Abstract:Based on frozen soil creep tests, yield stress limit is approximately determined by means of experimental tautochrone at first. Then several visco-elastic and visco-elasto-plastic Theological models are established. The model parameter are feed back by the non-linear least square method. A fuzzy optimization model is developed under the principle of simplicity and accuracy. As a result, the optimal model is Burgers model under the lower stress level or H-H/N/S model under the higher stress level.

Abstract:Failure behaviors of adhesive composite joints under strain rate loading depend on time. This paper extends the rate-independent bilinear cohesive model to the viscoelastic case, where the regular instantaneous bilinear cohesive traction-separation function is kept and the additional rate-dependent traction is superimposed that is represented by the convolution between the rate of relaxation modulus and the regular instantaneous cohesive traction. The relaxation modulus is further expanded by the Prony series which are determined inversely by combining numerical and experimental results for single-lap adhesive joints under low strain rate loads. Explicit finite element analysis (FEA) is used to solve the instantaneous cohesive traction and to predict the rate-dependent failure behaviors of adhesive joints. Effects of some important factors including the cohesive strength and the load rate on the load responses are studied. Robust and mesh-independent numerical results are obtained by the developed viscoelastic cohesive model.

Abstract:An approximate analytical method is presented for the dynamic response of a rigid cylindrical foundation embedded in a poroelastic soil layer under the excitation of a time-harmonic rocking moment. The soil underlying the foundation base is represented by a single-layered poroelastic soil based on rigid bedrock while the soil along the side of the foundation is modeled as an independent poroelastic stratum composed of a series of infinitesimally thin layers. The accuracy of the present solution is verified by comparisons with existing solutions obtained from other researchers. Numerical results for the rocking dynamic impedance and dynamic response factor are presented to demonstrate the influence of nondimensional frequency of excitation, poroelastic soil layer thickness, depth ratio of the foundation and internal friction of the poroelastic soil.

Abstract:Parameters of soil constitutive models are usually identified through laboratory tests. The spatial variability of these parameters is generally not considered due to the limitation of the test scale. This study proposes a data-driven approach to infer the spatially varying parameter of the modified Cam-clay model from limited field observations and subsequently improves soil settlement predictions. The observation data and numerical results of random finite element method are assimilated in an inverse modeling process based on the iterative Ensemble Kalman filtering (iEnKF). Different unknown variables and number of observations are used to study their effects on parameter estimations and settlement predictions. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated through a synthetic partial-loading test. The results show that the site-specific spatial variability can be estimated reasonably, and predictions of settlement can be improved by using the inferred parameter field. When the variables to be inferred change from all 60 variables to the selected 17 important variables, the average error of the estimated fields increases, but the variance decreases. A reduction in the observation spacing and an increase in the number of observations lead to a slightly smaller error of the mean and considerably reduced uncertainties of soil parameters. Although the inferred results of parameter field show different accuracies, the corresponding calculated settlements are generally similar and satisfactory.

Abstract:Biot’s theory has been widely employed to study responses of saturated soil under dynamic loads. To simplify the analysis, three simplified formulations based on Biot’s theory have been proposed, including the u–p formulation, fully undrained formulation and fully drained formulation. The u–p formulation is established by neglecting the relative pore fluid acceleration. The fully undrained formulation founds on the assumption of no relative pore fluid displacement. The fully drained formulation supposes an infinite soil permeability. Nevertheless, the successful applications of these simplified formulations are hindered because of their indefinite application scopes. To overcome this, this paper carries out a comparative study of the simplified formulations for modeling a saturated poroelastic half-space subjected to a moving harmonic point load. The three simplified formulations are investigated by comparing with Biot’s u–w formulation. A triple Fourier transform is first used to transform the four formulations into the frequency-wavenumber domain. Then an analytical inverse transform with respect to the frequency is performed to obtain the vertical soil displacement and pore pressure in the time-wavenumber domain. A parameter RΩ defined in the wavenumber domain, which integrates effects of the soil permeability, load oscillating frequency and moving load velocity, is proposed to determine the validity ranges of the three simplified formulations. Some critical values of RΩ are suggested and applied to a model in a previously published paper by Siddharthan et al.

