Abstract:ABSTRACT A macrocyclic 1,3-di(1-dodecyloxy)-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (DodCalix[4]C6) was synthesized and characterized. The extraction of Cs(I) and more than 10 typical metals with DodCalix[4]C6/octanol in HNO3 medium was investigated. DodCalix[4]C6 exhibited strong extraction ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over others except for Rb(I). The optimum acidity in Cs(I) extraction was 3.0 M HNO3. The Cs(I) separation from a simulated highly active liquid waste by five-stage countercurrent extraction was performed. The extraction efficiency of Cs(I) for five-stage extraction was greater than 99%. The effective partitioning of Cs(I) by DodCalix[4]C6/octanol through multistage countercurrent extraction was achieved.

Abstract:A new supermolecular recognition agent named tetra - tert -butyl-calix[4]-bis[(4-methly-1,2-phenylene-crown-6] ( Tert ButylCalixC) was synthesized. Batchwise experiments of extraction of Na(I), K(I), Rb(I), Cs(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Ru(III) and Fe(III) from aqueous solution with Tert ButylCalixC/ o -nitroanisole were carried out. Effects of HNO 3 concentration, contact time and temperature on the extraction behavior were examined. The equilibrium established within 30 min implied a fast extraction kinetics. The optimal operation temperature was 298 K. Stoichiometry of Tert ButylCalixC and Cs(I) by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry characterization revealed 1:1 molar ratio. It was observed that the extraction system of Tert ButylCalixC/ o -nitroanisole was effective for selective removal of Cs(I), showing remarkable separation performance.

Abstract:A new macrocyclic calix[4]arene-bis[(4-methyl-1,2-phenylene)-crown-6] (CalixBisMePhC) was synthesized. An extraction study of Cs(I), Na(I), K(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Pd(II), and Ru(III) with CalixBisMePhC/CHCl3 was investigated by examining the effects of contact time, HNO3 concentration, and temperature. The results showed that due to the effective molecular recognition, CalixBisMePhC/CHCl3 had excellent extraction ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over the tested metals except Rb(I). The maximum distribution ratio for Cs(I) was found at the HNO3 concentration of 4.4 mol.kg(-1). The composition of the extracted species of Cs(I) was determined to be CsNO3 center dot 0.5CalixBisMePhC center dot 0.5HNO(3) by a slope method. Some valuable parameters for the Cs(I) extraction were obtained. The results demonstrated that the CalixBisMePhC/CHCl3 extraction system is promising to partition Cs(I) from highly level liquid waste.

The optimum acidity in the extraction of Cs(I) was 4.0 mol.kg(-1) HNO3. The extraction property and mechanism of Cs(I) were discussed. The composition of the extracted species of Cs(I) with NonCalix[4]C6 was determined as CsNO3 center dot NonCalix[4]C6. Valuable chemical engineering parameters in the extraction of Cs(I) were obtained. It is beneficial to effectively partition Cs(I) from highly active liquid waste with the NonCalix[4]C6/1-octanol extraction system.

Abstract:Abstract A new macrocyclic supramolecular recognition agent, 1,3-di(1-decyloxy)-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (DecylCalix[4]C6), was synthesized by a multistep reaction through separation and purification by column chromatography packed with silica gel. The extraction behavior of some representative fission and non-fission products such as La(III), Y(III), Cs(I), Rb(I), Pd(II), Mo(VI), Zr(IV), Sr(II), Ba(II), Ru(III), Na(I), and K(I), which were contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW), with DecylCalix[4]C6/1-octanol in HNO3 medium was investigated, in particular by examining the impact of contact time, the HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.4 to 5.0 M, and the temperature. DecylCalix[4]C6 showed excellent extraction ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over the tested metals except for Rb(I). It was attributed to the effective recognition and complxation of DecylCalix[4]C6 for Cs(I). The optimum HNO3 concentration for the Cs(I) extraction was 3.0 M. Abstract:25,27-Bis(1-hexyloxy)-calix[4]arene-26,28-crown-6 (HexylCalix[4]C6) was synthesized. A new macroporous silica-based composite material, HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2, was prepared through impregnation and immobilization of HexylCalix[4]C6 into the SiO2-P particles. The adsorption of 17 species of typical metals onto HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2 in the range of 0.3-5.0 M HNO3 was investigated. The material exhibited strong adsorption ability and excellent selectivity for Cs(I) over all the tested metals except for Rb(I) and Pd(II). The optimum HNO3 concentration and the adsorption mechanism of Cs(I) onto the material were discussed. The solubility of HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2 in aqueous phase was evaluated by total organic carbon (TOC). The technical feasibility of application of Hexyl Calix[4]C6@SiO2 in Cs(I) separation was confirmed.
Synthesis and sensing behavior of cyanoanthracene modified 1,3-alternate calix[4]benzocrown-6: a new class of Cs+ selective optical sensors

