Abstract:In this paper some finite element methods for Timoshenko beam, circular arch and Reissner-Mindlin plate problems are discussed. To avoid locking phenomenon, the reduced integration technique is used and a bubble function space is added to increase the solution accuracy. The method for Timoshenko beam is aligned with the Petrov-Galerkin formulation derived in Loula et al. (1987) and can be naturally extended to solve the circular arch and the Reissner-Mindlin plate problems. Optimal order error estimates are proved, uniform with respect to the small parameters. Numerical examples for the circular arch problem shows that the proposed method compares favorably with the conventional reduced integration method.

Abstract:A new theory for nonlinear analysis of shear-deformable circular arches is derived, in which Timoshenko’s assumption on the deformation of cross-section and the Green strains are adopted. In the variational equation, the nonlinear energy of the shear and the transverse normal stresses is included. Substituting the internal forces from linear analysis, a set of linearized equations is derived for buckling analysis of shear deformable arches. These equations are then used to solve the buckling of circular arches and rings under three types of radial pressures to compare the various results appeared in the literature. Linear analysis is carried out on hinged arches under uniform radial pressure to check the changes of displacements and internal forces after the shear deformation is considered. It is found that the axial force is more uniform along the arch length when shear deformation is considered, and the bending moment and shear force are smaller, but the displacements are always larger. Buckling of arches under radial pressure under various boundary conditions are studied, buckling factors for symmetrical and anti-symmetrical buckling are tabulated, and approximate formulas for the critical loads are proposed. Abstract:The variable cross-section members have been widely used in engineering practice for many years ,thus it is necessary to investigate their element stiffness matrixes .In this paper ,based on the prin-ciple of potential energy ,the element stiffness matrix with approximation to second order are obtained , w here the change rates of both the flexural and shear stiffness are treated as infinitesimal quantities (or Infinitesimal) .It is noted that the effects of geometric nonlinearity due to axial force as well as shear de-formation is considered in the matrix .In addition ,based on the differential equilibrium equations of the members ,the flexural and shear displacements modes with approximation to second order ,expressed as cubic and quintic polynomial respectively ,are also obtained .Moreover ,the singularity of the element stiffness matrix and the expression of axial stiffness are discussed in detail .By comparing the obtained matrix results with some exact solutions ,it is indicated that the accuracy of the obtained element stiff-ness matrix can be guaranteed .Finally ,the convergence of this method is discussed by comparing with other methods in a case study .
Elastoplastic Analysis with Fine Beam Model of Vector Form Intrinsic Finite Element

Abstract:A new fine beam model of vector form intrinsic finite element is proposed to conduct elastoplastic analysis of beams with different depth-span ratios. Vector form intrinsic finite element is a new structural analysis method to compute large deformation, collision, and fracture problems. The presented fine beam model is different from Euler beam or Timoshenko beam. The coupled effects of multifactor are considered in this new model, such as shear deformation, additional axial displacement induced by additional rotation of cross section, and additional transverse displacements considering bending stiffness reduction due to shear deformation. Applying to vector form intrinsic finite element analysis, the formula of strain and internal force of this new beam model is derived. The plane cross-sectional assumption is also modified when the material is at plastic stage. Using the proposed model, computer programs are developed by Fortran. Comparison between the computational results by present method and numerical or experimental results in the literature shows that the present fine beam model of vector form intrinsic finite element is more efficient and accurate when the analyzed beam has a large depth-span ratio and material is at plastic stage.
Numerical Approximation and Error Analysis for the Timoshenko Beam Equations with Boundary Feedback

Abstract:In this paper, the numerical approximation of a Timoshenko beam with boundary feedback is considered. We derived a linearized three-level difference scheme on uniform meshes by the method of reduction of order for a Timoshenko beam with boundary feedback. It is proved that the scheme is uniquely solvable, unconditionally stable and second order convergent in L∞ norm by using the discrete energy method. A numerical example is presented to verify the theoretical results.

