Abstract:The rotational band structures associated with the intrinsic non-axial octupole deformed states, especially for the intrinsic ground state of the even-even nuclei, are analysed by using the reflection asymmetric shell model. These band structures are expected to be useful in identifying such exotic shapes from experiment. As an example, a possible triangular shape Of Sm-148 is suggested.

Abstract:The reflection asymmetric shell model has been applied to describe the octupole deformed bands in neutron-rich even-even Ba-142 and odd-N Ba-145 nuclei. The alternating parity bands of Ba-142 and the simplex s = -i bands of Ba-145 are calculated and compared with the available experimental data. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The spin and parity assignments of ground-state of Ba-145 are discussed. The results show that the present work is a useful attempt to further explore the nuclear reflection asymmetry in neutron rich region.
Superdeformed Band in the N = Z + 4 Nucleus 40ar : A Projected Shell Model Analysis

Abstract:. 40 Ar is among the few sd -shell nuclei known to exhibit superdeformation. An interesting question is whether the experimentally identified superdeformed rotational band in 40 Ar has an axially or triaxially deformed shape. Projected shell model calculations assuming an axially deformed basis are performed up to high spins for this nucleus. Our detailed analysis of the wave functions reveals that the high-spin states are dominated by mixed 0-, 2-, and 4-quasiparticle configurations with different K -components. The calculated electric quadrupole transition probabilities reproduce well the known experimental data and suggest a reduced but still significant collectivity in the high spin region. Due to the mixing of various multi-quasiparticle K -configurations, axial asymmetry emerges in the calculation. Throughout the entire rotational band, the extracted triaxial deformation parameters are small but non-zero. Relations of triaxiality and unnatural spin-parity states of the superdeformed side-band are discussed.

Abstract:It has been debated whether the experimentally-identified superdeformed rotational band in $^{40}$Ar [E. Ideguchi, et al., Phys. Lett. B 686 (2010) 18] has an axially or triaxially deformed shape. Projected shell model calculations with angular-momentum-projection using an axially-deformed basis are performed up to high spins. Our calculated energy levels indicate a perfect collective-rotor behavior for the superdeformed yrast band. However, detailed analysis of the wave functions reveals that the high-spin structure is dominated by mixed 0-, 2-, and 4-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated electric quadrupole transition probabilities reproduce well the known experimental data and suggest a reduced, but still significant, collectivity in the high spin region. The deduced triaxial deformation parameters are small throughout the entire band, suggesting that triaxiality is not very important for this superdeformed band.

Abstract:Reflection asymmetric shell model is applied for the description of the low-energy level spectrum in odd-A 221, 223Ra nuclei. The ground-state spin parity and the ground-state parity doublet bands are well reproduced by the present model. The presence of parity doublets suggests reflection-asymmetric (octupole deformed) shapes for nuclei 221Ra and 223Ra.

Abstract:The heavy shell model (HSM) [Y. Sun and C.-L. Wu, Phys. Rev. C 68, 024315 (2003)] was proposed to take the advantages of two existing models, the projected shell model (PSM) and the fermion dynamical symmetry model (FDSM). To construct the HSM, one extends the PSM by adding collective D pairs into the intrinsic basis. The HSM is expected to describe simultaneously low-lying collective and quasiparticle excitations in deformed nuclei, and still keeps the model space tractable even for the heaviest systems. As the first numerical realization of the HSM, we study systematically the band structures for some deformed actinide nuclei, with a model space including up to 4-quasiparticle and 1-D-pair configurations. The calculated energy levels for the ground-state bands, the collective bands such as beta and gamma bands, and some quasiparticle bands agree well with known experimental data. Some low-lying quasiparticle bands are predicted, awaiting experimental confirmation.

