Abstract:High-purity and bulk-quantity boron nitride spheres have been successfully synthesized at 1400 degrees C via a polymer-chemical route with about 40% yield. The as-prepared products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, conventional transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Abstract:The current approaches used to fabricate hexagonal boron nitrides (h-BN) from boron trioxide and urea always results in contamination of the h-BN product with carbon/oxygen. Thus, discovering a facile way of mass producing high-purity h-BN remains a challenge. A simple yet highly efficient thermal treatment approach to large-scale fabrication of nanoporous h-BN with high yield, high purity, and high crystallinity is described using NaNH2 and NaBH4 as the oxygen- and carbon-free precursors. The unique properties of inorganic metal salts, i.e., high melting point and strong electrostatic interaction with carbon substrates, render this strategy suitable for the production of homogeneous h-BN/mesoporous carbon and h-BN/carbon nanotube heterostructures of high crystallinity, high h-BN dispersity, and with a strong interfacial effect. These unique features make them promising candidates for supercapacitor applications, resulting a significantly enhanced specific capacitance. This study provides new insight into the fabrication of high-purity h-BN and h-BN-based heterostructures thus expanding their application in the field of energy storage and transformation.

Abstract:Boron nitride hollow spheres were synthesized by the reaction of BBr3 and NaNH2 at room temperature; X-ray powder diffraction pattern could be indexed as hexagonal BN with the lattice constants of a=2.482 and c=6.701Å; high-resolution transmission electron microscopy image showed the hollow spheres consisted of BN nanoparticles, with diameter between 80 and 300 nm; a possible formation mechanism of BN hollow spheres was discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we describe the large-scale synthesis of inorganic fullerene-like (IF-like) hexagonal boron nitride with vessel, hollow sphere, peanut, and onion structures by reacting BBr(3) with the synergic nitrogen sources NaNH(2) and NH(4)Cl at 400-450 degrees C for 6-12 h. The composition of products could be confirmed to be pure boron nitride with hexagonal structures by the XRD patterns and FT-IR, XPS, and EDXA spectra. The representative HRTEM images clearly reveal the layerlike features of the products. Here, the peanut-like structure of the IF-like BN is reported for the first time, and added to the list as one kind of new morphology of BN nanomaterials. The similarity in the structure between h-BN and graphite is responsible for the formation of IF-like BN with nanostructures of vessels, hollow spheres, peanuts, and onions.

Abstract:A moderate chemical method [i.e., the reaction of diborane (B 2 H 6 ) and a mixture gas of ammonia and nitrogen (NH 3 /N 2 ) over nanoscale iron boride at 1100 °C] was developed to explore the boron nitride (BN) nanostructures. The products were well characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Two types of novel core–shell nanocapsules of amorphous boron core encapsulated in crystalline boron nitride shell were obtained. The first one looked like a peanut with an amorphous B core containing a trace of BN crystallites, a transition layer of BN nanofibers and amorphous B, and a thornlike shell of BN nanofibers. The second one looked like a perfect sphere consisting of a pure amorphous B core and a rather smooth crystalline BN shell. These results not only provided us a new chemical method for preparing BN nanostructures but also enriched the important BN nanostructures family. A growth mechanism is also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) particles including hollow spheres (with a proportion of ~30–40%) and nanotubes (10%) have been synthesized by using sodium fluoroborate and sodium azide at 450°C for 20h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies show that the as-obtained BN hollow particles are crystalline. The total specific surface area of the product calculated from Brunauer–Emmentt–Teller (BET) absorption measurement is 89.79m2/g, indicating that it may be utilized as a promising candidate for hydrogen storage container or catalyst. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) result reveals its excellent thermal stability below 800°C. Its possible growth mechanism and the effects of reaction parameters were also briefly discussed.

Abstract:High-purity BCN hollow spheres were produced by pyrolyzing a simple polymeric precursor at 1000 degrees C. The chemical bonding states of the BCN spheres were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. SEM and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that the BCN hollow spheres have good spherical morphology and crystallinity.

Abstract:Boron nitride flakes and hollow spheres were synthesized by coreduction of NH4Cl and BBr3 using sodium as reductant. Xray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern could be indexed as hexagonal BN. The X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were used to determine the composition ratio, which is B:N = 1:1.05. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed flake-like and hollow spherical morphology.

Abstract:A method for the synthesis of boron nitride (BN) fullerene-like nanoparticles (FNPs) and (BN) x C y nanotubes in large quantities using carbon nanotubes as templates is presented. Boron oxide vapor was reacted with nitrogen gas in the presence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at 1573 K in a boron nitride crucible to form BN-FNPs and BN-C nanotubes. FNPs usually display a clear polyhedral morphology with an inner hollow space. The shell thickness and inner empty spaces of these FNPs typically range from 2–8 nm and 5–25 nm, respectively. The (BN) x C y nanotubes have diameters and lengths similar to the starting CNTs, but have much more ordered structures. The growth mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:In this study, cube-like LaB6 was synthesized by Mg coreduction of LaCl3 and B20,3. Then, boron nitride nanoboxes (BNNBs) were produced by nitriding cube-like LaB6, and the latter is not only played as boron source, but also as hard template. The results of characterization (transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy) indicate that the BN products are hollow structures, the diameter of the nanoboxes is in the range of 200-1000 nm, and the wall thickness of the BN nanoboxes is 16 nm. The specific surface area of BN nanoboxes is 45 m2/g, the pore size is mainly located at 10 nm, and the total pore volume is 0.16 cm3/g. The nitriding of cube-like LaB6 into hollow BNNBs here would provide an alternative route for the synthesis of other hollow BN architectures by other boron-containing materials.

