Abstract:Low-cost tunable lasers are key enablers for next-generation dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) based access and metro networks. At present, tunable lasers are mostly deployed in long-haul optical transmission systems due to their high cost resulting from fabrication and operation complexity for structures such as sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector (SGDBR) [1,2]. For wide deployment of the WDM technology in metro, access, and data center networks, the cost reduction of tunable lasers has become a key issue. Recently, a simple and compact tunable V-cavity laser (VCL) has been proposed and demonstrated [3-4]. By using a specially designed halfwave coupler between two Fabry-Perot lasers, a widely-tunable single-mode laser with high side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is achieved without requiring complex gratings. Discrete wavelength tuning up to 50 channels at 100 GHz spacing has been demonstrated experimentally with a simple tuning algorithm [5]. Single-electrode controlled fast wavelength tuning in the order of ~10ns has also been achieved by using a quantum well intermixed tuning section [6].

Abstract:Directly modulated tunable lasers are highly desirable for constructing dense-wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) access networks, owing to their advantages of low cost, compact size and low power consumption. However, the transmission distance for 10 Gbps is usually limited to about 10 km in the telecom C-band in standard single-mode fiber (SMF) due to wavelength chirp. Here we propose and demonstrate a simple technique for extending the transmission distance by detuning the wavelength of a tunable V-cavity laser with respect to DWDM multiplexers. Experiment results show that 10 Gbps signal can be transmitted error-free (BER<10(-12)) over 20 km SMF with a wavelength-detuning with respect to a Gaussian-type arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) without dispersion compensation. The power penalty is only 1 dB compared to the back-to-back transmission.
Transparent Two-Fiber Optical Channel Shared Protection Ring

Abstract:A two-fiber optical channel shared protection ring including node architecture, signaling protocol, control hardware, and software is designed and implemented experimentally. For a ring with four nodes and two wavelengths, a total protection switching time of 6.8 ms is demonstrated along with a revert-to-working switching time of 1.6 ms. Experimental results show that the switching time scales linearly with number of nodes and number of wavelengths. The system can protect a ring with 16 nodes, 1200 km circumference, and 40 wavelengths in less than 50 ms.

Abstract:The principle, design and experimental results of widely tunable V-cavity lasers are reviewed. By using a novel half-wave coupler, single-mode lasing with high side-mode-suppression-ratio is achieved. Single-electrode controlled wide-band wavelength tuning is realized by employing the Vernier mechanism. The tuning range can be further extended beyond the free spectral range limit by using the effect of temperature induced gain spectrum shift. The full-band tuning of 50 channels with 100 GHz spacing is demonstrated at 1550 nm range. Similarly, 41-channel tuning with 150 GHz spacing is achieved at 870 nm. The advantages of compactness, fabrication simplicity, and easy wavelength control offer great potential for the tunable laser to be used in low-cost access and data center networks.

Abstract:As the demand for network bandwidth is growing explosively, the deployment of the wavelength division multiplexing technology is extending from the backbone network to the metropolitan area network and the access networks. Low-cost tunable semiconductor lasers, which are the core components of wavelength division networks, are attracting increasing attention. This paper reviews the development of semiconductor tunable lasers, describes the working principles and performance of various tunable lasers, and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of typical commercial tunable optical modules. The research and industrial application progress of low-cost tunable V-cavity lasers are mainly introduced.

