of high value for studies of surface rupture processes and the analysis of seismic wave travels paths in this region.
Assessment of the seismic hazard in North China by combining micro-seismicity records and geodetic observations

Abstract:North China has suffered numerous devastating historical and recent earthquakes, causing huge loss of life and property. Therefore, it is vital to identify the regions with the greatest potential to generate large earthquakes in the future. Previous studies mainly evaluated the seismic hazard in North China using earthquake records or geodetic methods separately. Here, we evaluated the seismic records and geodetic observations in combination to comprehensively assess the earthquake potential. We first evaluated the earthquake catalog and determined that the completeness range of magnitude is 1.9 to 2.8 based on the b-values estimated by magnitude-frequency distribution using catalogs with different minimum-magnitude cutoffs. We then obtained the spatial distributions of three strain rate parameters, including the maximum shear, the principal, and second invariant of the strain rates, using interseismic Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations. The robustness of the strain rate model was validated by comparing previous studies. We then analyzed the seismic hazard in North China based on the strain rates and b-values and determined the regions with relatively high seismic hazard potentials. The results suggested that large strain rates are mainly concentrated on the western border of the Ordos Block and the Tangshan fault zone. Different strain rate parameters yielded similar spatial distributions of recurrence intervals with different magnitudes. We further revealed that the western border of the Ordos Block and Tangshan fault regions exhibit relatively short (∼7000–15,000 year) ML 7.5 earthquake recurrence times, compared with those of other regions in North China. Although the results obtained in this study were limited by the completeness of earthquake records, the spatial distribution of the GNSS observation, the assumption of elastic strain accumulation, and the complexity of the mechanisms of intraplate earthquakes, our findings will contribute to the assessment of seismic hazards in North China.

Earthquake Monitoring and High-Resolution Velocity Tomography for the Central Longmenshan Fault Zone by a Temporary Dense Seismic Array

Abstract:The Longmenshan (LMS) fault zone is located at the junction of the eastern Tibetan Plateau and the Sichuan Basin, and is of great significance for studying regional tectonics and earthquake hazards. Although regional velocity models are available for the LMS fault zone, there lack high-resolution velocity models. Therefore, a dense array of 240 short-period seismometers was deployed around the central segment of the LMS fault zone for about 30 days for monitoring earthquakes and characterizing fine structures of the fault zone. Considering the large quantity of observed seismic data, the data processing workflow consists of deep learning based automatic earthquake detection, phase arrival picking and association. Compared to the earthquake catalog released from China Earthquake Administration, much more earthquakes are detected by the dense array. Double-difference seismic tomography is adopted to determine Vp, Vs and Vp/Vs models as well as earthquake locations. The checkerboard test shows that the velocity models have the spatial resolutions of ~5 km in the horizontal directions and 2 km in the depth. To the west of the Yingxiu-Beichuan fault (YBF), the Precambrian Pengguan complex is characterized by high velocity and low Vp/Vs values, where most of earthquakes occurred. In comparison, to the east of the YBF, the Upper Paleozoic to Jurassic sediments show low velocity and high Vp/Vs values, where few earthquakes occurred. Our results suggest that the earthquake activity in the LMS fault zone is controlled by the strength of rock compositions. Combined high-resolution velocity models with relocated earthquakes, we are also able to delineate fault geometry for different faults of the LMS fault zone.

Abstract:With the development of unconventional shale gas in the southern Sichuan Basin, seismicity in the region has increased significantly in recent years. Though the existing sparse regional seismic stations can capture most earthquakes with \begin{document}$ {M}_{\mathrm{L}}\ge 2.5 $\end{document}, a great number of smaller earthquakes are often omitted due to limited detection capacity. With the advent of portable seismic nodes, many dense arrays for monitoring seismicity in the unconventional oil and gas fields have been deployed, and the magnitudes of those earthquakes are key to understand the local fault reactivation and seismic potentials. However, the current national standard for determining the local magnitudes was not specifically designed for monitoring stations in close proximity, utilizing a calibration function with a minimal resolution of 5 km in the epicentral distance. That is, the current national standard tends to overestimate the local magnitudes for stations within short epicentral distances, and can result in discrepancies for dense arrays. In this study, we propose a new local magnitude formula which corrects the overestimated magnitudes for shorter distances, yielding accurate event magnitudes for small earthquakes in the Changning−Zhaotong shale gas field in the southern Sichuan Basin, monitored by dense seismic arrays in close proximity. The formula is used to determine the local magnitudes of 7,500 events monitored by a two-phased dense array with several hundred 5 Hz 3C nodes deployed from the end of February 2019 to early May 2019 in the Changning−Zhaotong shale gas field. The magnitude of completeness (\begin{document}$ {M}_{\mathrm{C}} $\end{document}) using the dense array is −0.1, compared to \begin{document}$ {M}_{\mathrm{C}} $\end{document} 1.1 by the sparser Chinese Seismic Network (CSN). In addition, using a machine learning detection and picking procedure, we successfully identify and process some 14,000 earthquakes from the continuous waveforms, a ten-fold increase over the catalog recorded by CSN for the same period, and the \begin{document}$ {M}_{\mathrm{C}} $\end{document} is further reduced to −0.3 from −0.1 compared to the catalog obtained via manual processing using the same dense array. The proposed local magnitude formula can be adopted for calculating accurate local magnitudes of future earthquakes using dense arrays in the shale gas fields of the Sichuan Basin. This will help to better characterize the local seismic risks and potentials.
Tectonic Implication of the 2022 MS 6.9 Earthquake in Menyuan, Qinghai, China: Analysis of Precise Earthquake Locations and InSAR