Abstract:Hollow microspheres constructed by single-crystalline hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoplates have been synthesized via a facile chemical vapour reaction route employing ammonia borane as a starting material. The as-synthesized products are extensively characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The hollow microspheres are in nest-like morphology with diameters of similar to 3 mu m and are composed of numerous single-crystalline h-BN nanoplates of 200-500 nm in diameter and 10-30 nm in thickness. The dependence of the morphology of the BN hollow microspheres on experimental parameters, such as reaction temperature, holding time and gas pressure, is systematically investigated. The reaction temperature and holding time are proved to be key parameters to tailor the morphology of the final products. Controlled experiments indicate that the growth process of the BN hollow microspheres involves the formation of smooth bowl-shaped hollow microspheres and their subsequent growth into the hierarchical ones. The BN hollow microspheres exhibit intense cathodoluminescence emissions in the region of 200 to 400 nm, indicating that they could be potentially used as compact ultraviolet (UV) laser emitters.

Abstract:Novel BN hollow microspheres have been successfully fabricated by a facile chemical vapour reaction approach using ammonia-borane as a precursor. The morphology and structure of the as-synthesized products are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), as well as electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The hollow microspheres have open mouths and are 0.5-6 mu m in diameter. The walls of the hollow spheres with thicknesses ranging from 200 to 800 nm are composed of poorly crystallized BN. The growth mechanism of the hollow microspheres is investigated and a growth model is proposed. The BN hollow spheres show pronounced resonant Raman scattering character under illumination of a 457.9 nm laser line, which implies a potential photothermal effect. The hollow microspheres also exhibit intense cathodoluminescence emissions in the region of 200-400 nm, indicating that they could be potentially used as compact ultraviolet laser emitters. Moreover, the unique open-mouth feature, in combination with the superior thermal and chemical stability of BN, makes the BN hollow microspheres potential candidates as microreactors for investigations of high-temperature space-confined chemical reactions.

Abstract:Nanotwinned cubic boron nitride (nt-cBN) with remarkable hardness, toughness, and stability has attracted widespread attention due to its distinct scientific and industrial importance. The key for nt-cBN synthesis is to adopt an onion-like BN (oBN) nano-precursor and induce phase transition under high pressure. Here, we found that the size change of oBN used greatly affected the mechanical performance of products. With the precursor size decreasing from ~320 to 90 nm, the Vickers hardness of nanostructured products improved from 61 to 108 GPa, due to the fact that large oBN nanoparticles possessed more flattened, orderly and graphite-like shell layers, in sharp contrast to the highly wrinkled and imperfect layers in small-diameter nanoparticles, thus resulting in the apparent reduction of ultrafine-twin substructure in the synthetic products. This study reveals that only small oBN precursor could produce complete ultrafine nt-cBN with outstanding performance. A practical route was proposed to further improve the performance of this important material.

Abstract:A novel chemical route has been established for the synthesis of ultraviolet luminescent turbostratic boron nitride (t-BN) powders, by the reaction of NH4BF4 with NaNH2 at 320°C for 10h, and the yield is as high as 90%. The synthesized brown–yellow samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, FT-IR, SAED, and HRTEM, which matched with t-BN. The electronic and optical properties of the product were investigated by PL and UV absorption. UV spectra revealed that the product has two obvious band gaps (∼5.8 and 4.6eV) and PL spectra showed that it has an ultraviolet emission at 337nm(λex=260nm). SEM image indicated that the particle size of the synthesized t-BN is mainly in the range of 1–10μm. The renascent BF3 and Na3N intermediates are believed to be responsible for the growth of t-BN under mild conditions.

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) powders with near-spherical particles of more than 10 mu m were synthesized by templated carbothermal reduction and nitridation. The effects of processing factors, such as raw material mixing methods, C/B2O3 molar ratios, and carbon templates, were systematically studied, and the reaction mechanism was discussed. The experimental results showed that the integrity and morphology of the carbon templates was usually destroyed during ball milling or grinding, but preserved during magnetic stirring. The morphology of synthesized BN particles depended on the C/B2O3 molar ratio in starting reactant mixtures and gradually changed from sheet-like to near-spherical shape with decreasing C/B2O3 molar ratio. The morphology and size of synthesized BN particles agreed with that of the carbon templates, which means that the morphology and size of synthesized BN particles can be tailored by controlling that of the carbon template. The BN near-spherical particles synthesized in this work may be used as thermally conductive fillers for electronic packaging.

Abstract:Novel rose-like BN nanostructures were synthesized on a large scale via a two-step procedure. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer and nitrogen porosimetry. The results show that the obtained rose-like nanostructures are composed of a large amount of h-BN crystalline flakes and have a surface area of 90.31m2/g. A mechanism was proposed to explain the formation process of the rose-like BN nanostructures.