Abstract:Laminated rocks, which are composed of two types of laminae (referred to as ‘strong lamina’ (SL) and ‘weak lamina’ (WL)), are prevalent in rock engineering construction. Determining their mechanical parameters is crucial, yet obtaining them separately through conventional physical experiments is challenging. While specialized techniques like Nano-indentation testing can be employed, they are often costly (Li et al., Mar Pet Geol 143:105740, 2022), and the relationship between these test results and macroscopic mechanical properties remains uncertain. In this study, a method for estimating the mechanical parameters of SL and WL based on uniaxial tests is proposed. The elastic moduli and Poisson ratios for both materials are derived first, followed by equations estimating their compression and tensile strengths. The internal friction angles and cohesive forces are obtained through correlations of rock mechanics parameters. Two numerical simulations were conducted and compared to physical tests, and the comparison results show that the proposed method is validated. A necessary evaluation method and suggestions for further parameter adjustments are provided. Overall, this method offers significant guidance for engineering projects involving laminated rocks and is worth popularizing.

Abstract:A simplified analytical method is presented for the vertical dynamic analysis of a rigid, massive, cylindrical foundation embedded in a poroelastic soil layer. The foundation is subjected to a time‐harmonic vertical loading and is perfectly bonded to the surrounding soil in the vertical direction. The soil underlying the foundation base is represented by a single‐layered poroelastic soil based on rigid bedrock while the soil at the side of the foundation is modeled as an independent poroelastic layer composed of a series of infinitesimally thin layers. The behavior of the soil is governed by Biot's poroelastodynamic theory and its governing equations are solved by the use of Hankel integral transform. The contact surface between the foundation base and the soil is smooth and fully permeable. The dynamic interaction problem is solved following standard numerical procedures. The accuracy of the present solution is verified by comparisons with the well‐known solutions obtained from other approaches for both the elastodynamic interaction problem and poroelastodynamic interaction problem. Numerical results for the vertical dynamic impedance and response factor of the foundation are presented to demonstrate the influence of nondimensional frequency of excitation, soil layer thickness, poroelastic material parameters, depth ratio and mass ratio on the dynamic response of a rigid foundation embedded in a poroelastic soil layer. Abstract:The prediction of soil sinkage under wheels and tracks is of significant importance for determining the off-road vehicle performance and level of compaction of agricultural soils. Bekker's theory for pressure and sinkage relationship has been widely applied to estimate the vehicle mobility performance for designing off-road vehicles for deformable terrains. However, the Bekker's constants, which reflect the soil sinkage and behaviour of soil under load, vary significantly among soils. There is a paucity of studies on paddy soils in the plastic state. Furthermore, the determination of soil stiffness constants via pressure-sinkage tests is usually time-consuming. In this study, the impact of three soil physical properties, including soil water content, clay content, and density, on the soil stiffness constants for sinkage behaviour in paddy soils was assessed based on experimental results. Subsequently, numerical models were established to quantify the Bekker's stiffness constants measured from soil bin tests using soil physical properties. Three quadratic polynomial regression models were established and evaluated to quantify the three constants using soil water content, clay content, and density. The P values from goodness of fit tests suggested significant fit (p < 0.01) and insignificant unfit (p > 0.05) between the simulated and experimental results. The established models were further validated using the soil samples with different physical properties. The comparisons between soil stiffness constants predicted using the model with laboratory-measured values indicated satisfactory model performances (R-2 > 0.9). In this study, a simple and promising method was established to estimate soil stiffness constants using easy-to-measure soil physical properties. Abstract:The determination of parameters in viscoelastic constitutive equations of soft rocks is very important to analyze the time-dependent behaviors of embankments,foundations and mines in soft rocks.The complex viscoelastic model equations can be transformed into unified linear equations,and the parameters of the model can be got by back analysis method.But the general back analysis method doesn't take the randomicity and fuzziness of the parameters into account,therefore,it does not be in accordance with the fact.In the general back analysis method,the membership function is introduced.The methods of fuzzy back analysis and viscoelastic model identification with fuzzy correlation degree are proposed.The method can identify the models such as Kelvin model,H/M model,H-K model,M-K model and Mechant model,and can also get their parameters.On the basis of the creep experiments of two groups of salt rock from a mine factory,the method is used.The results show that the samples of groupⅠare Mechant bodies and the samples of groupⅡare H-K bodies.The parameters of the two models got by back analysis method coincide with the test results very well.

