Abstract:Blood flow velocity profiles are very useful in the research of vessel properties, and multi-channel pulsed Doppler system is often needed to detect the blood flow velocity profile. This system is not always feasible because of restriction between velocity and depth measurement and complicatedness of the system. In this paper, we propose a method to obtain the blood flow velocity profile from the relationship among the maximum and mean frequency estimated from Doppler shift signals. Abstract:The rapid development of ultrafast ultrasound imaging based on the unfocused transmission of plane-wave has led to the widespread attention of clutter filtering technology, since the discrimination between tissue and blood motion is critical for non-contrast ultrafast Doppler imaging of blood flow. The increasingly used clutter filtering method, i.e., the singular value decomposition (SVD) is essentially a black-box technique, and the direct rejection of any singular vector corresponding to the first singular values will result in the potential loss of blood flow or residue of tissue activities. To cater for a better filtering performance, an adaptive clutter rejection method based on the fast multivariate empirical mode decomposition (FMEMD) is proposed, and compared to the high-pass filter (HPF) and SVD in the task of performing blood flow imaging and velocity profile estimation on signals collected from carotid arteries of 10 healthy human subjects. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art techniques, especially for discriminating between blood flow and tissue signals near the vessel walls.

Abstract:Blood flow measurement provide necessary information for the diagnosis of diseases causing blood flow disorders. Ultrasound scatter de-correlation technology is a promising technique for the velocity measurement of blood flow. To achieve more accurate blood flow velocity measurement with scatter de-correlation, a new signal processing method is proposed. The proposed method is based on dynamic time warping of two consecutive radio frequency signals, and tested on an experimental platform based on high-frequency intravascular ultrasound data acquisition system (50 MHz). Experimental results show that, compared with the traditional windowed cross-correlation method, the proposed method can significantly improve the accuracy of the time shift calculation, leading to more accurate blood flow velocity measurement. The maximum error of the proposed method is less than 5% at 10 speeds in the range of 4.72 to 25.95 cm/s. With the usage of the proposed method, the average error and covariance are reduced by 68% and 57%, respectively, compared with windowed cross-correlation.

The principle of the precise velocity measurement at any angle and the method of calculation of the angle are described. The re-correction based on the practice is applied to improve the precision of the velocity measurement. Experimental results and comparisons of the method with the quasi-compensation are also given too.

Abstract:A novel approach based on radio frequency signal deconvolution is developed to estimating the velocities of blood flow and tissue motion without MTI filtering.In this method,the sampled sequences of the radio frequency echoes are transformed to the frequency domain by FFT algorithm firstly.Then these transformed sequences are deconvolved.Finally the velocities of the blood flow and the tissue motion can be obtained by a spectrum analysis of these deconvolved sequences.This approach has been applied to the simulated ultrasound echoes with two typical time-delay parameter sets.The validity of this method is examined by the comparison between the estimated velocities of blood and tissue motion and the given values.This approach is helpful to the measurement of the low-velocity blood flows.

Abstract:Blood flow velocity estimation is a critical technique in ultrasound color flow imaging. Existent flow velocity estimation methods include autocorrelation, cross-correlation and butterfly search technique. Among these estimators, autocorrelation estimator is the most commonly used technique in current medical ultrasound systems, due to its low computational complexity. But it's intrinsically a frequency domain estimator, and is limited by the sample theorem. While measuring high speed blood flow, frequency aliasing occurs, because the Doppler frequency shift exceeds the Nyquist limit. To solve this aliasing problem, a new blood velocity estimator is proposed, which incorporates the autocorrelation technique with the butterfly search method. Simulation results show that the frequency aliasing artifact can be eliminated without adding too much computational complexity