Then, based on the general solution in the case of distinct eigenvalues, a series of beam problems, including the problem of cantilever beam under uniform loads, cantilever beam with axial load and bending moment at the free end, cantilever beam under the first, second, third and fourth power ofx tangential loads, is solved by the superposition principle and trial-and-error methods.

Abstract:The proposed fine beam model is different from that of Euler beam and Timoshenko beam .Some effects were considered in the new model such as shear displacement ,the additional axial displacement produced by lateral bending and the additional transverse displacement produced by reduced stiffness due to transverse shear deformation .The formula of strain and internal force of the fine beam model ,applied to Vector Form Intrinsic Finite Element (VFIFE ) analysis ,were derived and corresponding programs were developed by Fortran language . Cantilever beam ,both ends clamped beam and portal frame are analyzed and the vertical displacements were compared using different beam element models .Numerical results showed that when the depth‐span ratio was relatively small ,the vertical displacements obtained by different beam model had slight difference .When the depth‐span ratio was larger ,the vertical displacement obtained by the fine beam model was obviously larger than that obtained by the Euler beam and Timoshenko beam . Therefore ,the shear displacement ,the additional axial displacement and the additional transverse displacement caused by stiffness reduction should not be ignored when the deep beam was analyzed .The new beam model proposed in this paper demonstrated more accurate results when the beam had a large depth‐span ratio .

Abstract:Based on the exact longitudinal displacement for thin-walled curved beams, a general theory for linear analysis of curved beams with any open sections is established in this paper by using the principle of virtual work. The differential equations of equilibrium and natural boundary conditions are given. Two new quantities vH and qHare introduced from which the resultants of the shear flow may be derived conveniently. Its applications in curved beams with commonly used sections, such as I-shape, channel section and H section without any symmetrical axis, are demonstrated and comparisons are made with previous theories.

Abstract:Large discrepancies exist among current classical theories for the in-plane buckling of arches that are subjected to a constant-directed radial load uniformly distributed around the arch axis. Discrepancies also exist between the classical solutions and nonlinear finite-element results. A new theory is developed in this paper for the nonlinear analysis of circular arches in which the nonlinear strain-displacement relationship is based on finite displacement theory. In the resulting variational equilibrium equation, the energy terms due to both nonlinear shear and transverse stresses are included. This paper also derives a set of linearized equations for the elastic in-plane buckling of arches, and presents a detailed analysis of the buckling of deep circular arches under constant-directed uniform radial loading including the effects of shear and transverse stresses, and of the prebuckling deformations. The solutions of the new theory agree very well with nonlinear finite-element results. Various assumptions often used by other researchers, in particular the assumption of inextensibility of the arch axis, are examined. The discrepancies among the current theories are clarified in the paper.

Abstract:Owing to the limitation of establishing finite element model of concrete-filled steel tubular(CFST) arch bridge,the more precision model has been put forward.Namely the outer steel tubes,the inner concrete and the reinforcing steel bars have their own elements.Using this method,a CFST arch bridge's deflection curve under different load is obtained considering the material and geometric nonlinearity.The computed results are in agreement with the test data.The result shows that the method used in this paper has better adaptability and definition.

Abstract:An analytical method and a semi-analytical method are proposed to analyze the dynamic thermo-elastic behavior of structures resting on a Pasternak foundation. The analytical method employs a finite Fourier integral transform and its inversion, as well as a Laplace transform and its numerical inversion. The semi-analytical method employs the state space method, the differential quadrature method (DQM), and the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform. To demonstrate the two methods, a simply supported Euler–Bernoulli beam of variable length is considered. The governing equations of the beam are derived using Hamilton's principle. A comparison between the results of analytical method and the results of semi-analytical method is carried out, and it is shown that the results of the two methods generally agree with each other, sometimes almost perfectly. A comparison of natural frequencies between the semi-analytical method and the experimental data from relevant literature shows good agreements between the two kinds of results, and the semi-analytical method is validated. Different numbers of sampling points along the axial direction are used to carry out convergence study. It is found that the semi-analytical method converges rapidly. The effects of different beam lengths and heights, thermal stress, and the spring and shear coefficients of the Pasternak medium are also investigated. The results obtained in this paper can serve as benchmark in further research.