Abstract:The Bammann-Chiesa-Johnson (BCJ)viscoplasticity constitutive model is advanced to predict mechanical behavior of metals.And the capability of prediction relies on the determination of the model parameters.Normally,the parameters would be identified by using the back-analysis method.However,the method is very complicated because there are quite a number of parame-ters in the BCJ model and it is not easy to obtain the optimal values.These parameters are involved to describe the coupling effects of strain,strain rate,temperature,as well as the load path and temperature history.This paper proposed a method to identify the 1 8 papameters,in which comprehensive experiments,based on the physics of the parameters,had been conducted,including quasi-static tests,creep tests and the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB)tests,furthermore parameters decoupling and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)algorithm had been applied.The dynamic mechanical response of Al 1060 was taken to validate the method and the prediction on flow stressesis in good agreement with the test data.The quantitative error analysis showed that the method was ef-fective for a large range of strain rate and temperature variation with high accuracy.

Abstract:A two-parameter model is proposed to identify the viscosity coefficients of composites consisting of carbon fiber and resin. These two parameters are the viscosity coefficient of resin and the viscosity coefficient of carbon fiber in the woof direction respectively. The parameters can be identified by using the field measured damping ratio of a cantilever gird, and tested by using the field measured results of other girds. In identifying, the influence of air resistance is taken into account. The analysis results show that this method is effective, and its error is acceptable.
Parameter identification in elasto-plasticity: distance between parameters and impact of measurement errors

Abstract:A special aspect of parameter identification in finite-strain elasto-plasticity is considered. Namely, we analyze the impact of the measurement errors on the resulting set of material parameters. In order to define the sensitivity of parameters with respect to the measurement errors, a mechanics-based distance between two sets of parameters is introduced. Using this distance function, we assess the reliability of certain parameter identification procedures. The assessment involves introduction of artificial noise to the experimental data; the noise can be both correlated and uncorrelated. An analytical procedure to speed up Monte Carlo simulations is presented. As a result, a simple tool for estimating the robustness of parameter identification is obtained. The efficiency of the approach is illustrated using a model of finite-strain elasto-plasticity, which accounts for combined isotropic and kinematic hardening. It is shown that dealing with correlated measurement errors, most stable identification results are obtained for non-diagonal weighting matrix. At the same time, there is a conflict between the stability and accuracy.

Abstract:A study is carefully conducted for the rocking response of a rigid circular foundation resting on a poroelastic half-space when subjected to seismic waves under the framework of Biot’s theory. The free-field waves, rigid-body scattering field waves and radiation scattering field waves are introduced to consider the complex behavior of the soil owing to the scattering phenomena caused by the existence of the foundation. The contact surface between the soil and the foundation is supposed to be perfectly bonded and fully permeable. Combining with the divided wave fields, two sets of dual integral equations elaborating the mixed boundary-value conditions are established, and then reduced to Fredholm integral equations. Therefore, with a semi-analytical method, the expressions of the rocking displacements are obtained. The numerical results of the rocking vibration of the foundation for incident P, SV and Rayleigh waves are presented. The influences of certain parameters, such as the permeability of the soil, the incident angle, Poisson’s ratio and the mass of the foundation, on the rocking vibration of the foundation are explored and studied. Different reactions are found when the foundation is excited by different waves.

Abstract:A comprehensive analytical solution is developed in this paper to investigate the torsional vibration of an end bearing pile embedded in a homogeneous poroelastic medium and subjected to a time-harmonic torsional loading. The poroelastic medium is modeled using Biot’s two-phased linear theory and the pile using one-dimensional elastic theory. By using the separation of variables technique, the torsional response of the soil layer is solved first. Then based on perfect contact between the pile and soil, the dynamic response of the pile is obtained in a closed form. Numerical results for torsional impedance of the soil layer are presented first to portray the influence of wave modes, slenderness ratio, pile–soil modulus ratio and poroelastic properties. A comparison with the plane strain theory is performed. The selected numerical results are obtained to analyze the influence of the major parameters on the torsional impedance at the level of the pile head. Finally, the dynamic torsional impedance of this study is compared with that for floating pile in elastic soil.