Abstract:1,3-Calix[4]bis (10-cyano-9-anthrylmethyl-o-benzocrown-6) AnCN2, and 1,3-calix[4]-25,27-bis(allyloxy)-26,28-(10-cyano-9-anthrylmethyl-o-benzocrown-6), AnCN1, were synthesized as the first generation of Cs+ selective optical sensors based on calixarenes. The maximum enhancement in the emission of AnCN2 and AnCN1 upon Cs' complexation was 11.7 and 8.2 in a 1 : 1 CH2Cl2-MeOH mixture. Their response to Various alkali metal ions follows the order Cs+ > Rb+ >> K+ >> Na+ > Li+ indicating good selectivity towards caesium. The fluorescence and absorption profile for CS' complexation suggest a 1 : 1 stoichiometry for the host AnCN1-Cs complex and a stability constant of 10(7) M-1. AnCN2, on the other hand, shows two plateau regions corresponding to a 1 : 2 stoichiometry for complexation of Cs'. The first complexation constant is much higher (10(7) M-1) than the second one (10(4) M-1). The NMR studies further substantiate the complexation of two metal ions by AnCN2. This is the first report of stepwise complexation of metal ions to a 1,3-alternate calix[4]bis(crown-6) derivative.
Synthesis and Characterization of a Cesium-Selective Macroporous Silica-Based Supramolecular Recognition Material with High Stability

Abstract:To design new and efficient supramolecular recognition material, a macroporous organic–inorganic bis(n-amyloxy)calix[4]arene-crown-6 (BnACalix[4]C6) material for separation of cesium from acidic solution was developed. The results of SEM, TG–DSC, FT-IR, 29Si NMR, and XRD characterizations indicated that BnACalix[4]C6 molecules were successfully impregnated into the pores of SiO2–P support. Cs(I) was shown to be both strongly and selectively adsorbed by this material at 3.0 M HNO3. The total organic carbon values showed that the leakage of BnACalix[4]C6 from BnACalix[4]C6/SiO2–P was below 0.1 %. Thus, BnACalix[4]C6/SiO2–P is a promising candidate for separation of Cs(I) from acidic HAW in SPEC process.

Abstract:A macroporous silica-based 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (Calix[4]arene-R14) supramolecular recognition polymeric composite, (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P, was synthesized. The synthesis was performed by impregnation and immobilization of Calix[4]arene-R14 and methyloctyl-2-dimethylbutanemide (MODB) molecules in the pores of a macroporous SiO2-P polymeric particle support with a mean diameter of 50 mu m. MODB was used to modify the Calix[4]arene-R14 through intermolecular interaction force. The static-state adsorption of sortie typical alkali metals and alkaline-earth metals such as Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), and Ba(II) onto (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P was investigated. The effects of contact time, HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.3-7.0 M, and temperature on the adsorption were examined. (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P exhibited strong adsorption ability and excellent selectivity for Cs(I) over all tested elements, which showed weak or almost no adsorption except for Rb(I). The adsorption onto (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P of the tested metals in HNO3 medium was exothermic. The thermodynamic parameters for the adsorptions of Cs(I) and Rb(I) were determined. It was found that, in 3.0 M HNO3, application of the (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P polymeric composite in the partitioning of Cs(I), one of the heat generators, from highly active liquid waste in the SPEC (strontium/cesium partitioning from HLW by extraction chromatography) process is promising.