Abstract:This paper made a revisit on the contact behavior and application of a beam (rail) on a half-plane/half-space. It is found that when the beam is subjected to a concentrated force, the shear deformation of the beam must always be considered, because the deformation only occurs within a limited length of the beam. The second finding of this paper is that the reactions and the surface settlements of the half-plane/half-space are significantly affected by the load position on the cross-section of the beam (on the top of rail in the concerned areas of application) and must be considered in practice. The Flamant/Boussinesq solutions are used to establish integral equations for the surface settlement of the half-plane/half-space below the beam. The Fourier Transform is applied to the first derivative of these integral equations and to the differential equations of the Timoshenko beam. Solving these two equations and employing the inverse Fourier Transform, the deflection and the reaction can be obtained in a compact format. After dispersing the wheel pressure on top of the rail to the centroid, the deflection and reaction are in agreement with the finite element analysis. Finally, simplified equations for equivalent bearing lengths are proposed. Nonuniform distribution of the reactions along the width of the beam is treated by using an equivalent uniform width. If the shear deformation is ignored, the problem becomes the classic one solved by Biot (J Appl Mech 4:A1–A7, 1937). Compared with Biot solution, the current way of solution is compact, their minor differences are the characteristic length. The current solution is a fourth root while the Biot solution is a cube root.

Shear-flexible geometrically exact beam element based on finite differences

Abstract:The proposed two-dimensional geometrically exact beam element extends our previous work by including the effects of shear distortion, and also of distributed forces and moments acting along the beam. The general flexibility-based formulation exploits the kinematic equations combined with the inverted sectional equations and the integrated form of equilibrium equations. The resulting set of three first-order differential equations is discretized by finite differences and the boundary value problem is converted into an initial value problem using the shooting method. Due to the special structure of the governing equations, the scheme remains explicit even though the first derivatives are approximated by central differences, leading to high accuracy. The main advantage of the adopted approach is that the error can be efficiently reduced by refining the computational grid used for finite differences at the element level while keeping the number of global degrees of freedom low. The efficiency is also increased by dealing directly with the global centerline coordinates and sectional inclination with respect to global axes as the primary unknowns at the element level, thereby avoiding transformations between local and global coordinates. Two formulations of the sectional equations, referred to as the Reissner and Ziegler models, are presented and compared. In particular, stability of an axially loaded beam/column is investigated and the connections to the Haringx and Engesser stability theories are discussed. Both approaches are tested in a series of numerical examples, which illustrate (i) high accuracy with quadratic convergence when the spatial discretization is refined, (ii) easy modeling of variable stiffness along the element (such as rigid joint offsets), (iii) efficient and accurate characterization of the buckling and post-buckling behavior.

Abstract:Presented herein is a spline finite member element method which adopts transformed B3 spline function to simulate the warping displacements and uses finite member elements for vibration analysis of the thin-walled curved beams. The general solution of displacements of static analysis is used in this method to replace the possible displacements in vibration, and the stiffness matrix is developed by using Hamiltonian variational principle, then the natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes are obtained. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this method, numerical solutions by this study are presented and compared with solutions by ANSYS. The presented method is simple in preprocess, convergent and sufficiently accurate.

Abstract:This article interprets the new implementation of an asymptotic homogenization method for effective bending stiffness of heterogeneous beam structures with periodic microstructure along its axial direction in an intuitionistic way. With this interpretation, the authors then develop a new method of evaluating effective shear stiffness for their Timoshenko beam model. This method can be easily implemented numerically in commercial software. Different kinds of elements and modeling techniques available in commercial software can be applied to model the unit cell. Several examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of this new method.