Abstract:Precise earthquake locations and InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) deformation observation are the major methods to understand the earthquake occurrence and disaster-causing process. This paper proposes a processing framework for analyzing strong earthquake mechanisms from one-dimensional velocity inversion to precise earthquake locations combined with InSAR deformation observation, and discusses earthquake-generating fault and dynamic mechanisms of tectonic deformation. We analyzed the Menyuan Ms 6.9 earthquake in 2022 and discuss the historical seismic activities and corresponding stress adjustment processes in the research region. To analyze and study the seismogenic structure and mechanism of the earthquake, we investigated the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the Menyuan earthquake sequence and analyzed the InSAR coseismic deformation field. We obtained the precise locations of the main shock and aftershocks and the coseismic InSAR deformation field of the main shock. It was confirmed that the Ms 6.9 earthquake was a shallow sinistral strike-slip earthquake, which led to the sequential activation of the Tuolaishan and Lenglongling faults. The main seismogenic fault of the mainshock was the northwestern end of the Lenglongling fault, and the earthquake rupture was segmented. It can be inferred that the earthquake was a stress-adjusted event triggered in the Qilian-Haiyuan tectonic belt caused by the northeasterly push of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The risk of moderate to high earthquakes in the region remains high in the future, requiring enhanced seismic observations.
Viscoelastic simulation of deep tectonic deformation of the Longmenshan fault zone and its implication for strong earthquakes

Abstract:The 2008 M(w)7. 9 Wenchuari earthquake ruptured the middle and northern segments of the Longmenshan faults zone (LMSFZ) at the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Prior to this earthquake, the LMSFZ had been seismically quiet for several centuries, where no hints suggest such a M similar to 8. 0 earthquake might strike the area. The long-term geological investigations and short-term geodetic measurements before the Wenchuan earthquake generally agree that the horizontal slip rate along the LMSFZ is very limited. The low deformation rate observed at the surface around the LMSFZ may not reflect the true deep deformation where the devastating Wenchuan earthquake nucleated. The slip rates at depth derived from seismological investigation of repeating microearthquakes were found to be systematically larger than those observed on the surface. In order to validate the depth-related slip rate pattern, based on regional tectonic characteristics of the LMSFZ, a two-dimensional viscoelastic finite-element model with contact algorithm is established to simulate the evolution process of the crust and upper mantle during an earthquake cycle. The viscoelastic creep and discontinuity contact relationships in the crust and upper mantle are taking into account. Our primary results confirm the depth-related lateral slip rate pattern around the LMSFZ revealed by the seismological observations of repeating earthquakes. Furthermore, the LMSFZ and its surrounding regions are prone to accumulation of strain and strain rate potential with the highest stress concentration area of 5 similar to 19 km depth, suggesting that this area may essentially nucleate strong earthquakes over time, depending on the bilateral rheology structure of the lower crust and upper mantle. At the same time, the large strain rate accommodated at depth can explain the occurrence of the unanticipated Wenchuan M(w)7. 9 earthquake in 2008. It is found that the slip deficit area in the northeastern Japan subduction zone estimated from repeating earthquakes is very consistent with the rupture zone of the 2011 M-w 9. 0 Tohoku-oki earthquake. We suggest that slip rates at seismogenic depths are of critical importance in seismic hazard analysis. The reoccurrence frequency of repeating earthquakes can be regarded as the "subsurface creepmeters" to measure the in-situ deep slip rate of tectonic deformation.