Abstract:Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical ring network is becoming more and more attractive due to its high capacity and survivability against fiber breaks. At the same time wavelength routing simplifies the node structure by using optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) and optical cross-connect (OXC) in the network. In the two-fiber unidirectional optical path-protection switching ring (TUPSR) network, two separate OADM equipments are required to add/drop channels from the two fiber-rings simultaneously. Due to this high price, the cost benefit introduced by the WDM systems is reduced. In this paper, a novel OADM structure is proposed and demonstrated for two-fiber unidirectional optical path protection switching ring network. The OADM is designed with only one arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer in a loop-back configuration. Being used in bidirectional mode, the proposed OADM can add and drop any channel to and from both fiber-rings of the TUPSR simultaneously with only one module. As a result it is cost effective. Experimental results show that the degradation observed in the receiver sensitivity is very limit when the proposed OADM module is used in the two-fiber unidirectional optical protection switching ring network to add/drop multiple channels. The restoration time is less than 7 ms, which satisfies the requirement of ITU-T recommendations. Performance of the TUPSR against the two-fiber unidirectional optical line protection switching ring (TULSR) is also analyzed. It can be derived that the TUPSR has better performance compared to the TULSR not only on the transparent-ring circumference but also on the reliability and the simplicity of control.

Abstract:A wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM)-visible laser light communication (VLLC) and white-lighting ring network with a 150-Gbits accumulative transmission rate at central station (CS), a 50-Gbits transmission rate at optical node, and a 604-lux white-lighting at CS is successfully demonstrated. Red, green, and blue laser diodes employing two-stage injection locking and optoelectronic feedback techniques are utilized to afford the dual functions of high-speed VLLC links and white-light illumination at readingwriting-level. By deploying optical add-drop multiplexing scheme, this newly-built WDM-VLLC and white-lighting ring network is promising since it allows a point-to-multipoint link and a two-way operation in free-space transmission. Impressively low bit error rate of 109, clear PAM4 eye diagrams, and qualified white-lighting for reading and writing are achieved through 7.5 m9 m10.5 m12 m VLLC link with 5 m plastic optical fiber transmission. Such constructed WDM-VLLC and white-lighting ring network shows a potential one for the evolution of high-speed VLLC with white-lighting for readingwriting.

Abstract:The ongoing growth of data traffic from existing and new latency-sensitive applications poses a challenge to the data center network. Wavelength-routed optical circuit switching promises high bandwidth, low power and latency networking for data centers, but requires a wideband wavelength tunable source capable of nanosecond-scale hitless wavelength switching at every node. A tunable source based on DFB laser arrays is a potential candidate due to the high-speed dynamic property and high single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) stability of the DFB laser. However, the large-scale integration of the DFB laser and the high precision control of the lasing wavelength are still problems. In this work, we proposed and fabricated a monolithic integrated 16-channel DFB laser array with high SLM stability and 100-GHz channel spacing by using the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique. The maximum output power of each channel was above 6 mW. Based on the custom-designed fast switching drive board with a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), the switch-ON and OFF time between any pair of channel combinations were measured at less than 10 ns. Dynamic switching wavelengths remained stable and resided within the receiver bandwidth. Wavelength switching experiments for modulated light signals were done by driving the external modulator, achieving bit error performance at 1 x 10(-9) for 10 Gb/s NRZ data.

Abstract:A tunable and switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a new type tunable comb filter is proposed and demonstrated. By adjusting the polarization controllers, dual-function operation of the channel spacing tunability and the wavelength switching (interleaving) can be readily achieved. Up to 29 stable lasing lines with 0.4 nm spacing and 14 lasing wavelengths with 0.8 nm spacing in 3 dB bandwidth were obtained at room temperature. In addition, the lasing output, including the number of the lasing lines, the lasing evenness and the lasing locations, can also be flexibly adjusted through the wavelength-dependent polarization rotation mechanism.

Abstract:A hybrid integrated tunable narrow-linewidth laser is demonstrated in this paper. The hybrid laser comprises a commercial DFB laser butt-coupled to an external cavity with a micro-ring resonator. A transfer matrix model has been presented and the wavelength performance of the laser has been analyzed. In the experiment, the hybrid laser Lorentzian linewidth is ~5KHz and the tuning range is ~2.75 nanometer.

Abstract:Spectrum-narrowed and -locked broad-area diode lasers operating at 780 nm are essential for rubidium laser development. With the help of Littrow-type transmission gratings, we demonstrated a simple scheme with a narrow linewidth and the diode laser's center wavelength locked without thermal drift, in contrast to volume Bragg gratings. By carefully collimating the diode laser beam, we realized a linewidth narrower than 0.17 nm and a side-mode suppression ratio over 20 dB. Furthermore, broad-spectrum tuning at 9 nm was demonstrated by grating angle tuning. This method could easily be adapted to other wavelength diode lasers.