Abstract:To design and implement a simulated blood flow velocity measurement system via very-high-frequency (VHF)ultrasound, which can be used to complete an experimental study that simulates the real-time detection of blood flow information from human superficial organs. We prepared a blood phantom that was composed of nylon particles, pure water, glycerol, dextran and non-ionic surfactant. The experimental platform of this system included a simulated blood circulation system consisting of a medical injection pump for controlling the flow velocity, a medical silicone tube, and a simulated blood phantom; a single pulse, mechanical, linear scanning probe with an operation frequency of 50 MHz; the ultrasound echo signal acquisition circuit of the slave computer; and the VHF ultrasound blood flow imaging system composed of the host computer modules. The transducer was placed approximately 9 mm above the simulated blood vessel, and the direction of blood flow was same to the scanning direction of the probe. The pushing speed of the injection pump was adjusted to obtain the simulated blood imaging near the focal area. The acoustic characteristics of the homemade blood phantom were nearly unchanged for 150 days, which met the requirements of experimental research. According to the imaging results of the simulated blood flow at various flow velocities, the red blood cell imaging particles are large and the number is small when the flow velocity is low, and the red blood cell imaging particles are small and the number is large when the flow velocity is high. The directly proportional relationship between the number of red blood cell imaging particles of the simulated blood and the blood flow velocity can preliminarily be obtained by the designed blood flow velocity measurement system via VHF ultrasound, and the blood flow velocity can be determined accordingly.

Abstract:A 3D vector field flow topology extraction algorithm based on critical point analysis is presented for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) data sets. It operates on curvilinear, structured grids, including large multi-zone grids. In many CFD computations, no-slip boundary conditions are imposed on the velocity field. On these boundaries, the fluid velocity vector is zero. The algorithm analyzes this special case by examining the skin friction field. Using glyphs to locate critical points, we can interactively mark vortex cores. This is drawn by selecting glyphs that indicate spiraling flow and integrating a streamline in the direction of the eigenvector associated with the real eigenvalue. The test results show clearly the fluid flow critical features.

Abstract:The existing methods for ultrasonic blood flow measurement were studied. The pulsed Doppler system and the autocorrelation method are essentially the same narrowband estimation methods with low velocity resolution and probably the aliased spectrum. Three wideband techniques are the time domain crosscorrelation technique, the wideband maximum likelihood estimation method and two-dimensional Fourier transform method, and these techniques can achieve high velocity resolution and low probability of aliasing.

Abstract:Optical micro-angiography (OMAG) is widely used in vivo imaging due to its non-invasive and highly sensitive measurements. It can effectively distinguish flowing and stationary particles for applications such as micro-size blood vessel. However, the detectable flow velocity of OMAG is restricted by the system parameters. Their relationship is usually unknown and thus increase the difficulty of OMAG application on liquid flow measurements. This study for the first time proposes a velocity range estimation formula to quantify the measurable velocity range of liquid flow for the OMAG and the ultrahigh-sensitivity OMAG (UHS-OMAG) methods. The velocity range not only provides rough velocity information of the measure liquid flow that is not available in original OMAG system, but also can be used as a reference for accurate velocity determination in future research. The lower limit of the proposed flow velocity range is determined through the carrier frequency of the system while the upper limit is determined by the sampling frequency based on the sampling theorem. Experiments were conducted to verify the proposed velocity range formula and liquid flows with preset velocities are measured using OMAG and UHS-OMAG system. Experimental results are in good agreement with the proposed formula.

Abstract:In this study, the blood flow was investigated involving nanoparticles through porous blood vessels in the presence of magnetic field by means of collocation and least squares techniques. Blood was assumed to be non-Newtonian fluid having nanoparticles in which different models were used to determine the viscosity of the nanofluids. Vogel’s, Reynolds, variable, and constant viscosity models were discussed by using the two aforementioned techniques. Hence, we compared our results with a numerical technique RK-4 and already existing results to show the credibility of our solutions. Further, some physical parameters and their effects are also stated in this research. Increase in the thermophoresis parameter and pressure gradient along with the decrease in the Brownian motion parameter provide a rapid change in the velocity profile, which has been disclosed by results. Additionally, a dramatic change in the velocity has been realized by using Vogel’s model.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method was studied to diagnose the vessel disease using the feature of the maximum frequency waveform from the blood flow ultrasound Doppler signals. The sampled audio Doppler flow signals were analyzed using the short time Fourier transform. Then the percentile method was used to obtain the maximum frequency waveform from whose spectrum feature values were extracted to diagnose the vessel disease. From the clinical analysis of Doppler flow signals from the common carotid arteries, it was shown that the method described here gave a higher diagnosis accuracy than the conventional method, the sonogram parameter method.