Abstract:The present paper is aimed at studying the effects of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical dynamics on an isotropic, uniform, fully saturated, and poroviscoelastic soil whose surface is subjected to either a mechanical force or a thermal load. A formulation is first deduced in the context of the Lord-Shulman theory. The general relationships among the non-dimensional vertical displacement, excess pore water pressure, vertical stress, and temperature distribution are then deduced via normal mode analysis and depicted graphically. This study continues the authors' work of applying normal mode analysis to the derivation of theoretical results in the multi-field coupling of viscoelastic soil. Via this method, the equation can be divided into two parts without integral transformation and inverse transformation, thereby increasing the speed of decoupling and eliminating the limitation of numerical inverse transformation. Furthermore, the differences between the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical dynamic (THMD) model and the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical viscoelastic dynamic (THMVD) model are presented. Comparisons are made within the theory in both the presence and absence of the viscoelastic relaxation time, and the influence of the viscoelastic relaxation time on each physical variable is also discussed. This proposed derivation method can be widely applied in the geotechnical engineering field.

Abstract:<p>The characterization of material anisotropic properties at high strain rates remains a challenging work due to the limitations of the conventional dynamic testing methods. In this study, a novel inverse identification strategy is proposed based on the dynamic virtual fields method (VFM) to enable a simultaneous identification of the anisotropic constitutive parameters from a single high speed impact test of a non-uniform specimen. This is implemented by taking advantage of the heterogeneous full-field strain and inertial acceleration data, in which the restrictions of one-dimensional stress wave propagation and homogeneous deformation states for the conventional methods are released. Specifically, the dynamic VFM-based identification algorithm is developed first. Then, several virtual impact tests with different specimen configurations are designed to provide distinct stress/strain distributions. Next, the simulated full-field strain and acceleration data are utilized to extract the input target orthotropic stiffness components. The results show that the identification accuracy of the anisotropic parameters is highly dependent on the heterogeneity of the stress/strain distributions. Also, the identification results are unstable for different time steps but can be significantly improved using a minimization algorithm on multiple time steps. Finally, the influences of noise, impact speed and loading mode are analyzed in the sensitivity study.</p>

Abstract:This article demonstrates how system identification techniques can be successfully applied to a soil-structure interaction system in conjunction with the results of the forced vibration tests on the Hualien large-scale seismic test structure which was recently built in Taiwan for an international joint research. The parameters identified are the shear moduli of several near-field soil regions as well as Young's moduli of the shell sections of the structure. The soil-structure interaction system is represented by the finite element method combined with infinite element formulation for the unbounded layered soil medium. Preliminary investigations are carried out on the results of the static stress analysis for the soil medium and the results of the in-situ tests to divide the soil-structure system into several regions with homogeneous properties and to determine the lower and upper bounds of the parameters for the purpose of identification. Then two sets of parameters are identified for two principal directions based on the forced vibration test data by minimizing the estimation error using the constrained steepest descent method. The simulated responses for the forced vibration tests using the identified parameters show excellent agreement with the test data. The present estimated parameters are also found to be well compared with the average value of those by other researchers in the joint project. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Research the airport rigid pavement finite size rectangular plate system under dynamic loading.In the light of the insufficient identification precision of the traditional elastic,viscoelastic analytical method,the paper established a pavement motion equation of elastic support boundary,elastic fixed boundary and the actual boundary conditions under the dynamic loading action,and proposed a Kelvin viscoelastic foundation pavement system identification method based on the variational method and the Betti's reciprocal theorem.According to the least squares criterion for inversion at the same time,it fitted the measured dynamic deflection and the theoretical dynamic deflection,and consequently identify the foundation reaction modulus K.The simulation and actual measurement results show that the methods can significantly improve the identification accuracy in the premise of ensuring the recognition rate,and it has the good application value to provide theoretical basis for the airport rigid pavement design,parameter identification and evaluation of quality.

Abstract:A mathematical model for poro-visco-plastic compaction and pressure solution in porous sediments has been formulated using the Voigt-type rheological constitutive relation as derived from experimental data. The governing equations reduce to a nonlinear hyperbolic heat conduction equation in the case of slow deformation where permeability is relatively high and the pore fluid pressure is nearly hydrostatic, while travelling wave exists in the opposite limit where over-pressuring occurs and the pore fluid pressure is almost quasi-lithostatic. Full numerical simulation using a finite element method agree well with the approximate analytical solutions.