Abstract:The tunable distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor lasers with cascaded configuration were designed and fabricated using equivalent phase shift (EPS) technique. 32-wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) channels with 50-GHz and 100-GHz wavelength spacing were experimentally demonstrated. In such a tunable laser, single mode operation can be ensured by introducing EPS and the wavelength tuning can be realized by cascaded sections with specific sampling periods combining with chip heating. The proposed approach has some advantages such as good single mode property, low fabrication cost and feasibility of monolithic integration. The experimental results show that the tuning range can be nearly up to 25nm and the side mode suppression ratios (SMSRs) of most channels are above 40dB. The proposed laser should be promising for cost-effective applications in WDM systems.

Abstract:The design of the intelligent all-optical protection scheme based on the physical layer of the mesh optical network is introduced.This scheme obeys the principle of 1+1 protection method which is based on the "dual fed selective receiving" mode.The scheme consists of hardware design and software design.A new type of intelligent real-time monitoring and protecting device and an algorithm of automatic establishment of the protecting light path are designed.The algorithm runs within the device and enables the device to establish a protecting light path in the protection fiber network for each corresponding working light path in advance.The real-time optical power of the working light paths is monitored by the device.Once the fault of the working light path occurs,the device will switch to the corresponding protecting light path immediately.The algorithm is assumed to be implemented in a 12-node mesh optical network,and the simulation result is given.By using the proposed protection scheme,the transparent uninterrupted communication of mesh optical network can be achievable in the way of the all-optical protection.

Abstract:A 10 Gbit/s 16-km-long reconfigurable wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is presented empowered by a low-cost multi-channel directly modulated laser (DML) module. Compared with the case using discrete devices in conventional scheme, the proposed DML module provides a cost-effective solution with reduced complexity. The clear eye diagram and the bit error rate ( BER ) of less than 2×10 -7 with a sensitivity of −7 dBm are obtained. Due to the special packaging design, the crosstalk between channels under condition of simultaneous operation can be negligible.
Physical-layer key distribution using synchronous complex dynamics of DBR semiconductor lasers

Abstract:Common-signal-induced synchronization of semiconductor lasers with optical feedback inspired a promising physical key distribution with information-theoretic security and potential in high rate. A significant challenge is the requirement to shorten the synchronization recovery time for increasing key rate without sacrificing operation parameter space for security. Here, open-loop synchronization of wavelength-tunable multi-section distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers is proposed as a solution for physical-layer key distribution. Experiments show that the synchronization is sensitive to two operation parameters, i.e., currents of grating section and phase section. Furthermore, fast wavelength-shift keying synchronization can be achieved by direct modulation on one of the two currents. The synchronization recovery time is shortened by one order of magnitude compared to close-loop synchronization. An experimental implementation is demonstrated with a final key rate of 5.98 Mbit/s over 160 km optical fiber distance. It is thus believed that fast-tunable multi-section semiconductor lasers opens a new avenue of high-rate physical-layer key distribution using laser synchronization.

Abstract:We propose a design on integrated optical devices on-chip with an extra width degree of freedom by using a photonic crystal waveguide with Dirac points between two photonic crystals with opposite valley Chern numbers. With such an extra waveguide, we demonstrate numerically that the topologically protected photonic waveguide retains properties of valley-locking and immunity to defects. Due to the design flexibility of the width-tunable topologically protected photonic waveguide, many unique on-chip integrated devices have been proposed, such as energy concentrators with a concentration efficiency improvement of more than one order of magnitude, and a topological photonic power splitter with an arbitrary power splitting ratio. The topologically protected photonic waveguide with the width degree of freedom could be beneficial for scaling up photonic devices, and provides a flexible platform to implement integrated photonic networks on-chip.