Abstract:A dynamic programming algorithm based on the global optimization is presented to extract the maximum frequency waveform of the Doppler ultrasonic blood flow signal. This approach was tested using artifact and clinical Doppler ultrasonic signals together with other three methods. The relative error of maximum frequency waveform estimation under this method is no more than 20 times smaller than that using the traditional methods. The fact that it gets better estimation precision under the strong noise shows that the dynamic programming extraction method has better denoising performance. This proposed method can be used to extract the maximum frequency waveform precisely from the strong background noise corrupted signals and can be applied further to clinical vascular diseases diagnosis.

Abstract:Based on the diameter and position information of small vessels obtained by transcranial super-resolution imaging using 3 MHz low-frequency chirp plane waves, a Gaussian-like non-linear compression was adopted to compress the blood flow signals in spatiotemporal filtering (STF) data to a precise region, and then estimate the blood flow velocity field inside the region over the adjacent time intervals using ultrasound imaging velocimetry (UIV). Imaging parameters, such as the mechanical index (MI), frame rate, and microbubble (MB) concentration, are critical during the estimation of velocity fields over a short time at high MB contrast agent concentrations. These were optimized through experiments and algorithms, in which dividing the connected domain was proposed to calculate MB cluster spot centroid spacing (SCS) and the spot-to-flow area ratio (SFAR) to determine the suitable MB concentration. The results of the in vitro experiments showed that the estimation of the small vessel flow velocity field was consistent with the theoretical results; the velocity field resolution for vessels with diameters of 0.5 mm and 0.3 mm was 36 mu m and 21 mu m, and the error between the mean velocity and the theoretical value was 0.7 % and 0.67 %, respectively.

Abstract:Noninvasive visualization of blood flow with high frequency Doppler ultrasound has been extensively used to assess the morphology and hemodynamics of the microcirculation. A completely digital implementation of multigate pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler method was proposed in this paper for high frequency ultrasound applications. Analog mixer was eliminated by a digital demodulator and the same data acquisition path was shared with traditional B-mode imaging which made the design compact and flexible. Hilbert transform based quadrature demodulation scheme was employed to achieve the multigate Doppler acquisition. A programmable high frequency ultrasound platform was also proposed to facilitate the multigate flow visualization. Experimental results showed good performance of the proposed method. Parabolic velocity gradient inside the vessel and velocity profile with different time slots were acquired to demonstrate the functionality of the multigate Doppler. Slow wall motion was also recorded by the proposed method.

Abstract:With the more and more clinical use of Doppler ultrasound technique, some sonogram parameters have been found to be related to blood flow situations. In order to extract sonogram parameters automatically, a multiscale analysis method based on Mallat algorithm was proposed. The recognition of characteristic points of a sonogram from its maximum-frequency curve under different scales of the signal after the wavelet transform was described. The results of simulation and clinical use were both showed.

Abstract:Nonlinear photoacoustic-based methods for measuring high-speed blood flow velocity typically use a single-pulse laser or a dual-pulse laser system with high repetition rate to achieve thermal tagging and acoustic excitation at the same time. However, the peak power of the pulsed laser is too high and can easily exceed the damage threshold, causing the blood to be overheated, which limits the application of this method in living tissue. In this paper, we propose and confirm a method of detecting high-speed blood flow with a low-power continuous laser-assisted nonlinear photoacoustic. We first establish a model of the relationship between the attenuation of Gruneisen parameters and velocity. Based on this, we further develop a theoretical relationship between the change of photoacoustic signal and the blood velocity. Then we used a low-power continuous laser for thermal tagging and a low repetition rate of pulsed laser to excite photoacoustic signals in the experiment. After calibration, the results show that the velocity measured by this method is in good agreement with the actual velocity and the highest flow velocity can be measured was 100 mm/s under our experimental conditions.
