Abstract:Superfine Mo/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared for partial oxidation of CH4 to HCHO and characterized by BET, XRD, LRS, H2-TPR, and XPS. Mo/ZrO2 catalysts displayed good catalytic performance in the partial oxidation of methane to HCHO. The catalytic performance and physicochemical characteristics of the Mo/ZrO2 catalysts might be related to the Zr(MoO4)2. With increasing Mo content, the amount and the crystal size of Zr(MoO4)2 increased, resulting in a decrease in the BET surface area. The bigger the crystal size of Zr(MoO4)2, the fewer the deficient sites in the Zr(MoO4)2 lattice. Thus, Zr(MoO4)2 with a big crystal size had low ability to activate and transform the oxygen species. The Mo species, particularly the Mo=O species for the partial oxidation of CH4 to HCHO, increased with the Zr(MoO4)2 content. The Mo=O species were in favor of the partial oxidation of CH4 to HCHO, and the weak reducibility of the catalyst could prevent the deep oxidation of HCHO. Thus, in the partial oxidation of CH4, high HCHO selectivity and high HCHO specific activity were obtained on Mo/ZrO2 catalysts with high Mo contents. However, too much Mo=O with Mo-O-Mo species could lead to deep oxidation of CH4 and HCHO, resulting in increased COx specific activity.