Abstract:Quantifying the source, propagation path, and site characteristics accurately is pivotal for evaluating regional earthquake hazards. The nonparametric generalized inversion technique of strong‐motion records offers an effective approach for analyzing these three fundamental elements. However, this technique might overlook the spatial variation of regional attenuation and the inherent uncertainty of reference stations. To enhance the understanding of strong ground motion characteristics in the Sichuan area, this study employs an improved nonparametric inversion scheme to analyze 3338 sets of strong‐motion data from 397 earthquakes (Ms 3–6.5) that occurred in the Sichuan region between 2007 and 2020. In terms of regional source characteristics, the setting of low‐frequency cutoffs in strong‐motion records may lead to the overestimation of corner frequency and stress drop for earthquakes with higher magnitudes. Conversely, for events with moment magnitudes less than 5, the regional stress drop levels tend to stabilize as the magnitude increases. Furthermore, stress drop is independent of depth and fault type. Regarding path attenuation, considering the influence of Moho reflection, the geometric attenuation is limited to R−1 within a hypocentral distance of 75 km. The nonparametric results from 75 to 300 km show that as the hypocentral distance increases, the geometric attenuation in this region first decreases and then stabilizes. Furthermore, the mean level of the inelastic attenuation factor Qs is 199.5f0.98. Pertaining to site effects, we observe that at the edge of the Sichuan basin, the amplification of sites in the long‐period part is clearly characterized and tends to stabilize with increasing frequency. In addition, the site amplification factor of 33 logarithmically spaced frequency points between 0.5 and 20 Hz has a linear relationship with the soil layer parameter VS30 or VS20. The correlation coefficients of both show moderate correlation, among which VS30 is slightly better than VS20.

Abstract:Introduction: Identifying and quantifying earthquake precursors, and analyzing their physical mechanisms, continues to be a challenge for earthquake forecasting. In this study, orthogonal functions were developed to effectively identify precursor anomalies, thereby improving the forecasting of strong earthquakes. Methods: To study the spatio-temporal contour anomalies in seismic strain fields, we assessed them for seismic activity variables and natural orthogonal function expansion, in six strong earthquakes near the Longmenshan Fault Zone, China, that have occurred since 2008. Results: We observed that, prior to these earthquakes, the temporal factor (the time variation characteristics of the strain field) displayed anomalies with high/low values exceeding the mean square error within a stable context. The anomalies exhibited multi-component characteristics and were primarily concentrated in the first four-strain fields. Short-term and impending-earthquake anomalies were observed in the temporal factor before the 2008 Wenchuan ( M 8.0) and 2013 Lushan ( M 7.0) earthquakes, while medium-term and long-term anomalies appeared before the other four strong earthquakes, without notable short-term anomalies. The temporal evolution of strain field contour anomalies, and the strain contours positive and negative intersection, showed that central areas surrounded by multiple strain field contour anomalies were potential locations for strong earthquakes. This suggests a potential approach for earthquake location forecasting. Since 2009, there have been five strong earthquakes, each affected to varying degrees by anomalous strain fields from the 2008 Wenchuan ( M 8.0) earthquake. Conclusion: The results of this study corroborate the findings of the focal mechanism's node shear stress, indicating significant physical implications of the anomalies and the reliability of these conclusion.

Abstract:On May 12, 2008, an M(w)7.9 earthquake occurred in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, China. Movement of Yingxiu-Beichuan Fault in the Longmenshan Fault Zone was considered to be the main cause of the earthquake. Earthquakes are closely related to fault activities. Therefore, studying the strain distribution and evolution process around active fault zones is important to the understanding of seismic activities. In this study, we conduct laboratory experiments with uniaxial compression applied to marble sheets with intentionally fabricated cracks. The speckle patterns of the rock samples under different loading conditions are recorded in real time by a digital camera. To calculate the deformation fields of the deliberately cracked marble sheets during different stages of the loading processes, the recorded images are processed by the digital image correlation method. The distribution and variation of the displacement and strain are further analyzed in order to understand the strain localization of and observed damage in the experimental fracture zones. Finally, we compare these laboratory results with the GPS-observed coseismic displacements during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, to assess the consistency between our laboratory observations and the field observations of the earthquake, but also to suggest how laboratory results can improve thinking about how earthquake patterns do and do not reflect fault patterns.
GPS Measurements and Tectonics Activity Simulation of Present-day Crustal Deformation in China's Capital Region

Abstract:An accurate crustal deformation field is derived from repeat surveys of 280 GPS stations during 1992-2004 in China's capital region. It shows that the horizontal rate relative to stable Euro-Asia plate ranges from 4 mm/a in the north to 9 mm/a in the south. Boundary element method (BEM) and displacement discontinuity method (DDM) are used to establish a 3D faults construction of the capital region. The faults slip is calculated and the displacement of GPS sites is simulated in a linear-elastic, homogeneous and isotropic half-space. Consequently, the quasi-static displacement, strain and stress fields of main active fault surfaces and profiles in earth's surface, 15 km and 25 km underground in capital region are computed. The results indicate that the difference of GPS measurements and simulations is 0. 68 mm and 0.77 mm along NS and EW, respectively. The tectonics activities of main faults are weaker during 1992-2004. The profile strain is proportional to the depth underground.