Abstract:The rotational bands in nuclei with Z approximate to 100 are investigated systematically by using a cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method, in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. By fitting the experimental single-particle spectra in these nuclei, a new set of Nilsson parameters (kappa and mu) and deformation parameters (epsilon(2) and epsilon(4)) are proposed. The experimental kinematic moments of inertia for the rotational bands in even-even, odd-A, and odd-odd nuclei, and the band-head energies of the one-quasiparticle bands in odd-A nuclei, are reproduced quite well by the PNC-CSM calculations. By analyzing the omega dependence of the occupation probability of each cranked Nilsson orbital near the Fermi surface and the contributions of valence orbitals in each major shell to the angular momentum alignment, the upbending mechanism in this region is understood clearly.

Abstract:The underlying structure of low-lying collective bands of atomic nuclei is discussed from a novel perspective on the interplay between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, by utilizing state-of-the-art configuration interaction calculations on heavy nuclei. Besides the multipole components of the nucleon-nucleon interaction that drive collective modes forming those bands, the monopole component is shown to control the resistance against such modes. The calculated structure of 154Sm corresponds to coexistence between prolate and triaxial shapes, while that of 166Er exhibits a deformed shape with a strong triaxial instability. Both findings differ from traditional views based on beta/gamma vibrations. The formation of collective bands is shown to be facilitated from a self-organization mechanism.

Abstract:Nuclear magnetic dipole properties of ground bands and γ-vibrational bands are studied for the first time using the triaxial projected shell model approach. The study is carried out for the Dy and Er isotopic chains, ranging from transitional to well-deformed region. It is found that the g-factor ratio of the 2+ state in ground bands to that of γ-bands, r=g(2+,γ-vib)/g(2+,ground), varies along an isotopic chain. With the γ-deformations, which best reproduce the energy levels for both bands, we obtain a qualitative agreement with the experimental data. This result thus suggests that study of the ratio may provide an important information on the triaxial deformation of a nuclear system. The angular-momentum dependence of the ground band g-factor on the triaxial deformation is also investigated.

Abstract:We perform a series of theoretical calculations and investigation for nuclei 179,181,183Au in the particle–triaxial-rotor model with variable moment of inertia. The calculated energy spectra in 179,181,183Au agree well with the experimental data globally. The obtained results indicate that the nuclei 179,181,183Au have prolate deformation and involve shape coexistence with different deformation parameters in different bands. The main configuration of bands 1, 2, 3 and 5 in these nuclei are identified as [541]1/2− (πh9/2, α = 1/2), [541]1/2− (πh9/2, α = −1/2), [530]1/2− (πf7/2) and [660]1/2+ (πi13/2), respectively.

Abstract:The triaxial deformations of candidate nuclei of the chiral doublets bands in A - 100 mass region are investigated in a microscopic and self-consistent triaxial relativistic mean field (RMF) approach. The convergence of results is examined. Based on the constraint RMF calculation with effective interaction PK1, the deformations of ground state in Rh, Ag and In isotopes have been obtained. Large triaxial deformation necessary for chiral doublets band is predicted in several nuclei.

Abstract:A possible scheme of realizing shell model calculations for heavy nuclei is based on a deformed basis and the projection technique. Here we present a new development for odd–odd nuclei, in which one starts with triaxially-deformed multi-quasi-particle configurations, builds the shell-model space through exact three-dimensional angular-momentum-projection, and diagonalizes a two-body Hamiltonian in this space. The model enables us to study the old problem of signature inversion from a different view. With an excellent reproduction of the experimental data in the mass-130 region, the results tend to interpret the phenomenon as a manifestation of dynamical drift of the rotational axis with presence of axial asymmetry in these nuclei.
Prevailing Triaxial Shapes in Atomic Nuclei and a Quantum Theory of Rotation of Composite Objects