Abstract:We have synthesized two derivatives of alkylanthracene covalently bonded to 1,3-alternate calix[4]aza-crown-6 at the nitrogen position to study the effect of alkali metal ion complexation on the emission properties of anthracene fluorophore. The mono- and dianthryl-substituted probes are weakly fluorescent because their emission is partially quenched by photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from the nitrogen lone pair to the excited singlet state of anthracene. Upon complexation of alkali metal ions (e.g. K+, Cs+) by the crown moiety, the nitrogen lone pair can no longer participate in the PET process causing an enhancement in the emission of anthracene fluorophore (fluorescent turn on). The maximum fluorescence enhancement observed upon complexation of cesium ions by mono- and dianthryl-substituted calix[4]aza-crown-6 relative to the uncomplexed form was 8.5- and 11.6-fold, respectively.

Abstract:To separate Cs(I), a new silica-calix[4]biscrown hybrid material, 1,3-calix[4]arene-bis(naph-crown-6) (CalixBNaphC)@SiO2-P, was synthesized by impregnation in situ and immobilization of agent into the pores of the SiO2-P particles. The materials were characterized by SEM images, FT-IR spectra, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and Si-29 solid-state CP/MAS NMR The adsorption of Cs(I) and some typical metals onto CalixBNaphC@SiO2-P was investigated by examining the effect of contact time and HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.4-6.0 M. Enrichment and recovery of Cs(I) in batch experiments were performed by six adsorption and desorption cycles. The removal of Cs(I) was more than 99.1%. Based on the batch results, the chromatographic separation of Cs(I) from 3.0 M HNO3 was conducted by CalixBNaphC@SiO2-P packed column. The effective separation of Cs(I) was achieved utilizing 3.0 M HNO3 and water as eluents. A new process entitled PCEC (Partitioning of Cesium by Extraction Chromatography) for individual separation of Cs(I) was developed. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Cesium, one of the heat-emitting fission elements contained in high active liquid waste, deserved separation. Calix bis crown is a class of chemical compounds, promising in the cesium extraction. In this study, calix[4]- bis [(4- tert -butyl-1,2-phenylene)-crown-6] (CalixBBC for short) was synthesized by a multi-step scheme. The cesium extraction study was carried out using CalixBBC in two organic diluents such as chloroform and o -nitroanisole, which were used as electron-deficient and electron-rich surrogate dilutions, respectively. The effects of HNO 3 concentration, mixing time, temperature were investigated using a batch technique. Comparing with chloroform, o -nitroanisole was in favor of cesium extraction. Both extractions strongly relied on HNO 3 concentration in the range of 0.4–6.0 M. The pseudo-second-order model fitted the extractions well. Both extractions were spontaneous, exothermal processes. The foreigner metal ions showed little influence on the extraction. The stoichiometry of cesium and CalixBBC in the complex was 1:1.

Abstract:A novel macroporous polymer-based 25,27-bis(iso-propyloxy)calix[4]arene-26,28-crown-6 (BiPCalix[4]C6) supramolecular recognition material, BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7, was synthesized. It was performed by vacuum impregnation and immobilization of BiPCalix[4] C6 into the pores of the macroporous XAD-7 particles. The composition and structure were characterized using SEM, BET, TG-DSC, FT-IR, and XRD, respectively. The adsorption of some typical metals contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW) such as Ru(III), Mo(VI), K(I), Rb(I), Cs(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), La(III), and Y(III) onto the BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7 materials was investigated. The effects of the HNO3 concentration and contact time on the adsorption of the tested metals were evaluated. It was found that at the optimum concentration of 4.0 M HNO3, BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7 exhibited excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over all the other tested metals, which showed weak or almost no adsorption except Rb(I). It demonstrated that application of the polymer-based supramolecular recognition material, BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7, in partitioning of Cs(I) from HLW is promising.