Abstract:In this note, Timoshenko beams with interior damping and boundary damping are studied from the viewpoints of control theory and numerical approximation . Especially, the uniform exponential stabilities of the beams are studied. The meaning of uniform exponential stability in this paper is two-fold: The first one is in the classical sense and also is concisely called exponential stability by many authors; The second one is that the semi-discretization systems, which are derived from an exponentially stable continuous beam by some semi-discretization schemes, are uniformly exponentially stable with respect to the discretized parameter. To investigate uniform exponential stability of continuous and discrete systems, five completely different methods, which are stability theory of port-Hamiltonian system, direct method of Lyapunov functional, perturbation theory of C0 -semigroup, spectral analysis of unbounded operator and frequency standard of exponential stability for contractive semigroup, are involved. Especially, a new method, which is based on the frequency domain characteristics of uniform exponential stability of C0 -semigroup of contractions, is established to verify the uniform exponential stability of semi-discretization systems derived from coupled system. The effectiveness of the numerical approximating algorithms is verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:An effective and precise physical model is generally required for the performance assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) components. In this study, a convergence‐enhanced Timoshenko beam element considering finite deformation is proposed for the stochastic nonlinear analysis of RC components. The unified framework of the rank 2 correction matrix is obtained by approximating the iterative matrix through the linearly independent basis vectors, and two types of Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS) operators are constructed. Then, a consistent solution scheme with superior numerical stability and efficiency is proposed based on the second kind of BFGS operator and improved quasi‐Newton method. Accurate discretization of the displacement fields and description of nonlinear sectional behavior are achieved by the high‐order Lagrangian interpolation functions, concrete damage‐plasticity model and J2 plasticity model. In an updated Lagrangian formulation, these shape functions and constitutive relationships are used to develop a complete secant stiffness with higher‐order terms in the strain tensor and residual force vector. To validate the proposed Timoshenko beam element, numerical applications involving material nonlinearity and geometrical nonlinearity are conducted. The numerical stability and efficiency of the solution scheme, the shear‐locking free technique, and the oscillation of axial force are thoroughly examined and discussed by solution of RC columns, cantilever beam and progressive collapse of planar RC frame. Finally, the parametric study considering the geometric and material randomness indicates that the RC column designed for flexural failure mode suffered considerable degradation of loading capacity and a larger scatter of residual load.

An accurate solution method for the vibration analysis of Timoshenko beams with general elastic supports

Abstract:In this investigation, an accurate solution method is presented for the free vibrations of Timoshenko beams with general elastic restraints at the end points, a class of problems which are rarely attempted in the literatures. Unlike in most existing studies where solutions are often developed for a particular type of boundary conditions, the current method can be generally applied to a wide range of boundary conditions with no need of modifying solution algorithms and procedures. Under the current framework, the displacement and rotation functions are generally sought, regardless of boundary conditions, as an improved trigonometric series in which several supplementary functions introduced to remove the potential discontinuities with the displacement components and its derivatives at the end points and accelerated the series expansion. Mathematically, the current Fourier series expansion is an exact solution for a class of problems with the Timoshenko beam such that both the governing equations and the boundary conditions simultaneously satisfy any specified degree of accuracy. The effectiveness and reliability of the presented solution are demonstrated by comparing the present results with those results published in literatures and finite element method data, and numerous new results for beams with elastic boundary restraints is presented, which may serve as benchmark solution for future researches.

Abstract:Structures with inhomogeneous materials, non-uniform cross-sections, non-uniform supports, and subject to non-uniform loads are increasingly common in aerospace applications. This paper presents a simple and unified numerical dynamics model for all beams with arbitrarily axially varying cross-sections, materials, foundations, loads, and general boundary conditions. These spatially varying properties are all approximated by high-order Chebyshev expansions, and discretized by Gauss–Lobatto sampling. The discrete governing equation of non-uniform axially functionally graded beams resting on variable Winkler–Pasternak foundations subjected to non-uniformly distributed loads is derived based on the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. A projection matrix method is employed to simultaneously assemble spectral elements and impose general boundary conditions. Numerical experiments are performed to validate the proposed method, considering different inhomogeneous materials, boundary conditions, foundations, cross-sections, and loads. The results are compared with those reported in the literature and obtained by the finite element method, and excellent agreement is observed. The convergence, accuracy, and efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated.