Abstract:In the traditional view, heavy deformed nuclei are like axially-symmetric prolate ellipsoids, rotating about one of the short axes. In the present picture, their shapes may be triaxial. The triaxial shape yields complex rotations, which actually well reproduce experimental data, as confirmed by state-of-the-art Configuration Interaction calculations. Two origins are suggested for the triaxiality: (i) binding-energy gain by the symmetry restoration for triaxial shapes, and (ii) another gain by specific components of the nuclear force, like tensor force and high-multipole (e.g. hexadecupole) central force. While the origin (i) produces basic modest triaxiality for virtually all deformed nuclei, the origin (ii) produces more prominent triaxiality for a certain class of nuclei. An example of the former is 154Sm, a typical showcase of axial symmetry but is now suggested to depict a modest yet finite triaxiality. The latter, prominent triaxiality, is discussed from various viewpoints for some exemplified nuclei including 166Er, and experimental findings. Many-body structures of the gamma band and the double-gamma band are clarified. Regarding the general features of rotational states of deformed many-body systems including triaxial ones, the well-known J(J+1) rule of rotational excitation energies is derived, within the quantum mechanical many-body theory, without resorting to the quantization of a rotating classical rigid body. This derivation is extended to finite K. The present picture of the rotation is robust and can be applied to various shapes or configurations, including clusters and molecules. Thus, two long-standing open problems, (i) occurrence and origins of triaxiality and (ii) quantum many-body derivation of rotational energy, are resolved. Their possible relations to Davydov's rigid-triaxial-rotor model are mentioned.

Abstract:The rotation band is an important issue in the studies of nuclear structures, which offers a good laboratory for understanding of nuclear deformation, shell evolution, and other properties. Studies of nuclear collective rotations have mainly focused on open-shell nuclei in heavy-mass regions. Traditional collective models, such as the total Routhian surface and particle-rotor models, have been widely used. In principle, the phenomenological collective models are not suitable for the descriptions of rotations of light nuclei. The shell model with configuration interactions can describe any mass-region nuclei, as long as one chooses an appropriate model space. There have been recent studies of rotational bands of light nuclei within the shell model framework. The shell model calculation has shown a powerful model for the descriptions of low-lying states and shell evolutions. On the other hand. the shell model is a useful and popular method to analyze configurations of states. Recently, the L-S decomposition has been suggested for analyzing the collective properties of nuclei with shell-model calculation. In these light nuclei around the dripline. the intruded higher single-particle orbitals often occur in the ground states and mix with the normal single-particle orbitals. And a lot of work has been done to learn the exotic properties of the neutron-rich nuclei near Be-12. In the case of Be-12 and its neighboring nuclei, it is believed that the strong configuration mixing of the intruder states and normal states leads to large deformations. And the rotational bands can build on the band-head states with large deformations. Therefore, an interesting question is whether rotational bands can exist in such light systems, and what the corresponding configurations are in the shell-model framework. In the present paper, using the WBP and YSOX interactions. we perform shell model calculations for the low-lying states of Be-12 and Be-12, focusing on their excitation spectra. The rotational bands are constructed using the calculated B(E2) values and excitation energies. We give the rotational energy constants of these rotational bands. To further learn the properties of the states within the rotational band, we perform the L-S decomposition. The results show that the L-S decomposition can well describe the collective properties of the rotational band in Be-10 and Be-12. In the calculations for Be-10, the WBP and YSOX interactions give similar results for L decomposition in J(pi)=0(2)(+) rotational band. But for Be-12, the WBP and YSOX interactions give different rotational intrinsic states, which show J(pi)=0(2)(+) for WBP and J(pi)=0(1)(+) for YSOX. Further discussions on shell model configurations for rotational bands are made as well. The results show that the above two rotational bands have strong intruders from the upper sd shell orbitals in the rotational states. For the ground state of Be-12, the WBP and YSOX interactions give different dominant configurations. which indicate that the intruder configuration from the sd shell in YSOX calculations is stronger. We discuss the possible origins of the difference, and future experimental studies for the rotational structure in Be-12 should be expected.

Abstract:A collective model Hamiltonian incorporating a β−soft potential is proposed to elucidate phenomena related to triaxiality in transitional systems. The solutions derived from the model built within the core-particle scheme can be approximated using Bessel functions and subsequently applied to describe the exotic high-spin phenomena observed in the A≈130 mass region. The results indicate that chiral and wobbling rotations in a β−soft system may exhibit robustness against β vibrations, suggesting a collective vibration mechanism for multiple chiral doublet bands and multiple rotation-wobbling bands in triaxial nuclei. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.110.034301 ©2024 American Physical Society