Extraction Equilibrium of Typical Alkali Metals with a Macrocyclic Calixbiscrown Derivative in Two-Phase System HNO3/o-Nitroanisole and HNO3/HCCl3

Abstract:A neutral extractant, tetra(tert-butyl)-calix[4]bis[(4,4'-dimethyl-1,2-phenelyene)-crown-6] (TTCalixB6), was prepared. The extraction equilibrium of Cs(I), Na(I), K(I), and Rb(I) and some coexisting metals Sr(II), Ba(II), Fe(III), and Ru(III) with TTCalixB6 was investigated in the range of 0.42-6.0 M HNO3. The effects of two types of organic diluents o-nitroanisole, an electron donor, and chloroform, an electron acceptor, on the extraction of TTCalixB6 were examined. It showed a high extraction ability for Cs(I) in HNO3/o-nitroanisole over others in HNO3/chloroform. The association of TTCalixB6 with HNO3 and chloroform through hydrogen bonding was the reason why Cs(I) extraction decreased in HNO3/chloroform. The composition of Cs(I)-extracted species was a 1:1 type of the complex, CsNO3 center dot TTCalixB6, determined by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. More than 98% of Cs(I) alone with less than 5% of Rb(I) were extracted with TTCalixB6/o-nitroanisole based on a separation framework. The thermodynamic parameters Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, and Delta S degrees and some fundamental chemical engineering data of TTCalixB6 extraction were obtained. TTCalixB6/o-nitroanisole is promising to apply in Cs(I) removal from a high-level liquid waste.

Abstract:Synthesis procedure of various intermediates of bis(2-propyloxy)calix[4]crown-6(l,3-alernate) was suggested and studied. They are p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene, calix[4]arene, bis(2-propyloxy)calix[4]arene, triethylene glycol dichloride, pentaethylene glycol and oligoethylene glycol ditosylate. All the compounds are determined mainly by IR and 1H NMR.

The simultaneous partitioning of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from a simulated highly active liquid waste was performed by Calix[4]@DBC/ SiO2-P packed column. They were effectively eluted with water and flowed into effluent along with Rb(I) and Ba(II), while others showed no adverse impact. Abstract:To separate Cs(I) from highly active liquid waste, a macroporous silica-based 25, 27-bis(iso-propyloxy)calix[4]arene-26,28-crown-6 (BiPCalix[4]C6) supramolecular recognition material, BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2–P, was synthesized and characterized by SEM, FT-IR, and TG-DSC. The adsorption properties of BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2–P and a macroporous polymer-based supramolecular recognition composite, BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7, were compared. It was found that BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2–P exhibited better adsorption ability and faster adsorption dynamics than BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7. The adsorption isotherm of Cs(I) onto BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2–P was studied at 298 K and it was well described by Langmuir isotherm model. The complex composition between BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2–P and Cs(I) was determined as 1:1 type by investigating the effect of the concentrations of BiPCalix[4]C6, Cs(I), and H+ on the adsorption. Meanwhile, the selectivity of BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2–P towards Na(I), K(I), Rb(I), Cs(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Ru(III), Mo(VI), La(III), and Y(III) was investigated.
Uptake Of Cesium And Some Typical Metals Onto Hybrid Calix[4]Crown Adsorbent With Silica Carrier By Host-Guest Recognition

Abstract:A new silica adsorbent, C7C6CalixSi, was prepared by intermolecular hybridization. It was achieved by introducing and immobilizing a macrocyclic C7C6Calix into the pores of the hybrid silica carrier specially developed. FT-IR, SME, TG-DSC, BET, and XAR were utilized to characterize the structure of the adsorbent. C7C6Calix was successfully introduced into the macroporous silica carrier by self-assembly. The adsorption of Cs and other typical metals toward C7C6CalixSi was investigated in the range of 0.4 to 5.0 M HNO3 center dot C7C6CalixSi had an excellent adsorption ability and selectivity for Cs over others, except for Rb. The adsorption capacity of Cs was 0.1233 mM/g at the optimal adsorption conditions of 1.0 M HNO3, 298 K, and a contact time of 120 min. The experimental results fitted well with the Langmuir model. The thermodynamic parameters Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, and Delta S degrees of Cs uptake were obtained. The stability of C7C6CalixSi was evaluated by TOC content. Some valuable adsorption data of the silica adsorbent in the chemical engineering were obtained. The results revealed that C7C6CalixSi is promising for Cs removal.
